Google Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro hands-on

- After teasing us for weeks with trailers showing off the Pixel 8 series, Google is now ready to give us all the details about its latest flagships. The Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro look largely the same as their predecessors, with a couple of key differences. The regular Pixel 8 is slightly smaller, which makes it easier to use with one hand. Meanwhile, the Pro model has a new matte finish, upgraded cameras and an intriguing temperature sensor. Though it’s smaller than before, the standard Pixel 8 starts at $699, which is $100 more than its predecessor. That seems a little counterintuitive, but the slightly smaller display actually refreshes at up to 120Hz now, which is better than the 90Hz last year. Meanwhile, the Pixel 8 Pro costs the same $899 as the Pixel 7 Pro did, and you can find a slew of pre-order offers from Google and most carriers to sweeten the deal.

7 years of OS upgrade till 2030 😮😮❤
Yeah so manage that battery temperature and keep it within 20-80% charge
I'm kinda annoyed because I love the extra features on the Pro, but that's just a huge phone. I wish they had made these available on a smaller form factor. As a cooking enthusiast, I would have loved to get that temperature sensor but I guess I'll just keep using actual thermometers. I also like the telephoto sensor, but the Pixel 8 will most likely be the one I'll go for if the reviews are good. It's a shame that smaller phones are always the less equipped.
Same. The Pro definitely needs a smaller counterpart - one that has ALL of the same features and functionality. Until then, I hope the Gen 2 Pixel Fold gets the same-if not better camera hardware.
It's not for small hands🤷🏾♂️
The problem is tho that the 8 isn’t THAT much smaller. I too like smaller phones. I have small hands lol.
@@boomson3082 it is quite significantly smaller. The difference is the same if not bigger than the one between the S23 and the Ultra, which makes one useable with one hand.
@@SirW0nka the S23 ultra is 6.8 inches and the S23 is 6.1 inches. The Pixel 8 pro is 6.7 inches and the Pixel 8 is 6.2.
The funny thing is that google didnt even explain why they added a temperature sensor
Well, i think it's quite apparent isn't it? "temperature sensor" to check the temperature 🤷.
@@zema2071 you don't say. 😗 but that doesn't answer the question why this feature and not something else.
Temperature sensor would be amazing to see how much the Tensor 3 overheats
Or iPhone 15 pro lmaoo
@@soberanisfam1323bro HAHAHAHAHAH you’re burning him
@@soberanisfam1323lmao i commented this elsewhere🤣
@@soberanisfam1323 well its nice that Apple lives rent free on your head, you should check that up to be honest. I dont own an Iphone 15 Pro, but I did OWNED a Pixel 7 Pro and I can tell you those termals and battery optimizations absolutely sucked.
WOW😮. The amount of haters comments is clear Google is going in the right direction.
What? Google deserves every criticisms. Software is not enough to fix crappy hardware. Instead of fixing the battery issue they are giving us thermometer 😂😂😂😂
@@tc5006well the processor is more efficient, display is more efficient, and the battery is a little bigger. But yeah, definitely no improvements!
@@tc5006You don't need crazy hardware if you optimize the software.
@@tc5006You'll have to ask Samsung about battery issues. Google doesn't suffer from that.
@@tc5006 You've been using it for so long that you can already comment on the battery life. Anyway...
Love the matte glass and flat screens on the Pros. Still trying to wrap my head around the temperature sensor and their plans for it though...
I think it's for detecting how hot the iPhone is.
They measured ice and got 39°. How are you going to measure ice and get 39°?
No way that's accurate.
Might be useful in a burning building to tell which doors are safe to open.
I personally think it’ll be very good to have once we can use it on us humans 😂 seriously
@@scttymnPixel: Hold my beer lmao
I do prefer lidar sensor than thermometer sensor, for better autofocus in all condition, google why do you not put a lidar sensor on your pixel 8 pro
Because they have the best camera. Why would they?
@@Yellow45678Best camera 😂 more like complete shite
Insane prices, especially in Europe.
Unfortunately it's the same with apple and Samsung 😢😅
Every person that has reviewed this phone could not come up with a scenario for the thermometer sensor. People with kids need this
Hey just dont tho, most people already own a thermometer or u can get one for like £20 of amazon, theres no fucking reason to put it on a phone
Trade in value for Pixel 7 (325$) is a slap in the face to current Pixel holders, looks like Google values more the old Iphone 13 then last year's pixel 7 models! Even Google thinks that pixel is a peace of crap and resale value is close to nothing after just one year. Today i've made a choice to sell my super buggy Pixel 7, get Samsung S23 Ultra!
I think it’s to draw iPhone users over to the Google ecosystem. But I do agree that $325 for a Pixel 7 is low
I think if they have low sales at the end of Q4, they will increase the resale value of the Pixel 7 series to up their Pixel 8 series sales.....
I always get the black color and slap a carbon aramid case. I hope the base 8 battery will be better this time.
Should measure the glass or cup temperature for better accuracy.
Just great. I have the 7 pro and my dad is getting the 8 pro
😮can a battery last 7 years?😅
