You don't know what a Panzer 4, is or are you just that much of a racist? Cause that's how that joke comes off.
Oh wait. You might have been making fun of that time, midwinter minis. were **** weak **** douche weasels about Flames of War Or was it Bolt Action it doesn't really matter.
Really?…that’s a pretty low bar for that kind of allegation…
@@redcoat259 Maybe. but I am in the profession of analytics, with this kind of thing You should be looking at what's coming out of schools and the media and especially every countries government in the Western world. Revisionism to turn the Da-Nazis in to just an excuse to racially persecute. and it's like you're English so you're more guilty of the most absurd things we've made up about the Nazis than the Nazis were. It's literally a thing being taught in education.
I'm just playing a little tanks board game with my cuddly frog, dude. Wind your neck in.
Feck me that leap could net you a gold in the olympics. Analyse yourself first.
2 fish in a tank. One turns to the other and says... "Do you know how to drive this thing..?"
This makes me smile
I cried laughing seeing Tony cop the box to the head, it was so unexpected. Fantastic
As a reformed board game addict, it's a board game. I feel deeply in my bones this is a boardgame. They should just box it all in one huge box and put it next to Catan.
I think i'm gonna agree!
Seconded, this is exactly the kind of game that should be offered at a board game cafe. It's beer and pretzels through and through.
It has the same DNA as X-Wing and Wings of War. Boardgames without an actual board.
@@hooliganblack832 I knew it reminded me of something with the giant arrows! X-wing! I helped my friend put together all his models and the stupid diels and then he didn't even want to play , ha good times.
I think so as well. And probably a very good “wargameish” intro for folks who might otherwise not try one!
Been playing World of Tanks for years and never knew this existed. They've managed to apply a physical, paid layer over a freemium videogame. It's like magic.
WoT didn't make the game. They just bought a pre-existing game and jizzed their logo all over it.

Gale Force 9 is owned by Battlefront Miniatures a New Zealand company who make a 15mm World War II miniatures game called Flames of War. The World of tanks minis are battlefront's kits but pre built and primed a single color as a quick introduction to minis gaming.
They had an old skirmish game called tanks which was discontinued to make world of tanks. I consider it a welcome addition as it gives my flames of war minis some more functionality.
That will be why the rules look familiar lol
These minis are the same as flames of war, but they are perfectly pre-assembled and have an amazing primer paint job on them. They also sell for a few dollars less than FOW minis on clearance since WOT basically flopped. They are the best quality 15mm tank models on the market.
Does anyone use the official die cast models, made by Corgi?
@@MrPolicekarim no because they are the wrong scale.
Whoa, you got the garage too!?? Very stylish. This game is for cool dudes.
Hey BB you can come around and hang with me and Hector any time you want. Plenty of room in the garage for one more…
Wait…
£8.80 for a Grot Tank isn't bad considering GW want £85 for 4.
Cunning, Yet Brutal.
I picked up WoT back in 2021 and painted up the German and US forces first. I’ve collected everything through Wave 12 and some doubles. I play historical forces with as many as 3 players a side. It’s quick fun and once folks get the hang of it, I let them have a go a creating their own lists. Who is it for? Light historical wargames, a gateway for young players and fit the ‘we don’t have all night’ crowd. Having played XWing, this is similar, if not more simplified.
I would also recommend covering Gaslands. Rulebook and Matchbox cars are all you need to start. Special dice, acrylic templates and markers can come later. Most folks have fun customizing their cars with bitz box items and a simple paint job.
Tanks for this.
Good pun. Rolling out with laughter on that one. Shaft.
😂
This looks like an unwanted child between Bolt Action and X-Wing.
Edit:
Also I think it's worth mentioning that in World of Tanks the two teams fighting in any given battle is made up of any nationalities. The matchmaker balances teams around tank types (and more) but not nationality.
I think that's why the miniature game isn't trying to be historical per se.
Came here to say this. WoT is an arcade game not a simulation. It has nearly dozen a countries (UK, USA, Italy, German, Sweden, France, Poland, Czech, USSR, China and Japan) in the tech tree, but most of the tanks are paper tanks - only existed as blueprints if not pure fabrications. All battles have mix of all nations fighting on either team.
