Listened to an interview with Robbin yesterday where he said that after Miles told him he liked his playing, he didn’t care what people thought about his playing from that point onward. He wasn’t being conceited, it just brought his self confidence to a whole new level.
That's exactly what every younger, insecure musician needs to hear from someone like miles Davis in this case. Its gonna be a lift for the future playing and developement
Couldn’t agree more. Yellowjackets record is the sweet spot for me. I know he loves to play the blues, but his best moments are taking it outside within that context (for me). His solo records don’t go there much.
I was there ! I remember arriving from France 15 mn before the beginning of the show, arguing with the guy at the press office to get my pass and entering the room just when the concert was starting. Great memory !
Without being a musical professional, I have to say Robben's solo has everything I like in music. Melodic phrasing over the excellent harmonies, so much soul, perfect timing, technique and feeling combined, jazz and blues in a perfect mix. Amazing Robben!!! Got to go and listen to you when you're in CT.
Many years ago, my advisor at music school saw me carrying a Strat through the music department. He remarked, "You will never play jazz with that." I am glad that music evolves.

@@naj_z let me rephrase that. I love most of what Miles did up untill the 80s. Loved all of his earlier stuff the 50s, 60s, even 70s, but I didn't like the 80s stuff that much. But this was better than I remembered.
During this period Miles amazed me in how he found guitarists who at first glance might seem like 'odd birds', yet they ultimately fit into his musical vision seamlessly. And each player looked and sounded totally different from the other: Stern, Scofield, Foley, and of course, Robben Ford. Ford is str8 wailing on this tune!
You forgot John McLaughlin ..... "back in the day" (late '60's). Davis told McLaughlin "you MUST start your own group". John obeyed ...... the rest is history, as they say.
Andrew Bradford John Mcloughlin was and is one of the most amazing guitarists in my opinion. He is very technical without losing any emotional ranges. He has super fast hands, legendary speed they, being stalwarts of the day Miles included, say. He was also a great bandleader with Mahavishnu Orchestra among others.
Keep coming back to this period of Miles recently And this has got to be one of the great all time guitar solos Miles certainly knew how to arrange people and vibes like no one else on earth Without a doubt one of this planets greatest inhabitants
Oh my Boy.....the real bummer is his rythm work on the second song maze during repetition 2 and so.....listen to that closely... A nice challenge&answer fungroovegame is there goin'n on between the bassist and fords picking hand, right wrist....while left barring the funky chords.... The bassline is so incredibly tasty and drums&percussion lay a groove, murderously tight, then miles and the saxophonist, keyboardist, the whole setup on stage, the band playing freely but incredibly tight, i'm explicitly delighted
This is the same line up that played at Lincoln Center.I've seen Robben Ford many times but,for this gig,he really took it to the Nth power and rose to the occasion and outdid himself to reach the heights that he did while playing with Miles Davis.Playing with Miles can do that to a musician.
I saw Miles at the Lincoln Centre in June 1986 - NY Jazz Festival. Robben Ford was in the line-up, the first I had heard of him. THE best concert of my life and it is imprinted into my conscience. The support act was Spyro Gyra. The following week, I was in London and saw John McLaughlin and the Mahavishnu Orchestra at Royal Festival Hall. I live in Melbourne, Australia. The trip was a business trip, paid for by my employer, you get lucky sometimes. :-)
In my mind, there is no question. To say that HRH Sir Miles Dewey Davis was the greatest artist of the 20th Century is to state the obvious. He was so eloquent, so daring, so bild, such a Visionary, a man for all seasons, A Shining Prince for All Time. To surround Himself w/musicians and to compose and to record some the Greatest Music of All Time. That is His gift to Us. Mules Lives!!!
Ahh yes Robben's 'Strat Phase' - we all go through it, the quack, the overdriven sweetness from the middle pickup - he did it well, no wonder Miles liked him
He put Seymour Duncan Hot Rails in the middle and the bridge positions. It looks like a strange configuration, but sounds amazing. He got the the Strat sound in the neck, and Gibson humbuckers style sound in the other two positions. He only needed switch to the middle pickup and the guitar started screaming. Amazing solo, amazing sound.

I talk with one of the Miles percussionist in this video (that's him on 3:22). He lives in Malaysia now. He said Robben Ford is his favourite player and he's so good with his rhythm, his percussive rhythm on guitar.
Me too. And what's great is the more you listen to him the more his phrasing comes through in your own playing. Then it morphs as it mixes with your own musical dna.
baby face Ford, just hilarious. He looked pretty much the same when he was with Tom Scott's group that toured with Joni Mitchell back in the 70s. That was a great show, Max Bennet on bass. Robin can play anything, anything he wants and it sounds fantastic

Actually, Robben was doing his very best to say "Respect" to Miles during the whole of this concert. Miles nods and defers to all of the choices he makes in his band. He hires them; they come running; we rejoice in hearing the results.
Miles Davis never told anyone what to play. If he liked what you as a player, he wanted you to do your thing. He was very much into spontaneity and what different combinations of players brought to the table.

Robben's feelings, referring to playing it the same every performance: "That's not what you want to do when you play with MILES DAVIS!!" Mitch Farkas Shiiiiit I was listening to Ford back in 70's & 80's he use to play for jazz fusion band called the yellowjackets.. man you talk about some riffs they are killers.
This was around 1985/86, probably one of the best live performances of Miles and co-musicians in Montreux.

Check out Larry Carlton over the 70's and 80's. Crusaders and solo albums. You'll hear all of this in certain ways, and from its origin.

Robben's a genius, no one quite like him. Been a fan since '84, 'Inside Story' and I was hooked.

If my memory serves me right, i read in an interview with Robben that Miles wanted the strat sound so he traded his 58' 335 in. For that 58' Strat