the phones are smarter than the users. swapping people's facial expressions is a low key evil feature.
Yep. I can't wait until courts start rejecting pictures and videos because they could get easily manipulated by AI now a days.
Your talking about a feature they copied from Nokia Lumia from a decade ago 😂
@@smguk2412 no not really 😂
@@mkhud50n No not really what 🤦 yes that gimmick has already been done and Google trying to make out you need advanced AI for it 😂
@@smguk2412 well I can’t be referring to a gimmick I’ve never heard of now can I? 🤦♂️ Gimmick or not they are marketing it as an AI generative ability. I agree it’s totally a gimmick but it also invites chaos. Fake pictures for fake people. People will def post the very worst facial expressions once this comes out just for likes. 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
Too see how hot the iPhone 15 pro . Google did on purpose with temperature sensors lol
Thank you so much for a clear, concise, cogent, and coherent review! You always do such a thorough, detailed analysis in a cool way. Cheers!
😳😯 Pixel phones with a brain 🧠
Both are 100 more than last years
Pixel 7 and 7 pro will be getting these camera features with OS upgrade ?
According to Google only Tensor G3 can handle the new camera features but we'll see.
Phone releases have been boring for years. Bring back practical features like IR Blaster, multi-day battery life with removability (even hot swap), expandable storage, micro lense, louder and clearer stereo speakers, additional and assignable buttons with a mute switch, durability improvements, compact size options, ultra customizability both external and in software.
7 years WOW!!!!!!
RESPECT ❗❗❗❗
U get a thermometer to see the temperatures from the pixel 7 ...
😂😂
Lol
Lol or the iPhone 15
oddly excited for a temp censor haha
The temperature sensor is a white elephant.
Thats exactly what Ive been wanting in a smart phone.....a temperature sensor, because so many times throughout the day, Im like....what is this things temp? Yea, nah, thats stupid. Why not put a anal thermometer on it too? Or a UV teeth whitener? How about a hair dryer?
I mean if your cooking it’s nice to have..
@@Strategic.BrewingWhy stop at cooking, lets put a swiss army knife on it and take it camping? Lets put a tire pressure gauge on it. What, no night vision for infiltrating enemy territory?
@@nigelhasenbaumI mean if you can why not. I get your sarcasm but hey, I’ll take a thermometer vs nothing.
@@Strategic.Brewing You want to put your phone up to a 100°F surface just to test the temp? Why???
Char kway teow...you are Malaysian?
The temperature sensor : You'll have to shove the device in your... to get the automatic temperature of your body on the SmartWatch... they try to do like Apple... you have to buy an other device to use the device 100%
Just got the blue 8 pro - woohoo
Im enjoying my pixel 7.when/if a better deal on the pixel 8 comes up, ill upgrade.
Best buy is giving like 400 or 450 for the 7 trade in
@@albertbolanos8794 I caved in and got the pixel 8 lol
Yeah, they look like good phones but the hundred dollar bump is a bummer being one of the draws to pixel phones was their great value and so the pixel eight doesn’t seem like I got a lot of upgrades whereas the pixel pro seems to I’ve gotten quite a few but it’s too big of a phone for me. I’m on my feet all day at work and I’m a runner so I can’t be carrying that thing, but if you’re a desk jockey, it might be a really good phone.
Lol the rap at the end was funn
ill use it to check my fever
"Let's talk about all of the sensors except the fingerprint sensor, which was a known problem on previous Pixel phones." Thanks, Engadget for not really providing important information once again.
I mean they gotta fully use the phone to address that in the actual review
@@extra4542 I don't think they need to. It's a simple setup to confirm it, and they can remove it afterward. We all already know it's using the same shitty optical sensor the Pixel 6 and 7 had, people just want to know if the detection has been improved.
@@PersecaFunny enough the sensor works perfectly fine ever since the release of the 7 series and the updates to it. So for exactly a year but for whatever reason people still act like it doesn't unlock the phone 90% of the time.
@@PersecaRead up what embargo is. It's not as simple as you think. They had a very limited time for these devices and NDA signed to not release anything for these pre release devices.
You already judged the phone, you are the type of unreasonable people that the media and tech companies need to deal with.
Please grow up.
@@Snow1e Yes, let's wait until AFTER someone has already made a $700 or $1000 commitment for them to discover the potential problems. That's SUCH a better customer experience. /S It's not unreasonable to advocate for consumers having sufficient information before forking over a considerable portion of their paycheck for a device.
U are REALLY EXCITED about the thermometer??!! 🤔
U ve been looking forward to be able to tell the temperature of everything in your life ? 🤔😆
Cool...love pixel
Awesome 😊
still have a Pixel 6, where I do not like the foto sharpening. Not sure if that's just me/my 6 or a google thing with all Pixels?
You can soften it in the photos app
Temperature sensor.... lol okay they running out of ideas 😅
only if they can measure their own overheating tensor
Iphones, Galaxies and Pixel are now the top dogs of mobile phone. They all have their greats but I love the camera layout and the snapdragon on the Galaxy

