This movie is far from perfect and has got serious problems, but I still enjoy it. Godzilla's characterization is great stuff, it's got some good monster acting, and it features one of Yoshio Tsuchiya's finest acting performances. I also want to say Anna Nakagawa was a very talented actress. She was very good in Kiyoshi Kurosawa's crime film Cure (1997).
In some scenes, this shines visually, easily outstripping Returns and Biollante in my opinion. Yet other scenes are some of the hokiest looking things I've ever seen on screen. This was a good call by Toho to bring back a famous enemy of Godzilla and make it work. Heck, they even managed to squeeze in a semi-original monster with Mecha-King-Ghidorah. This isn't my favorite Heisei movie, but it's definitely up there for sure.
This was the first Godzilla I ever saw as a 5 year old. Ever since I've been hooked, but this movie still remains my favorite Godzilla movie of all time.
This is actually my favorite of the Heisei era. Destoroyah makes an extremely close second but this is my favorite for now. This is still my favorite Godzilla design in the entire franchise and this is the 3rd best Ghidorah design in the franchise. The special effects are also some of the best of the Heisei era and the soundtrack is also one of the best in the series and it fits the monsters weight and strength. Now the fights are pretty short but explosive and brutal and the first fight is one of the best of the series. Especially the moment where Godzilla blasts off Ghidorah's middle head off. And we can't forget how awesome Mecha King Ghidorah looks. The human characters and plots are also better than your average Godzilla film. If there are any problems, its that I am not a fan of Ghidorah orgin and the special effects can look kinda bad a few times. These are small problems though and when the film does so much right, you won't even care about the problems. I will give this film a 9.3/10
A little tidbit that you didn’t mention- this movie is what got godzilla films no longer imported to America. The studio saw it as anti American because of the way the scene was handled with the G.I.s in the World War II. That is why we never got to see this or the later films until the popularity of DVDs.
Your take on Godzilla vs King Ghidorah is way more charitable than mine. Between the campier tone, the HUGE step backwards in terms of special effects and direction, the obnoxious nationalism and sugar coating of Japan's WWII military culture, and dusting off a kaiju antagonist that should have stayed in the Showa era, Godzilla vs King Ghidorah marks the point where Toho (once again) steered the series away from a more serious tone and towards to the trashier end of the spectrum, but without going far enough for it to be dumb fun.
looking back at the reason for the futurions wanting to erase godzilla to keep japan from being a super power really find it an awesome in hindsight showing of the heisei series continuity that the countries they mentioned likely weren't ones that were oppressed but enemies trying to knock it down only to be destroyed by godzilla junior protecting them with how he definitely cares for humans having a better relationship with them.(really heartwarming that even if we didn't get to see more of godzilla junior with his new power it hints he was responsible with it helping japan become a super power with his protection.:3)
I am watching through the entire series, the Showa Era have some good movies (like the OG) but a lot of them were hard to get through. Been looking forward to the Heisei Era, I'd heard great things and loved the previous two movies and was highly anticipating this one as King Ghidorah is Godzilla's greatest foe but man, this movie did not do it for me... The plot is an absolute mess, there is some ridiculous moments that would fit the Showa Era better, throughout and i just hate what they did with Godzilla, making him the big bad and Ghidorah the under dog. About the plot, lets go back in time and stop Godzilla from happening, return to the present and some how everyone still know about Godzilla even though he was prevented, then in comes KD, a big threat so lets make Godzilla who from the word go is somehow at the top of his game after literally just being made (why was in still at the bottom of the ocean if he didn't exist??) and kills KD with ease... THEN Godzilla is the big threat so yeah, lets bring back KD to stop him... WTF is going on??? 🤣🤦♂️ So looking forward to MechaGhidorah but man, didnt like what they did with this movie at all, huge disappointment. Just not what i was expecting. Need a 2nd viewing
I believe this may have been the first Japanese Godzilla movie I ever saw. Honestly, I don't remember much, I don't even exactly remember how old I was, but I do remember King Ghidora and Mecha King Ghidora, and while I still haven't seen a ton of Kaiju movies, he's certainly my favorite monster of them all. Three heads, flies, shoots lightning stuff, he's awesome.
As cool as Mecha King Ghidorah looks, he has a really glaring weakspot that is easy to hit. The futurians feel like villains from a James Bond movie. Also, it was really gut-wrenching seeing the Godzillasaurus being bombarded by the ship and screaming in pain.
