Whilst it's an absolute nightmare there is a silver lining. You can now really get to grips with your very different, very spectacular Dark brown mare. That little mare is class and requires you to really get to grips with her. She can teach you so much and will take you so far, so in having this break from your two ponies you can focus on the Horse.

I’m so glad you are in tune with your horses. Many riders put their own desires first and don’t hear what their horses are trying to tell. It is sign of true horsemen/person that they actually hear what their horse is saying over the persons wants or goals.
I went to college for degree in equine field. We were using fair grounds temporarily. We had taken 10 horses to be lunged in their indoor arena (it was a Saturday we had no classes but since we had horses at fair grounds that was the horses only avenue for exercise).
It was middle of the winter we had lots of snow and very cold. The horses did not want to go into the arena when we got them in they were all acting up. This was not usual for theses horses. I told my fellow students that something was wrong. the way our horses were acting was not because they had to much energy they were afraid. I said something was wrong and we needed to leave. Some students wanted to continue but I insisted that something wasn’t right and we needed to leave ( very calm horses were freaking out). I insisted that horses knew something was wrong that we needed to leave. The other students finally agreed with me. We had been in building for 15 minutes before I convinced fellow students to leave.
30 minutes later building collapsed due to metal fatigue and snow load. Nobody was hurt because the horses heard what we couldn’t and because we listened. Nobody was in arena when it collapsed. Things could have been much different had some insisted on ignoring what the horses were trying to say.

Wow, that says a lot about how sensitive horses are. Riders are smart to listen to them. You were smart. Thank goodness it all turned out well.

Most animals are more intuitive to what is about to happen than humans. And we all need to watch them, listen to their responses and act in theur best interests st all times. Responsible stewardship, whatever animal or bird or aquatic is involved.
Sorry to hesr your double blow Megan but it gives Wilma the opportunity to come to the fore. All the best for Jam and Winnie in their recuperation. Best wishes, Jacky

It’s always a gutting experience feeling that something’s wrong with your horse and having it confirmed - I bought a lovely wee thoroughbred in March this year with the disclaimer that she could have a bit of a buck and was lazy to ride in the arena, but she was foot perfect in every other aspect. We had an absolutely horrific ride at pony club last month where she was fizzy, stiff, and wouldn’t settle into her work, and it immediately set off alarm bells in my head that this wasn’t just her personality or being overexcited. Unfortunately we’ve now got it confirmed that she has kissing spines and isn’t a ridden prospect anymore 🥲
A horse BEING a pain, more often than not, is actually IN pain. Good on you for listening to your girl, your bond will be stronger than ever for it ❤

It's been a rough year for the horse world. We've lost riders this year and Meg, darling girl, you are wise. Your horses are off, and you're stepping back, and maybe this is someone looking out for you and your horses that has brought you to where you are now. It's rough, but you're making smart choices. On the bright side, you'll be able to share baby videos, and maybe we'll get to see some rehab/recovery videos of you and your equine health team bringing the ladies back up to speed.

I feel for you because I have been there. Also anyone who would shame you for representing her to that jump doesn't understand how every horse is different and situations come up where you need to try again to get answers. I think it's amazing that you have the opportunity to give your horses such great care. Don't feel bad about being upset about these things; even though they are "small" to some or you have "more horses to ride" doesn't mean that you can't get upset when some of them are not well. You love all of them and it shows ❤

I had a mare who at 5yo just wasn’t quite right. She was sound, but positive to a flexion. We x rayed her fetlock and found a chip/ OCD fragment that was loose. She has fetlock arthroscopy surgery and had 4 months box rest and nearly a year of rehab and she has been sound since! The surgery showed the fragment had been so loose it had damaged all the cartilage in her joint, but we are 7 years post surgery with no problems!

18:16 this is the EXACT thing that happened with me and my little gray 2* horse years ago.. he had very uncharacteristic stops on course at a jump with a drop on the back side. He passed every vet check before we traveled and on site at the event but when I got home and had the X-RAYS done, sure enough, bone chip in the joint. We opted for arthroscopic surgery to remove it and he came back 100% but it did take time and patience. Hang in there Meg! You’ll get there soon enough ❤

You are so choosing the right path for both horses, but especially Jam. She is such a Brave Horse that when she says no, there is a reason for it for sure. And you found it really quickly.
I wonder if the side bone, which is a stress response-excess bone being laid down to strengthen the main bone due to weight-loading pressures- might’ve started back when she originally got the tendon injury on the other leg. I wouldn’t be surprised at all. I have knee and ankle issues from injuries, and when I limp too much on one side, even slightly, I pay for it on the other leg later.

