- Have you ever seen art of Amy Rose with an oversized white t-shirt, a plaid skirt, a crossbow and spiked-up spines?
That is 'Fleetway Amy'. I'm sure we all know who Amy Rose is but did you know that the British Sonic the Comic (published by Fleetway) significantly changed Amy's character, abilities and look? I'd argue that Fleetway's interpretation of Amy is, in my opinion, better than her game counterpart.
In this video I want to take a look at the history of Amy Rose in the Fleetway comics, briefly exploring some of her more famous storylines, all the while explaining the many different style and personality changes Amy went through over the course of the comic.

FleetwaY Amy is the way due to a supervisor considering the game portrayal of Amy as offensive to women. I agree. Fleetway made Amy likeable. I know Sonic Boom exists, but this is 1990s comics

Fleetway Charmy is what Modern Charmy ended up being. Then again both companies coming to the conclusion of a 7 year old who is a Bumblebee's personality being annoying and hyper is probably just a coincidence.

I wish Fleetway continued, because I'm interested to see what their takes on later Sonic characters like Shadow, Rouge, Blaze, Big, Cream, and Silver would've been like.
After watching this, I gotta say, I definitely would have preferred this version of Amy, personality-wise. But... I disagree about the cross-bow. I still think the hammer is the better weapon for her.
To me, Amy’s always been more of a versatile wild card; someone who can be a powerhouse, leader, and supporting character, rather than just being one of the three. Her hammer is a perfect reflection of that since she not only uses it for combat, but she also uses it for mobility with her acrobatic moves, and it’s also hints at her background in the mystical arts since she can create tornadoes with a single swing of it. Basically, I like to think of the Piko Piko Hammer as Amy’s version of Thor’s Mjolnir.
The crossbow is much more practical (and believable). Reflecting this characterisation

In one issue she makes a remark about being named 'Aim-y' so maybe that's why they made her a marksman/gave her the crossbow! Always liked fleetway amy though, her obsession with sonic developing into her making fun of him and standing equal to the point Sonic doesn't always know if she's being serious about her obsession with him was a great piece of character development.

even though i wasn't familiar with fleetway's sonic growing up, i really like their take on Amy. I think Fleetway's take on the character does not go completely unnoticed by Sega and IDW seeing how she's the leader of the resistance against Robotnik now, and they did tone down her crush on Sonic just a tiny bit so she's not as annoying as she used to be

This is the Amy Rose we need and want, not the one where Amy Rose chases down Sonic furiously with her stupid hammer just because he only sees her as a friend! If it were the other way around, there would be a lot more outrage like “Sonic should remember not only Amy’s dates, but also his “respect women” juice before he rapes them”.

I think most would think it was quite bizarre. I'd love to control crossbow-wielding Amy though.
Theres so much that could be done in the Fleetway continuity. So much!
1. Imagine a fantasy RPG where Tails has to deal with the goblins in the Naneless Zone
2. Archery with Amy, switching between crossbow and longbow
3. Ironman style levels with Shortfuse, with armour that can improved or customized by Tekno depending on need
4. Amy & Tekno adventuring shenanigans in time and space
5. Plunder seeking to undo his curse
6. And of course - a spin on Sonic where the goal is NOT to over-rely on crazy Super Sonic, or you get the "bad" ending
And thats not even counting unique enemies like Zachary, Brutus and the Drakon Empire.
I'd love to play a game based on the Fleeteay continuity, and I hope it can be a reality
I don't hate Fleetway Amy by any stretch but I don't really jive with this idea she is some massively better interpretation than the Amy we got in the games. She just comes off as a very different character altogether.

They made Amy a badass way before sonic adventure did (i mean she was still girly but also a badass)
At first I didn't like Amy in Sonic Adventure due to my affinity for Fleetway. I've warmed to her over time though. I can see that she is both badass and girly.

While she is definitely obsessed with sonic she is not an abusive stalker and only Is portrayed that way in spin offs (excluding heroes) in sonic adventure she finds him ACCIDENTALLY and in sa2 she finds him to free him from prison. Also I may add that while she is obsessed with sonic it Is not by far her whole personality. She is bubbly (I think that’s the word) can see the good in others, is kind, extremely keen to help, is adventure loving and is willing to step in to danger ,even if she’s scared, in order to help somone in need. It’s really a shame that people hate game Amy especially but like fleetway Amy despite the fact they seem to share similar traits but dialled up or down slightly.
I always preferred Amy old design, to her more modern design !