The whole time travel conundrum in this film nigh single handedly ravaged the rest of the heisei timeline. Sure some good scenes came from the:going back in time, but the ones that did could have been accomplished with a flashback or two. Lovely king ghidorah design though he’s nerfed the first fight was done very well. And though mechakingghidorah was similarly awesome the limitations of this suit make for one of the lesser fights of the series in my opinion. Despite all its flaws I do enjoy it greatly for how goofy it can be as well as a few of the serious moments.
...The problem I always had with this film is I feel like it's dipping its toes a bit too deeply into the well of problematic Japanese ultranationalism? But I guess I should try it again and see if I can turn off the part of my brain that can't help but read into that.
i didn't really find the time travel that hard to see(definitely complicated and could've explained things like there being 2 godzillasaurus: the heisei and the one that became 1954.) but did get confused thinking they erased the heisei godzilla instead of just putting him away from the blast radius. that aside i love this movie with the focus on godzilla's relationship with humanity showing the heisei godzilla feeling betrayed when left behind as a surprisingly docile dinosaur(was surprised he just knocked trees onto the u.s army protecting the soldiers instead of outright eating them.) and angered by the attacks that nearly killed him(his attack on tokyo after defeating ghidorah is pretty much him taking his anger out on tokyo for deserting him/that hesitation when he kills shindo still gets me with him giving a painless death or humanity showing when almost too blinded with rage.) ,enjoyed the main characters especially emi(wish she appeared again) & m 11(basically the closest to the terminator in a godzilla movie.:3)and while not a fan of the dorats do like mecha king ghidorah(would love if he came back in monsterverse using mechagodzilla/kevin's head.).
I remember one of the major things I noticed was that the people in present still remembered Godzilla after he was erased from time, like what? The only people that should remember are the time travelers XD O well, I still have mad love for the movie, it is one of the favourites
It's a little confusing, but the reason why everyone remembered Godzilla (and why the G-Force division of the army was around), was because everything *still* happened. The Japanese and the Futurians both *thought* that because of the way time travel worked, that the Godzillasaurus being moved from that spot to another would mean he'd never be irradiated, and upon seeing Ghidorah, they all thought he was their new kaiju problem; they neglected the hubris of humanity, as nuclear bomb tests were still being done in multiple areas. Godzilla still becomes Godzilla but his transformation is years later, and he's irradiated with a stronger dose of nuclear radiation that made him stronger and larger. The 1984 incident and Godzilla's fight with Biollante still happened (which is why Biollante is mentioned in the Spacegodzilla film), and Godzilla recovered to the ocean to heal up after that fight. The Japanese, thinking that he still wasn't Godzilla due to the hijinks of time travel, sent that nuclear sub, which inadvertently made him even *stronger,* as because he still hadn't reappeared on the surface yet, they wrongfully assumed he wasn't Godzilla yet. The twist was, that he *was* already Godzilla when they sent the sub, which showed that no matter what they did with the Godzillasaurus, he was destined to become Godzilla. And of course, this Godzilla wasn't even the first 1954 Godzilla who originally attacked Japan, so they still would have remembered a Godzilla existed in some way.
Notice you didn't mention the odd Easter egg in this film . The scene the military officers first witnessing the flying saucer like time machine passing over them landing ,then seeing their soldiers getting chased off the island by the proto GODZILLA, and again seeing the machine flying away ,one of the officers said to the other Something like '' spacemen, dinosaurs you'll have quite the story to tell your grandsons about LT SPIELBERG . '' in other words the inspirations for two of Steven Spielberg biggest cinema hits came from his grandfather remembrances. KAIJU MONSTERS FAN FOREVER!!!🙂🙂🙂
I pretty much always hate time travel in any film because it often leads to plot holes or too many plot headaches. That's one of the sticking points about this one for me......and I am aware that there is a video that fully and thoroughly explains exactly what happens with the time travel in this film....I still don't care for it. I wish they had gone with another alien plot-line. But still, this was the film that determined the switch into the 'very colorful laser light show' battles of the 90s Heisei films...and those are always visually engaging to watch.
Their is another video on youtube by Wikizilla explaining the time travel plot. It actually makes sense after watching that video. They supposedly never actually get rid of Godzilla after all. Which has something to do with there being two Godzilla's I believe. I can't remember. I'll have to go watch it again. lol. But yeah the only thing I didn't like about this movie were the cheesy effects surrounding some of M11's action scenes, and the stiff Ghidorah prop. lol.
Sure the plot is convoluted but so is practically every sci-fi story dealing with time travel. Otherwise G vs KG is arguably the highpoint of the Heisei series and among the most multilayered kaiju eiga.
