Indifference to things we can't control is definitely an aspect of stoicism, but stoicism does demand that we are extremely attentive to our actions in the world and their effects. For example, we should be unaffected by a toxic person who tries to bring us down, but should be very attentive to our own actions in order to avoid being that person.

"The only rules that really matter are these: what a man can do and what a man can't do. For instance, you can accept that your father was a pirate and a good man or you can't. But pirate is in your blood, boy, so you'll have to square with that some day. And me, for example, I can let you drown, but I can't bring this ship into Tortuga all by me onesies, savvy? So, can you sail under the command of a pirate, or can you not?"

4:30 Little note: "Memento mori" doesn't only mean "Remember that you will die"; it can also be read as "Remember that you are just a mortal man, doomed to die".
That's why when he was cheered by the crowds Marcus Aurelius paid a poor to stay be his side and whisper in his ear "Memento mori": in that instance it wasn't just "You will eventually die", it was more "Don't let yourself be fooled by the cheers: you are not a god but merely a mortal man".

My mom was just sent to a nursing home. (I am fourteen) I was well aware we would never be able to see her again, but I did not cry. A nurse confronted me asking how I stayed emotionally calm, to which I responded "There isn't anything I can do against her dimentia. It's been going downhill for my entire life, now I must find a way to live on my own." I care about my mother greatly, but I figured out after countless breakups, deaths, suicides, neglect, my father leaving, etc. that it does not help to stay distraught, but to move forward.

Most people expect you to cry. You can be shredded apart inside and be unable to cry. Tears have to come naturally. You have to deal with things in your own way.

Philosophy was not made to show how well read you are, it was made for everyone to have critical thinking and be able to consider different perspectives and determine which one made more sense. It's awful nowadays it is considered a useless knowledge to have and can't even see inconsistencies in arguments. A lot of people just follows whatever latest trend comes along and adhere to whatever perspective a celebrity has.

If you're sick, there are only two things to worry about: either you'll get better, or you'll die. If you get better, there's nothing to worry about. Hrmm, I rather liked the video but the title... Stoicism isn't indifference, it's acceptance which is wholly different. It's not not caring, it's understanding that your emotional response to a situation (of which caring may be the response) will not change the situation if it is out of your control. And if you are in control your initial emotional response is likely to be worse than a reasoned one.

Great comment. Only I wouldn't use the word control, as you have. It isn't even being in control of your emotional response, in the sense of repressing emotions. It's having the discipline to not let the emotional response that is there to dominate your thoughts and actions. This might seem like a semantic difference, but I believe self-control is an attempt at a shortcut to self-discipline. It's the difference between showing restraint and being repressed.

U know life is...sth to not take too seriously but meaningfully if that makes sense. If we keep on worrying too much we’re taking it too seriously. If we say- I have a goal in this life, I’m a traveler of time, so let’s not worry and give back to this world- you’ll feel a bit free. Your worries, your situation...everything, is not yours. You are just part of it right now. But nothing is yours. You are energy in this existence. Don’t take it too seriously. Detach. See the world from afar. You’ll realize that you are so small and much more than just a human being.

A friend of mine started going to a Cognitive Behavioral Therapist and found it's really helped him with his emotional issues and personal relationships. Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (or CBT) is most basically a theory which states that emotional reactions are caused by internal dialogue. This ties back into Einzelganger's video on how Stoicism deals with insults: if somebody insults me and I get angry with them for it, then the fault for anger lies within myself and I need to search myself to see what was wrong in me that caused me to get upset.
My friend's therapist made my friend spend several weeks journaling his thoughts that he had between an event and his emotional reaction. My friend was astonished that he actually has a surprisingly long train of thoughts between events and his emotional reaction to them. His greater ability to accept things he can't control and the greater understanding of himself he now has have improved his life more than he could have ever dreamed

You might have done something wrong, not doing something, not done something or didnt go about it the right way. Is it within stoicism to be let down with your failure, and persuing a pleasure? Or should you just take it as something not in your control? Love to know what you think.

I think a better word to use than indifference is equanimity. To me indifference implies some level of non caring attitude, while equanimity still allows one to care about better and worse but approaches the world from a less self centered and broader perspective.

That's one fantastic word you shared there. As I am feeling inspired by Seneca who would always end a letter with a gift, I shall in turn leave you with a gift.
Seneca was a firm believer in not reading a lot of different books, but instead delving deep into what few you do read. I'm still struggling to understand what he meant, and as such I've spent months slowly reading his book, but I digress. I find this part from Volume 1 especially intriguing. He writes to a friend:
"And the same thing must hold true of men who seek intimate acquaintance with no single author, but visit them all in a hasty and hurried manner.
Food does no good and is not assimilated into the body if it leaves the stomach as soon as it is eaten; nothing hinders a cure so much as frequent change of medicine; no wound will heal when one salve is tried after another; a plant which is often moved can never grow strong. There is nothing so efficacious that it can be helpful while it is being shifted about. And in reading of many books is distraction."

    • @hplccolumn3836
      @hplccolumn3836 5 ปีที่แล้ว +7

I suppose there's a reason scholars who translate these texts, as well as the author of this video, use the word indifferent
All situations fall into three categories: Things we can control. Things we cannot control. Things over which we have some control. It's fine to care about the things over which you have control. It's hurtful to care about those you do not. Therefore you should be indifferent to them.
Equanimous might be how stoics appear to the unexperienced because stoics clearly do not to care about the things most people care about(and therefore are not as easily upset) but equanimity itself is just a symptom of their tranquility, not the cause.

