...so happy I stumbled upon this. This is the same idea that popped up in FWW 279 tips. The cut t- track ideas are endless. Thanks for sharing and changing my thoughts on how I make my jigs now. Now off to the shop to make my domino experience more pleasant. Oh and thanks for 279!!!

I attached 4 legs to aprons for a small table..16 dominos no marking, all on the tight setting, all ended up flush....perfect!!! Thank you

Hi Peter, sorry for late response, for some reason I don't get notification on all new comments and therefore miss them. Thanks for your compliments, I'm usually not a man of great words when it comes to my own inventions but in this case I actually agree😊. This IS a great jig and the first of it's kind as far as I know. Copyright will not be enough though, a patent would be needed and that is something I don't have economic muscles to go through.

Very nicely designed and presented, thanks. The only change I might make is to use toggle clamps mounted to the movable (triangular) fence. They could save a lot of clamp twisting, especially if there were a lot of pieces to cut that were the same thickness.
Thanks! Yes I'm aware of that, for larger runs toggles are faster. Problem is the put a load on the jig which needs to be quite beefy if using toggles. For shorter runs the difference is not that much, especially since the rail clamps doesn't require any fiddling to adjust to different workpiece thicknesses and widths.

Thanks Edwin, yes this jig really shines in frame making. Sorry but I'm not inrerested to make another jig. I'm a cabinet maker and that's where I spend most effort and time. Jigs I make to simplify or increase accuracy in my daily work. It's a quite simple build where not much can go wrong, can't you make your own?

Very nicely made jig! I had planned to use dominos in my frames, but not having tried it yet I now realize it will be tricky without some alignment jig. It seemed like you were using the smallest setting on the mortise width - maybe you mentioned it. I assume you flipped to the other side half way through was to keep the frame pieces always with the same side up.
Thanks! Yes, narrow setting on the machine, especially for mitered frames this is important to prevent the parts from sliding in the glue up. Also I keep the reference surfaces downwards towards the jig base. If not using my "flip the fence method" you would need to perfectly center the domino thickness wise and that is very difficult. My method is not sensitive at all to offcentered joints.

You could incorporate hold-down-clamps to the fence to not fiddle around with the T-track clamps.
Toggle clamps? Well. You would need two clamps at the miter side of the fence, two clamps at the straight side and two clamps on left and right side of the domino. That means 8 clamps in total. Also, toggle clamps put a lot of force between the parts which risks to bend the base and/or the the fences. With track clamps this force is taken up within the clamps and there is no risk of bending. To add to that the rail clamps are easier to adjust for various thicknesses of wood. But sure; if this was a production jig, only handling one type of cuts and size of wood, it could make sense to beef up all parts and go for toggle clamps. Quicker but less flexible

So I looked at the Woodpeckers videos and they definitely copied your idea. You do deserve credit for this jig and I applaud this great idea for small wood Domino joinery.

Thanks ! What would the purpose of the tape measure be? I don't see any real use for it, exact flipping of the fence is the key here and referencing a tape measure which is referencing the center line is just not good enough.
Wow, how did you manage to get a Domino with the original pins? Mine, and every Domino I've tried to buy since acquiring my current one, has those not-quite-worthless "paddles" or flaps. The pin-model is SO much better. Brilliant work on your jig.
Thanks! I bought the machine second handed (but rarely used) and it had the old style pins. I think Festool had to change the pins due to patent conflict with Mafells duo doweller machine.
Excellent jig! Well made! Great instruction! One question: on the but-joint frame, why couldn’t you simply have found the exact center of the end grain piece and extend that line across to the side grain piece and then just line up the center line of the domino to those lines. That’s what I do and I get perfect butt joint alignment every time.