This Movie Has Got to Be My Number 1 All-Time Favourite Godzilla Movie My Favourite Character in This Film Might Be M11, But it's Actually Emmy Kano, I'd Leave M11 At #2 With Emmy Kano At #1 I'd Say M11 is The Goku of The Movie
Shindo got the worst death of ANYONE in any of the films. Atomic Breath point blank as he looked straight into the proverbial soul of the Big G. No one, person or monster, got it as bad as he did. Also, this is the movie with Major Speilberg.
*EDIT*--Come to think of it, I might enjoy this film more if I had a copy without the awful American voiceovers, that's probably the worst thing about it. Probably my least favored film in the series, the time travel and goofy androids really ruined it for me. I do love the origin story for Godzilla and that entire plot was beautiful but the fantastical plot just dragged on and got weirder. When King Ghidorah finally shows up, then the film gets better, ignoring the comical Android fight on the UFO the rest of the film is very enjoyable. Mecha-King Ghidorah was a great addition and really what the film needed as just having a normal G vs KG had been done before so it was refreshing.
Am I missing something? I was so excited to see this movie for the first time recently because of all of the hype but I just couldn't enjoy it. It's not that I don't understand the time travel stuff or just don't like heavy Sci-fi, as a matter of fact that's my favorite genre. I just couldn't understand why the main characters specifically were chosen for the mission, or why the Japanese woman went along with the deception despite clearly disagreeing with it. I also did not like the incest vibes I got at the very end or how weak Mecha King Ghidorah was. I should clarify that I loved the Kaiju stuff, special effects, and had to watch the English Dub. But I don't think the original Japanese version will magically fix all of the plot issues I have with it. I saw Godzilla vs Mothra right after and it was SO much better. Love Battra.
@Up From The Depths Can you or anyone else here tell me what the alleged time travel plot holes are? I honestly don't know what they could be. All I do know is that 1) they said that 2 of the same person couldn't be in the same place at the same time w/out creating a time paradox (which they didn't do AFAICT), 2) they went back to 1944 to teleport Godzillasaurus & drop off the Dorats, leading to the disappearance of the old Godzilla & appearance of KG in 1992, & 3) after the new Godzilla beat up KG in 1992, they went to 2204 to fix up KG & bring Mecha KG to 1992. What am I missing?
Remember when the futurians told the Government & main characters their plan? After teleporting Godzillasaurus & dropping off the Dorats in 1944, they went to the time in 1992 after they had told said characters their plan. It's similar to when Superman was accidentaly sent to an apocalyptic future. When Savage sent Superman back to stop the apocalypse-causing problem, Savage clearly remembered what happened even after the future changed accordingly ("Thank you, my friend"): th-cam.com/video/UraRLx8u1zs/w-d-xo.html
@@gerardo9661 wasnt it that they thought the godzillasaurus was the 54 godzilla and put him in the bottom of the ocean to kill him, then the 54 godzilla came and went and it was revealed that the godzillasaurus was actually the heisei godzilla mutated by castle bravo so i guess it was destined for the futurians to create the 2nd godzilla
PS I find find it very odd I never notice all the pro imperial Japan and anti American propaganda within the film that Omni viewer pointed out when watching this. Not sure how to discuss all that but it probably should be brought up.
I was really disappointed by this movie, especially when compared against Godzilla 1985, Godzilla vs Biollante, Godzilla vs mechagodzilla II, and Godzilla vs Destoroyah. These other Heisei films are just so much better
My problem with this film is ghidorah. Nice design. But his origins are just....no and he is weak asf in this film. Even his mecha version is weak. In the showa films it took 3 monsters to even slightly defeat him and 4 monsters to kill him to show how powerful he is. That isn't here. Ghidorah only puts up a small challenge before being blasted with a nuclear pulse and getting his head and wing blown up. And mecha ghidorah with still vurable as the previous ghidorah and with the metal armor will not help because godzilla atomic breath burns metal so the made him more vulnerable and I really don't think the middle head beam they created could be as powerful as the anti gravity beams and he is easily defeated by being blasted in the chest. What a disappointment
A lot of the reason why Ghidorah is weaker is because he becomes Ghidorah in 1954, whereas pushing back Godzilla's transformation inadvertently made him stronger than he was before. Had Ghidorah's birth been later on, he'd have defeated Godzilla had they left the Godzillasaurus in place. Also, Mecha-King Ghidorah was really just a Hail Mary play at that point. His main job was to get Godzilla away from Japan, and in that, he succeeded.