What i think is pretty interesting about Fleetway Sonic is that it's much more closer to the game, due to authors and artist trying to explain game logic or adapt and interpret plots of old, pretty abstract, videogame stories
omg, i love this amy now. Now I finally know what the Techno and Classic Amy fan art is about. Amy being in a different type of clothing suits her as well, but of course when adapting into games and cartoons you need an iconic way of letting the viewer know what character is which, for marketing. But still, thank you for this video, I am now going to ebay dive for fleetaway comics.

It'd be cool as well since the sonic movie is all about references, if they were to put Amy in it last minute it would be in her fleetaway classic or regular classic form so she can distinct from sonic. I honestly never liked her bobbed quill look. I'm not sure if they made her quills like that because it was a popular style at the time or what.
Growing up with Fleetway, whilst I didn't question character absences in the Mega Drive Sonic games, I was shocked seeing the canon portrayal of characters such as Amy in Sonic Adventure. Amy's Fleetway design is super cool and I do like her development as a character, but I'm also fond of the sweet yet comedic focused approach of the Adventure/Sonic X and beyond era of Amy.
5:36 - In particular, whilst the crossbow is super distinct and cool, the Piko Piko hammer feels far more natural within the role of a fast-paced platformer, especially in how it's been utilised for extra momentum and height in Sonic games.
Fleetway Amy's archery skills are particularly fun to contemplate when you consider that, over in America's Archie Sonicverse, Amy is the cousin of the Robin Hood-inspired Mobian king "Rob o' the Hedge".

I disagree. This versions of Amy isn't Bad. But the best? No way.
I'd never want Amy to lose the hammer. It suits her straightforward personality and courage. She's not the strongest or fastest, but she's still the first to charge right into battle as a brave brawler.
That said, it'd be cool if she were an expert in all kinds of weaponry to show she's taken the time and effort to master external weapons since she doesn't have the natural speed, strength, and flight that the main three have. Conjuring weapons out of thin air fits her subtle magical abilities, too. Forget Shadow's guns. Amy was the original weapons expert.
That'd be really awesome honestly, and it could theoretically give her and Tails a stronger bond with each other (and by association Sonic too) if he were to say, be making experimental weapons and combat training courses for her to practice and train with, or even just buffing weapons Amy already has strong interest in. It could be a natural progression of her romantic interests in Sonic and the want to be around to be able to help others, and temper it into developing skills, strengthening friendships and bonds between Sonic and Tails and herself, and in turn Mastering skills and arts no one else in the group has and being able to take down enemies without the natural abilities other members of the group have.
And on top of weaponry, her interest in magical arts and the dabbling in Tarot readings could be expanded on and used to predict incidents in advanced to counteract, or prepare for whatever happens.

Amy is probably one of the most underutilised characters in the Sonic franchise. Her relationshipwith Sonic is often just the butt of the joke, rather than the setup even though they can have great chemistry together

When I first saw the original Amy design from CD after being used to the current one, it looked odd. It seems much better to me now after a few years though.

Huh… learning about this, honestly it sounds like the people at idw took inspiration from these comics with Amy’s leadership role.
This video made me appreciate Amy a lot more and makes me want to check out the Sonic the Comic comicbooks! I am someone who does not really care for Amy due to how they portrayed her for so long in the mainline series (as Sonic's obsessive fangirl). The recent-ish switch to make her more of a character who stands out on her own and not all crazy over Sonic like she used to be felt like it kinda came out of nowhere, so my opinion on her did not really shift with this seemingly sudden change. However, I think if the mainline series was in line with her Fleetway counterpart, she maybe would have ended up being one of my favorite characters! Just from this one video, I can definitely agree that Fleetway Amy _is_ the best iteration of Amy!
I think the concept art for Amy in Sonic Prime is inspired by her Fleetway appearance. Which makes sense since the show is targeted towards long time fans including those who grew up reading Sonic the Comic. And giving her a crossbow is an interesting idea.
I'm too nostalgic for Sonic Adventure 1 Amy's design.

