David Sanborn always lit up the room as a sax player, and I can’t help but admit how much this hurts. I can’t play the saxophone to save my life, but we will all miss David Sanborn, especially me.
this was before youtube in 1981 i never thought i,d ever see this concert it was a special night with al jarreau & randy crawford singing duets together
I was there in 1981 as a drummer with a college group. This night was amazing. I happened to stumble onto Sanborn, Robin Ford and the Yellow Jackets while they were rehearsing and laying down tracks at a studio the night before. I had just finished a trio gig and heard this amazing sound coming from an open door, A couple of guys invited me and the bass player to come in and check it out. It was a total groove session. Unbelieveable.
I agree, seeing these guys perform in person, was WAY BEYOND what you can get from a recording. Unbelievable SOUND SYSTEM controlled by recording studio professionals, sounded like a sound stage u will never hear in your lifetime.
Ahhhh!!! The 80"s. When the funky alto sax players were Grover Washington Jr, Tom Scott and this man here. And on this video, David is clicking on all cylinders. As is everyone else in this band. Smoking stuff.
David Sanborn was the top flite musician on sax! His unique raw/raunchy yet totally under control style has been the number 1 sound and belonged to him alone! It wasn't till Kirk Whalum came onto the scene that that same basic style had a rebirth!!!! Robben is just super!!! ~ FORD ~ ............... HAS A BETTER IDEA~!~
I was there, I was 20 at that time. Marcus Miller was this young amazing musician that everybody was talking about at Montreux that year.. I remember that he played also with Al Jarreau and Randy Crawford. Amazing time..
40 years+ THANKS DAVID! Always enjoyed seeing you perform, meeting you backstage, so much fun. U were always really cool to me, and I know your band enjoyed touring with you so much.
Absolutely smokin'. Funky, funky, funky. Absolutely horrifying. What a band! And as always, Mr. Sandborn lets 'em play. Hard to believe this was 38 tears ago!

RIP David Sanborn.
Robben Ford has always been one of my favorite guys-right around the 5:38 mark he totally starts going for it, just beyond what he's capable of. The whole band slays-so glad I found this clip!

The hole band deliver fantastic performance, but Marcus Miller and Robben Ford are outstanding. Its a post of the top 80's golden groups of fusion jazz - fantastic, thanks.
OOOOOOOOOOOWEEEEEEEEE!! This clip is BEASTING and this band is bringing it HARD! WTF!! Something about american western music and its mass appeal has changed. This is just one ex of pure talent, real music, giving and getting in return. What a clip. If this doesn't inspire you then I am clueless as to what will. Ricky Lawson and MM=Domination..

Robben Ford kills it. I like everything Robben does, but I especially liked his playing in this early 80s Yellowjackets/funk fusion kind of vibe.
Yeah I agree about Robben Ford.
He's absolutely blazing on here!

RIP to the man who hooked me to Jazz one car ride in 1982. Thank you Mr Sanborn. Every live performance captivated me 🙏🏾.
Sanborn, Miller, Manieri, Lawson, Ford, Castro, Larson----Royalty!!!
Is that Neil Larson on keyboard?
Marcus goes full Thanos in his solo and puts that Jazz to work. Sounds absolutely phenomenal!
This outstanding performance could make anyone fall in love with jazz fusion.
You should already be in love with jazz. This is what Jazz is; music from the heart and soul freely express through all to make one sound one band
Such a unique sound! His horn was his like a painter's brush creating a piece of art undeniably his own.

Marcus Miller! He's "bad"! Cheers from a bassplayer in Sweden! God bless!
Wow, nearly 40 years ago since I bought the Casino Lights album and have always loved it, so to see this footage is awesome.
1983 when I bought the same album. Fell in love with the YellowJackets and Robben Ford. Love them still!

My life away.
