    Floodgates can be destroyed by swimming building destroyers. Protip: Get used to using bridges as makeshift floodgates. Can cause excessive !!FUN!! if improperly set up!

      Back to back bridges that raise up and touch each other are basically indestructible as long as they have walls on the side.
      This won't stop flying/jumping creatures from going over so ensure your design takes that into consideration.

    • @SWA81
      @SWA81 ปีที่แล้ว

      @petergraphix6740 one raised* bridge can block a 1x1x1 pathway, they stop flyers & jumpers. Provided there is a ceiling where the bridge is placed under.

    I would stairwell the drain first, then dig out the tunnel to the liquid source, leaving that last space like you did and the top floor covered. I would add a fortification in front of the liquid source before the floodgate, keeps fun from climbing up wells. I would also add a grate or bars on the top of the stairs if it is a surface source.

    8:05 That just happened to me today! LOL my two dwarves were working on a platform to store all the water underground, and there was a few pieces of limonite.. guess what happened next! water started to flow inside and there were those two sneaky-rich-looking dwarves!
    I've never screamed so loud internally hahaha! thanks for the videos! they are really really helpful!

    • @xXRickTrolledXx

      I get past aquifers by first finding where it is, and digging a 2x2 stairwell down through it, smithing the walls on the way down

    Hi, thx for your clear tuto. Some advise to build a fortification in front the floodgate on order to "filter" the incoming water. What is your pov about this topic?

    • @Ic0nGaming
      @Ic0nGaming  ปีที่แล้ว

      Definitely a good idea! It keeps enemies out which could destroy the floodgate. Fortifications though are kinda indestructible, so it helps to keep the water system free from enemies.

    Hello! Thanks for the video!
    I have a question about these artificial ponds. Since water is constantly flowing from the river can you designate an area for fishing inside your fortress?
    Another question regarding fishing, I read that rivers have set amount of fish population and you can make them go extinct. Is it still a thing in steam version or do rivers repopulate the number of fish?

    • @SWA81
      @SWA81 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Biomes come with a fixed number of animals.

    • @theldraspneumonoultramicro405

      can confirm water do permanently run out of any fishable creatures eventually, took my 2 legendary fishing dwarfs about a couple years to permanently exterminate all life in my river.
      i do belive it is possible to maintain a permanent population of larger fish like Carp for example by carefully regulating the catching of them to allow them to reproduce.

    Since you built your floodgate one level below the water source, wouldn't the water spill over the closed floodgate? I'm new to the game so I assume I'm misunderstanding a mechanic here, but had to ask before I try setting this all up myself.

    • @Ic0nGaming
      @Ic0nGaming  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It won't spill over. The water never goes higher than it's highest point. And the water really only begins where you can see a height number of the water on the map (have to enable it next to your minimap first).
      So in a nutshell: It's fine, cause water never goes higher than it's origin point.

    I'm wondering if making a reservoir that lasts all winter is possible, how big of a chamber would it have to be?

    • @vonsch9793
      @vonsch9793 ปีที่แล้ว

      What do you need so much water for? Water is only consumed by dwarves in the hospital. They don't consume much. If you need flowing water to drive a waterwheel, there are ways to do that that require a whole 11 units of water and don't consume any. For other applications, the enemy of water is evaporation, which happens only if the water isn't deep (3+ per tile.) Too much water is a far greater risk than too little! :)
      If you want a steady supply of flowing water, light aquifers are your answer.

      @@vonsch9793 dwarves need to drink water every three weeks

    • @FilmScents
      @FilmScents ปีที่แล้ว

      depending on the size of your fortress, my guess is a cistern the size of 10x10x5 will last you a very long time but you wont be able to let your dwarves wash up regularly with it

  • @jalford383
    @jalford383 ปีที่แล้ว

    Na, I don't have the luck with levers that you do , every one I set up , will not link to any building, setting right next to a flood gate. what am I doing wrong?

    • @Ic0nGaming
      @Ic0nGaming  ปีที่แล้ว

      Make sure you have mechanisms left over when you want to link one building to the other. You will need at least two - one for the floodgate and another for the lever (that makes a total of 3 mechanisms involved). There's also a button with a yellow exclamation mark next to "Link A Building To a Trigger". If you click it, the task will be the most important one in the fortress. And if a white box with a green checkmark appears in front of the task, some dwarf has picked up the task and will do the job.
      If it STILL doesn't get done, just delete the task and retry. Sometimes, somebody gets stuck in a different task and never completes the job he taken over. Hope this helps!

      @@ConnorLowWhistle personally I dig a channel down in the tiles before the fortification-drain at the edge of the map, and create a fortification-drain on that z-level as well. This way the water falls down in the tile before going out through the fortification and that has worked for me every time
