  • UConn was the first team to go back to back to back for the NCAA national title in well over a decade, and one of the only players that was a key cog for BOTH of those UConn teams is Donovan Clingan. In the first year, Clingan played a crucial backup role to dominant college big man Adama Sonogo, but this year, Clingan stepped in and became a dominant player in his own right, becoming a force as a defensive anchor and much improved back to the basket scorer as well. His winning pedigree mixed with his impressive size and perceived defensive versatility has put him near the top of draft boards for the 2024 NBA draft, and today, we’re going to break down WHY exactly Clingan deserves to be this highly touted of a prospect, or if he deserves that level of hype at all. We’re going to take a look at his pros, his cons, and see where Clingan fits in the grand scheme of the 2024 NBA draft

    Imagine how much easier it would be to make 3's if you were 7'2" with a 7'7" wingspan, 9'6" standing reach. That's like an average dude shooting on an 8.5' hoop. Clingan will be a great fit with Scoot Henderson. I'm excited to see that pick and roll with Shaedon, Deni, and Grant on the perimeter to punish double teams in the paint.

      @@Big_Krone He's a better finisher and defender than a young Hibbert. Hibbert still peaked as a top 5 dpoty candidate.

    Great points all around, nice work on this video.
    His screens and passing and roll to the bucket look pretty nice to me, impressive for someone his size and defensive ability. He seems like a great fit in a league that runs so many pick and rolls. But you need the elite playmaker to unlock his effectiveness there?

      Yeah I’d say so. Main reason why I love the fit with the Grizzlies. Seems like he’d fit in well in their system with Ja/Bane

      @@melteddoughnutgaming1789 Clingan projects as a 20-minute-per-game player right now so he would back up Ayton. Then, Portland has the flexibility to deal Deandre before his next extension comes up. Portland doesn't need guards at all, unless they deal at least two of the ones they already have.

    Maybe how people view him is related to how they view Gobert, who also doesn't move exceptionally well. I am a big Gobert fan, and hope Clingan could reach that level of defense despite his movement limitations.

    • @hoophierarchy
      @hoophierarchy  7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Gobert is probably what you’re looking at for Clingan as far as higher end outcomes go. Can’t be mad if he turns into that type of player

  • @michaelahurt

    I really don't get the Clingan thing.
    He's gonna be a good roller/rim defender but like you I don't see a guy who can actually defend on the perimeter. He's just too big and easy to get off balance. It's physics.
    I feel like last year when people tried to tell me Scoot was this elite Ja Morant level athlete. Similarly, I just don't see super high end movement skills with Clingan.
    (Also bringing up Lively -- I get it but these two guys are on a _completely_ different level athletically. I don't think its fair to expect him to be that level of finisher)
    Clingan is basically Walker Kessler to me. Which is a nice player. But like you said that's just not what you want from a top 5 pick.
    Although the potential as a handoff hub who can make backdoor passes is intriguing. Although I question if he has the mobility to be a good short roll passer. I don't think he's agile enough to avoid charges and pick out passes as he works downhill.
    1000% agree on Memphis being a perfect fit though

      I pretty much agree, I don’t see Clingan as any degree of high end prospect. He should be solid, but highly unlikely to be spectacular.

    • @justinah7400
      @justinah7400 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      He doesn't have to defend on the perimeter. He fills important pieces of the puzzle for the Blazers to become a winning team. Scoot and Clingan will be a force to deal with in the pick and roll, forcing most teams to help in the paint while there is guys like Sharpe, Deni, Simons and Grant to punish the defense with 3's.

    • @justinah7400

    Definitely NOT an elite finisher, come on now. He'll be fine but will never be anything like elite. Post scoring will be good against switches, but nothing else.
    Still, really like his game. Fantastic pick for 7 in a weak draft. Can't wait to see what he can do in the nba.

  • @shake6321
    @shake6321 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

    if you are a big you better play amazing defensive nowadays for a variety of reasons.
    - you gotta be able to switch
    - you are almost always a liability on offense.
    that’s why clingan scares me. if he can’t defend he won’t make up for it offensively. no team in their right mind will want him as a top 3 scoring option.
    gets bigs who are A+ defenders and wings who are A+ scorers.
    if your defensive bigs can score and your offensive wings can defend you win championships like the celtics.

    He can make lob dunks from a foot out.... neto most over rated big guy in a long time, Edey destroyed him in the title game. Lousy shooter, real lousy free throw shooter, nothing special as a rebounder for his size. A poor mans Brook Lopez who cant shoot at best.
