I adore this movie. The battle between Dourif and George C. Scott is some of the most incredible acting I've ever seen. Dourif in specific is on a whole other level.
One thing we must to recognize: Blatty wrote dialogues as no one does. His characters have a unique charm, mixing unpretentious daily chit chats with conversations about quite deep subjects. I believe that his background as a comedy writer and later consagration in horror genre is the main reason why he had a lot of ease to switch his dialogues' tone.
In The Exorcist, Regan was supposed to say “This time, you’re going to lose” when Father Merrin enters the bedroom, then later she’d sing like a choir boy during a break in the exorcism. These scenes were abandoned, but added to The Exorcist III.
The hallway jump scare scene was one of my favorite theater experiences ever!! The entire theater collectively shit their pants!!! Took everyone about 5 minutes to settle down! Such a great time!!
I created and taught a class at FSU called Analyzing Terror: The History of Horror Movies. None of those 19 year olds had a clue what was ahead. No pun. Watching them scream and reel back and terror is my proudest teaching moment. Warmed my black heart.
By far my favourite of the Exorcist movies, I would even say it's Brad Dourif's best performance, truly chilling stuff! This movie is quite the experience
You should see The Ninth Configuration. It's the real sequel to the Exorist with Exorcist 3 as the third part.. It's not a horror but it has both comic and horror aspects.
I saw this in the theater in 1990 with my roommates who aren't horror fans and we all loved it. The entire audience screaming in that hallway sequence was unforgettable. This is a rare instance where the original theatrical cut is way better than the director's cut that came out later. Also, another great example of less is more. This is way scarier than the original film. Another great sequel is Psycho II, coming 22 years after the first film. Check that out.
The Exorcist III audience is 2nd only behind Endgame and Andrew and Tobey entering NWH for most bonkers reactions. People, including me, were grabbing on to whomever was sitting next to them, friend or stranger!
By far the most terrifying thing about this movie, and brad dourif's performance as the Gemini killer, as it was brought up countless times in the courtroom for the Jeffery Dahmer case. Apparently this movie was one of his biggest insperations behind some of those acts of murder
The woman who plays the detectives wife is Zora Lampert (not sure I spelled her name right), she starred in "Let's Scare Jessica to Death". Great 70's cult horror classic.
The reference to The Fly was intentional. That actor was one of the stars of The Fly II. And if you like Scott Wilson, do yourself a favor and view In Cold Blood. Don't wait for or expect it to be on your polls. The true sequel to The Exorcist was the first season of the tv series with Geena Davis.
Growing up, I used to win things on the radio all the time. This was one of those things. I won 4 movie passes to see this. When I say this movie scared the BEJESUS out of everyone in the audience, I’m undercutting it. The lady on the ceiling messed me up. I couldn’t sleep that night. I’m usually not scared of horror movies, but this. This is something else. ❤ thanks for reminding me of the childhood terror.
If you ever go to D.C., go to the stairs. I made it about 8 steps up, froze for a picture, and made my way back down fast as I could. They are dangerously steep. I cant believe theyre not considered a hazard or something. Yes, you would absolutely roll that many times and die. It's actually not at all adjacent to the house; two separate filiming areas. The stairs are actually right next to a gas station.
I was hoping you both flew out your chairs at THAT bit with the big scissors! You both spotted Fabio but did you notice Samuel L Jackson? (He's dubbed!) Ironically at 3:34, Vanessa says "Brundle-Fly". The actor who triggers her, plays Anton Bartok, the villian in The Fly II!
Definitely an underrated sequel. It ticks so many boxes without being visually graphic with the gore. It's so subtle but over the top at times to. And genuinely creepy when it needs to be. Besides the obvious jump scare, one of my favourite scenes is the random pov shot as the detective approaches the fathers murder scene.
Robert, you're correct: There wasnt an exorcism in the original version. It was the production studio that insisted WPB add an exorcism, and he was furious.
I like this Exorcist movie better than the first one because the caliber of acting IMO was better and the movie was overall more effective at scaring you rather than depend on special effects to horrify you. Another movie that will definitely creep you out is called, "The Autopsy of Jane Doe", and the 2010 remake of "The Crazies" is another awesome movie too.
Written and directed by the author of the original Exorcist novel and its sequel, Legion. While the original is more straight-forward as a supernatural horror, this is far closer to a thriller with supernatural elements. In a way, it brings the concepts from the first one down closer to earth with the medical side of things and the description of how the possession works. Far more so in the book and the original script, which didn't include an exorcist scene because the novel was called Legion, not Exorcist 2. Combine this with Blatty's surreal and sometimes comedic tone and you get one of the best horror sequels ever made. As a writer his dialogue is extremely unique, and as a director his emphasis on sound design and atmosphere is very effective. I love the first film, but this is my favorite Exorcist movie.
@@nemya9586 I saw this in the theater the night it released, so I was 14. For whatever reason, I developed the biggest crush on George C., and swoon after him in all his films. I'm so weird. 😆
The Exorcist 3 was released in theaters back in the summer of 1990. I remember trailers for it. It featured quick shots of Father Karras and had the Tubular Bells music featured. And it was CREEPY!!!
I actually like this movie more than the original. It scared the death out of me the first time I watched it on HBO back in the day. This is also what made me a Brad Dourif fan.
Hii Late to the party I’m a huge fan by the way I love your movie reactions so much, those actors are amazing 🤩 so far, I’m glad you enjoyed the movie.
Great reaction! Ranked 34 in my favourite 200 movies, and i love it much more than the original. The scene involving the nurse is my favourite jump scare, even when i'm expecting it, it gets me lol.
Since both “The Exorcist” and “The Exorcist III: Legion” movies were written by William Peter Beatty (based off his own novels), they’re the only two stories that count as canon. The rest in the series…exist.
