    I have an interesting story to tell about the use of iodine. In its day you bought a small bottle and used it as an antiseptic for a small wound. I recall my parents applying it many times during the course of my outside playing. On one occasion I had a sore throat. My father took a look and said in was red, swollen, and looked as if there was pus. It hurt a lot. Well he took a long swab dipped it in the iodine and very quickly coated the back of my throat. Immediately it cleared up! No pain, no redness, no pus. And no doctor visit.

      I don't think i ever used mercurichrome, but do remember the name. I do however remember my father bringing home liquid mercury from work in a plastic pill bottle and me playing with it. Now, if there is even a tiny bit of mercury that escaped, everyone is evacuated and hazmat team comes in. I'll never know if that exposure will have caused any future illnesses...I'm 61 now in 2021 so this was back in around 1970ish..

    I had cysts since I was a child, heavy periods yielding huge clots, nodules, cystic breasts, dry, thin hair that got to a point where I didn't cut my hair for two decades and there was no obvious growth. I know it did grow, but was falling out and thinning at the same time. I had digestive problems from childhood and had to study constantly to pass tests then walked away forgetting it all. No taste buds, brittle nails, dry skin; overweight. I started using the iodine in the form of kelp time's one week. I noticed my thinking is more clear. @@di4085 your issue might not be iodine related. Look into B1 and the work of Elliot Overton, also try transdermal Magnesium. And consider getting a hair tissue mineral analysis with a consultation. And check all of your vitamin levels.

    • @Total_Body_Fitness_USA
      @Total_Body_Fitness_USA 2 ปีที่แล้ว +13

      @@di4085 Depending on your age it most likely is thyroid related. Thyroid hormone is needed by every cell in your body. Get a oral 30 second thermometer and check your temperature when you first wake up, again before lunch, again before dinner, and again before bed. If your temperature at any time is below 97.9 then you are hypothyroid. The closer it is to 98.6 the better your thyroid is working. Another thing it could be is anemia which if you are anemic can cause poor thyroid function. Get a full CBC panel and look at your RBC count which should be in the mid to high 4s at the minimum. Also check your ferritin levels which should be in the 70-100 range at the minimum. You could also do a thyroid panel but they are not very reliable. The oral temperature test is more accurate for men and for women as well as long as they are not on their cycle which in that case temperature fluctuations occur.

    I have Autism, ADHD, and untreated Type 2 Diabetes (no insurance, therefore no doctors and no medicine), so when I started feeling a lot of these symptoms you just described I just brushed it off as related to those medical issues and the depression associated with it. However, at the start of this year the symptoms started getting much worse, to the point that I could barely function. I stumbled across these videos about Iodine and Vitamin D deficiency and remembered that I had once been put on a high dose of Vit D because of deficiency in the past, so decided to start taking a 10,000IU Vit D3 supplement and a supplement that has a good source of Iodine, as well as B12 and several other minerals.
    Within just a few days the difference was like night and day. Fatigue and brain fog eased up to a point that I was finally able to function as an adult again after not being able to for several months. After just a few weeks, my dry skin is starting to clear up and the unexplained cold feet has disappeared. I had also been having difficulty swallowing, and that has gotten much easier, so it wouldn't surprise me if I had a hidden goiter that is starting to go away.
    I'm now working on adjusting my diet, as much as our very limited income will allow, but just having the knowledge that many of my worst issues were due to nutrient deficiencies has been a real life saver. So thank you!!

    • @lauragilbert9326
      @lauragilbert9326 2 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      @@maiaallman4635 Well, these things will only really help those symptoms if they're due to vitamin deficiencies, but it definitely doesn't hurt to look into that if those symptoms exist.
      I've also had good experiences with supplements such as Hemp Seed and things that help with focus. Though, I'm not medicated, and would be more cautious trying those things without consulting my doctor if I were because of possible medication interactions.
      In the end, your support and understanding is going to be the biggest help for him and the thing he carries with him forever. As there is no miracle help for these things, just having someone understanding our limitations, our triggers, our meltdowns, as well as our strengths can make all the difference in the world. It takes just a little bit of the stress and weight off in a world that always feels hostile to us, both physically and emotionally.
      I know it's not always easy, for him or for you, but knowing and being open to learning and listening is already your best asset in helping him overcome the hardships associated with ADHD and Autism. I wish I would have had that with my parents growing up, but I didn't learn about mine until well into my 30s and now realize that they both suffered undiagnosed themselves, with no clue how to help since they never had the support either.
      I wish you luck on your journey! 🥰🤗

They don't do that.anymore WHY? They never ask what you're eating especially the salt. They screen for diabetes and iron.
    Our system is a mess.