Anyone who thinks IDW Amy is a rip-off of Sally has clearly never read the Fleetway Comics. I'm glad she was being treated better in this series, compared to what they were doing with her in the Archie Comics.
A couple of corrections:
1. The first appearance of Amy's Piko Piko Hammer was in the Sonic the Fighters arcade game.
2. I'm pretty sure the village was Emerald Hill Zone, not Green Hill Zone.

Fleetway Amy is a very underrated version of the character, the crossbow is pretty cool imo and would like if it somehow made it into the games.
This video was fantastic, and a great deep-dive into my personal favourite version of Amy! Fleetway seemed to have a knack for making some fantastic versions of pre-existing characters (most notably with Knuckles and Robotnik), and Amy's obviously no expection to that
Actually Amy’s Piko Piko Hammer first appeared in Sonic The Fighters.
Fleetway Amy as always been my favourite version of Amy in both design and character.
I also grew up with STC, and I absolutely loved Amy. The Fleetway comics version of Amy is the best version of her by a long shot. I also thought she was older than many of the other versions are.
I'm probably one of the minority who enjoyed the ring of eternity arc, mainly for the variety (I believe the Hercules story was also the one that ended with Amy telling Tekno she really enjoyed the food)
Amy's origin story did give me a little theory as to why she is such a competent archer. Hedgehogs aren't known for their good vision normally, so I was thinking that perhaps Amy's vision was heightened as a result of the reaction. Having such a change to her vision might also have explained why she wasn't quite as heroic in her first appearance, as she might have been getting used to it. A flimsy theory, admittedly, but one I enjoy.
Wow I'm really digging Fleetway's version of Amy a lot! Now I kind of wish I had grown up besides this and game Amy because I find her and Tekno's chemistry really great and refreshing
It would've been cool if in the Mario and Sonic at the Olympics games gave Amy the best accuracy at the archery minigames as a reference to Fleetway.

Also, if Amy is ever playable again, they'd make so many people happy by including the plaid skirt/t-shirt fit as DLC or something. I mean, they've incorporated Knuckles' hat from the OVA into the games more than once (I really just wish they'd just make it part of his official design, lmao) as well as Tangle and Whisper, Longclaw, movie Sonic... Don't forget Amy's Sonic X Dress from Episode 15 that was just as iconic. That said the plaid skirt was great for Amy & really we need to play as her more. You should have mentioned Jewel as she is the Flight member of Team Tangle.
I've never been a huge Amy fan, but I felt quite emotional watching this. I never realised how much of an absolute legend Fleetway Amy was until quite recently- she's absolutely my favourite incarnation of her- and it was so cathartic listening to you discussing it in details.
I've always thought Fleetway's Amy design was the cutest to me! I like how it isn't OVERLY feminine (yes there is of course the fact that she's wearing a plaid skirt and the heart t-shirt, but compare that to modern Amy's dress with a underskirt shot that really shouldn't be there for a young female character 😖) and the different hair style really makes Amy appear more rebellious and spunky!
She still looks like a cutesy punkrock schoolgirl in the Fleetway adaptation & really the plaid skirt is more feminine than what I see girls wear on a regular basis. Lisa Ortiz was the best VA for Amy for that cute, spunky performance & I have to admit I headcanon her to have that voice when reading Sonic the Comic.
Even though I love modern Amy and or just Amy in general being portrayed as feminine I really like this look for her too. And thank God I'm not the only one bothered by the upskirts. The fact that her model still has this problem in like generations...yeah

Besides the blink & you miss it upskirts are realistic in a series that people used to love for the game physics. You clearly care more about this than Amy herself does.

From how it looks, the lead writer was right to try to squash the "Amy" idea 'cause she sound like a "Mary Sue". When it gets to the point when she is better than everyone else-- all the time, then what is the point of everyone else? When you over shadow the hero of the book, then why should I even read?

