Im getting a frontier for the very same reasons. I even love the idea of getting it almost new with low miles to then start taking proper care of it. A rear axle assembly and a timing chain/tensioner in over 175 000 miles? 60k towing mid-heavy? Yes please. I love how this simple honest truck just reminds us all of the original smaller mid size pick ups that actually made the name of the chassis. Now these ridiculous monsters all over the place... Towing the groceries and some shopping bags. 1 dude. Makes me wanna puke.

The more simple the vehicle, the longer it will last. My aging 1997 Jeep Wrangler has no power anything, save power brake. Nothing is automatic, save the timing. Everything is manual. It had 409,000 mile on the original engine, manual gearbox, axles, wiring, and even the exhaust. Unfortunately, it has the original seats. They are not very pretty. But the old Jeep runs like new, uses no oil, is straight as an arrow, has lots of power, anx ready for another 409,000 miles. I bought it new with 11 miles on it in late 1996. It was always the aim to keep it 25 years minimum. The 25th year is approaching. I have no plans to part with my dear Stargazer (my old Jeep). I am certain I can easily get another decade from her.

Other things I've replaced was the fuel level sensor, number 3 coil pack(and all on that side as the intake manifold has to come off), and crank sensor. Did all the work on it myself. What I say is look at the platform and choose based on how you want to build the rig, not necessarily how it is stock out of the factory- For example my titan-swapped (long travel 4wd) Xterra with locking rear and front differential will outperform any 4runner or tacoma out of the factory. My last 2 trucks were GM, and I was constantly under them fixing everything under the sun. I just couldnt take it anymore and found my 2015 Frontier while I was driving around town looking for trucks. I wanted the titan, but was offered to take a ride in a frontier, and I fell in love with it. It can tow, it can haul, it can seat 4 adults, it has heated seats and a CD player, and its 4x4. I was sold. I sold my silverado 3 weeks later, and I havent looked back. I LOVE this truck. The power and comfort are second to none. This truck puts the colorado/canyon to shame. Great review from a real long term owner. I also am a Frontier owner and it has been a great little truck: 2007 NISMO, 4.0L engine, 4x4 6 speed manual, king cab, long bed with 185,000 miles. I live in the hills of Pennsylvania and regularly tow about 4,500LBS with my trailer and compact tractor with no issues climbing or descending the hills. After completing my military service in Georgia, I hooked up my 16' cargo trailer and packed up all my belongings to return home about 1,000 miles. Hitting the CAT scale, I discovered my GCVW was 12,700 LBS! Again, no issues and averaged around 13 MPG even being grossly over weight. Same as this gentleman, I needed to have the timing chain replaced around 80,000 miles. Other repairs: 110,000 clutch, 112,000 rear end (removed diff lock, installed limited slip), 125,000 front wheel bearings, 175,000 ball joints, NO other major issues. I have no doubts I will see 200K + and another 5 years with this truck. I have no second thoughts about the capability of this truck off road or long haul road trips :)

I know this is about a Frontier, but I have a 2010 Nissan Titan and the thing has been a tank. Everything on it is still original and I have about 127k miles on it. Rides like the day I got it. Only ever changed oil on that thing. Granted I live in Arizona, but I do take it up North where there is snow and salt and no rust on it. I haven’t ever towed a crazy amount of weight, usually my side by side or quad and trailer so never more than 4K pounds but it handles it like a champ and I wouldn’t hesitate doubling that weight. This was the perfect truck and it’s a shame nobody ever gave the Titan’s more thought. They were way overbuilt for their time and I wouldn’t hesitate taking it on a cross country trip today even with all original components. It’s that tough and reliable.

I own a 2005 Frontier. Has been a good truck but this and later yrs had issues with timing chain guide replacements (mentioned at $1700) and an issue with radiator failing (not mentioned) that causes rad fluid leak into trans. These two issues were common enough to force recallls.

It's an honest midsize pickup. It has good power, I can set the cruise while in 6th gear on the highway and rarely have to downshift for a hill. It holds 70-75 mph in high gear, with very little issue.

Also for 2006 Japanese automakers used a different method for calculating horsepower and torque. A 2005 Frontier was rated at 265 HP and 284 Lb-Ft Torque, however after switching to using the new calculation method it was changed to 261 HP and 281 Lb-Ft Torque. We have a 08 Nissan Xterra. Pretty much the suv version of this truck and its been a real trooper. People don’t realize but this truck is built real beefy with a fully boxed heavy frame derived from the titan. All of its vulnerable components sit above the frame line for off road escapades. The engine is head and shoulders a better engine than the tacoma when it comes torque and it feels it even though its so old.
Our xterra is sitting at 150,000 miles of which a ton of those were off road. Its never been out of alignment and still drives as smooth as day one. Only issue weve had is the computer went out, which happens a lot here with all types of vehicles because of how hot it gets here.
A lot of times people under appreciate these things because they get terrible mileage, but honestly one look at how beefy these things are built and it makes total sense.
You want an honest truck that as long as u do its recommended maintenance will last? This is it, get em while they are still avail.
On another note i see nissan hardbodies all over the place still. This is as close as you can get to that kind of longevity in todays modern world.