I'm not a fan of this hot garbage. However the Kaiju stuff is cool and the first battle between Godzilla and King Ghidorah is one of my favorite fights from the franchise, but I hate this overrated garbage. 2/10

I will give this film a 9.3/10
This was probably one of my top 3 fav Godzilla movies growing up
To this day this is my favourite Godzilla movie. Only surpassed by the Heisei Gamera Trilogy.
Essentially, the time travel is just them transporting a random godzillasouras to another island, meaning they didn't actually do anything at all.
He was teleported to the bottom of the Bering Sea.
The time Lords forgot heiseo Godzilla and the original godzilla are two different monsters
A little tidbit that you didn’t mention- this movie is what got godzilla films no longer imported to America. The studio saw it as anti American because of the way the scene was handled with the G.I.s in the World War II. That is why we never got to see this or the later films until the popularity of DVDs.
Godzilla is actually never erased from history in this film. It can be explained on Wikizilla's TH-cam channel.
Everything you wrote here is exactly what I thought of this one.
Im still making my way through the films, but youre so right
How much I love that Ghidorah theme.
Actually the people from the future moved the Godzillasaurus to somewhere else. Which they're responsible for creating the 1985 Godzilla .
looking back at the reason for the futurions wanting to erase godzilla to keep japan from being a super power really find it an awesome in hindsight showing of the heisei series continuity that the countries they mentioned likely weren't ones that were oppressed but enemies trying to knock it down only to be destroyed by godzilla junior protecting them with how he definitely cares for humans having a better relationship with them.(really heartwarming that even if we didn't get to see more of godzilla junior with his new power it hints he was responsible with it helping japan become a super power with his protection.:3)
So looking forward to MechaGhidorah but man, didnt like what they did with this movie at all, huge disappointment. Just not what i was expecting. Need a 2nd viewing
I adore this film. Easily my favorite Godzilla film. Great review.
I remember the first time I saw this movie on VHS in the early 00s like wow this movie was amazing and changed my life
Few movie monsters have ever had as complicated a role as Godzilla, and that's what makes him great :)
Proud to say, my first g movie.
This was my very first Godzilla movie
The whole time travel conundrum in this film nigh single handedly ravaged the rest of the heisei timeline. Sure some good scenes came from the:going back in time, but the ones that did could have been accomplished with a flashback or two. Lovely king ghidorah design though he’s nerfed the first fight was done very well. And though mechakingghidorah was similarly awesome the limitations of this suit make for one of the lesser fights of the series in my opinion. Despite all its flaws I do enjoy it greatly for how goofy it can be as well as a few of the serious moments.
This is one of the first Godzilla movies I ever saw. 😃
I loved watching the final battle between him and King Ghidorah. Just a lot of fun. 👍
Let's not forget Major Spielberg
...The problem I always had with this film is I feel like it's dipping its toes a bit too deeply into the well of problematic Japanese ultranationalism? But I guess I should try it again and see if I can turn off the part of my brain that can't help but read into that.
Nah, I get the same vibe off it. Betting on the inevitable "uGh, iT'S NoT pRobLemAtiC, yOu WeStErnErs aNd YoUr wOkE SEnsiBiLiTiEs" response.
Yeah the whole "Japan will start buying countries" part of the plot was silly. I just took it as a campy reason but I was young when i first saw it.
This is the only Heisei era film I've ever seen, and I really want to see the others. Shame though we can't seem to get the DVDs over here.
This one is in my top 5 fav Godzilla movies!
Hey man whats ur top 5 g movies this is top 3 for me
Interesting thing the time travellers actually created the heisei Godzilla
i didn't really find the time travel that hard to see(definitely complicated and could've explained things like there being 2 godzillasaurus: the heisei and the one that became 1954.) but did get confused thinking they erased the heisei godzilla instead of just putting him away from the blast radius.
that aside i love this movie with the focus on godzilla's relationship with humanity showing the heisei godzilla feeling betrayed when left behind as a surprisingly docile dinosaur(was surprised he just knocked trees onto the u.s army protecting the soldiers instead of outright eating them.) and angered by the attacks that nearly killed him(his attack on tokyo after defeating ghidorah is pretty much him taking his anger out on tokyo for deserting him/that hesitation when he kills shindo still gets me with him giving a painless death or humanity showing when almost too blinded with rage.) ,enjoyed the main characters especially emi(wish she appeared again) & m 11(basically the closest to the terminator in a godzilla movie.:3)and while not a fan of the dorats do like mecha king ghidorah(would love if he came back in monsterverse using mechagodzilla/kevin's head.).