If I understood your question correct; The whole idea with this jig is to get more exact result than if aiming for layout lines, and also save some work with not needing layout lines since the jig handles that. If you use your method for the butt joint with perfect results you should get perfect results also for a miter joint(?). I didn't really get the center thing, but many times I want the joint off center, if there's a routed rabbet towards the inside of the joint for example.
Fantastic work, mate! What a phenomenal jig! I will definitely be building one of these. I see that Veritas has created a jig pretty much the same as yours and is charging a ton of money for it. It is definitely worth it for you to copyright and patent your inventions. It would be well worth your while! I am sure you could licence your ideas and have someone like Fast-Cap, etc., pick up the manufacturing/marketing end if you are too busy? Just a thought, and I wish you all the best, sir! Thanks! I'm well aware of Veritas version, they contacted me and pay me royalty. For a one man business like mine, patents is just to heavy and expensive to handle. I'm primarilly a cabinet maker and want to stay that way rather than ending up selling plans. When I have something good to share I do, although without major interest to profit from it. I made one exemption though which is my new Superjig where I will sell plans and have build videos since it's a bit more complex than my other jigs. Btw, I think Veritas price is ok, woodpeckers version is more than twice of that.

Excellent video and very well explained! Question: Any advice on how to get the holes for the domino placed so that the machine is exactly in line with the 2 fences (to the left and the right). Thanks!
@@israelcharo1563 Thanks! No better way than measuring as good as you can and use slightly oversized holes. As I show in the video I align the domino with the front of the fence faces when I mount it.

This is impressive.
For adjustability, would it be possible to mount the domino with the top support down at 90°, then mount to the table upside down so the bottom surface of the top support is now facing up and flush with the table surface? If it is, it would allow you to adjust the height of the domino by the tools adjustment, instead of removing it to add shims.
Needed to read that a few times but now I get what you mean. It's a very clever idea🙂. Though I would be quite worried about flex and inaccuracy and loosing angle setting, with the machine "hanging" only in the top support. My gut feeling is that It's a much less stable and reliable solution. But, very smart and it could be worth doing a trial of it.
Great Jig! I'm going to make one today. I have a question though. I've looked all over the internet for the base plate dimensions. Specifically the spacing between the 2 M5 mounting screws. I'm going to grab a set of calipers and measure but thought I'd ask if you know where I can find those specs on the web?
Thanks! I measured with a caliper, doesn't need to be super precise, make the holes oversized so you have some wiggle room to align the domino to the fence when you mount it.

Thanks! The threaded inserts? Those are M6 but you could of course use other size. If you refer to the threads in the bottom plate of the machine those are M5.
There is an accessory for narrow stock.
On miter joints, the Domino has to be closer to the center, doesn't it?
The jig looks very nice though!
Narrow stock accessory would only handle the end grain cut side and there is some fiddling involved with it. Long side cuts are not helped by that accessory. For the miters, the exact domino location depends on a lot of things, wood width, length of Domino and if there is to be a groove for a picture or something else on the inside etc. This is not an instruction video where to position the domino, I only show how to place it in excatly the same place in both parts.
Hello, thank you for this great idea. I'd like to build it for myself, but the Axminster bit for t-slots is out of stock (and will be in stock maybe at the end of the year). Do you know about some alternatives?
Hi, yes I have a few alternatives. #1. For t-slots that match the rail clamps, cmt router bit 950.004.11 is said to fit. There are probably other M8 t-slots cutters rhat also works. #2. You can use the matchfit dovetail clamps and suitable bit. #3. You can make the base out of 2 layers, then you dont even need a t slot cutter. Make the wide part of the upside down T in the top layer, before gluing the pieces together and the narrow part afterwards. Good luck and just ask if any questions during the build.

@@sedivyvlkodlak you can use just about any router bit for the holes in the triangles. The holes doesnt need to be accurate in any way. For the knobs, I used some from the local hardware store. You can find these cheap on aliexpress for instance, search for star knob. The only tricky part to source was the thumbscrew in brass which needs to be smaller than the thickness of the triangle fence. I bought these ones.

