Revisiting this for the first time in years made me realize why this was my favorite Godzilla movie as a kid. It has it all. Hope you guys and gals enjoy the review!
This was the first Godzilla movie I ever saw! What an amazing way to spark a love for the franchise. When I was 3 or 4 I saw the big Godzilla final wars Bandai figure at toys r us. I loved dinosaurs and thought it looked so cool. My parents brought me home and showed me this movie, then we went and got my toy haha. 100% a core memory for me and this will always be near the top of my list.
I've always loved this film. It gave Godzilla more character that we missed in the prior entry. You noticed little things about Godzilla, like how doesn't try to attack MG when they first cross paths and only attacks once MG does.
Excellent review, this is my favorite Godzilla film of all time! I love it to death! It's highly entertaining and has a very compelling story. Watching this review I was like "Finally, someone who gets it!" You've earned my subscription.
Oh yeah, by a mile. Minilla was a whiny, ugly little turd that made donkey noises constantly. Junior actually looks like his father, can hold his own in a fight (at least by Godzilla vs Destroyah), and is actually adorable. Plus he actually makes cute noises, not high-pitched screeching that makes your ears bleed.
Yeah I like Godzilla Jr so much. Not Baby or Little but Jr from Destroyah. It sounds like in an earlier draft of Son of Godzilla Minya seemed to actually scare some of cast and might have been more fearsome. So I can't help but picture something looking a little more like Jr.
Kizumi has to be one of my favorites among the humans in these movies. He played the goofy character well while not making him seem stupid or incompetent. And I loved the turnaround from Mecha Godzilla being the war engine of an invasion force to being Japan's first real bid to face Godzilla on equal footing. And the idea that this quantum leap in technology came about by reverse engineering 24th century tech makes sense. It's much easier to make something once you figure out how it was made. Plus the continued use of synthetic diamonds in anti-G measures is nice through line the Heisei movies.
Best movie in the whole series for me. Great action, outstanding special effects, simple but memorable story, great characters, and an amazing score. Oh yeah and I’m a little biased towards my favorite Kaiju, the Heisei Mechagodzilla.
I am a lifelong G-Fan and this one always gets me with those broad strokes of wisdom. I can show this one to people who claim they would never watch a Godzilla movie. Sho nuff, when it gets to the scene where Baby gets left behind, said people end up feeling guilty they had to choke back a tear. All three Okawara G-films are high water marks for the entire G-film series.
It took me a long time to watch this one, for the longest time I wasn't sure if it would be worth watching because MG looked weird and I was afraid Rodan was going to be an afterthought and just a filler. But when I finally watched it I was relieved to see I was wrong and wished I watched it sooner, the drama was perfect and the fights were beautifully done, each Kaiju was given the utmost respect
Ah yes, my all time favorite Godzilla movie. Even after so many years, I can't bring myself to criticize it. The monsters, the characters, the pacing, the mechas, the music, everything is just so well done and entertaining that I physically cannot find a single thing about this movie that I don't like. It's got all five stars from me and if anyone disagrees with me I will fight them.
I love this movie. It has the best Mechagodzilla in my opinion, good monster scenes, beautiful score... pretty much anything good about the Heisei series is here. Great movie, 9/10.
Definitely my 3rd or 4th favorite in the Heisei series. I absolutely adore Baby Godzilla and how he actually resembles his father (unlike Minilla), and this incarnation of Rodan has won my heart. Yes, he's small and he got the short-end of the stick even with his Fire form, but he never stopped fighting to protect his little brother (Baby), even against impossible odds. He was the underdog of this film.
This was my 2nd most watched Godzilla movie growing up, next to "Godzilla vs. King Ghidorah." My parents taped it off the TV for me when it aired on the SciFi Channel (Now called "Syfy") and I watched it ALL the time! Mostly because it was one of the very few Godzilla movies I had on video at the time. This, and the 1956 version of "Godzilla, King of the Monsters", were the only two Godzilla movies I had on VHS as a kid (Both taped off the TV). It wasn't until recent years when I finally bought all of my favorite Godzilla movies on DVD off eBay, following the hype of "Godzilla 2014."