If Rhodey name-dropped this time travel movie in Avengers: Endgame, I would've lost my mind.
The one is in my top 5 fav Godzilla movies!!
I remember one of the major things I noticed was that the people in present still remembered Godzilla after he was erased from time, like what? The only people that should remember are the time travelers XD
O well, I still have mad love for the movie, it is one of the favourites
The scene the military officers first witnessing the flying saucer like time machine passing over them landing ,then seeing their soldiers getting chased off the island by the proto GODZILLA, and again seeing the machine flying away ,one of the officers said to the other
Something like '' spacemen, dinosaurs you'll have quite the story to tell your grandsons about LT SPIELBERG . ''
in other words the inspirations for two of Steven Spielberg biggest cinema hits came from his grandfather remembrances.
KAIJU MONSTERS FAN FOREVER!!!🙂🙂🙂
Does the Japanese Blu-ray of this movie have sub titles?
My personal favorite.
I love this one. It is a wild ride.
The bits about radiation were just insulting tho.
A classic game of bad vs worse!
God(zilla) I love this era and it's more somber and downright sad tone and themes
This is my favourite heise Godzilla suit
I pretty much always hate time travel in any film because it often leads to plot holes or too many plot headaches. That's one of the sticking points about this one for me......and I am aware that there is a video that fully and thoroughly explains exactly what happens with the time travel in this film....I still don't care for it.
I wish they had gone with another alien plot-line. But still, this was the film that determined the switch into the 'very colorful laser light show' battles of the 90s Heisei films...and those are always visually engaging to watch.
King kong was orginaly gonna be in this movie insted of King gidorah
Their is another video on youtube by Wikizilla explaining the time travel plot. It actually makes sense after watching that video. They supposedly never actually get rid of Godzilla after all. Which has something to do with there being two Godzilla's I believe. I can't remember. I'll have to go watch it again. lol. But yeah the only thing I didn't like about this movie were the cheesy effects surrounding some of M11's action scenes, and the stiff Ghidorah prop. lol.
Godzilla vs biolanti is so hard find on dvd and they say it was a fail.
Sure the plot is convoluted but so is practically every sci-fi story dealing with time travel. Otherwise G vs KG is arguably the highpoint of the Heisei series and among the most multilayered kaiju eiga.
The best heisie Godzilla movie
Shame the movie is hot ass. But that's what usually happens when you have time travel with little to no rules.
so its as good as KoTM?
This Movie Has Got to Be My Number 1 All-Time Favourite Godzilla Movie
My Favourite Character in This Film Might Be M11, But it's Actually Emmy Kano, I'd Leave M11 At #2 With Emmy Kano At #1
I'd Say M11 is The Goku of The Movie
MY FAVORITE G SUIT.
Shindo got the worst death of ANYONE in any of the films. Atomic Breath point blank as he looked straight into the proverbial soul of the Big G. No one, person or monster, got it as bad as he did.
Also, this is the movie with Major Speilberg.
I just want to know how do you get away with showing footage from the films?
If they stopped Godzilla's "birth" in 1944 why the people of 1992 knew he was missing?
I hate the plot, I love the fights, I watch for the fights, I just found it boring, but the action is amazing
I was really disappointed by this movie, especially when compared against Godzilla 1985, Godzilla vs Biollante, Godzilla vs mechagodzilla II, and Godzilla vs Destoroyah. These other Heisei films are just so much better
What about the Japanese imperialist overtones?
Must watch or I’m sus
So, good 90s sfx, good music, good performances, awful writing. Fair review.
I felt this movie did a much better job with time travel than avengers endgame did!
The android is a terminator rip off
Yeah, it was just meant to be an homage. They also have a Diehard reference to the film, along with the Spielberg reference.
Omni Viewer used this video to talk about how Japan hasn't gotten over WW2, and secretly wishes to revive the Japanese empire.
The politics keep me away from this one
The Shindo/Godzilla connection and scenes are THE only reason to watch this mess of a film imo.
I for one, will never like the backstory depicted in this movie.
I'm not a fan of this hot garbage. However the Kaiju stuff is cool and the first battle between Godzilla and King Ghidorah is one of my favorite fights from the franchise, but I hate this overrated garbage. 2/10
Unpopular opinion: Most of the English dubbing was terrible.
That's a popular opinion lmao
😒 Never cared for this moves origin nonsense of Godzilla and Ghidorah. 😑