Yeah, it reminded me of X-wing on many aspects
I came here to say this as well, but also to add that this game has the problem that Tanks! and Tanks! The Modern Age has in that we are limited to what Battlefront will produce in plastic.
For example, in Tanks! TMA, only the US had an AA Tank because the M113 could be built as the Standard Metal Box, M901 ITV (TOW ATGM), and M163 VADS. West Germans didn't get the Gepard, and Soviets didn't get the Gaskin/Gopher or even the Shilka. Only the French had Artillery, because the AMX-30 kit can build the AMX AuF1 as well. You had to resort to fand made cards.
By the time plastic M109 and BDRM came out, the game was discontinued. So even though we are getting T-54, T29, IS-3 etc for World of Tanks (and Storm of Steel, and Late War Leviathans), the chances of ever seeing a French, Japanese, Chinese, Polish, Italian, etc. all those other tech trees is slim to none.
@Agent00abe they used to have a rule on platoons/teams only being of one nationality but they dropped it. I think it was because its not a serious historical game anyways and mixing and matching is more fun
I mean, both Axis and Allies would repaint and use captured tanks at times, because moving small-arms proof metal box (METUHL BAWKSES!) with bigger guns on top are super useful. So while you might not be able to find a report of an engagement with the precise mixture of tanks in the box, it is plausible.
GF9 also did "Tanks" which was basically the predecessor to the WoT game. Same rules, same minis, same tokens XD (different cards though)
I was wonderin' if that game was a precursor to this as it seemed super familiar.
Yep. And TANKS was a spinoff from Flames of War. They're literally the same models you buy in a box for FoW, just pre-assembled and primed.
Seems like there has been a lot of tank interest lately (TONKS, Tanks for the Apocalypse...)
I absolutely loved(and still do) TANKS!… personally, getting to build them was added value for me that WoT doesn’t have for me… and they were only $10 CDN per tank… another win for me.
@@nicdieterle8950it was a really good way to fill out lists with the (then) new plastic kits. Especially helicopters for Team Yankee. At one point it was cheaper to buy the helicopters as multiple singles than it was to buy the actual box set, so they had to shut it down!
I get your thinking, and it is in an unusual place, but it is a great little beer & pretzels game for people who play historical games. It doesn't have the depth of a lot of other games, but you don't always want that. If you just want to push around some tanks and roll some dice, this is a great package for that experience.
Agree
The people who buy anything for this game at my store are buying them to add more models for an existing Flames of War force. Most of their tank platoon boxes are in 5s and if you're doing a company of them you need 1 or 2 for command tanks.
Your channel randomly appeared on my feed. I love your editing style and format. Subbed!
Looks like they took some nice mechanics from X-Wing especially the upgrades, critical hits, and initiative systems for moving and shooting. Like X-Wing, you seem to benefit from having two core sets.
Came for this
You know about Flames of War right? The Battlefront WW2 game using the same scale miniatures. This game was a spinoff from that where it became a tank skirmish game. So anyone playing historical or historical adjacent games would be into this because, as you noted, it is light and quick with as much data as you please.
I do! I mention it in the video. 🐸😊
@@MSPaints I am obviously going deaf.
It's not World of Tanks unless you have an anime waifu decal on the tank, and a twelve year old is screeching at you on voice chat.
9:45: Bruh... Russians began WWII on the same side as Germany, with the two invading Poland in concert (see Ribbentropp-Molotov Pact). They had a falling out after Stalin wanted too many concessions in return for formally joining the Axis, and that led to the Reich attacking USSR in 1941 in Operation Barbarossa in 1941.
The anachronism is moreso in the German / Russian team fighting the British / American team than with the presence of Russians on the same side as Germans.
Yeah, it's only weird that all 4 are in the same location in these splits. To many people forget Russia was completely on board with Germany in the beginning
I made all the terrain for this for a mate. Turned out super nice. Doing a lake, upgrading some rubber roads and making some more forests. Its fun ish... If you want I'll send you some images on FB.
I've only played WoT once. Before I played, my buddy described the game as Mario Cart with tanks. It was a fun and quick game.