While Godzilla 1998 will remain as my favorite Godzilla movie, super Mechagodzilla is 2nd place on my list of favorite kaiju. Godzilla 1998 and super Mechagodzilla are my favorites because of their 90s feel, you can tell these were made in the 90s just by looking at them.
The U.N.G.C.C. (United Nations Godzilla Countermeasure Center) recovers the remains of Mecha-King Ghidorah and construct Mechagodzilla as a countermeasure against Godzilla. Meanwhile, a giant egg is discovered along with a new monster called Rodan. The egg is soon found to be none other than an infant Godzillasaurus.
0:07 lol the scale of the water around Godzilla in these old movies really always gave away his actual scale, which is normal human-sized 😂. Thats where a CGi Godzilla has the edge.
I just rewatched movie for the first time in many, many years and I loved it. And I mean LOVED IT! It’s in my top 10 of the franchise. Such a good, epic and fun movie!
What I loved about this movie was the fact Akria Ikfube brought back my favorite godzilla theme, the Mothra Vs Godzilla 1964 godzilla theme. Minus a few twists, I always loved that fact.
I have this movie, along with all of the millennium Godzilla movies. Godzilla vs Mechagodzilla 2 was pretty good, but not as good as the 1974 Version, wish the pacing was better, and I wish it had more substance to what it was trying to achieve. Despite that it was still a worthy entry to the heisei franchise. Give it a 6.8/10
The fight between Godzilla and Rodan is one of the best of the heisei series, it was more physical than the other heisei movies where it's all laser beams and explosions
As much as I enjoyed G84, Biollante, King Ghidorah, & Destoroyah as a kid, this was my favorite Godzilla movie from the Heisei series. It may not be in my Top 5, but it's most definitely in my Top 10.
A 4-star rating means it's excellent, which is what a near perfect film is. 5 star films are special. I think he's given out only four 5 star ratings, and those films are far better than this one (the second and third Gamera films, the 1954 Godzilla, and Shin Godzilla).
This and Godzilla Against Mechagodzilla are the first Japanese Godzilla movies I’ve ever seen as a kid and it’s honestly insane on how much nostalgic value they hold for me
Through the years, this Rodan has really grown on me. I still prefer the 1956 one as far as the design goes, but the character depiction regarding its personality is really well done in this one. He’s a rogue, but a rogue with a heart who ends up (SPOILER ALERT) being the one who makes the ultimate sacrifice.
Easily in my Top 5 list of best Godzilla movies. The plot is tightly woven, the kaiju action is superb, and Baby Godzilla actually works as a character.
In regards to Miki suddenly having a change in character regarding Godzilla, they did a pretty good job building it up throughout the Heisei series. Her psychic bond with Godzilla and later Godzilla Junior makes her empathize with Godzilla, as she sees the tragedy within his origin and she understands why he is the way he is. They had a few moments in Godzilla vs King Ghidorah and Godzilla vs Mothra where you can see her showing concern for Godzilla's well-being, and that built up to being a pivotal plot point in this film.
Actually, U can look at her 1st confrontation with Godzilla in Godzilla vs. Biollante, as the point where start to emphasize with Godzilla, the only thing is she just never notices those feelings. Up til G vs. MechaG 2, they were subconscious, and she never realized them. It wasn't til this film when she met BabyG that she finally noticed and confronted those feelings.
This is the best of the "vs films" for me honestly. The monsters look great, the story flows well, and the human characters felt more competent and likable than most entries this time around and each served a purpose. Their loss in the first fight was a loss yes, but showed where they needed to improve that could only have been determined after a fight with Godzilla, and the second they won fair and square but just didn't count on Rodan giving his essence. Add that to a good Baby Godzilla and some great action scenes and you've got a great entry.
