Companies be like "you better buy our game or this franchise will die" and the proceeds to release to worst game known to existance and then trying to understand why it performed so bad come to the conclusion that it was the franchise's fault
I’m surprised people always think this is the case, wouldn’t it make more sense for the company to be intentionally killing the series off in instances like these? Like with Chibi-Robo, you make a game that is intentionally unacceptable but throw in “do it or else” so you have a motive/scapegoat to kill the series off with while still making a little cash from the fans who buy the game to support it. That way you don’t end up in an F-Zero situation where you don’t want to make a new game in the series but you can’t blame the series inactivity on death since you didn’t/don’t have a reason to kill it off that won’t make fans mad at you for “being selfish”.
I mean, they can’t really go in thinking those games will actually do well.

I think that’s because we not only don’t know how much the game actually sold, but we don’t know if it was an actual commercial flop or not. All Square said was that it didn’t hit their sales expectations, that can range anywhere from “it flopped” to “it sold decently but not enough”

The irony is that 2013 Tomb Raider ended up, eventually, being the best selling of the series with a staggering 11 million copies sold.
But Square Enix wanted it to sell 11 million at launch. Investors don't care about long term gains, they want numbers to go up every year no matter how infeasible that progressively becomes.

Fun fact: E.T was meant to be like that, but since it had to be a Christmas release, they expected the prototype in 5 weeks. After the tester played the game, he asked for a few changes, but the designer said it was the most he could do. And that's what caused E.T's failure.
That's not at all what happened, though? The Howard Scott Warshaw was only given five weeks to make a game period, not just the prototype. He had to find some way to adapt a movie like E.T. into an Atari game, which itself is basically an impossible task, and he's joked in modern interviews that he should have just made it a Pac-Man clone since it would've been easier and turned out better.

Looking at the ET for the Atari, its almost 40 years since the video game crash of 1983 and how they have improved making video games. Today, I think gaming industry should relearn from mistakes like they did 40 years ago.
That won't happen naturally, which is why another crash would be fantastic to kill off all the shitty devs and practices. But it won't happen because idiots keep buying pokemon and fifa.

Yeah if I'm not mistaken, according to his twitter, this is because he did not finish his Christmas video in time so did this basically as compensation.
@@ProwardGameplay I thought it's because the Christmas special would then be episode 250 and double as the season finale (similar to "A very Madden 08 Christmas" as episode 50, "It's Awesome Baby" being episode 100, "It's a Bargain Bin Christmas" episode 150 and "Borderline Forever" being episode 200). He just kinda messed up the schedule a bit, because he took a long break in 2022 (with the first episode releasing as late as the mid of May).
Edit: Yes, he does still work on the Christmas Special, but he would've probably just taken a break, had these videos released "regularly".

Every time someone talks about Mario + Luigi it hurts. If someone like me who knows nothing about game development/etc knows it was a terrible idea, why did this happen at all
A partners in time remake would have been better. Hell, putting it on switch might have helped quite a bit.

@@bestaround3323 Partners in Time wouldn't have sold any better than Bowser's Inside Story, considering the latter was the best-selling entry in the series. The reason Alphadream didn't make a game for Switch was likely because they couldn't afford to after the money they lost from Paper Jam and the Superstar Saga remake. They simply didn't have the resources to transition to a home console after working exclusively with handhelds, especially after a couple commercial failures.
This may be why Nintendo didn't bail them out, they knew Alphadream wasn't capable of transitioning to the Switch, so they let them tank, enabling them to take the franchise into their own hands. We currently have yet to see a Mario & Luigi game on Switch, but I personally think it's only a matter of time at this point.

Holy crap I was not EXPECTING another musical number on a Scott vid! The production on this was phenomenal. Takes me back to watching avgn with my siblings and cousins when I was 13, it really does feel good seeing Scott release banger after banger videos back to back
