The Walnut dye is very cool Mercedes...well done. Love the different shades of brown you got. You may have already found this podcast, Cabin boy knits using plant dye.🥰,Sharon.

I love that dark brown you got with the walnuts! When you put the skein in the pot did you un-twist it? and you left that in 24hrs? I might try that, theres a huge walnut tree down the road. Thank you for discussing mindful foraging for sustainability! I wonder how your work on the icelandic sweater your mom found turned out, maybe in next episode I will check! Thank you for the podcasts!

Hello! Yes, I untwisted the skein and loosely tied it in a few more places just to secure it.

I'm excited to see what will come out of your modifying this beautiful lopespeya. Unfortunately I'm not on Instagram. I hope, you'll show it briefly here too.

Hey there! Sure, I’ll certainly keep you and the others who might not be on Instagram in mind 😉 and I’ll share the result of my sweater surgery in a future episode.

I loved seeing your walnut dyeing. There's a large tree near me and I have one skein of white super wash so I can't wait to gather some nuts. I really just need the hulls tho, don't I?

Well, I’m no expert obviously, but I think you can just dye using the whole nut! Just pick them up off the ground and throw them into the dye pot. That’s what I did. I tried to find green ones only, thinking the fresher and juicier the better.
I’ve read that you can also smash them a little bit to release more oils from the husk. I actually didn’t come across information anywhere suggesting to fully separate the husks from the nuts for dyeing. Maybe that extra step is just is too labour-intensive and not necessary. Also the smell of the walnuts raw can be quite nauseating for some people (once cooked they’re not as bad), so in my view, the less processing the better.

But, it is true that the dye comes from the husks, and not the inner shell/nut.
I hope your dyeing experiment goes well, Debbie. Good luck!
