I forgot to mention that, when I've calculated the mpgs by hand, I have always done the "maths" needed to correct for the larger tire size. It's really simple to do. You can use a tire size calculator to find out the percentage of increased tire diameter, then multiply that by the miles listed on the trip meter.
So for example if I'm averaging about 250 on the trip odometer and my diameter difference is 7% from stock, I multiply and it gives me 1750. Would that be 17.5mpg? Also to get the total miles on a single tank would i just add that 7% to my odometer total?

My thought process as an engineer and someone who owns a gas guzzling V8... Under-stressed (low compression ratio) engines will always have poor gas mileage, but on the flip side you will get longevity and reliability. Most vehicles with under-stressed engines are mostly trucks and body-on-frame based SUVs and they give you tremendous capability when you need it. So you do save money from things braking less often, and not having to rent a u-haul or pay someone to move something... I offset my thirsty v8 by commuting to work on a motorcycle when the weather is good. Also, a well cared engine (clean with frequent oil change), tire selection and pressure, and just free of unused stuff definitely helps! Can't wait to see the new toyota!
I sold my 2006 about 6 months ago now. I truly miss the vehicle but do not miss the mpg. Getting $11k for it made it easier to part with. It had 156k for the people wondering
We have a 2010 Sequoia Platinum. Getting about 17MPG’s combined. Would I sell it ? NEVER ! We love it’s reliability, great comfort and safety. Even if it hurts at the pump, we are keeping it.

I recently switched to pizza cutters thanks to you. I went with 255/75/17 Bridgestone Dueler Revo 3 and Im very happy. Its a true 32”. I have stock suspension on replica TRD wheels -I average 16.9mpg now! I had stocks on 275/70/17 KO2s and I was averaging 14.9 mpg. The ride, braking, comfort and noise has also improved. I cant say Im happy enough. Caveat I do drive like a grandma to achieve 16.9. My 01 4 speed gets about 20 mpg at 59. Anything above that takes a hit. I get 17 mpg at 70 mph
I recently switched as well (2003 model year) from a 285/70/17 10-ply Cooper ST Maxx and was getting about 12mpg combined and went to a 255/75/17 BFGoodrich Mud Terrain TA KM. The skinner profile and the 3-ply construction they are quite a bit lighter and I’m seeing about 2mpg increase as well.
I did a rd trip from NYC to Destin FL on my cruiser. I filled up 4 times on 1 way trip and 5 times on the way back. My total trip was 2880miles. I didn't not go all the way to empty every fill up but I do remember I put 65$ each tank and 1/4 gas left. Around 600$ on gas!
Another great video. I would gladly pay more at every fill up and know my V8 sequoia will keep running. Luckily for me it’s paid off so I don’t have a car payment along with the gas prices. I just found out Dave’s TH-cam channel and have enjoyed what he is putting out for us.
For everything you’re getting in return (reliability, power, utility, capability, space) the gas mileage is worth the trade off. Mine has 345k miles and I paid $2200 for it 3.5 years ago so I really can’t complain about the MPGs too much.

Thank you for bringing up these points. I don't think a lot of vehicle reviews talk about this forbidden subject when it comes to the larger vehicles on the road. I guess in today's times we are forced to talk about it. I own a first gen (2003) and I currently get about 20-22mpg on hwy and about 18-19 around my town. My town is not your typical city. Long stretches of 45 to 50mph. My tree is completely stock. Shortly after acquiring my tree I changed the tires from duelers to a hancook light A/T. prior to that I was getting closer to your stock tree mpg but jumped after the tire change. I think that in itself says a lot regarding the effect of tire choice will have on your overall performance. As you mentioned, I'm fanatical when it comes to maintenance. I also only run 89 Chevron. Based on what I can see my tread pattern is close to what you are running. I don't do enough off-road excursions to justify a larger tire. I love the look of your rig but not sure I would want to give up my MPG. Here is the thing about MPG that most people don't talk about. Why does your MPG drop? It's because your rig is working harder to do the same job it was designed to do from the factory. This in itself causes wear on all involved components (everything is working harder, engine, Trans and brakes.) I've been trying to figure out the least invasive way to make my rig a little more off-road capable while keeping the original engineering functioning as close to original as possible. I know tires are a HUGE factor in your rig's capabilities in all different types of terrain. I would love to see more rigs with minimal modifications such as minor lift in front with a more aggressive tire in a stock size. I'm sure they exist. I've even gone so far as to contemplate having two sets of shoes. one for everyday use and a set for playing. I fortunately have the room and tools to do easy tire changes but not everyone has this luxury. Any how,,I'm rambling now, just wanted to share my thoughts.
One of the big ones that hurt too is roof racks. Especially yours with that top hat on there. Increasing frontal area like that is what gets you on mpg. I have the stock rack and just take the cross bars in and out to minimize the loss. Bars running side to side have a lot of area from the front but bars running front to back have extremely minimal area. This is why all the new utility vehicles usually don't come with cross bars anymore.
Increasing tire diameter really hurts Toyotas in general without regearing, due to increased throttle input being required. The 2005-2007 have 3.9:1 gears, while 2001-2004 are supposed to have 4.10:1 gears. 4.10s are a 5% improvement, and 4.10s will actually help you get better mpg with large tires, or with a roof rack.
We just finished building the Girl Friends Sequoia. Icon front and rear 3” height, Method 701’s with 285 Nitto Ridge Grapplers, and fresh installed Sherpa Rack. Just got back from our first road trip up to the snow. Needless to say we averaged 14.5mpg, so it was a pricey trip 😂
05 with 87oct 265/75-16 and get 13 flooring it around town or babying it on the highway doesn't matter what I do. Added a $52 petal controller and got .2 mpg more. Next is to install my jba headers to free up some torque. Sticking with factory exhaust for less sound.
Hello, my fellow Tree owners. Recent purchase of a first gen 04' Sequoia with 186,000 on the odometer. Mpg is at 13.4. You can put a lot of gas in a good vehicle I was once told.
I must be heavy on the skinny pedal.... My 06 Limited is pretty consistent at just over 14mpg for pretty much any driving. It does have stock size (265/65R17) all terrains and a roof rack and box. I plan to pull the roof rack off before a road trip next month and see how it does. One thing a lot of people don't consider in these discussions, is I believe the rigs with the factory tow package came with 4.10 gears while the others had slightly higher gearing (3.91 or 3.73 perhaps) which will likely make a bit of a difference when trying to compare rigs.
My '02 averages 14-15 around town and 18-19 on the highway. Exterior is stock. I'm running 16" Yoko Geolandars. If you don't need the third row, you can leave it in the garage and save you 100lbs. I'm looking forward to installing a replacement skid plate kit all the way back to the cats (Front plate was never reinstalled at a service and forgotten and plate extensions prevent cat theft and underbody aero!).