My PERSONAL favorite Godzilla movie!! Not the best overall, that belongs to Gojira (1954). But this movie is everything to me! The kaiju, the soundtrack, the story, everything about this movie I love! Every time MechaGodzilla turns into Super MechaGodzilla gives me chills every time!
This version of Mechagodzilla could be used for so many bodybuilding memes. "Never skipped leg day" or "bro do you even lift?" immediately come to mind.
But in Godzilla Vs. Mechagodzilla 2, he's - somehow - back! He has slimmed down shoulders and slimmer legs. He's also raising a blue-toned baby Godzilla. This time he's defeated when his butt-brain is destroyed, but he's easily revitalized just moments later.
This one is a complete GEM! The epic Rodan fight, Godzilla turning the tables on MG, Godzilla almost loosing in the end.... it's amazing and the best of the era IMO. It kinda borderlines on Kaiju torture-pron with some of epic damage done by MG, MG is more like a GIGANTIC Super X 2 and they feed baby godzilla a hamburger after saying he's a vegetarian..... but I love it anyways! Please if you get turned of by others of this era, still gives this one a watch!
It's so damn good! Wataru Mimura's script delivers a more nuanced, empathetic take on Godzilla, the story is compelling with inventive set-pieces and engaging characters. Plus Megumi Okada enjoys arguably her finest hour. Sure the original Mecha-G remains the superior design, but Baby Godzilla is a great character. All in all a first rate kaiju eiga.
This was my first Heisei Godzilla film. One of my favourites. Mechagodzilla's design never really bothered me. He's not supposed to look menacing. What bothered me was the fact that this Mechagodzilla was purely range attack and had zero melee abilities. Showa Mechagodzilla, while having quite an arsenal, could still hold his own in a melee fight. I guess Heisei Mechagodzilla represents the Heisei era and it's beam spamming that it's known for.
I think rodans stiff look when he is flying is realistic, the largest birds can fly with out flapping their wings for hours, it's not a stretch that rodan doesn't need to flap his wings very much
Best Akira Ifukube soundtrack ever!!!!!!!!!! I gotta say that this movie displayed the most complex emotion from the kaijus. I actually felt for more then just one for the first time, especially Baby Godzilla. My biggest issue with this movie is how they did Rodan dirty! Damn he was like useless, even with that power upgrade. Must disagree with you about this Rodan's design. While better then the Rodan from the Godzilla movies it's still no where as good as the costume from the 50's
I watched this on VHS, loved on the opening theme, and this is the movie that solidified my belief that the captain of the Super X in any Heisei Godzilla film is almost always the best character. As I remember.though, Rodan's name was pronounced "Ra-dan" for some reason, and the title made me think there was a previous film in this series with Mechagodzilla. But, yes, I did mostly enjoy it.
There's the 50th anniversary DVDs (US release) and the Heisei DVD collection (Australian release). Both of those have dual audio! I actually quite like the dubbed versions but even I acknowledge they aren't exactly award-winning.
This movie is amazing, especially with all the monster action. And Godzilla is literally seconds from death when he gets revived by Rodan. Which I couldn't believe when I first saw it. Though I understood later that they had actually planned to kill Godzilla with Mechagodzilla when they first came up with the film, only to change their minds and save Godzilla's death for later. This movie is basically 5 stars in my book. Like 4.8 stars. lol. I think you should have went with half stars in your reviews at least. Because if it is basically a "perfect Godzilla film" then how could it not get 5 stars in your rating system? lol.
a decent movie.. too bad they completely screwed up Rodan both by his new shrunken size and by the stupidly stiff puppet.. ..other major problem is there is no clear villain in the story...
I guess altough Rodan loved him, he knew he really wasn't baby G's brother and that Godzilla would be a better caretaker for him. Also probably wanted the big G to kick some mecha-ass for payback.