Guess amma go watch me some Carnosaur now.
Funny how this is a re-skin of "Tanks!" which was a skirmish version of "Flames of War". The original starter box was 2 Panthers vs. 3 Shermans or something. They weren't assembled and had a lot of options for costumisation which allowed for different version. I liked that a lot. So, I guess they hoped the WoT license would make it sell better. It looks prettier but now it's even less complex and more expensive.
We have that Warhammer board game here, never played. As a family we all enjoyed Heroquest so one year I got the Warhammer one for my husband for a Father’s Day present. The assembly and painting was just too much of a barrier for him.
Now that I paint, the minis are now assembled, primed and grey & white airbrushed. One day I may even get some colour on them. They’re just so annoyingly fragile!
Absolutely. The bar of entry on some mini board games is huuuuuge!
Great vid again Dave and loving that you dare to review games others wont. Keep it up.
Sure do! I have to hide what it is! But i do do it! haha
"I saw, I liked, I commented." - Julius Caesar, probably...
Edit: Honestly, this sounds like what I'd buy to play with my old man. Quick pick up time, minimal rules, and a subject he has more than a passing interest in. I've picked a few bolt action tanks up for him, but don't really see us playing a game soon. Might swing by the FLGS I saw this at last visit and spend an evening on it.
I always figured that World of Tanks and Tanks! before it was just a gateway drug for Flames of War? (since the models are both the same from Battlefront but prebuilt & primed)
Well, Germans and Soviets did start the war pretty much allied (google Molotov-Ribbentrop Pact), but I agree that you wouldn't see them acting together on the battlefield. (Maybe with an exception of late September 39 when one could imagine them hunting down together some remnants of Polish military.)
Though the Germans did use captured Soviet tanks, including T-34 and KV. Indeed, they also used some captured American and British ones too (well... I've seen photos of a German M3, but I forget if it was a Lee or Grant variant).

Wow, just found this channel and I think I am gonna love it so much. Honestly, seeing a video of this quality makes me rethink wanting to make my own videos. Like I love so many elements I'm seeing here, glad I found the channel.
The comment "there is something intangibly on the nose about how this is laid out, can't quite put my nose on it" was so British. I love it
Cheers
I always appreciate how your videos look and are edited. The content is real good too.
I was just getting into the Tanks miniatures game as the line was discontinued and replaced with this title. It was very disappointing as the new systems didn't support my collection and the mechanics changed just enough to remove the enjoyment I was getting
Sounds like fun! Kind of like Axis and Allies Minis meets X-Wing.
I feel a vague nostalgic connection to this game as it’s the same models as Flames of War that I played all through school. I love you covering these short lived one off games ❤
That Max Payne soundtrack....sublime.
I've always found the idea of bringing video gamers into the realm of table top games to be a difficult ones. There isn't a lot of crossover especially when the games play very differently. Also, in the case of World of Tanks if you've already shelled out (pun intended) your hard earned on electronic upgrades why would you spend more money on a different system?
I'd be interested in seeing the sales figures for Fallout and Elder Scrolls. On paper i feel like those are destined to do better. But in reality i dunno!
@@MSPaints they probably do. Rpg fans are often not shy of the tabletop stuff. MTG, DnD and whatnot. WoT is more like a hardcore online shooter. But I agree, getting some sales numbers would be interesting
Just wanted to say that I appreciate, and really enjoy your use of Letters and Life is Beautiful as background music. Perfect choices.
You got a sub the moment that puppet got hit with that box. Good shit
Gave me flash backs to playing Tank Command from IDEAL about 40 years ago, think old school battleships.
Man I've been looking for a channel like this for ages, keep up the great work. I could see this game being a blast
You may have just inspired me to get into miniatures. I simply don't have the space yet. I very much admire your workshop, sir. Just happened upon your channel a moment ago. Cheers. 🍵
Looks like a nice beer and oretzels tank battle game. A bit more interested now.
Seems like it is for those that just want to battle with tanks, don't care about historical reenactment, and just want to make things go boom.