One of my favorite horror movies of all time (if not so, one of my favorite movies ever made), directed and written by the great William Peter Blatty, who wrote the original novels (''The Exorcist'' & ''Legion''), and the screenplay of WIliam Friedkin's masterpiece. Check out also his incredible directorial debut, ''The Ninth Configuration'' (another favorite movie of mine), it has an amazing cast, a few them also later appeared in ''The Exorcist III''. Greetings from The Netherlands.
This movie is supposedly the third in a trilogy. Although it's not really a trilogy in the sense of the word like Star Wars or Lord of the Rings. The Exorcist Ninth Configuration Exorcist 3 Ninth Configuration is also written and directed by Blatty, the writer of the original and Legion. Legion is actually much different than this theatrical version. Before they had Jason Miller back playing Karris, when the production started Miller wasn't available. Dourif was originally playing both Karris and The Gemini. The studio wanted to change the ending because they wanted an exorcism at the end so to reshoot, Miller was actually available at the time of the reshoot for the ending so they reshot the scenes that Dourif played and made it Exorcist 3 instead of Legion. Legion was the title of the book Blatty wrote in a kind of response to The Exorcist 2. And Legion was the shooting title. The original scenes with only Dourif as both roles exists on a mish-mash of the finished film and spliced in VHS tape they found. I'm so glad you chose the theatrical version in that Legion really doesn't work well for a theatrical ending. There was no exorcism and it ended much differently. I prefer the theatrical version. If you remember in the original The Exorcist Regan interrupts Father Dyer, played by a different actor in both movies, at the piano. She looks at the astronaut that is going to go to the moon, I believe. In The Ninth Configuration Scott Wilson plays that character. It's quite a trippy movie that is supposed to take place just after the original The Exorcist. In The Ninth Configuration what occurred in The Exorcist is never discussed but if you pay attention to the name of the failed astronaut you'll find that he's the same character that Chris McNeil invited to the party when Regan peed on the floor just after she tells the astronaut he's going to die up there. In The Ninth Configuration he is in a mental hospital and it's well known that he's a failed astronaut. It's a wild movie and upon first view I had no idea where it was going, but if you give it a try it's got a pretty good story. The actor who played Karris is in it but as a different role... I hope you take the time to maybe do a reaction to that movie someday.
One of the best sequels ever and a top 10 horror film for me. Loved it since the first time I saw it and, for me, I prefer it to the first one. Great reaction guys 🙂
I saw this in the theater with my friends. Brad affected me so deeply that for literally decades afterwards, I couldn’t watch when he was on the screen in anything. XFiles or Lord of the Rings etc… he absolutely terrified me. My husband would even tease me and say “oh look, it’s your fav actor”. This is a great horror movie on its own and it should have been part two instead of part three. First rule of the Exorcist trilogy is to not discuss part two.
EXORCIST 3 had a lot of studio interference, specifically the ending and the title. But all things considered this is a great movie. And my favorite of the series.
This movie reminds me a lot of the Halloween movies especially ends lol was thinking that and then they said its been fifteen years lol I was like just like in Halloween lol
okay great film but this was more phycological battle of good and evil you had brad playing the gemini killer and jason miller playing farther caress but what made the film was the interplay between brad douriff and george c scott
Lucky guess, Vanessa. The Zodiac was William Blatty's inspiration for the Gemini. Coincidentally, the Zodiac opened his final letter in 1974, describing "The Exorcist" as the best satirical comedy film they'd ever seen. And to add to the horrors, "The Exorcist III" turned out to be the favourite film of another terrifying serial killer, Jeffrey Dahmer.
Exorcist III is almost as good as Exorcist 1 but was overshadowed by Exorcist II aka the worst sequel ever. Many people didn’t care to watch it because they thought it will be as bad as Exorcist II.
The demon kept the priest alive after the falling cause demons do that they've did it in supernatural and other stuff they can basically heal it seems like or kind of does but he survived the fall like Michael survived the fall and shots at the end of Halloween definitely makes sense why he could just get up and walk away lol plus the whole black eyes thing I thought he died in original was confused but then I'm like that has happened in other stuff lol
Its hopping around like in Halloween Michael killed his sister and same night Charlie killed his family maybe same thing Jaime tried to kill her step mom Corey killed his mom its like it loves to take people over and have them kill one member of their family and whoever they want after that lol
Only big difference is Michael don't talk while possessed in exorcist do but maybe its just different demons act differently or maybe its just they choose to act different in original it wanted a exorcism and the priest to come so it acts crazy vs in Michael its more subdue don't need to say anything lol yeah this reminds me of fallen too lol also shocker if you seen it very similar lol might be more like paranormal activity they not as chatty in that especially in second one she has some Michael like moments lol
Privy to the darkness of the world? Darkness or evil like Michael Myers lol anybody can be evil? Both Halloween and exorcist ends basically the same with the evil getting away and it can be anywhere in anybody lol
Brads performance in this reminds me of his performance in x files lol its collecting souls maybe that's what Michael doing killing all these people cause it can't be just family he's killing too many strangers vs family in original timeline and new one its just everyone lol and he likes to transfer the evil to his niece or sister or Corey lol
No don’t watch dominion and the exorcist believer was not connected to this franchise it ignores from the 2nd film onwards the believer is a brand new sequel picking up 50 years after the original and ignoring the 2nd 3rd 4th and 5th film
Course with Michael it could be demons like supernatural or demons like from his mind or subcious possessing him similar to these movies they talked about that in original could be all mental illness not possession lol

