  • This is a vlog that i have been meaning to film for a while,I managed to get the footage for this vlog a while back at the BHPC event at Gravesend Cyclo Park. The problem is that the footage has been sat gathering dust as to a house move taking up pretty much all of my spare time so the channel has taken a back seat for a bit, now I am back with a vengeance. So tonight I bring to you Steven Slade, five time champion and his wonderful Streamliner Beano.

I remember Steve was starting after me on a time trial. He said "if you see me coming just hold the racing line and I'll go past you" .
I said, "I'm not that bloody slow."
About a minute later he came past me like a rocket.
Almost scared me to death 🤣

I saw man and machine racing at Darley Moor a couple of years ago. Beano was ultra rapid and it blew my mind when Steve got out and wasn't a young elite athlete.

I remember watching Steve do a few fast laps around Derby velodrome. super fast. The guys there couldn't believe how fast he was going.

Everything inside that bike is crude. It looks like a 15 year old made it in shop class. But all of it is put together just right to get the job done.
It's the shell that's the amazing part. It must be extremely efficient even though it too looks pretty beat up and low budget.
At the end of the day, it's not looks that win races, it's everything working more efficiently than any other bike on the track that day. This bike wins.

Been kinda going through Velo-ads withdrawal of late so I'm so glad to see you back, John! This is a fascinating interview with Steve and the Beano. I first saw him at the World Championships in Kent and was shocked at his speed and command of the course. Great close ups of the streamliner which bears the well earned scars of its many years of racing. Kudos to you for the interview and of course Maggie for the superb editing. Keep 'em coming, pal!

а ведь этот чувак ещё в 1987 или 1984 -м был на фото в советском журнале "Техника молодёжи"...и вот спустя столько лет я вижу его живьём!... я помню его веломобиль из коричневого карбона и необычную форму обтекателя.

Yes Steve is still going strong and very much alive.

@@velo-ads4206 t is important that after so many years I see the same bicycle. This velomobile is not some impractical and unused, but a real, combat bike, with a complex system of retractable landing gear, a shabby fairing.. He is a real "crazy" enthusiast and.... respect for him and those like him!

What an amazing bike and person. I would love to see a new version of Beano made with, how should I say, "Other" materials.

Excellent interview, John. I remember seeing "BEANO" at the WHPVC in Deal in 2018.
I have now increased my Bents to four. Just added a Rans Rocket SWB to my LWB Homebuilt RWD and my two FWD's ( Cruzbike Freerider and the Dahon Convert FWD, homebuilt) .
Good to hear that you are back ''on track'', John.

This thing is remarkably fast while looking remarkably crude and battle-hardened. Those scratches at 2:09...

    I remember the original Beano,
    It's an impressive machine.
And Steve is an amazing rider

    Hey John,
To echo Four utubez below, I am well impressed that Steven Slade is not an olympic athlete in his Thirties, but a gent in his 'Prime' :-). Gives hope to us all!
Good to see you back, (new dreads and all:-), and hope that 'sales' are going well!

I still don't understand why so many velos are three wheeled when this design appears to work so well. Lighter, less cost, and faster, next to any comparable trike as far as I can tell.

I used to have some TH-cam videos saved that were taken from inside Steve's beano as he raced around a track. They were really amazing to watch. Does anyone have those saved? I can't find them.

I Have tried to fit in the beano a couple of times and it’s such a tight fit my legs wouldn’t go in and my shoulders wouldn’t allow the top on. Goodness knows how miles thought he would squeeze in.
Still would love to have a proper go in it.

John , l wish you would film bikes more while person is talking than keeping camera on them. It's so fast I can barely take a screen shot. Thanks

I've watched this so many times and I still can't understand what stops the landing wheels folding up by themselves when they're trundling along the ground - I can see that the two cables pull them up aided by the two long springs, but what is the 'stop' mechanism that prevents them auto retracting? I'll have to have a proper nosey at Rhyl.
The whole bike is a masterstroke of packaging - Miles is really on top of his game (well apart from only making it big enough for someone 6" shorter than originally intended...) :)

You would have to contact Miles Kingsbury and see if he still has the moulds and whether he is willing to build another.

Please stop trying to be so bubbly and interesting. It is too over-the-top. You don't need to - you are a nice, intelligent guy who is interesting enough without the excessive enthusiasm.