I didn't like that either. I think that happened because this movie was originally supposed to end with Godzilla dying, but Toho decided to save that for a later film so then they had to come up with a way to save Godzilla. I'm no expert on this series, but I kind of thought only Mothra could do that sort of thing when she died, since she's mystical.
Actually, all things considered, you'd really be able to just jump from this film to Vs Destroyah without losing much, if anything. I can't think of a single plot point in Vs SpaceGodzilla that is really carried over into Vs Destroyah, and as far as the Heisei era is concerned, that's a marked improvement.
I remember this being one of the first Heisei movies I've ever seen in full and despite some flaws, I still think that this is a solid Godzilla movie that I like to rewatch from time to time. Too bad a certain pretentious person by the name of Blunova prefers to mercilessly rip this movie (Along with Godzilla vs Destoroyah and Godzilla KOTM) to shreds without remorse. But to each their own I guess
This movie was really alright in my opinion. The design of MechaGodzilla in this film is my least favorite of the 3 (4 if you count the anime trilogy) The best part were the monster fights and the interactions with Baby Godzilla and the humans. 7/10
Love the Hesei series. I prefer to watch it in abridged form though. 85/RoG->vs.Biollantee->vs.King Ghidorah->vs.MechaGodzilla2->vs.Destoroyah. You can skip Mothra and Space Godzilla and not really miss much. Fine movies but Godzilla’s really a side character in vs.Mothra. SpaceGodzilla, while having a cool design, just seems like filler.
Personally, I think you and many others are too harsh on Millennium and Reiwa entries and way too soft on Heisei. I went in wanting Heisei to be my favorite, but aside from Godzilla 1984, they all greatly disappointed and bored me to tears. And I like bad Godzilla movies. I had a lot of fun with Godzilla vs Megalon and the rest of th Showa series. I even love 1998 for what it is. But the Heisei series? Aside from the very impressive special effects, the monster action and human stories just left me feeling nothing by the time the movie was over. The human characters are typically below average and not likeable or compelling in any way, and the fight scenes have no energy or really anything to them. They get repetitive really fast. The Heisei era to me just felt too safe and too formulaic most of the time, and when they tried doing new and interesting things like Biollante and Destoroyah, it just never left an impression on me. You want a good Heisei series? Watch Gamera. It's truly some of the best in the genre. These movies just feel really weird to watch. Because they take the premise really seriously most of the time, to the point of it becoming boring and uninspired, but at the same time they're goofy as fuck, mainly with the human stories. But it's never in a fun B-movie way, because they're still trying to take it seriously. That's why the humans really suffer. The Showa era, on the surface is much whackier, with pretty dopey looking suits. And that's true for some of them. But movies like Mothra vs Godzilla, Ghidorah the Three Headed Monster, Destroy All Monsters, Godzilla vs Hedorah, Godzilla vs Mechagodzilla, and Terror of Mechagodzilla all tell very serious and very engaging human stories, but have a fun energy with it. Even less serious movies like King Kong vs Godzilla and Invasion of Astro-Monster still take it seriously and still have a fun time. I also don't know what it is about the old miniatures but seeing them get destroyed just looks better to me than the Heisei destruction. Maybe it's the actual crushing and crumbling rather than flashy explosions? I don't hate Heisei, I really want to love it, but I don't and just can't help but notice how unfairly the fanbase treats it compared to others.
in all seriousness how is the heisei movies worse than something like the reiwa series? those movies did the worst aspects of the heisei era and did them much worse! like the slow and immobile kaijus, them being overpowered and consistently beam spamming.@@dylanemery9855
Personally, i found Rodan to be a big puppet. Watch the original Rodan movie with the twins...or ghe mates... Anyway, THIS rodan could not compare in all flight scenes The original always looked best. This one didnt look natural when landing and it was obvious his strings were blurred out in various scenes. As for Mecha-Godzilla, he looked great. Obviously his 'musculature' was inspired by ROBOCOP...‼️ And im ok with that😊. As for
Surprised you didn't give this one five stars. I guess its highly-unoriginal title must have detracted from it (as it is by no means a sequel to Godzilla vs. Mechagodzilla).
