Imagine if Light from Death Note suddenly broke down crying in the end, right before killing L, and said, “No, I don’t want Misa to find another man! I only want her to think about me! I also don’t know why I killed all those criminals, I think it was to unite you all against me!” And this guy defends it with “Well Light is just a teenager, it’s okay if he inexplicably goes against his entire character and motives, that’s how they are.” These people defending 139 are ridiculous.

Point is you can’t justify characters suddenly forgetting all their motives and acting pathetic and whiny like Eren in 139 did because “well he’s just a teenager, that’s how they act.” Hell the characters in Last Airbender are 12-13 and were way more consistent and emotionally mature than Eren. Same with Light. Same with hundreds of other teen anime characters. Age has nothing to do with it. It’s just a cop out.

After arguing with them for days, it just kinda blurs altogether. There's the rare reasonable person who likes the ending and actually has some good points but more often than not, the majority I've met more or less just liked whatever crap they were given as long as it came from Isayama.
(I've said this once, I'll say it again anyway) So much so that sometimes it feels like that a lot of the 139 defenders tried to rewrite the entire series to fit the ending (maybe that's why AnR Eren is so foreign to them lmao). And now with this interview, they thought 139 haters would feel embarassed for being "wrong" about the "real Eren", but nope, it just pissed them off even more and more or less lost their respect in Isayama as a writer. Because apparently, Isayama just failed in his execution of the "whiny Eren" he always imagined and accidentally made him anything but that. Idk.

In my opinion Ymir is definitively the worst character in the series, even more disappointing than the EMA trio. Why? Because she basically turned Eren and Mikasa into her playthings and got so many people killed for it. This fking girl deserves a worse fate than Eren, not just for the rumbling, but for the suffering of everyone throughout history at the hands of the titans just because she had a weird fetish for her abuser. I also blame Eren's breakdown as a character on her. Why tf is he suddenly so clueless and pathetic when he showed such determination before? I blame Ymir for mindfking Eren to the point that he can't even think straight anymore. She basically used him as a puppet and bastardized his life, feelings, and dreams. I absolutely hate this woman. The worst part is she got what she wanted and then poofed and left all the Eldians to die in the future. What a clown. Human life means nothing to her compared to her stockholm syndrome.
She was far more sympathetic of a character before but then the story turned her into a sadistic and manipulative weirdo with nonsensical motivations and ridiculously infinite power which she uses to drag all of the characters down to hell with her.

When will people realize that only justifying and making sense of a story doesn't automatically make it a good story, there is more to it. Payoff, conclusion, motivation, character depth, depth of the conflict, the way characters react and solve the conflict, progression of the plot, character development, there are so many things to make it a good story. "He's a teenager" or "He's just a human" doesn't justify Eren's action in 139 at all. The mental gymnastics is insane.
I think the main problem is the misconception that "filling in blanks"/ not giving all the answers is a sign of being "deep".
There's a fine line between leaving subtext and open ended questions for the reader to figure out the hidden true meaning, and leaving plot holes for readers to fill in for themselves.
Many people, (including myself sometimes) don't see or don't care enough to see the difference. Labelling anything that "makes you think" as well written.
@@LeCatization Everyone sees things differently. That's why there are entire classes dedicated to the tearing apart and analysis of works of fiction. Doctorates are achieved writing papers doing exactly this. The people shaking and crying about this ending speak as though they are objective truth, and they're not. They're children who lack emotional intelligence and the inability to comprehend anything outside of, "But *I* wanted *this* and *I* didn't get *this* so fuck *you*."
@@nachgeben By that definition objectivity doesn't exist when judging fiction. While that is true to some degree, there are commonly agreed measures to rate stories on the quality of the narrative.
The ending is a mess in it's delivery, Eren's motivations, objectives and powers shouldn't be as vague and inconsistent as they were made out to be, especially since his abilities so heavily influence how his plan is executed. If you think that this ambiguity was to aid the narrative, what exactly was the message Isayama tried to convey by making us unable to definitively know these things? Even the people who liked the ending can't come to a consensus on what exactly Eren's goal and limit of his abilities were. I don't think this speculation aids the narrative in any way like other ambiguous works, so please enlighten me if it does.
The people who support the ending also aren't any better when it comes comprehension. Most supporters I've seen either don't care about the actual plot, or would accept anything with the logic that "it's realistic" or "it can't please everyone" to dismiss valid criticisms.
I was expecting a story about conflict and the human condition, but the ending gave me a forced message about "romantic" love, re-contextualizing everything to make Mikasa the focus. I guess I'm just another child with unreasonable expectations, I should have known better that SnK was first and foremost the romance story of Eren and Mikasa since that's what the ending is forcing down our throats.

