This series came out at the exact same time as Slime. Rimuru found this village of cute goblins and saved them from wolves.
Watching both series at the same time was an interesting contrast.
It confused the coomers and set good jokes. Lol

Put it in this perspective;
The demons feared the DooM Slayer for his ferocity, rage, and hatred of their kind.
The goblins fear Goblin Slayer for the very same reason.
Goblin Slayer is basically if the DooM Slayer got isekaied.
I mostly agree, but wanted to add that the demons did not fear the doom slayer

Jk, aside from the rather graphic introduction to the series, i think you'll really dig this show.
"What could possibly go wrong?"..... oh dear......
A lot of people didn't like the show or quit after this episode because of THAT scene. I personally think it was neccessary to make the veiwer hate goblins as much as he does.
Also goblins are usually looked down on as trash mobs so this first episode does a really good jobb at setting goblins up to be a real threat
it was perfect scene and build up of scene, perfect 1st episode, it was a total success at its purpose:
"there's not good goblin, except a goblin that never comes out of its hole" // "there's no good goblin, except a dead goblin" // goblins are monsters, that must be slayed, there's no "grey" with them, they will kill, torture, and "breed" ("R"), that is their existence... which is something that can't co-exist with the other species/races, obviously...
we don't need any more such "suggestive-graphic" scenes, we understand what 'goblins' are, and are about, loud and clear, lol, such a masterpiece of literature for a first episode, establishing so well the dark fantasy world, and especially that of the goblins (as well as whatever else too...)
both, in dark fantasy and in our own real world, whether its war or whatever situation without social-physical-etc such barriers/protections/walls:
males are killed (and yes, sometimes but very uncommonly/rarely, also "breed", "R-ed", too)
and
females are "breed" ("R-ed") (and sometimes are killed too, as well)

Love the whole viewer warning and Kit going, "Oh, blood? Anime has blood." Yes. Some go even farther.
But it's a great show and I hope you enjoy it.
the 2 main questions/comments with this episode...
1. the goblins coat their arrows' heads/tips and (sword/axe/dagger/etc) blades with poisons/toxins/venoms and also with their own feces/urine too, so, even if Priestess had a 'cure poison' spell, Wizard would still have died from infection/bacteria that is growing on/from the urine/feces within her stab wound into her stomach
A. Priestess' "healing" spell, healed up the physical wound itself
B. however, she also needed a "cure poison" spell/potion, to remove the poison/toxin/venom, which she didn't have at this point in time
C. and even then, there's still the infection/bacteria from the urine/feces, and as far as I know, there's NO spell/potion for that, lol
it was a mercy killing, she was going to die, no matter what, and it'd be, painfully and slowly... GS saved her from some extremely horrendous suffering.... by mercifully killing her "immediately/instantly/quickly" (within a sec or two)
2. those goblin babies that GS (Goblin Slayer) killed, how many of them were there? and... then, how many abducted village girls were there? goblin babies have very fast gestation (pregnancy) time (~ 3 days, to at most, 1 week)... those abducted village girls were the (brood)mothers of those goblin babies, but they were quite lucky, as they each only had a single goblin baby to birth out, and they only had a single birthing too, as usually, each impregnation, fertilizes multiple eggs, with them having multiple babies with each birthing... and, since the noob party, and then GS, to the rescue, arrived so soon, they only had one birthing session... as well, "goblins multiply quickly"... unfortunately, Fighter, is likely going to be popping out some goblin babies in a few days, where-ever she ends up at... some monastery or where-ever, lol...
with only a few females, and only within a few weeks, often have birthed out ~ 50 goblin babies...
(there are only male goblins, so in order to not go extinct, they require other species/races of females, and those females likely never give consent, so the goblins have no choice, but to "R", else they fail to continue their species/race/genes/dna, going extinct)
I remember every other new anime had a S.A scene in their first episode after Goblin Slayer. There were like, that’ll draw them in
