  • Guitarist Tariq Harb performs J.S. Bach's monumental Toccata and Fugue, BWV 565. This is an adaptation for solo guitar by Edson Lopes.
    The Toccata and Fugue in D Minor, BWV 565, is a musical composition in two parts for organ, written sometime between 1708 and 1750 by Johann Sebastian Bach, and known for its majestic sound, dramatic authority, and driving rhythm. The piece is perhaps most widely known due to its appearance in the opening minutes of the 1940 Disney cult classic Fantasia, in which it was adapted for orchestra by the conductor Leopold Stokowski. It also has a strong association in Western culture with horror films; it was included in films such as Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde (1931), The Black Cat (1934) and The Phantom of the Opera (1962).
    The first part of Bach’s piece is a toccata, the name of which is derived from the Italian toccare, “to touch.” It represents a musical form for keyboard instruments that is designed to reveal the virtuosity of the performer’s touch. Bach’s take on the toccata is typical in that it has many fast arpeggios and runs up and down the keyboard but otherwise is generally free form and gives the composer much latitude for personal expression. In Bach’s day, toccatas often served as introductions to and foils for fugues, setting the stage for the complex and intricate composition to follow.
    The fugue - a technique characterized by the overlapping repetition of a principal theme in different melodic lines (counterpoint) - that is the second part of Bach’s composition reflects the particular popularity of the form during the late 1600s and early 1700s. Bach made much use of the fugue in his compositions, most famously in solo organ pieces such as this one but also in instrumental works and choral cantatas. This particular fugue is quite unusual in its form; it is a plagal fugue using plagal cadences as opposed to the authentic cadences that Bach usually employs. It also does not introduce the subject in all the voices one after the other in the beginning of the fugue. Instead, Bach slips in sequences in between the announcements of the subjects which is again quite unusual for a Baroque fugue. The fugue, with its accompanying toccata, is not only the best known of Bach’s many fugues but the most famous of fugues by any composer.

      I don't feel that way... everything's relative, though. I suppose whatever instrument a person has played the most is the "easier" instrument. Every instrument has its unique challenges, that's for sure.

      My thoughts exactly. The fermatas allow for great expression of the musician by not specifying the length of the rest. In my opinion it is more accurate to say that during the rests he "plays nothing" rather than "not playing".

    I'm a student classical guitarist, ... (studied piano for 7 years), but this performance is unreal. I'm ready to simply throw my "Fernando Sor Studies" out the window, and go back to playing harmonica as I did when I was 8 years old, {which I never got the hang of either}. I'm 66 years old now, ... guess maybe in another life. Brilliant performance!

      I know you posted this a year ish ago... I learned guitar right handed (even though I'm not right hand dominant) off and on throughout high school and college. Unfortunately I got sick and even though it barely stuck during lessons I seriously lost it after all of my surgeries and such... I decided to buy an electric left hand guitar and use Rocksmith to learn (I am still debating a teacher because one on one can't be beat) but maybe that'll help you keep with it?! They have lessons and technique games as well as "learn a song". Not to mention you can get custom content so you don't have to pay for songs to learn though the popular ones are locked to pay. I think it might help because it has me! We all know how much we need music in our lives and I'd hate for you to give up! If I can do it through physical and mental trauma and illness than so can you! I believe in you!!! 💙😁

    I didn't believe that this complex piece could be transcribed for classical guitar. I am glad i clicked to start the video. Though it is more like an adaptation than a transcription, it is very enjoyable... and it showcases what a fine instrument can do, expertly managed :) will hear it often. Thanks

    • @robkrug4304
      @robkrug4304 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I'm by no means a concert level guitarist but I am of the strong opinion that you can do anything on the guitar. Perhaps educated decisions must be made in terms of transpositions and displacing certain notes by an octave or perhaps excluded all together. But for the most part whatever it is it can be done.

    • @johndevilbiss6607
      @johndevilbiss6607 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@robkrug4304 i wouldn't go so far as to state "can do anything"... for every instrument has its limited range of notes, and a computer can "play" much faster. There are also limitations as to the spread of the Left hand fingers. A transcription would play every note in Bach's composition for Pipe Organ; an "adaptation" is what you mean. A Pipe Organ is played with 10 fingers to press on keys, plus 2 feet to press on the bass pedals.
      For 'ukulele, it would be even more difficult to adapt this masterpiece from Bach. Nowadays, church organists don't compose much - there's so much to draw from, once an efficient music notation was developed.

    • @will9357
      @will9357 2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      I believe the prevailing opinion among scholars at present is that Toccata and Fugue was originally written for strings and transcribed to the pipe organ later, but that only a copy of the piece for organ survived. It's a very odd piece on a pipe organ, even leading other scholars to assume Bach would never have written it because he never would have written an organ piece like that. For organ, it's simplistic, bombastic, and breaks very many of the rules Bach was devoted to following... however, it's is far more natural as a composition for strings and here, the level of complexity is appropriate for a virtuoso performer.
      As far as 10 fingers and 2 feet go, much of Toccata and Fugue consists of octaves, if the piece was transcribed to organ, it's likely that these would have been put in to fill out what would have been a sparse sound for such a powerful, and characteristically multi-voiced, instrument; those octaves are the only part of the composition that seem to be missing here.

    • @johndevilbiss6607
      @johndevilbiss6607 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@will9357 So, therefore, the scholars could have transcribed it for string orchestra.
      What we know for sure is that the piece survived as a Pipe Organ version... (With J.S.Bach's name on it.. ) The rest is speculation. Scholars get paid to speculate...

    Mega ultra wow and respect. This has to belong to the history of what a classical guitar can achieve, perfection in every single aspect of music: nail tone, rhythm, interpretation, groove, continuity, the guitar itself, the reverb, the control, the presence of the artist throughout this gigantic piece.One of the best to ever play this instrument in my opinion.As a classical guitarist myself have to admit I didn't even expect that summit to be conquered.Almost shocked and I'm not exaggerating at all.
