Google Pixel 8 Pro Review | Six Months Later...

  • Reviewing Google's Pixel 8 Pro in 2024, six months after launch, to see if it's the best camera phone - or straight-up flagship smartphone. Vs rivals like the Samsung S24 Ultra and OnePlus 12, the Pixel 8 Pro isn't quite as impressive. Gaming isn't as fluid or satisfying, for one, with that Tensor G3 stuffed inside.
However, Google's Pixel exclusive features and AI tools help to elevate it above many other premium phones. And then there's the excellent camera, which is perfect for point-and-shoot action. You can capture RAW images, but the Pixel 8 Pro can spaff out gorgeous photos all on its own, while the editing tools are excellent.
Likewise, I've had no complaints with the battery life. The Pixel 8 Pro is just as strong as other Androids, offering two days of use between charges if you're careful - or a full day of heavy use including lots of camera play. And while those AI features are still developing, they're certainly a worthy addition to an excellent suite of Google tools.
So that's my long term thoughts of the Pixel 8 Pro in 2024. But what do you think? Let us know your own review of this Google smartphone below if you've been using it!

For a company to charge this sort of money for a phone that only has 128gigs of NON EXPANDABLE storage is, in my opinion, an insult.

The trick with flagships like Pixel, Galaxy, and even iPhone is to get the best of adaptive charging. The one Pixel is so well designed. It doesn't overheat during the night, and greatly improves day-to-day battery longevity.

The last three gens of Pixels have proven to be really good, albeit a tad bit half baked on launch. I currently have the Pixel 7 Pro and it is probably my favorite Android phone ever (after the HTC One M7 of course), but I have to admit that Google needs to do a lot more to properly catch-up to Apple and Samsung. The upcoming Pixel 9 will definitely be a step forward, looking into how well Google has integrated feedback into their software updates but the big jump will be during the release of the Pixel 10. Google announced a while ago that they are working on a proprietary 3nm chip, and I think that's where they will start being on par with the latest Galaxy and iPhone devices.

I had bugs and issues with my pixel 8 pro when buying it at launch. Got the 256gb for £1050 which was very expensive. Fortunately was able to return it after the issues I had and the customer service was exceptional.
I then bought it again straight away and managed to get it for £950 with 256gb storage through work with £125 credit on top that I used on my learning thermostat, making the total price of the phone £825. At that price it has really been worth it, and all the bugs have disappeared.

I'm not a huge gamer on my phone - so a lot of those issues don't really affect me.
I know that Google is still investing in better versions of the Tensor to get it to compete with the Snapdragon - but what will that mean for the Tensor 3 in this phone and the promised update support?

So I had the pixel 8 pro for about 3 months. For some reason I enjoyed my experience with the 6 pro much better for some reason. The good wud include the fact that the finger print reader and facial recognition was good, battery life wasn't bad, slow charging. The things I hated was that the bezels easily got scratched or dinged even with a case on. It fell from me once witb a case on the bezel still got a visible dent. I had a camera lens cover and wanted to take it off when I tried taking it off the camera bezel got scratches just from my nails taking off the camera lens cover I put on... The bezels are just too soft. The phone wud constantly loose Bluetooth connection, or asking me to reconnect the device all over again. Loved the recording and transcription. There were just too much bugs to say I was in love. Moved on to a s24 ultra, it's been a month and I can't remember having any issues so far.

I got my pixel 8 pro for the equivalent of £550/650 depending on how you weigh up the cost of a sim only contract minutes/data. For that price I think it's excellent. Camera is phenomenal, games play just fine, and battery when used in 1080/120hz mode is just great at around 8hrs+ screen on time. I only use the 1440p for films that support the higher resolution as my eyes at 50cm can't tell the difference between 1080p/1440p unless really looking for it.
People need to chill about benchmarks and about having the bleeding edge. My oneplus 7T needed replacing because the USB became faulty and the battery started to fail a little, but in day to day tasks it managed just about fine apart from the odd bugs which were common even when new.
My three complaints are it would be nice to have the same pro features but at say 6.4inches as even my big hands struggle occasionally. It would be nice if the 50MP photos took a little less time to shoot/be less susceptible to blurriness. And I would also like a samsung dex style chromebook ish experience.

I bought mine on release as they had a promotion of a free Pixel Watch 2(which sucked). It is a very good phone but not for the money. The camera is amazing. The build quality is nice, but charging is very slow, wifi keeps switching on,i find the screen overly senstive selecting things way too often and scrolls jerky and slow at times, phone reception is not great, temperature sensor is a waste and the performance is noticeably lagging behind top tier phones. It's still a great phone and the software carries it. But it just simply isn't worth it for the money when you can have a higher spec phone for the same price or close enough.
    Id give it 7/10.

Eh depends if you wanna game, if you do then that's fine but I always think that if you wanna game just buy a console or get a pc. Phones are not meant for gaming it's just a nice feature to have but they are not tailor made to game.

@@AssassinIsAfk i dont game on my phone, but me and many other people have had bad experiences with exynos after trying Galaxy phones multiple times. Pixel use a rebranded exynos. When pixel 9 releases it will probably have a chip very similar to the one found in s24, that one is worse in almost all aspects compared to the Snapdragon version of the phone.

I managed to grab one brand new two weeks ago for 600 bucks. I'm quite enjoying the phone. Yeah, no Snapdragon Gen 3 performance but it runs smooth nevertheless. The display is amazing, cameras are great.
Maybe we are all just looking at synthetic benchmark numbers too much. On the daily it works great for everything I need it to do. Granted, gaming is not it's forte so I fall back on playing Genshin and other heavy games on my iPad... But as a phone, man I'm having a blast. Loving the clean software.

Got the Pixel 8 Pro on release with the Pixel Watch 2 as a gift... Sold the watch and basically got the phone for its current price.
I've been generally happy with the phone - it was my main shooter on a trip to South Korea, and the pictures & videos turned out amazing. It's fast for my use cases, haven't experienced any crashes or freezes or anything bad.
My main complaint is the crappy fingerprint reader - coming from the Pixel 4a 5G, I still can't get over the fact that we moved away from capacitative fingerprint readers. I know other flagships use the newer & better ultrasonic underscreen fingerprint readers, but the Pixel 8 Pro still has the old light-based sensor. It's slow, not as reliable as the capacitative ones and blinds the balls out of me at night. Really disappointed.
Other than that this is a 2-day phone for me with regular use at lower res & 120 Hz, which makes me feel safe & happy. I don't use it for gaming at all, so not phased about the performance there, but would be interesting to see how it works in 2030, if it even will