You’re far to biased on this film, Rodan is reduced to nothing but a stiff prop and the farthest thing from being “natural”. I’d say without a doubt, between this and Spacegodzilla, I don’t know what’s the worst of the Heisei series.
A good movie whit Godzilla getting development but it has things I did not like. Meachgodzila look stupid nor do I like the idea of him becoming a good guy. Most of all what they did to rodan was unforgiving. They turn him into a loser. He was nothing like the rouge badass from the showa era. It prove modern-day toho did not care much for rodan yet would use him whenever the hell they wanted to use him.
This movie make a Godzilla look fatIn certain angles I didn’t like this one that much like the first couple of lines before it but it was still a good casual found just didn’t like Godzilla being too fat in this one
Rodan looks bad and so fake in this movie. The old movies were able to show so much character and now looks a stiff puppet. I don't understand why they made him like this when even in 1956 they had him in a suit.
I never I understood why this movie is held in such high regard. Its boring. The rodan and mechagodzilla redesigns are stiff and lifeless. Mechagodzilla can barely move. The only good thing about it was baby godzilla. I don't understand how these movies looked so bad after Godzilla vs Biollante.
@@matthewgramz3648 well I'm not a fan of godzilla king of the monsters, and the monsters in this movie were not recycled ideas, unless you expect them to create a new monster each movie, most people want to see the monsters updated and have different and cool powers. And I don't think it looked that bad.
@@GSTE_ explain how Rodan 1956 looked more realistic than Rodan 1993. In almost 40 years they couldn't make a more convincing creature? It's a boring lazy movie. It's immobile statues firing beams at each other. It's pretty bad. Godzilla vs Biollante has better visual effects than every movie that came after it until Shin.
@@matthewgramz3648 godzilla vs biollante didn't really have better visual effects, all it was, was biollante shooting vines at godzilla and then godzilla spams his atomic breath and kills biollante, while other movies have godzilla picking up monsters, hitting them, or hitting them with his tail as well as shooting a special atomic breath or new power. And I will say that rodan is pretty stiff, but he was used pretty well in the movie even if he was stiff, his fight with godzilla in the beginning and his fight with mechagodzilla at the end. And rodan in the original wasn't really that convincing either, but he was less stiff, so in mobility he is better, but his design does not look as realistic as heisei rodan. And how is the movie lazy besides not having rodan be less stiff, they have godzilla and mechagodzilla fighting and have lots of things happening in the fights. And they don't just stand there and shoot beams, godzilla did do hand to hand combat a couple of times, and the beams look pretty cool as well as the explosions and stuff.
Revisiting this for the first time in years made me realize why this was my favorite Godzilla movie as a kid. It has it all. Hope you guys and gals enjoy the review!
Honestly, my favorite Godzilla film is GXMG. But GMK is pretty good too. This will be the next Godzilla film I will see.
This is my favorite movie of all time

Yeah, he was very expressive in this film, like during the ending when his son returned to him and he smiled.
This film was incredible, I loved it!! Baby Godzilla tied up my heartstrings in all kinds of knots 💗

This is the pinnacle of humanity and is the best movie of all time
Rodan or Fire Rodan was way smaller. Rodan are supposed to be same size as Godzilla like from showa series and final wars Rodan
this rodan is probably very young, judging by the status of the egg
Yes, but on the other side i think it gave him a nice sense of agility
Is my favorite Heisei movie.
Me too! :)
Mine too
This one is a complete GEM!
This boi made a review on EVERY SINGLE GODDAMN MOVIE THIS MAN NEEDS METTAL
I wish they changed the title because technically Terror of Mechagodzilla is the second time they fought.
My favorite Godzilla movie of all time
My FAVORITE Godzilla movie!
One of my fav Godzilla movies!
The original Rodan was good, but I've never been very fond of the way he looked from Ghidorah the Three Headed Monster onward.