Nice vid. Good to see the old trusty Frontier get some recognition. A few corrections though. You can buy parts for and rebuild the rear M226 axles. There are even aftermarket lockers, gears and armor bits available. The best part about this erra of Nissans is suspension and some drivetrain parts from the titan will swap to the Frontier, Xterra and Pathfinder. This includes front suspension, front diff. You can even swap in the the V8 from the Titan. Essentially you have a factory mid travel suspension that is all bolt on. Great options for those who want to do mods or build overlanding rigs.

I agree with you on the Titan. When my wife and I were looking for a good used truck a couple years ago, we specifically wanted a 1st Gen Titan. We ended up buying a 2015 Titan SV 4x4 at a Nissan Dealer, they tried SO HARD to sell us on the new 2016 (at the time) Titan and we just couldn't get past the looks. Just like the Frontier of this Gen, they are just good looking trucks. Nothing fancy, they just do their job without any fuss. We have had our Titan 3 yrs now and put 40k miles on it so far. Only Issue was the fan clutch which was replaced under warranty. Recently our factory navigation system that the truck came with is going bonkers at times, and the rear glass has a leak. We did buy this truck used so I am thinking that rear glass was replaced at some point for some reason and was improperly installed. All and all, we love our Titan.

I ran two F150s to well over 300k the Frontier is great. But the F150 sets the bar for all other light trucks.

The Ranger 4.0 is a turd compared to this engine. Plus only 5 speed, torsion beam front suspension, brutal interior. I originally wanted a Ranger but when I came across the Frontier and realized could get a 4x4 4.0 with 6 speed manual I was sold.

I agree with George!!! "I do not like automatics!" 6 speed manuel with the 4.0 V6 gets the towing job done, handily. I really like how he also customized it to his liking, with high quality upgraded parts, great interview!!!

It's a good thing that you have the manual transmission. There was a big problem with the, automatic transmission, cooling system.

    • @taolang1089
      @taolang1089 5 ปีที่แล้ว

That ain't true man! If you change your Automatic Transmission Fluid Regularly and Have your Cooling System Flush Regularly that issue will be impossible to happen! Unless If you're Neglecting your Nissan Frontier then that issue will definitely come by a surprise

Awesome review! That guy new what he wanted and it fits his every need! I'm impressed with the original clutch with all that towing. The axle replacement is a common problem among Titans and Frontiers of those years.

      @derekgardin1512 2 ปีที่แล้ว

Its easily remedied. There's also a problem with the breather but that's a $40 fix to prevent any problems.

I have a 06 Frontier SE V6 King Cab with the 6 speed manual. It has 1/2 the miles of his but I've had a similar experience. The only issue so far is the driver side window motor died last week. I have the replacement motor and will install it myself. I'm planning to keep this truck 10 more years. Great solid truck.

I think the rear end can be attributed to 60k miles of hard towing for a midsize truck.

Ryan Martinage you call that hard towing?? He was towing all within the frontiers safety limits.

Have had 3 Frontiers starting with a 2001. I was a volunteer firefighter and it was my POV (personally owned vehicle.) It was a 4-wheel drive with a V-6. I added a siren, flashing lights, strobes, fire radio, and 12,000 pound winch with front and back receivers and power. I ran the hell out of that truck for 9 years. It never failed me and helped me save many lives including pulling a car that was wrapped around a utility pole.
I traded it for a 2010 Frontier but opted for the base model. I always regretted not getting 4-wheel drive and the other features. In 2016, I traded it for a fully tricked out Frontier Pro-4X. All three have been excellent trucks!

I bought the 2016 new off the lot June 2016 automatic and love it.Don't put a lot of miles on it.Just hit 20 thousand and not one problem.Hit the gas pedal getting on the highway and my wife yells slow down.Traded in a 2005 Dakota V8 automatic and would get on the highway and would say come on, come on, and nothing would happen. Now my head goes back. What a difference.

I got an SV with almost bald tires and the 4wd took my through a muddy creek. Didnt get stuck. The chain issue is resolved after 2010. You can save your rear end by changing the diff fluid early. The axle vent sucks so moisture accumulates and wears it out.

5600 lbs regularly with a Frontier. I mean can you beat that for 90% of the weekend camping people with a family of 4?

    Purchased a 2018 crew SL auto/4wd.
Regardless of the reviews concerning cramped back seats, my 2 kids
have enough room to sit in back. Walks threw 10 in. of wet snow with ease.
The smaller cabin is no issue, considering the other options were $30,000+
for regular sized trucks which would (as usual) have the trans blow up within 2 years or start on
fire in the parking lot. I have 18 speeds on my bike, I don't need 18 speeds on my truck.
Also last of the MPFI as most everything else is now the carbon choked DI.
Truck has been a blast to drive, so far we are happy with it and it works
for us just fine. We have no reason to drive in the woods or tow 7000 lbs.
If we ever needed an "infosystem", we would simply use my daughters $50 Kindle.
    Great review, thank you.