I got this when it came out I really enjoy it as it's quick for those times you really want to play a war game but don't have time for other games. I've seen other versions of the box that come with different tanks which were tanks you can get separately anyway but it's interesting that there's to boxes.
My gaming club uses it at our conventions to bring children from 8 up to early teens into gaming. We have a few folks almost always running a couple of games in two different 4 hour blocks during the convention. That is what it really who this game is for is to introduce folks to some simple and easy rules, as well as concepts typical to wargaming. We have priced it out as well, to get in after the starter set, isn't that hard to pick up a few more tanks for less than US$20 or save up and get a platoon blister pack. That the models are already together and painted means that a 10yr old (or a 40 yr old who has young kids in the house) who is wanting to dabble in the hobby can easily get into it without the investment of painting and assembling minis.
We went from Renaissance straight to the Kitch era in boardgames.
Thanks for the video. I was curious about this game. I have seen it being sold at Historical Minatare Conventions.
After seeing your demonstrations of the game, I think this game is for the serious Minatare games who wants to get their friends to play Historical Games. You take World of Tanks game to a Game Night and introduce people to Historical Miniatures. After you get them hooked, you break out Bolt Action.
How the frick can you not recognize the Panzer IV ausf. H? Not only is it a masterpiece of german engineering and the workhorse of the german military during WW2 but it is also the tank of choice for the protagonists of Girls und Panzer, the popular anime about Japanese Highschool Girls doing recreational Tank battles with real tanks!
I would beg to differ on your first point, but Germans had 1, and still have an overwhelming problem with over engineering, which made the tank more of a liability in action. Then it should have been.
Yessir
It was such a workhorse that they lost the war 💀
13:51 I was chilling watching this video, headphones on the ears, while painting a few minis and BOOOOOM
you're lucky I was drybrushing
Now, there's a Ribbentrop-Molotov pairing your dad would approve there, Dave.
I haven't watched the video in its entirety but a thought did come to mind when you said the called the terrain something like "augmentation" / 2d flat terrain - combined with the fact that the game is based on a video game/mobile game: They could have potentially gone for some kind of weird mobile mixture with an app that actually if you point the phone camera at the battlefield, using optical recognition software it recognises the flat terrain (and maybe the tanks as well and damage tokens) and renders a perspective correct 3d visual of what the tabletop displays (with animations)...which tech-able players could if they want screen-cast to their large screen tv.
This game and tanks! are pretty much X-Wing but on a smaller board and with tanks. It wasnt a bad idea, and it seems fine to pick up and keep on the shelf for when dad comes over
I grabbed this game when it first came out and it's a good game, though I think it works well as a gateway for those who don't normally play historical games but want to try something out that's vaguely historical. The other is to introduce those who've never played a miniature wargame into the hobby, because it has a very minimal miniature count, it's not complicated and there's plenty of expansions in the form of new tanks available to purchase. I'm a big historical wargamer and wouldn't normally grab this but we initially reviewed it for Irregular Magazine and I actually enjoyed playing it.
They've now produced a bigger tank game which doesn't have the World of Tanks IP, the starter set is two tank armies. I'll probably pick that up at some point.
Quite awhile ago there was a company called spartan games that produced a Halo ttrpg with minis of both human and alien ships. The game was only around for a short time before the company shut down.
That's just Flames of War's TANKS! Repackaged.
I picked up a copy of this on a recent visit to the Tank Museum Bovington. You've inspired me to at least open it and take a look inside 😂
This looks neat - those tanks would also be good material to play Tonks with. And hell yeah Frostgrave, I'll be looking forward to that!
Oh man, the moment Tony got hit by the box, I laughed so hard that I almost fell out of my chair.
Hey man. Played World of tanks for several years. Got into scalemodeling and miniturepainting. Played some fallout wasteland warfare. No warhammer. This game looks fun and easy without the hassle of buying too much into a big tabletop IP. I guess the game is for someone with an interest in scalemodeling that would like to play some quick games once in a while. Thanks for the video. Good stuff.
Awesome video, looking forward to more like this :)
More comin'!
To be fair, there is the Molotov-Ribbentrop Pact! Though without Polish tanks in the starting set it doesn't make much sense.