2. All the other countries may have more people, but that doesn't speak for any key resources that they would need to launch a war. If you have 100 people in a room, and 1 of them has a machine gun, 99 of them might try shit, but they're going to lose.
3. The Rumbling started at shores at various countries. That means vital harbors in a 1940s-tech world were destroyed. Harbors can be both civilian and military. Vital military installations are set close to shores often for access to the oceans. Without these vital installations, 400 million people aren't doing shit to 1 million people who are running at full capacity.
It takes just a modicum of real world understanding. Go outside and touch some grass, weeb.

Armin: You know, we didn't have to come and save you guys. As a matter of fact, we would've benefitted from just letting Eren wipe you guys out completely. We CHOSE to put ourselves at risk to stop Eren and save you guys because we believe your people have just as much of a right to live in this world as we do even though all you've ever done is try to wipe us out. Even now, we're willing to put ourselves at your mercy in the hopes we can stop all this senseless bloodshed but the choice ultimately lies with you. We can either work together to put all this hatred behind us so that our children can be saved from the vicious cycle we've been trapped in for so long or we can continue to kill each other like animals. I mainly apart of the anime japanese fanbase. Majority of the fanbase hates chapter 139 alot and pointed out the contradictive flaws of the climax.
- Eren bullshit romance with Mikasa, that was never foreshadowed in the japanese version of the story.
- How the rumbling contradicts Eren previous motivations, since his genocide of 80% of the world was unnecessary. Eren Yeager cared about his country and people he fights. 139 made him a unsympathetic psychopath that doesn't have the decency for human life.

When the final chapter came out Japanese fans literally called out Isayama bullshit.
- Assassinating Eren and Armin character development.
- Killing off Zeke who embodied freedom itself, majority of the fanbase agreed that Zeke death was poorly handle, Eren embodying his philosophy downplays his efforts as villain.
Majority of the fanbase lost all respect to Isayama writing, no matter how deep and philosophical it was on ethical spectrum. It broke many of those established.
Even before chapter 139 came out, Eren in the time skip already accepted responsibility of every generational problem his father and brother did, while not being like them.

eren was a monster who murdered millions of innocent people but the reason why i still shipped EH but not EM (apart from the fact that EM was designed to be platonic/familial love) was that eren basically picked historia over the rest of the world meanwhile he was a complete jerk to mikasa throughout the series. eren could have saved paradis and have his freedom with the 50y plan too but he refused to sacrifice historia. it's confirmed over and over again even in 138.
we'll never know why historia was so important to him (probably because AnR was the original ending) but the fact remains that EH is a better ship because eren actually showed concern and respect for historia and he was even shown smiling at her a couple of times, meanwhile the nicest thing he did to mikasa was saving her from her kidnappers. but even that scene is portrayed as traumatic to mikasa with isayama describing it as mikasa losing her innocence even though all she wants is a quiet life where she and her family are safe. yams said that mikasa wants to go back to the girl she was and the life she had before that incident.
There are stories that use better the concept of beings that exists in the past, present and future at the same time, I am just done listening to a podcast that uses the exact concept in a better way, and you can feel and believe these beings perceive time differently than us. Eren never gave any indication that he perceived time in such way other than a throwaway line in 139.
The podcast is called Alice isn't Dead, if anyone is interested. It even has an ending that is similar to AoT's ending in concept, but much better executed.