    I have hypothyroidism, and even though it's been treated, I still very often have ALL the symptoms, except a goiter, which you mentioned.
    I did purchase nascent iodine and in the past week I finally started taking it. I also have been using iodine topically for an infection/inflammation on my chin that only clears up with topical iodine. Within 60 minutes the topical iodine was absorbed, so I knew I was deficient, and that is why I started taking the nascent iodine.
    Results? As usual, the infection/inflammation on my chin started clearing. Now for the very surprising part for me...for the previous 3 days, I have not needed any nap, which is abnormal for me (I usually crash, taking 2-3 hour naps every day)!!!
    Thank you very much for this video, which confirms my experience in needing iodine supplementation in addition to treating my hypothyroidism.

    The simple test for iodine deficiency is to put a drop on your wrist and rub the iodine into the skin with your other wrist. Leave overnight while the iodine is absorbed easily into the body. If your skin clears of the yellow colour very quickly you have an iodine deficiency so keep putting a couple of iodine drops rubbed into your wrists every night until you wake in the morning with yellow still there, then you will have sufficient iodine.
    Iodine lack causes cysts and you can topically add iodine to those to remove them along with warts and skin tags and psoriasis.

      The doctor’s training is treating symptoms with pharmaceuticals. Most are taught that food has no bearing whatsoever in your health. How does a car run IF you put bad (watered down) gas in it? It runs like crap! Same with us, if you eat junk food every day, you don’t feel good.
      We need to eat healthy protein and fats. Carbs are NOT necessary. Carbs and sugar spiked my blood sugar and sends me on a roller coaster of emotions and blood sugar levels that were all over the place. I had to stop eating sugar and carbs to get the roller coaster to stop. If I eat right, my blood sugar is stable, I’m less emotional and I’m losing weight and body fat. Had a goitre large enough to block blood flow if I raised my arms over my head. Doctor kept feeding me lithium until thyroid had to be removed - with no consideration for the goitre. (benign thyroid nodules). No discussion from any of my doctors - GP, endocrinologist, psychiatrist - that this could be addressed nutritionally. Surgery was the option, and the surgeon damaged my voice in the process. You don't realise how much you take your voice for granted until they knock an octave off the top of it. Please, friends, try and address your thyroid problems nutritionally before letting a surgeon go in and "fix it."

    Checking off every box on this list. Diagnosed with T2 diabetes, Low T and Hypothyroidism back in November 2022. Been eating the PHD since then to help get the T2 diabetes under control. Lost nearly twenty pounds out of the gate, then stalled and put back on 5 of the pounds I lost (for a total loss of 15lbs.) Thyroid numbers continued to be off, so was sent for a thyroid ultrasound and they found my thyroid enlarged and a goiter with some apparent nodules. Waiting on appt with specialist and expect it to be biopsied. Checked your channel for info on goiters and this vid popped up. Listening to it, it sounds like I may have been low on iodine for quite some time before getting the T2, hypothyroid and Low T diagnoses. Honestly a little nervous about the biopsy, but gonna kick its ass (whatever it may end up being) just like I'm doing to my T2 diabetes! God bless ya Dr. Berry, and thanks for the great and informative content and the knowledge you share with us all!

    I will definitely check this out because last time I felt something was seriously off my doctors told me it was in my head for years turned out. Had cancer they just never bothered to run tests or anything just looked at me said “you look fine” and sent me home. Mind you this was right after 7 years of them telling me my horrible pain in my abdomen was also in my head and that ended up almost killing me because of t was my appendix bursting then healing then bursting then healing over and over again. They never looked into it because it turned out my appendix was right above my female parts and not where it was “supposed to be.” So now I don’t deal with doctors as much as I can help it and I’ve been displaying these very symptoms for a decade and now that I know it’s not anemia from cancer this could be it because I never have an appetite and I force myself to try to eat. Usually if I get hungry I crave carbs but again no real energy to make anything so I’ll eat carrots or rice you microwave in a bag once a week (trying for once a day but that takes too much energy to do some days.) I really hope this can explain my problem because that seems to be the only thing not on any test doctors ran blood wise and it was never even suggested. I just want to get healthy again so I can get back to being as athletic as I use to be I miss being active and able to function.

    Brain fog is much more than simple forgetfulness. It's like a haze in your brain (hence the name) that makes it hard to understand what people are saying to you, or grasping concepts which are usually within your reach. I have all symptoms except the goitre, or maybe just not seeing it from the weight gain, not sure. Prior to, I only seasoned with salt while cooking and rarely ever picked up a salt shaker otherwise. TSH T3 T4 and anti TPO are perfect, I have been on a paleo diet for years, quit smoking, no alcohol, but I still have my goiter for a dozen years and always tired, I also have a lot anxiety but in my experience caffeine is a big culprit. I tried a drop of Lugol (2.5mg) little by little, after one drop I stopped because I had palpitations for hours and a very very unpleasant stimulation. I tried again with Organic Kelp (250mcg, much less) and had the same reaction...I increased the iodized salt but I have high blood pressure at the moment, and eat multiple portions of fish per day becomes expensive and boring, and there is also the history of heavy metals in small fatty fish so I don't want to overdo it either, I'm a little lost... my goiter doesn't prevent me at all to eat or breathe, but he seems to get bigger with the years and that scares me 😥