I definitely think the movie Fallen took a nod from this as you stated .
I adore this movie. The battle between Dourif and George C. Scott is some of the most incredible acting I've ever seen. Dourif in specific is on a whole other level.
One of the most infamous movie jumpscares that exist on film, and we all know which moment it is...
Such an incredible moment! 😱
One of the only ones that rivals is _that_ scare in Haunting of Hill House.
Infamous? One of the greatest jumpscares of all time is what it is lol
ohh yeah seen the film so many times i know its coming but every time i jump
@@JeshuaSquirrelyes! These two are the greatest jump scares in film!

I recognise that creepy snickering at 15:40. That's Regan's laugh from the first Exorcist.

Damien's headstone said he died in 1975. But the first Exorcist was set in 1973. Exorcist 3 was set in 1990
Another great Brad Dourif movie is 'Body Parts'
The priest has been sitting in the hospital for fifteen years just like Michael did lol

Your opening logo seems familiar to me. It sounds like the Super TV logo from the early 80s.
EXORCIST 3 IS SO FRIVKIN GOOD, IT'S LAUGHABLE HOW BAD EXORCIST 2 IS.
Definitely, the second one was basically a comedy, but this third one is so damn good
OMG! YOU HAVE TO WATCH ' REPOSSESSED ' Its stars Leslie Nielson and Linda Blair from the original Exorcist and it is sooooo funny.
A terrific film. Genuinely disturbing with Brad Dourif amazing as Gemini.
This was only best exorcist movie since the first one 😮👍.
when she says your not my son....thats the lady that was possessed in the beginning killing the priest :)
okay great film but this was more phycological battle of good and evil you had brad playing the gemini killer and jason miller playing farther caress but what made the film was the interplay between brad douriff and george c scott
the best in the franchise the exorcist and exorcist 3!
Lucky guess, Vanessa. The Zodiac was William Blatty's inspiration for the Gemini. And to add to the horrors, "The Exorcist III" turned out to be the favourite film of another terrifying serial killer, Jeffrey Dahmer.
It's weird, but Exorcist 3, Fallen and Wes Craven's Shocker have a LOT in common
An Exorcist series came out a few years ago with Gina Davis that wasn't bad.
Yeah Pt 2 is a waste of time - this was the true sequel, written and directed by the author of the original novel
When Evil Lurks is a contender to be the decade's best demon/religious horror movie

I prefer the theatrical cut. Too much was changed in Legion for the worse in my opionion.
We watched the theatrical cut. Didn't realize "Legion" was only in reference to the Director's Cut.
LOL - it's "Legion " not "lesions" 😮
Its a great film. I watched it when I was 10 the first time. It is brilliant.

No don’t watch dominion and the exorcist believer was not connected to this franchise it ignores from the 2nd film onwards the believer is a brand new sequel picking up 50 years after the original and ignoring the 2nd 3rd 4th and 5th film
Course with Michael it could be demons like supernatural or demons like from his mind or subcious possessing him similar to these movies they talked about that in original could be all mental illness not possession lol
the movie the exorcist dominian was filmed 2x the one with isabella scubraco is a better film
same story just changed it a bit