I love this Amy, I was talking to someone about her, but I'm bad at explaining things, so I looked on TH-cam to see if anyone talked about her, all I found was this channel, and I so enjoy watching these as they bring back such good memories X3

Honestly, I love Amy in general. Specifically Modern. But I will say I can't get enough of the classic her. She's such a cute, spunky badass girl. She's feminine but a tomboy at heart. Not only is Fleetway my favorite design for her but it was an interesting twist on her character, much better than what they have had going for her in recent years imo. This comic was weird but unique and it did Amy way more justice than Archie ever cared to do for her anyway.
Veteran fleetway reader here, yeah I remember Amy being portrayed pretty well. She was never my fave character but did a good job at holding the fort down and I always considered her the level headed one

What I like about this Amy was that she was not only crafty she was also never there for the popularity. Her only focus was earning Sonic's acknowledgment and being a heroine. There's one issue where Sonic is fighting an seemingly undefeatable foe and it's Amy is finds out the weakness.
But instead of beating them and taking the credit of defeating a foe Sonic seemingly couldn't. She instead frames it as Sonic's victory. She did it not only to help Sonic's rep and maintaining his place as a beacon of hope. But also to keep Sonic's pride from being wounded. Sonic may have never openly returned Amy's affections but he definitely had a good future partner in the pink hedgehog within the Fleetway continuity.
Always did enjoy Amy in this incarnation when reading the comics way back, it felt like she fit to the story and added to it with how they worked with her characterisation. Gotta admit even before I knew what 'shipping' was couldn't help but see Amy and Tekno being a pairing with how they interacted and always had each others backs.
Personally I only shipped them platonically way to be honest

I like fleetway Amy because she loves sonic still, but I’d also way more independent, she‘s like the Samus of the sonic universe
Fleetway Amy is definitely a cool character, but I do still prefer the more adorable yet still brave Amy we got from Adventure onwards in the games. Fleetway's design isn't quite my thing, not that fitting for her. Tho I'll admit her and Tekno are cute (although if you ask me her and Blaze are the cuter couple).
As for the crossbow, I prefer the hammer. Another comment sums it up best, it's a versatile weapon that makes Amy a wild card. It has enormous power, allows for acrobatics, can create tornados and is overall both awesome and adorable.
Overall Amy's game self actually isn't too far off from her Fleetway appearance. While she still does have a crush on Sonic, it's downplayed nowadays and she's more independent from Adventure onwards, even becoming the forth member of Team Sonic and forming Team Rose. Regardless Amy is a great character and one of my favorites regardless of universe. . .excluding the Dimps games. They just don't know how to write Amy well.
Personally I feel like Fleetway Amy lacks personality (And yes I read whole STC. And STC-O). She's a little too perfect.
She's lacks super powers but keeps ups with the boys thanks to smarts, toughness and bravery.
That's Sally Acorn, Black Widow, Gwen Tennyson. Good company, sure, but it's a stereotype in which Amy doesn't stand out.
I preferred her at beginning when she had crush on Sonic. It gave her playful edge. And Archie/IDW is eveything Fletway Amy is, plus kindness and emphaty. She's the heart of the Sonic Friends, without loosing her strenght.
Used to love these comics when I was a kid. They went off sale while I was still going and never understood why. But seeing all the shots of these pages all these years later is bringing back awesome memories. My mum used to buy me the comic every other Friday from our local Morrisons, and I would read it while I ate my chippy dinner. Good times!!
I've somehow never even heard of this version of Amy before. Every time I saw the non-adventure hairstyle, I just assumed it was some old Sonic CD fanart. I'm stunned that we had a good version of Amy all these years, hidden away. And that sadly she's gone now. Modern Amy even when written better, feels like a inferior character... But, if they ever do something as insane as having Amy and Sonic get together and have a child, then I feel like ignoring all the problems that would have, design-wise, Fleetway Amy would be perfect to use for their daughter. As for Amy, of course I love her in STC, but I really like her in Boom too. A mix of the two would be the ideal Amy IMO

I really wish they went with this iteration of Amy as opposed to the joke that exists today. Only version of Amy I ever liked was in STC.
I didn't know much about this Amy and I have to agree this version of her is much more interesting but I'm also partial to the alternative/grunge/punk look she has going on. On her hair, I'm pretty torn. I do like the punk look but she looks cute with the spines down as well. In my opinion, her hair changing depending on what she's doing/mood would be kind of neat. If I had to choose though, the liberty spike look is a bit cooler.
I like also that her character had some growth, losing her immense obsession with Sonic as she grew and got stronger herself. I think it's neat when a character has that kind of change and in the end it is a very nice role model for girls (or anyone) to look up to.