"Who is this actually for" is a question i ask quite often in geek and geek adjacent culture. I saw an action figure for £250 the other day. Not a classic, out of print, collectors piece, but an actual new product. Who has this kind of money?
Geeks apparently. If it's old and gains value, sure, i might bite. But not a new thing, jaaaaaysus
holy moly this production quality is top notch
Please do a Dark World video! That game (the village one more exactly) was a random pick from my uncle when he was a child on a trip with my grandparents and then with it he introduced me to board games and fantasy rpg stuff!
It's on the list to do! Found it at a convention for £10. Was over the moon!
Bought on the back of this so cheers. Will be great for playing with my mate who isnt into big rulesets but loves his ww2 stuff
I love that BFG box in the background. Epic boxart, great game ... just way too much for my poketmoney at the time of release ❤❤❤
This starter is essentially a repaint of the original X-Wing/Star Trek Attack Wing/ Wings of War (any Flight Path?) starter box, it seems. Having played a majority of X-Wing first edition and a little Star Trek Attack Wing that is exactly what this box set is.
I haven't played the videogame, I'm not interested in tanks. But this looks like a fun game, I wouldn't mind playing it with someone who already owns it. I like the LoS rule, it's elegant, if a little slow.
I run the previous version Tanks at many a demo event for our game. It's great for being very easy to learn and being appealing from a WW2 viewpoint. I don't really do much else with it; pre-planned movement is done better in X-Wing or more fun in Gaslands, and there are two many abstractions in movements to keep serious gamers happy.
This is a great for father and a young son who love tanks. Something that's not bogged down in rules and quick enough to play another without being overwhelming. I will being looking at thinking this one again. I was able to demo this at my LGS and I GF9 being a huge fan of Star Trek Ascendancy and Flames of Wars. But getting into something simplistic for my 10 year old so he doesn't feel left out is going to be the best thing for him and our family.
I play WoT the video game, and actually also love the miniatures game, some of the guys I chat to online during the week while playing the video game, like to meet up face to face on the odd weekend for some beers and to play the miniatures game, its a different experience, and nice to have something physical to play, and we have even started recreating in game camo patterns, and in game maps like Himmelsdorf, with scenery.
It used to be called just Tanks years ago and was great fun. At the club I used to frequent it was a nice pallet cleanser after a 40k or kings of war game as it didn't take much thought and was easy to play. It is similar to x-wing the miniatures game but with tanks. I loved it, but sadly my cards and tokens got wiped out in flood damage and I've not got around to replacing them. Still got the tanks though
Such a fun video! You got me really interested in this game. I got many casual wargames adjacant friends I play board games and card games with, This seems like a great game to bust out on game night and have a couple of rounds.
Even if the World of Tanks as a tabletop game is not so interesting for me, the music what starts to play around 12:24 is a huge nostalgia boost.
Great production as always and that quick paint job was a big upgrade on the "prepainted" tanks.
I like the sound of the rules for this one, but imagine playing a tank game and it's not Tonks by Bill Making Stuff.
I could go for a Corman/Troma based TTG if Im honest.

OMFG I can’t wait until you cover Frostgrave.
I'd love to see a World of Tanks Bolo edition, even at 1/100 scale that would be insane! Any Keith Laumer fans out there?
As someone who played the game on PC for years when it first released, this WAS a game for the players. In the early days, most of the players were... the kind of people who would mostly likely be drawn to a WWII tank game. And the game fit the bill... for the most part. In recent years they have gone completely off the rails with "tanks" they decide to add to the game, hyper-focused on the trend of every game being "e-sports ready" and so on. This drove most of the target audience for this tabletop game away long ago. Case in point, this is the first time I have ever heard of it.
As far as gameplay goes, It's pretty much spot on for the videogame. Every nation can play on the same team, shooting and damaging an enemy has the same RNG feel that is present (frustratingly so) in the videogame, and the LoS mechanic seems more thought out than the spotting mechanics in the videogame.
Jenny Nicholson did a (very confused) review of the Forces of Destiny dolls. They were Star Wars Barbie dolls. Why? She had a brillian insight - the dolls were for Star Wars Uncles to buy their niece who already liked dolls and could now play Star Wars with her dolls as well. So. So ... is this for WarHammer Uncle or World of Tanks Uncle?