@@UpFromTheDepths88 we are in agreement on that.
I am yet to see one of Rodan´s movies, so this might be a good one to begin with.
The first Rodan movie is the best, mostly because of a twist that's not repeated in any of his other appearances.
As weak rodan was in this movie and boy is he weak. This movie is still a blast to watch.
Weak but maaaaannnnn he was a bro.
Best Film of this series
Oh, thats me?
I watched this on VHS, loved on the opening theme, and this is the movie that solidified my belief that the captain of the Super X in any Heisei Godzilla film is almost always the best character. As I remember.though, Rodan's name was pronounced "Ra-dan" for some reason, and the title made me think there was a previous film in this series with Mechagodzilla. But, yes, I did mostly enjoy it.
I mean, isn't that how his name is pronounced in Japanese?
@@channelwithout Yeah, he's "Radon" in Japan since they took it from the word "pteranodon" - pteranodon = pteRAnoDON = Radon.
This is my favorite Heisei Godzilla film
My very first godzilla movie :D
Fire Rodan was badass!
How do I get my hands on the original Japanese versions of the Heisei godzilla movies?
Because if it is basically a "perfect Godzilla film" then how could it not get 5 stars in your rating system? lol.
Only thing I would prefer is that mechagodzilla to stand a chance against Godzilla in a fist fight and have a more intimidating face
Man this one was so good!
a decent movie.. too bad they completely screwed up Rodan both by his new shrunken size and by the stupidly stiff puppet..
..other major problem is there is no clear villain in the story...
The part where Rodan brings Godzilla back from the dead always bugged me. It just doesn’t make sense.
I guess altough Rodan loved him, he knew he really wasn't baby G's brother and that Godzilla would be a better caretaker for him. Also probably wanted the big G to kick some mecha-ass for payback.
I meant that it doesn’t make sense how Rodan’s energy would be able to regenerate Godzilla’s brain
Oh okay. Fire Rodan is atomic too maybe that? These kinds of things happen in Godzilla movies all the time so I try not to think too hard about them
I didn't like that either.
I can't think of a single plot point in Vs SpaceGodzilla that is really carried over into Vs Destroyah, and as far as the Heisei era is concerned, that's a marked improvement.
most plot points aren't carried over in the showa era.
But to each their own I guess
yeah, especially since he doesn't give that same treatment to other godzilla films.
How does Godzilla junior exist was he also mutated by radiation
This is a really fun Godzilla movie, but it's not a "near perfect Godzilla movie" as you said. I still enjoyed it though
I know it's a small thing, but I've never been a fan of the look of the torso section of this incarnation of Mechagodzilla.
This movie was really alright in my opinion. The design of MechaGodzilla in this film is my least favorite of the 3 (4 if you count the anime trilogy) The best part were the monster fights and the interactions with Baby Godzilla and the humans. 7/10

I love this video so much because I have Godzilla and Mechagodzilla I love it.
An amazing movie!

@@Godzilla-jr5gi Thanks for contributing nothing to an over year old comment.
in all seriousness how is the heisei movies worse than something like the reiwa series? those movies did the worst aspects of the heisei era and did them much worse! like the slow and immobile kaijus, them being overpowered and consistently beam spamming.@@dylanemery9855
As for
soo...did rodan just mistake the godzilla egg as a rodan egg or did rodan straight up want to eat it?
My first watched Heisei Godzilla movie
I'd say this is a 7.5 or 8 out of 10what would u say btw great vid
Gojira09 He puts his star rating in the outro.
Gojirawars 03 lol
このメカゴジラはガンダムみたいに操縦しますね
Hi
I don't understand how these movies looked so bad after Godzilla vs Biollante.
well biollante wasn't that good
@@GSTE_ or it's the BEST Godzilla movie. You must like half assed recycled ideas. You're probably a big fan of King of the Monsters.
This film always bored me. It perfectly sums up everything wrong with the Heisei films.
