Bach - Flute Partita in A minor BWV 1013 - Root | Netherlands Bach Society

  • This Flute Partita in A minor, performed by Marten Root for All of Bach, is Bach’s only known work for flute solo. The piece consists of four stylised dances. The Allemande is directly reminiscent of the cello suites and violin partitas, so this piece probably originated in the same period, namely Bach’s years at the court in Köthen.
Recorded for the project All of Bach on November 28th 2015 at the Oude Dorpskerk, Bunnik. If you want to help us complete All of Bach, please subscribe to our channel bit.ly/2vhCeFB and consider donating bit.ly/2uZuMj5.

@@saurabhsaoji8680 You're right : nothing here to compare. Marten Root played a piece composed by J. S.Bach. He learned and remembered every single note in the score. That was his aim - his effort. If you do not like the composition - and/or his interpretation, it's fine.(You can turn to your favourite music/musicians instead
Improvisation is a different artform. In music there is nothing like inferior or superior. Musicians who show despect for less experienced players / players with different preferences - have something to learn in regards to manners-ethics.

It bothers me. It’s the the thing you work on, so the music can sing and not sound like a beat box, which admittedly has its own charms. Yes, slamming keys down is very disruptive to the illusion of legato. The other thing that’s very difficult on flute is not popping the keys open. So the tone is always matching the ones next to it.

Incredible - each note has presence, and the performance as a whole has a structure and flow. I long for the day I can explain and think through this more intelligently and fluently, but for now I am content with being able to identify basic things and, most importantly, listening in enjoyment. Also, I learn a lot from the comments on these videos, with regards to history, performance, and theory behind the music of Bach, which is a wonderful thing in itself.

Wow! His Sarabande takes my breath away. So sensitive! And his ornamentation in the repeat, even though complex, fits smoothly into the piece seamlessly, as if it were written that way. I love the mellow sound of the instrument. As a bonus, he has the body language to match his sensitive dynamics. This is my new role model for playing that piece.

  • @dionexxv

It is not easy to achieve that pure and natural tone of the instrument in baroque and at the same time so expressive music. Bach's music is beautifully complicated.
In the interpretation is simply perfect is a teacher of the instrument.

Bach seems to capture especially in the start of the piece the undying longing for something beyond reality something magical and enchanting we can believe in from a time before the invention of technology

You will think me a sentimental old woman; but I do know what it is to play the flute. This had me in floods of tears all the way through, just for the beauty of it.

Performance is stunning! The flute is tuned down very low, even lower than a standard baroque pitch. It's actually sounding in G minor

      שקד בר-שי
“Standard” according to whom? I’ve read that some French orchestras played as low as A = 392 ... and that _Chorton_ in Leipzig under Bach’s tenure was A = 470.

    • @AndreasGilger
      @AndreasGilger 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

One could argue that this is a very ordinary pitch and a modern flute playing this would sound at b minor :) Besides, as the other commenter said, 415 was far from being the "standard" pitch in the 18th century

What wonderful playing of a miraculous piece. So many things to enjoy but for me it's the unerring sense of where the music is going allied to such a seductive sound, at once sweet and powerful. Such a lovely lower register, which really "fixes" the bottom line. Many congratulations to all concerned for making this available.

That's a great performance. That first movement is such a balancing act between emphasizing the structure everywhere, and keeping the flow going. To me, this is one of the best performances I've heard of this movement. Ah, and he ignores that weird note at the start of the second half that was probably a typo. Good choice.

I must say one of the most inspiring things to hear Root play all alone, and it's overwhelming in a great way because of how challenging it really is in all aspects. From a woodwind background I am in awe of how beautifully this is played technically, and even more so in how the music itself shine absolutely the most

  • @Chrisgrecomusic07

There's so much thoughtfulness and precise detail in this performance, a structuring of phrasing that is beautifully aligned with the harmonic / melodic path. And, at the same time containing unique choices throughout made by the performer that are organically woven within the inherent structural fabric of the work, all the while making it absolutely committed to beauty. There's so much more going on here. Thank you so very much Marten Root. Absolutely beautiful.
