Awesome playing! It is nice to see a classical player that can memorize a piece. Also, Chris Abell makes some of the best flutes and whistles in the world. His work is unbelievable.

Ms. Agnew, I, on the other hand, found the "noise" contributed to the performance and made it one of the most intimate recordings of this piece I've ever heard. More like the experience of being the player rather than the audience, or maybe of being in an audience that is so small that we are only a few feet from the performer. It also added to the performance in giving the listener a rare sense of the physicality of the instrument itself -- it's a different thing to hear this on a wooden flute rather than a silver one -- and hearing the action of the valves, that soft pop of the valve covers, the silver hitting the cork, breathes the same kind of life into your performance that well, hearing your breathing makes. It's alive in a way that Bach himself or his audience in a chamber would have heard, and that makes it memorable and rare. If not for that, if the desired result is this complete disconnect from the reality of the instrument (lest the production be "ruined"), why not just crank it out on a synthesizer? Those things make it a performance (and a wonderful one)!

thats funny that commenter says bachs audience would have heard the click clack of keys when baroque flutes only had one key

@@Thesomeguy248 true but by Mozart's time, or Beethoven's the flutes already had several keys so what's the problem?

This performance was utterly divine! Perfection! Heavenly! The Abell Flute is unparalleled! And the way you express it, so passionate and Virtuosic. Your timbre is very reedy and pungent. I could listen to you all day! Btw for those haters the "clicking" is a result of cork kickers, a precise pad job, and amazing craftsmanship. That percussive "pop" is indicative of a well made Flute.... So y'all can take several seats, Every seat and listen to this beautiful work of artisanship.

can you say more about the flute? from the look of it I assume it's grenadilla, but this is obviously not my field

@@tomswiftyphilo2504 Indeed, good eye, it is a very high end, Handmade Flute in aged Grenadilla (M'Pingo or African Blackwood.) Sterling mechanism, Made by the Abell Flute Company. Truly an exquisite and highly coveted masterpiece.

Thanks for your comments Josh, I'm glad you like the video. There is actually a microphone placed above my head which you can't see in the video which seems to exaggerate the key noise quite a bit. It isn't an issue with the flute itself as you'll hear from the other videos I've posted using this instrument. Thanks :)

I like how the sound of the wooden flute has body. The low notes don't sound overblown and unstable, as though they might jump up an octave. The tone is even throughout the range played. Obviously a very fine instrument. Powell? I enjoyed the interpretation, too.

Transverse Flute is the technical term used for Flutes like the one you see her playing. Flute is the broad categorization for any number of instrument called a flute like Native American Flutes, Pan Flutes, etc. Transverse is more specific.

@nsrAgnew Ah, well that explains it. Lord knows I've been a victim of some super-mic'ed key noise. :) Is the Abell your primary flute? His instruments are really magnificent! (The Mendelssohn Scherzo recording on my channel was made with my Abell, and I just LOVED that flute!) You really do a fantastic job of maximizing the tone color potentials of the wood flute...love all your videos! :)