    • @nerglersstuff8890

@@hplccolumn3836 "but equanimity itself is just a symptom of their tranquility, not the cause."
Care to elaborate on this? I find my understanding of english lacking and I struggle to understand what you mean.
Also I'd love for you to retort on this statement: I find that stoics oft preach the idea that you want to be with the world. Not of, without or within. Be what nature intended for you, and care about what is. Be with results, not of, without or within results.
Example of my current understanding of stoicm:
Go to a circus and indulge with the flesh. Be mindful to not set yourself beside your flesh's desires. Be mindful to not become a product of the flesh's desires. Be mindful of not losing yourself within the flesh's desires. Claiming to be without desires is as foolish as being lost within the desires. Finding equanimity even with hypocrisy is what separates the stoic from the masses.
I am a student, and wish to learn more which is why I ask.

    • @jamiedorsey4167
      @jamiedorsey4167 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

@Excalibur I like that word too. I also think words like objectivity or perspective get at some important quality about stoicism. Buddhism, which shares a fair bit with the stoics, also makes a distinction between indifference and equanimity. They promote equanimity and refer to indifference as a "near enemy" of it, meaning that it is very similar but slightly different in a negative way.
I think there should a sort of openness to life and that to me indifference sort of implies a kind of callousness that shuts out the world rather than impartially accepting and making do with whatever comes.

Nietszche would disagree. He talks about two conflicting parts inside us: one represented by Apollo, another by Dionysus. Apollo represents reason, order, light, while Dionysus represents drunkenness, passion, leaving the "self". Both parts cycle around, making our life a tragedy, but we can only truly live by accepting our tragic state. According to Nietzsche, stoicism forms an illusion on our lives. By putting reason above else and denying momentary pleasures, it denies our dionysian part; it's repression, and not freedom, to live by strict laws you impose upon yourself.
Though in the end, both Nietzche and stoicism are looking for the same thing: a way to live life. It's important to know both sides of the coin to know what works for you. Meditating, excercising, being "productive"... I truly believe that isn't the only path to happiness.

Or get remembered of her, after that I am nearly useless, I would even say toxic....
I try to let go of her, allow my self to try to let her go to the bigger picture and shit..... but afterwards I am still... I would say depressed.
I´ve been already with another woman, tried atleast a bit to reach out for other woman, but still this shit takes me down, let´s me think about the past and not really let´s me live in the moment nore really fully let´s me plan or live in the future....
I fell alone. I mean I watched nearly all of ur vids. and tried my best to get into that content ( most likely even adapted to it in my daily live...)
But I still feel like I have lost sth. Not her but a part of me which makes me loose control after a while when I am alone
I really used to be a person that can spend nearly weeks without real social contact....
( I am right now a bit drunk/mad, so If u try to answer me consider that .... but I nearly get driven to madness by that shit and hope somebody might help me)

Think deeply about your past relationship , it seems to be one sided, with you expecting a lot ,while the other person gradually became indifferent.

TBH, we are important and if we have bigger view or ready to be open minded then we'll realise most of the things we do or experience are unnecessary and so we have power to ignore them, like ignorance is bliss, and it is. don't let bad stuffs enter in your mind nor focus when u create in ur mind.

That really encourage me to get up early and try to dedicate most of the short time i have on earth to the disciplines i like. Cool video, im definitely going to read something about stoicism

Patanjali wrote extensively about this subject in his _Yoga Sutras_
Said very simply, he defined attachment as an over-fondness for or over-aversion to anything. He taught that Yoga (not simply the physical postures, but meditation, contemplation, etc) was a means by which the seeker could simultaneously detach oneself from uncontrollable phenomena of life and unite one’s mind with the numinous.

This philosophy is very useful and I am very grateful... I only differ in that I see each of us as the Universe and hence powerful and important versus tiny and insignificant. Our power comes from our ability to internally respond and not be overwhelmed with lack or abundance. We decide what is important.

Love it! I have never realized that I’m applying this to my life. Agree with it so much:) by figuring out this way on my own, seeing it through nature, I really can love life more but not taking it real serious cos I know I will die one day, I just want happiness now. Money and power whatever I don’t care as long as I can survive😁 I love Daoism if anyone knows it’s too follow the natural flow

I once beheld Stoicism as the ideal standard of living one can consciously choose. Over time, I reflected on how disconcertingly comfortable I became with this system of social and physical disengagement: this withdrawal.
However, I began to rethink things when I saw man as he is; a subconscious solipsist. The world and everything one does within it inevitably seems to revolve around the individual. And thus the philosophical profundity of Stoicism is precluded once this disengaged sense of self prevails over our false sense momentary withdrawal. Yes, while we should strive to be indifferent of all the uncontrollable suffering that our world has got on promo, we should never condone *apathy*. Because however jading it is to constantly put everyone else's nonsense before ours, persistent empathy projects in people who both have the wits to distance themselves from life's drama, as well as the bravery to battle it head on.

This guy I used to be with wrote a post on Quora one time directed at me saying how stupid he thought I was for taking an indifference stance on politics and most everything. He's just like my family. They always belittle me and paint me in a negative light. Then love bomb me when they realize they're about to lose me for good. My mom is suddenly so kind and caring and generous. She wasn't any of those things, the polar opposite, while I lived with her. As soon as I move out she's offering to do things for me, and help me, saying she "loves" me. Anyways. The guy treated me like crap, exactly how my family treats me, always trying to change me and punishing me for not agreeing with them and submitting to their belief system. The relationship was just really abusive in so many ways. And I guess I put up with it because that's all I was used to. He was familiar.

In other words, it's called turning inwards, understanding our thoughts & emotions from a detached, neutral standpoint.... Philosophy from India says the same thing, but it also wants us to create a distance with our own physical body, ie. De-identify ourselves from it
But, human intellect can go thus far only....
Wisdom is beyond human intellect, so we have got to transcend even that