The 'who is it for?' question has been bugging me too, so thank you for working through it. It looks good for my historical wargaming friends who aren't into Star Wars
I don't have World of Tanks, but I knew it existed. It seems that GF9 replaced two of their own games - Tanks! and Tanks: The Modern Age - with it when they got the World of Tanks license. Mechanically your overview suggests it is very similar to those games. I picked up Tanks: The Modern Age a few years ago, it was set in an alternate history Cold War gone hot 1980s. I was more interested in a post-war game than a WWII game though the appeal of pitting NATO and Soviet tanks against each other on the tabletop suddenly became much less appealing 2 years ago...
I might be telling you information you already know, but the WW3 minis are from Team Yankee, and there's plenty of non-Soviet armies to fight against! (Other Warsaw Pact, Iran, Iraq, Cuba...)
@@BigTiBu I did know that Tanks: The Modern Age was a skirmish spin-off of Team Yankee - the game's introductory missions are based off events in that novel, IIRC. However while there may be more factions in Team Yankee, Tanks: The Modern Age only had 6 factions, 5 NATO (UK, USA, France and West Germany) and the Warsaw Pact.
Tanks is a great game, we used to have a League in my store re-playing the Normandy invasion. It was a big draw since it's a WW2 "lite" game using basically the X-Wing mechanics. Simple, easy to understand yet really fun once you start rolling dice. It helped that we were playing around the time Fury had come out so a lot of us were pumped to play a Tank game.
Always diggin yer stuff
Quality stuff!
I loved wot online but also play xwing minitures and this is an (almost) excat copy of the original star wars xwing v1. Easy to learn and very fun to play
Been playing this on and off for over a year now at my local club. Most people who have played it enjoyed it.
I’m glad to hear that, it’s a neat little game.
I played the original Tanks! game. IMO, it's pretty cool and I tackled it like a Girls Und Panzer-esque board game as, for those that haven't seen the show, it involves teams of tanks battling over smaller objectives and such that fit in the scale of this game. Pretty quick and simple tank-focused gameplay
I mean, russians and Germans teamed up fine enough from the mid 1930s until 1941. The russians supplied them with raw materials to build the tanks and space to practice tank maneuvers in russia, and they looked friendly enough at the joint parade they help once they both invaded Poland.
I think this game existed before this set in almost an identical format simply called "tanks" and has been rebranded. It as intended to be an "in" for Flames of war (Battlefront minis) I think, who made the minis.
I've played the predecessor, Tanks, recently. It was a little too simple for my tastes (I prefer What a Tanker), but I think it's a nice intro game for some people wanting to play a game based on 'history'.
GF9 had(have?) a game called Tanks! Which came before, looks like this is a simplified version of that.
Started to all make sense now!
I like the classic Max Payne music (the same track that plays in the Inner Circle building)
By Crom I loved that rulebook.
Also good to see a new "Gateway Games" vid
This looks cool - based on your description, it is more or less exactly FFG's X-Wing miniatures game (the movement, the initiative mechanic, the dice mechanic, the critical deck, etc), so I guess it's for people who played X-Wing and thought "man, I wish these TIE fighters had tracks". By which I mean: I like X-Wing, and tanks are undeniably cool, so I'd quite like to play this.
Tony was on fire this video, I actually laughed out loud at the first bit 😂 you rock dude.
While I agree the box alliances are a little strange, the Soviet Union officially maintained neutrality during WW2 but cooperated with and assisted Germany. After Nazi Germany attacked the USSR on June 22, 1941, the country changed alliances. But in short, early WW2 Soviet forces invaded countries in conjunction with Germany, even if they didn't fight alongside of them!
I have shown this game off to my local games club. It was received well and I believe it was the 'beer and pretzel' appeals the most. The inner child in most wargamers just likes blowing tanks up!
aye aye, yeah. It's definitely instant and breezy fun!
I too like dice with pictures on.
Interesting, I'm sure this started as a pc or android game , people who like risk board game , there's more shops like geek retreat and other gaming cafes that are popping up on the high street .