You have to understand that Eren is such a failed Erekose from the "eternal warrior" Michael Moorcock's story, on which Isayama relied heavily. He could not give a conclusive ending, as in this book, because he had a contract for shonen, which cannot be only for adults. Isayama just used the best of Erekose themes to cast the bait and get the public, then end up sloppy for money.

Nothing on Earth can convince me that Eren had any sort of romantic feelings for Mikasa. People claim that Eren sent Mikasa that paths dream, but that hasn't ever even been confirmed, and also makes zero sense considering Mikasa is an Ackerman. It's pure headcanon.
The problem with a these "breakdown" videos regarding the ending and Eren/Mikasa is that more than half of these videos pass headcanons/inferences as pure canon fact. It's so disingenuine.

Now, we know that Ymir is trying to peep into her mind which is why she have headaches. I have two questions: Why Levi have headache if the Ackerman bond doesn't exist and Why can Founding Titan affect the mind of an Ackerman? We are told that Ackerman are impervious to mind wiping and mind alterations.

I like anime uproar but saying the reason eren was crying over mikasa was because he was 19 and was human, Yet eren clearly has the mental strength to handle the fact that he destroyed 8/10 of the population. I know that eren was crying once in a story about doing this and I know eren cared about his friends but the weight of having millions upon millions of people dead because of you is something that no man can handle and yes he may care about mikasa but there was no romantic tension between the two. The kiss was so random, for me atleast, Isayama didn’t really make it that known. Just because they are opposite genders doesn’t mean they have to be a couple. I think the manga showed it well with the infamous freedom-panel that Eren has to regress into a childlike-state of mind to cope with what he's doing. He's crushed by his guilt and admits he deserves to die for his actions when he thinks clearly about it.

True there wasn't a lot of tension shown but it's because Eren knows his fate through future memories so starting some kind of relationship with Mikasa when he knows she has to kill him soon would be very cruel. His romantic interest was hinted at through flashbacks and memories/memory-shards but he can't act on it. That's the tragedy of the situation.

He expressed his friends/loved ones are the most important people to him, and he let go of his personal anger towards people like Reiner because he understood they were doing what they thought was right, just as he was. He would let the world burn for them, and is why when he could stop them from stopping him, he didn't. He never took away free will, even if his own was debatably not present.
There's a moment that's emphasized when Eren snaps. It's when he's sitting there, waiting and viewing a parliamentary meeting, so they can talk to a group fighting for the rights of Subjects of Ymir. Here, a representative of this group declares they're "Victims of Eldians, just like all of us--but not those Island Devils, no sir!"
You can see Eren never wanted to do what he did, but he realized that the visions he saw were indeed the only way to keep his loved ones safe. Not just from the world, but the titan curse.
Unfortunately, the whole 'to fight monsters you need to become a monster' schtick is valid here and is seen many times in fiction and reality. You might achieve your goals, but you'll lose yourself along the way, and as your mind slips deeper into being a monster, you may forget why you did this, or why you did that. All you'll know is if you've gotten closer to or farther from your goal.
I don't see anything in Eren's progression as OOC or as not achieving anything. We just don't all agree with how much he truly achieved, and if there was a better way or not. And that's always been the point, hasn't it? Was there a better way to anything? What if Bertholdt, Annie and Reiner had gone home after Marcel? What if they had spoken to Marco instead of what they did to him? What if Grisha had never taken his sister outside Liberio? What if, what if, who was actually in the right? Who was actually in the wrong? Was there a better way, etc?
And really, in the world as it was pre-Rumbling, WAS there a better way?
It;s a damn shame that popular TH-camrs rather be the former and defend trash manga endings so they dont wanna get attacked by his subs who liked it. A damn shame.....