@@CarmoniusFinsnickeri Hello, so I finally built my jig! I have Domino 700, so I had to change the design slightly. I also do not have your latest system for mirroring the triangle .. I created something that is easier to build. It is probably not so precise as your method, so maybe I will upgrade later. I made some mistakes when building the jig, so it does not look as great as your one ... but it works. So I will use it for some time and then probably build a new one so that it also looks so nice and I'll probably also try your system for mirroring later. Thank you for clever innovation and excellent video. Could you please tell us model/product number of the Axminster bit that cuts T-slot for Festool clamps that you refer to at 3:58? Also, in case you haven't heard of it, you may like to check out Ramon Valdez's recent product, Domino Dock, which also transforms Domino into stationary machine suitable for small parts, although IMO not with the level of sophistication or application as your table.

If I built this today I would change and go with the microjig dovetail clamps. I checked the Domino Dock and realized I had seen it before, I would say it has a bit different area of use and is not as allround and precise as mine.
@@CarmoniusFinsnickeri Thanks for your quick response. I am aware of the Matchfit Microjig system and have made several shop fixtures, etc. with it. However, as I work primarily as trim carpenter on site, I have been trying to develop a system of lightweight portable benches in which it would be desirable to accomplish two characteristics that may in the end prove incompatible with each other: The first is that whatever dovetail or T-slot groove system I settle upon be universal throughout my system, i.e., able to accommodate either Festool style or Microjig clamp heads everywhere, so that whichever style clamp I have on the job can be used. (I especially favor the Festool and Bessey quick action ratchet type clamps.) The second characteristic is that the groove system not require either work top thickness greater than 19 mm or additional reinforcement form below, as you have rightly seen the need to do with your table, in order to avoid that the work surface become too weak. As I say, I'm not sure these two characteristics are compatible with one another. So far, it looks to me that the Microjig system requires groove depth of only 10 mm, due to the strength characteristics of the dovetail shape, whereas T-slots required for typical track clamp heads must be at least 12-13 mm deep in order to avoid leaving insufficient material either above or below the slots.
Another TH-camr, roughcutprince, has experimented with alternately configured (10 degree) dovetail grooves that will accommodate both Microjig and Festool/Bessey clamps. I have not yet tested his ideas or conclusion that such a dovetail slot is strong enough to resist premature wear or immediate failure, but his solution looks very promising.

@@michael.schuler Thanks for your thorough explanation. There is also an option to file away a little bit of material on the festool clamps to make them fit the microjig dimension dovetail tracks. There is a video about that mod on youtube.

That seems like it might be a better and more efficient solution, as I will be spending far more time cutting slots than it would take to file a few clamps, and I also like the Microjig dovetail cutter with its integral softening of the top edge of the groove. Have you done this clamp modification? Does it compromise the fit of the Festool clamps in the guide rail slots at all?

An old fashioned horizontal boring machine w two dowels is much faster, simpler, cheaper, more stable and proven strong. I own a domino 500. Good for its portability for use on the jobsite and for joints that require more stability than usual such as ironwood with sepo dominos and two part epoxy exposed to the elements.
Yes? This jig was mainly to simplify a few things the Domino already can do, for those who rather extend/improve the use of their Domino than buying a horizontal boring machine.
@@CarmoniusFinsnickeri yes the table does that and the combination works for a hobbyist or for a few joints. My contribution is toward a production shop where time is money.

If you live outside eu it might be easier to source the microjig dovetail clamps and corresponding router bit. Identical concept just different geometry.

Fine with me, go ahead. If you do it I would go for the microjig dovetail clamps as they give a better clamping interface. (Those clamps were not invented when I made this jig)

No plans unfortunately. A few reasons to this, to start with it's a quite simple build and should be possible to make without plans, there is some extra info and links in the video description. Secondly, since Veritas started producing this and pay me royalty it would be like shooting myself in the foot to release plans. If you build your own and have questions just ask.