Did you ever read through the official online continuation over at Sonic The Comic Online? It got some actually pretty slick issues, including an actual proper ending to the series made by the people who originally worked on the original comic.
The art in it can range between being incredible to being a bit iffy to downright bad here and there, but then thats how it was with the original comic series too.
She's alright. I like this, but I think the main difference is that she's a true protagonist in STC vs being a traditional side character (despite what Sonic fans believe) in the game canon. Development requires focus, and she's only been focused on in 3 games, and most of her development happens in her 1st (SA1). Devolving into a trope with less focus each game. This made her change in character in IDW random and unprovoked. Had she obtained the proper development to show how she gained the ability to lead a militia, her character in the beginning of IDW would have made sense. This sort of goes for Knuckles in Forces too in some capacity. Yes, his tribe was of warring people, but he had no knowledge of them based on SA1. That basically leaves Sonic and Tails - and I'd assume Tails was the original leader based off the SA2 mission (I won't count Sonic X where he was the captain of their....warship)
If you only see her development in SA1, you missed. Amy had a team in Heroes, the reason she keeps Cream and Big united is through her own attitude, otherwise they could've just given up after the first stage. She's not a strategist but the way she leads is by getting people to listen to her.

as someone who doesn’t wanna read the fleetway comics, I love these videos. those comics are definitely fun to learn about due to the different takes on characters. what’s your opinion on IDW Amy taking on a leadership role at times again?
The first meeting with Fabian Vane was also the last time Amy stopped wore skirts before moving onto trousers as she had one panel where she dodged an attack and the angle gave us what should've been an upskirt shot but the comic censored it by doing the heavy shadow effect to cover the entire area kinda like how some old 3d game sprite have the legs come from the bottom of the skirt rather than coming out of the skirt.
Defiantly a fleetway Amy fan. Find her game appearances jaring as I grew up on these comics.

while this version certainly sound interesting, she also a completely different character, the crossbow would come off as weird since it just doesn't fit her game portrayal, and I honestly find the characterization off, I don't mind the obsession getting toned down but not completely erased, her Tomboy personality is fine, and honestly, SEGA could play with the sister like relationship with her and Cream similar to Sonic and Tails, but again, everyone got sabotaged in the games during the 2010s, also, I do like the Origin story it gave Sonic and Eggman, it connects the more

So therefore, the fleetway version is an only version of Amy to not have Piko Piko hammer at all (not counting sonic CD game which was before fleetway)

I was wondering if you would ever consider doing a video like this for the Omni Viewer. I find him to be one of the more mysterious characters in STC. We never really find out how he became friends with Sonic or Chaotix and what his origins are. I'm assuming he was 'built' by someone or something.
He has very similar traits to the Ring of Eternity, perhaps they were constructed by the same entity.
As a kid, I kind of imagined that Ommi Viewer was the literal TV screen that we as gamers viewed Sonic and his friends on during the Mega Drive era, kinda like the cameraman Lakitu from Mario 64.

Fun fact, Sonic the Comic Online has an issue written by Nigel called Exit: Sonic. It acts as a finale to the series. It states that Amy and Tekno did get together and started a family. They even name their kid after Johnny.
Just WHAT?! Amy and Tekno?! That’s impossible because they are both girls, so how can they possibly have a kid named after Johnny?! That doesn’t make any senses unless you meant that they adopted a kid named after Johnny. There’s no way that a woman with a woman can possibly have biological kids together!

I'm currently rereading StC, partially due to your videos, partially for the nostalgia. Debated whether or not to watch this due to spoilers, but ultimately I like your character videos enough to not worry about spoilers!

I do wish modern Amy could be written a bit more like StC Amy. We saw some of her leadership skills in the IDW series but modern Amy could do with more of that and less Sonic fangirling.

I honestly think IDW have a good idea on how to write Amy to the point where its kinda rare for us to see her fangirling over sonic
If you're not enjoying it by issue 40 then I wouldn't hold much hope for it to "get good", it had totally found its feet by then. It gets better but not that much better!