    UK Viewer here - Also a first time viewer, HELLO! Errr... Yeah, I never actually knew Iodine was something we have in the Human Body - Obviously, You put these videos out there for awareness - NOt to diagnose, but to have people explore all the possible options that may otherwise be overlooked... But I have to admit the information here is helpful!
    I can honestly say that Many of the things you have pointed at I do have! I do find myself getting unusually tired... Weight Gain, I am 49 now, but up until I hit my mid-20's and got married for the first time, For my height I was a healthy 8 and a half Stone (Sorry, I do not know it in Killos!) - But BALLOONED after to a now 14 stone! 100% much of that is our Processed food - But I have also found it very difficult to reduce my waistline - Age is of course a factor there, but when my diet is MINIMAL and trying to eat as healthy as feasibly possible - And I am losing weight from everywhere else... Hmmm!
    Hair Loss - Yes, I have a slight bald patch but I would not necessarily put that down to an Iodine deficiency as there is male pattern baldness in my family - Also teh potential that the area affected has received damage from an incident in my youth...
    I DO suffer Depression and Anxiety!
    And My memory has always been awful - I can remember teh most inane things that no one needs to know, but will often forget what I was doing from one moment to the next!
    Now as you rightly said, All these can be related to something else - You are NOT diagnosing, It is merely an Advisory! I do feel so many who watch videos such as yours make the mistake of "Self Diagnosing" simply due to you being a doctor... And no one should ever do that! There is one thing though that caught me off guard and has made me want to speak to my own doctor about this and just be sure if I may or may not have an Iodine deficiency...
    Carbohydrate Cravings - YEAH! I do get these A LOT! I can have a full meal - A Healthy Meal rich in Vitamins and Minerals... And still CRAVE and often EAT a copious amount of BREAD not long after! There is no way that my body should require any more fuel, but I want CARBS! I have never thought about the Carbs factor - I always just thought I had a "Craving" for in many cases a bit of "Sweet and Sour" - One of my staples is a Tomato Catsup Sandwich alongside a Chocolate Spread Sandwich...
    ... But maybe it's NOT the tastes I am craving but the CARBS in the bread!
    A Very informative video - Something I am definitely going to pursue my GP to look into at least - Thank you!

    • @edennis8578
      @edennis8578 2 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      I'm late to the party, but these days Americans don't get much iodine from salt or other sources like they used to. We eat much, much less salt than we did years ago, plus the iodine put on salt actually evaporates over time, so if you have a package of salt in your cupboard for many months, there's not much iodine left. People used to get iodine from dairy products because farmers used iodine on the teets of cows, but they no longer do that. Yesterday, I saw a video by Dr. Berg explaining a home diy test: swab iodine on the inside of your elbow, about the size of a quarter or half dollar. Make sure that the iodine is colored, not colorless. If you are deficient, the iodine will absorb into your skin within two hours and the color will disappear.

When I was born my folks lived in central IL, a highly agricultural area, with corn and soybean fields as far as the eye can see. I’m thinking that, although my father was not a farmer, it was exposure to fertilizers for either my mother, myself, or both, that caused my hypothyroidism. And if thyroid replacement hormone is mostly made of iodine, why can’t/don’t I just take actual iodine, and not the thyroid hormone?

    HAS BEEN SUGGESTED: To test iodine is lacking in your body, apply a TINCTURE OF IODINE SKIN swatch test. Take brown not clear iodine from the medicine cabinet (or from pharmacy shelf if you don't stock it) and apply a 1 to 3-inch square on the inside of your arm (*or an area with lighter shade) One coat with the wand applicator. It will appear brownish at first (*remember you results may vary, depending on your skin tone/shade). Then begin to fade to yellow. Then disappear completely. Because you are apply a geometric shape, it may help darker skins to recognize the straight lines of the dye you applied. People with adequate supply of iodine will still see the square beyond 24 to 48 hours. If disappears completely under 24 hours, would indicate there is not sufficient iodine to normalize thyroid secretion to the cell.
    If your body is lacking, it will absorb quite quickly as it is hungry for what it lacks. The application area is suggested as it isn't normally frequently washed like your hands, it is often lighter in melanin in *some skins, and it is convenient to most to apply in that area without assistance. And lastly simpler to monitor no matter your situation. (you can apply to the inner area of the thigh or your abdomen, *soles of your feet, as well. Choose one application area. If lacking you want to recognize how long it is visible).
    *The patch test IS NOT 100% reliable. Iodine can be reduced by the iodide in skin, and because it is WHITE it alters the adjusts the color of brown to yellow. Just the color change is not what you are looking for. But in time if it absorbs/disappears. Best to seek a real test, but it is a start, and an easy at home method while waiting for the appt.