I also applaud you for being a good horse woman and putting your horses first! I’ve actually had to retire my top mare due to a career ending torn ligament, which we also think she injured out in her pasture. That blow hit me hard, but I take comfort from the fact that she gave me her best years, and that she’s still comfortable enough to retire. Especially since my vet said most horses with that kind of injury have to be euthanized. So I’m grateful I still have my once in a lifetime girl.

I don’t want to downplay what happened to Jam but you honestly got lucky. My gelding went the tiniest bit lame on one foot just like you said jam did - only sometimes noticeable and only on the lunge. We live pretty rural so there isn’t a readily available X-ray near us, so we weren’t able to X-ray him for a few months. In the meantime we tried everything else we could think of but absolutely nothing helped and we couldn’t figure out what was wrong at all. When we finally could make it to the vet 3 hours away with the X-ray, he scanned him and immediately found the problem. He’d fractured one side of his pedal bone on one of his front feet (I don’t remember which one it was now). Solution ended up being a specialised shoe to protect the bone while it healed and basically a year of doing nothing (not box rest because movement was important to keep blood flow but just complete turnout for a year). Thankfully it did heal ok and he eventually went back into work again but it was such a roller coaster of a journey.

Oh boy, that it was a tremendous roller coaster. How stressful not to be able to find out right away what was going on. I’m so glad you hung in there.

Such massive respect for you Meg!!!!! I know how much this is poop sandwich but putting your girls first is the absolute right thing to do and a wonderful example ( reminder) to everyone who follows you what putting the horses welfare first means ❤

Oh I have had weeks like what you had, they are rough! I love how much you consider your horses, Winnie will recuperate and hopefully there is no issue with her hip. Love the plan you have for Jammy, it’s not just about the physical but the mental as well. With surgery and time, she will be raring to go when Spring comes ❤ And don’t ever let a comment make you question the decisions you make with your horses, I would have done the same thing! Good on ya Meg ❤️‍🩹

So weird Meg I am having exactly the same issue as Winnie with my horse. Did something muscular in the field, super sudden change in his behaviour and refusing to work at all, (he’s dramatic lol) even down to the remedial shoeing as well! We are back riding slowly so fingers crossed for you ❤

Im just so happy that Jammy said "i don't wanna do this" and you listened. That might make her want to tell you when she's feeling unwell more, because she knows you will listen to her

This is completely out of topic, but when you were talking about people asking you about when you're coming to Wellington, your eyes looked HELLA blue in that light.
Sad to hear about the news, but happy both are resting well for the next year!

What a wonderful baby who knew to tell you that she couldn't go...and so amazing that you listened to her! I totally agree that re-presenting was a good idea to be sure! Good girl 😊

Thank you for sharing all that you share! It’s always tough when our four legged partners aren’t feeling 100% but then to allow us in on the story, (which is continued great learning for all of us as well) well, that is so greatly appreciated!

Oh Meg, bless you. What a shitty week. I am so disappointed for you BUT admire you so much. You always put you horses first and their health is your top priority. Jammy will be right again in time and so will Winnie (her head in your lap was the sweetest). This just means you can go to Badders and enjoy supporting Em! So much love to you all xxxx p.s can we please have an Ari, Moose, Brego update sometime? ❤

Whew, I clicked on this so quickly when I saw the title!!! It's not permanent, and a 'boring vlog' shows what the reality is like for you amazing ladies! It's frustrating as hell but you gotta surf the wave and hang in there - we're all here rooting for you! And yes, you can go camp at Badders, get slightly buzzed without having to worry about waking up early in the morning to get ready to compete - maybe work on your quarter-markings?? LOL.

Sending lots of love to you and healing vibes for the poorly ponies. Hopefully Jam and Winnie will be back to full strength soon - in the mean time, although it may feel a bit rubbish to not be going out to events etc as frequently it might take the pressure off you slightly.

I have had a similar experience, where my horse suddenly started kicking out which is really unusual for her. It has taken us 2+ months to try and find the cause. It is a real shame about jammy and badminton, I am gutted for you, but you have done the complete right thing to not rush her recovery, this is the reality of owning horses. I wish Jammy and Winnie the best recovery ❤️‍🩹