11:55 can't you just leave the last butted piece clamped down and align the fence to that?
No. The fence is flipped using the center of the cut (which is centered around the guide pins on the machine) as reference. Using the work piece as flip reference would only work if the domino cut is 100% centered in the work piece. My method is more flexible (cut doesn't need to be centered in the work piece) and also more reliable. Also your suggestion would only work on 90 degree joints, miters or any other angle it would not work.
Oh, my mistake, I see it now.
Maybe a self-centering contraption could help? Like a center finder where you can leave one of the two sides as a fence for your blue parts, then switch it over to the other side.
Just thinking how to avoid possible mistakes using measurement tools and sacrificial pieces.

As crappy as it is to consider, if the design was not patented (which is super hard for individuals to do), then there's no actual stealing here. But yeah, this is clearly a refinement of that design. He doesn't sell plans or anything, though, so it's no more than when Rockler or WP or Woodcraft or similar come out with a table saw sled or shooting board. There's no damage to him or his business.
Also keep in mind that there are tons of TH-cam videos showing copies of WP designs being sold for cheap. So I guess it cuts both ways.
But it would have been nice if they could have acknowledged inspiration at a minimum. Unfortunately, lawyers will just about always advise against that.
@@Psychlist1972 For me it's not a matter of money and when I wrote "stole" I didn't have money in mind. As you say I have no patent for this and I never had money or world fame in mind when I invented and presented this jig. It upsets me a bit though that woodpecker pretends this is their innovation. "The idea for the MortiseMatch came about when a few of us were trying to use the Domino on some narrow, mitered frames." The Domino was released 15 years ago, and I have a hard time believing it took 13-14 years for woodpecker to try the machine on narrow stock and see room for improvement. It's pretty obvious they have seen my movies and copied a lot of it, especially the main innovation how to flip the fence from right to left side, my final version in the link below. Some companies offer royalties to innovators even if they don't have to do it legally. @@CarmoniusFinsnickeri Yeah. I get that. Legally they didn't have to do anything, but it would have been a pro move on their part to at least acknowledge the inspiration. But I know corp lawyers just about always insist that no one do that. Also, I missed the part about them claiming they just came up with the idea. That's a whole new layer, and I agree that's pretty crappy. The solutions are way too similar to have been something someone at WP came up with independently.
I was on the fence (no pun intended) about getting one. This tipped it against getting the WP jig.

*3rd Most expensive joinery machine in the world* ...... both Lamello and Mafell make joinery machines that retail for more than the Festool, at least in the states. Rare is the time I've been able to say Festool cost less than the competition lol. In the U.S. Festool is almost always the most expensive product when compared to similar offerings from other power tool manufacturers however oftentimes festool products stand alone in terms of in class competition with no direct competitors. It also must be said that the festool products which can be compared apples to apples with competitors are almost always of a quality far better and usually packed with innovations and features not seen on any other tools which sort of places them in the same class in name only.
I like and buy WP tools - I love American-made quality. However... when I saw the MortiseMatch I thought... wait a minute-- I've seen that before, At the very least, WP should acknowledge your very clever design. Its disappointing that there was zero nod to your ingenuity. Theirs is clearly based on what you created.

14:00 when the price is thicker, use two Dominos? More stability and no need to adjust.
If it's thicker than 30ish mm that would be an option. Thinner than that (depending on domino thickness) the two dominos would collide. Center of cut is 10mm up, if using 6mm domino the upper edge of cut is 13mm up. In a 30mm thick part that leaves 4mm material between the dominos, in a 26mm part it leaves 0mm gap between them.

It was heavily debated when their version was presented a few months ago and I wrote my view on things in the comment section to their video. Sure they "borrowed" some ideas from my jig.
Great jig but you should always remember people look at everything in your camera frame. Next time, zip up your pants. SMH

Very nicely designed and presented, thanks. The only change I might make is to use toggle clamps mounted to the movable (triangle) fence. They could save a lot of clamp twisting, especially if there were a lot of pieces to cut that were the same thickness.