Anime Uproar and Foxen Anime are awful right now. Anime uproar is literally speculating throughout this entire video and clearly in denial while Foxen is clearly an agent for AoT. I've lost a ton of respect for both of them!
I'd just like to make a point here:
There's this really obscure OVA from the 80's called MD Geist. It's a story about a genetically engineered super-soldier called Geist -- the guy is a complete and utter sociopath and isn't even remotely better than the main villain. For reference, just picture Doomguy if he was a complete asshole who directed his murderous rage towards humans instead of demons.
Right, so near the end after having killed the villain, Geist decides to unleash a robotic army upon the world which results in the near-complete annihilation of mankind. Why? Because this way he can keep fighting enemies for a long while. Basically, he obliterates humanity just to be an asshole. *HE OBLITERATES HUMANITY. JUST TO BE AN ASSHOLE.*
Just to drive the point home, the story ends with a shot of Geist sporting a psychotic grin on his face, as if he can't wait to get started.
Right, you get all that? Now here's the thing: apart from being relentlessly grim and nihilistic, the story itself is laughably poorly written with terrible voice acting, cheesy dialogue and abysmal animation...yet the story still makes more sense than what Isayama came up with -- and the reason for that is because of consistency. Considering everything Geist did up to the end, having him destroy humanity for such a petty reason was not at all out-of-character for him -- the man's a mass-murdering sociopath for goodness' sake, slaughtering people left and right with a big goofy grin on his face and he's so obsessed with killing that he outright ignores the advanced of his "love interest" -- a better word would be "harpy" but I digress.
My point is that an intentionally depressing ending is easier to accept if it feels like a logical conclusion to the story's course.
Fans were fully prepared to accept Eren destroying humanity because we understood he had no other option left and everything in the story was leading up to such an event...yet Isayama chose not to have his story reach a logical conclusion even though he had major characters killed off for minor reasons, as if to drive the point home how nihilistic the whole thing is. He decided to cop out and deliver an esoteric happy ending that feels completely unearned and ironically renders all the deaths and struggles pointless...and people are making excuses for it, as if the story was meant to end the way it did. It's like watching a man run a perfectly fine marathon only for him to go "fuck it" and intentionally stumble and fall 100 meters before the finish line...and then have people say he was meant to do that. Bollocks.
The comparison to the Geist OVA is interesting but I don't really get your point regarding how it's having a better conclusion than AoT. Eren too wants to destroy the world cause he's an asshole and it's in-character for him to do the rumbling.
There were foreshadowings that hinted that the rumbling would happen, yes, and it was shown that deep down Eren wants to complete the rumbling (destroy all his enemies),yes, BUT there were no indications that he would be successful and actually destroy the whole world (quite the opposite, because there were indications that he would be stopped). It was not a cop out by Isayama.
What I was trying to say is that a depressing ending that's thematically appropriate and logically conclusive is much easier to accept than an artificially happy one.
Take Game of Thrones for instance -- after season 8 ended, many fans agreed that even having everyone die at the hands of the Night King would've been better, if only because it would've saved them all from terrible writing.
If that's not enough, then let me put it like this:
The video game Nier is one of the saddest and most depressing games in existence and it pretty much ends with humanity going extinct. The thing is, the game is not nihilistic because its protagonist are flawed but sympathetic and even the enemies have sympathetic motives. Another thing is that all the drama and conflict in it is the result of tragic misunderstandings rather than nihilistic spite, which makes the ending even sadder because of this.
And just to be super nihilistic, the video game Armored Core: For Answer takes place on Earth that has been ravaged and turned into an uninhabitable wasteland by a bunch of corporations waging war on one another. To spare you the details, you're given the option to either protect the corporations and maintain the status quo -- the same one that caused this mess in the first place -- or commit mass murder to force the rest of humanity to leave the planet...or go on a genocida killing spree and put everyone out of their misery. It really says something about the state of the world when the latter option feels like the most rational course of action you can take, if only because it offers a permanent solution to humanity's plight.
By contrast, AoT has always been extremely grim and even nihilistic at times...and its world has proven to be such an awful place that Eren's decision to kill off the rest of humanity actually comes off as a perfectly rational response to everything he's been forced to put up with. The world will never make peace with Paradis; Eren knows this and we know that too. The story never portrayed his actions as being morally right but rather tried to make a statement on how terrible the world must be that we could fully understand Eren's decision to put a permanent stop to this cycle of hatred by killing everyone.
The ending tries to make it seem as though peace has finally become possible when in reality, nothing's changed; 80% of humanity is dead and the rest of them still hate Paradis, now more than ever. Reiner and Annie never paid for their crimes and the story pretends like everything is hunky dory now that Eren has practically destroyed most of humanity and its infrastructure. Over at TV Tropes we'd call this an Esoteric Happy Ending -- an ending only the autor considers to be happy, in spite of all the implications to the contrary.
@@supereldinho Okay I think what you're getting at here is that you think that a full rumbling ending would've fit the tone of the story overall better. I don't necessarily agree but it's hard to argue against because it's a somewhat subjective matter.
I do think that kind of ending could work if it was built towards, but I don't think the last 2-3 arcs were headed that direction. There was too much emphasis on "both sides" and "the world isn't black and white". The animosity between the two parties was caused by ignorance and not actually knowing the other side. Marleyans that visited Paradis and lived there(Reiner, Gabi, Niccolo, Magath) largely emphasized with the people on the island, the survey corps members who visited Marley were immediately against Eren destroying the outside world. The rise of yeagerists showed that the people of Paradis are no better than the outside world, they're totally okay with killing people they don't know if it guarantees their survival and oppressing non-eldians in their homeland. I'd find it weird if they were just rewarded in the end without consequences.
Edit: I still agree that the tone of the last chapter feels a bit off.
Please make a counter video exactly like this after watching Jake Retake's video, the dude used to be an anime only until he decided to read the manga after S4 part 1 ended. He used to be a great thinker and I used to enjoy his reactions to AoT episodes. But now for some reason in his manga review video he made he's been too soft and is just ignoring all the flaws and doesn't even bother to look critically in certain scenes, instead all he does is keep saying "I don't see any problem with the ending, I think it's fine". I have no hopes for the anime onlies, I'm pretty sure they will dig this ending because they are all hyped and biased af.