You’re making dumb people smart, thanks dude
1.4 million of subs and you don't know how to remove background hum from the microphone while also adding music there? Who is cutting your videos? Fire him.
It juat needs to have a good battery
Cool. A useless new temperature sensor “feature” so they can charge $100 more for a subpar phone and processor.
Let's bring the 3.5 Jack back!
New camera sensors on all lenses, 2400 nit LTPO 120hz OLED display (highest peak brightness in a phone), and 7 years of software support make it seem worth the price hike to me. And at the end of the day it’s just upping the price to match their competitors anyway . non-pro/ultra iPhones/Galaxy don’t even have 120hz displays. I don’t even plan on getting these phones but I think they’ve made more meaningful upgrades rather than just the temp sensor.
Eh yo! Lemme get that OF link in the bio!
You spent too much time on the useless temp sensor
The bes use for this pixel is to replace the OS with Graphene OS.
Why is Google still making phones
Because it's increasingly generating profit for them.
2 dislikes - Still slow charging ..and the temp sensor is just silly.
more crap to waste your money on
facts
@@Hypocrisy.Allergic opinions, know the difference.
7 Years of security patching means you have to waste your money a little less often. Or buy an iPhone as they have 9 years of security updates for an even better cost per year
The biggest highlight of the new pixel phone is the temperature sensor? Sorry the pandemic is over. Literally the definition of a gimmick. I can now...measure the temperature of this cup of water instead of just tasting it or feeling the cup in my hand! And the rest is just additional AI and smart features powered by the CLOUD. How many years do you expect any of these features to be supported by Google before dying a miserable death? Two at most? Google assistant and home are already near unusable with the deprecation of it's services and reliability. The fanboys will of course claim since they are free and don't make money, it's okay to run them into the ground. Ditto all the features in a pixel phone. You paid for the hardware. The software is just a bonus! Even TH-cam has been bugging out on this video and the controls won't pop up. Talk about AI smarts.
Just pre-ordered 3 pixel 8 pro. I paid $609 for all 3. Love the deal from spectrum.
Bullshit.

ugly and no point upgrading from the 7 pro. It still will overheat, wil be slow at times and have all the usual connection issues such as bluetooth, android auto, wifi, network etc like all previous models.

I have no problem with the price of the pro because I do see the flagship aspects but I simply cannot have a big phone, its extremely inconvenient for me. I hate it. I currently have the regular pixel 7 and even that is not small but at least still fits on my fanny pack 😂
Not sure if upgrading to pixel 8 is worth it tho, it seems the true upgrade would be the pro version... 🥲