There are 2 kinds of freedom, essential freedom which is freedom to enact choices and existential freedom, which is “freedom of being” Both of this freedom is what Eren is fighting for: Essential freedom- freedom outside the walls, being able to live his life and explore, and free from people getting other people’s freedom and Existential freedom- which is Eren’s “I was born into this world”.
That is why destiny and fate doesn’t apply in the story. It was not even introduced until the last minute. The story is not even about living your destiny but living out your freedom (choice and existence).
Also the immature aspect? This is attack on titan. This is a dark fantasy, psychological show not a rom com.

I've noticed that when editing videos, when you barely see noise markers on the videoclip you've applied, it's adviced to at least raise overall volume of that clip so it can be more audible. The thing that separates eldians from the rest of the world is the fact that they can turn into Titans. Every single one can be used as a weapon. It's not a retcon lol, Eren was deliberately lying, that was made clear in a later chapter. Recontextualization doesn't mean retcon. Kenny and Levi were never shown to have headaches and they're also not dependant on the 'Ackerman bond'

The argument I hate the most is that Eren is just an emotional 19 year old kid.
People forget about how he murdered 2 men when he was 8. People forget how he joined the military at a young age. People forget how he holds this god like power in a world where only a selected few have it. People forget how he can literally change the past in the right circumstances. People forget he killed 80% of the world.
How is Eren your typical emotional 19 year old who breaks down because his “crush” will live a life without him, when he himself chose to not even continue living.
Exactly these arguments basically pretend previous arcs didn't happen that completely contradicts this claim people are looking for every excuse in the book
Being extremely violent and being emotional aren't mutually exclusive, quite the opposite actually. Eren is very emotional throughout the whole story, for various reasons. A lot of the time Eren commits acts of violence precisely because he is emotional. In my opinion the entire point of Eren's character is to showcase how dangerous it is to burden an evidently very childish and emotional person with power and high expectations.
He didn't really choose not to continue living, the curse of Ymir would've got him in 3 or so years anyway. His choice was to spend his last remaining years securing a better future for his loved ones instead of living them out spending time with them. He would've been seperated from Mikasa and everyone else soon enough either way.

@@thatoneblackdude3333 Well that's kinda a different argument than the one I was responding too and I partially agree; in chapter 139 both Eren and Armin are way too light on Eren having killed 80% of humanity, they are both just like "yeah nothing we can do about that now". Ideally there should have been another emotional breakdown focusing on Eren's genoicide. I still believe that him being regretful about not being able to spend time with Mikasa and his other friends makes sense as that's part of his character and has been foreshadowed eg. in ch130. Yes, it undermines his horrible crimes, but Eren is not a person with strong self-reflection, he's a selfish piece of shit.
Armin offering Eren a second chance at life doesn't magically remove the 13-year curse of Ymir.
Letting the allience kill him to end the curse is best course of action as it directly increases the lifespan of Armin, Reiner, Annie, Falco (and Historia and her children probably as well) by a great amount. He foresaw in his future memories that his friends would survive most of it so he was willing to take the risk.
I wouldn't call killing two people that murdered a little girls parents in front of her and wanted to rape the body in front of the kid murder. It's killing in defense of others.

it's important to have a good principles and clear logical way of thinking than having thousands of subscribers, stories should be simple and clear not complex and vague.

The end can not be 'killing the world and then everyone lives happily ever after', this kind of ending is impossible to be published as a phenomenal manga. IMO Isayama seems to have given up discussing the rationality of the rumbling and twisted the core of the story into a romance, probably he found he can't neither justify nor deny the rumbling reliably. Pooping on Eren's face is the easiest way to end this topic.
Eren has the reasons not to launch genocide if Isayama didn't want to. We saw Marley was also oppressing many others nations, which could be the allies of Paradis. But that needs tons of political scenarios to make sense, which probably beyond Isayama's ability. Meanwhile, the 'eternal ethnic hatred' and the existence of the Tybus family are clearly contradictory; in other words, this narrative can be dissolved. But building a new narrative after breaking the topic of 'Paradis vs world' is also complicated. Most importantly, Eren is not a character without empathy, we saw that many times. In the short, Isayama gives the foundations for a peaceful ending(not talk no jutsu) but quits and shits.

I predicted the ending like months ago on a Foxen vid called "Eren New Freedom Titan!"... It's still there and was getting replies to it once the ending hit... The thing is, I think Isayama meant for this ending to be FAR more drawn out and explained, but just did not give a damn to actually do it, or just copped out completely, I can't see it any other way... It's just done BADLY... You can literally sense the "Not giving a damn" build up in the last 3-4 chapters... I'm also convinced a few of these "TH-camRS" had been reading my comments over the months because I always posted on "readsnk" during leaks with my dang theories... It's like they pulled crap right out of my comments at points... Here's what I wrote on that Foxen vid 10 friggin months ago...

Eren wanted: save his Friends, save Paradis, destroy everything, stop the war, literally choose what you prefer (one of AoTard tell me that I am wrong because Eren want to save his friends and he leave Paradis in such situation on purpose, but in chapter 131 he told that it's not another choise to save Eldia and Paradis, oh but I don't understand AoT...)