For my first gen. It's 60 -65 mph is it's happy place. More toward 60 for the best fuel economy. I have 285/70r17 mud terrain. I can get 17 MPG or better on flat ground at that speeds with a 2 inch lift. I'm sure a off road front bumper would hurt it more. Aerodynamics is a huge role above 50 mph I think

The millage makes me hesitant go get one but I have to remind myself that I work from home and my regular car is a Mazda3, and I will probably only use this a handful of times a month plus trips.
Now the best I ever got with my 1st Gen is 17.7 averaging around 60 to 65mph. I think the higher compression 2005 and up , and the 5 speed transmission. Definitely helps. That being said the first gen has Laura compression ratio. Which Iran 87 octane dll day long.😊. When telling everything I put ninety-one or ninety-two in octane. My suspensions 100% stock. City driving 12.8. pretty much no matter what I do. I live in an area with endless hills. Pacific Northwest. I have half inch taller tires than factory. I'm not sure where the calculations come in for that so babe maybe I'm getting better gas that I thought. What is strange's my speedometer reads slow. If anyone has any thoughts on this let me know. I have nothing on my roof accept the stock roof rack Super flat Boudge RV 100 solar panel. It's glued down flush on top
I run 35’s on my 2007 w stock gears (still) and the black monster is far from stock..I pull 16 or so on the highway and around 12 -14 or so on the streets depending on how much I’m in the throttle or if the wife drives it. I find it interesting that people refer to that as bad mileage like all the other people around running 35’s or bigger tires on their truck or suv are getting 35 mpg or something I’ll take my 6000lbs 4x4 seating 8people and out wheel most vehicles half my size with a drivetrain that will go 500k or more all day everyday at 10-18mpgs lol

Doing some math, if you went from Jacksonville to Philly, that's 845mi. At an avg of 55mph it would take you 15.4hrs vs 13hrs at 65mph avg (assuming all highway driving). At your 21mpg you used 40.3gal of gas vs at 16mpg you would have used 52.9gal. Assuming an avg gas price of $3.50 (back when prices were high), you saved $44 while subjecting yourself to an extra 2.4hrs of driving, likely with cars passing you the whole way. Maybe it's just me, but 2.4hrs of my time is worth $44 to me, especially if I'm allowed to drive the speed limit and not have to baby the throttle. At $2.50 gas, the difference in cost goes down to $30. Just food for thought for anyone spending too much time fretting about saving a few mpgs. Of course if you drive a ton and manage to save a few hundred a year, that savings compounds over the years.
ive always wondered if a gear splitter would help. i dont know what rpm it's turning at highway speeds. and obviously this would only work with a 2wd model. but still. would be interesting to try. what sorts of rpms are you at when highway driving?
Running the same Toyo at3 255/80r17s on my first gen tundra, you mentioned ko2’s which would of been my first choice but at this time bfg is only making km2’s. Sadly not a lot of choices in the skinny 33 but only a matter of time before it catches on I would imagine
Interesting to listen to your video, and read the comments regarding fuel economy. A neighbor has a V8 Sequoia, never thought much about their fuel economy. By was of comparison, our 2014 TDI Touareg has a similar curb weight at 5,000 pounds. But w the V6 turbo diesel motor, interstate travel sees us getting 28-31 mpg’s. Just last week, I had to shuttle a family member a total of 120 miles that day, all > 70 mph driving while getting around 30.5 mpg’s. .I know the ‘Treg’ gets decent fuel economy, just didn’t think too much on that until viewing your video. I imagine Toyota sells the Sequoia in diesel worldwide sans the USA. Wonder what fuel economy that might achieve? Nice video. Cheers
I'm a complete weirdo and went with 235/85/16s on Tacoma wheels. Still handles well and doesn't have the drag of the fatties and they're definitely lighter. Go ahead, let the hate rain on me!

I installed flex fuel kit e85 gives me 15.5 mpg on a rwd 2003 sequoia great investment 👍

ive always wondered if a gear splitter would help. i dont know what rpm it's turning at highway speeds. and obviously this would only work with a 2wd model. but still. would be interesting to try.

Running the same Toyo at3 255/80r17s on my first gen tundra, you mentioned ko2’s which would of been my first choice but at this time bfg is only making km2’s. Sadly not a lot of choices in the skinny 33 but only a matter of time before it catches on I would imagine

18-19? Wow. I have a 2007 limited, stock. Can't really get above 16.5 mpg. Not a lot of traffic driving or heavy footed.

Sadly no. I’ve got a 255/75/17 as a spare. Not ideal but it’s pretty close.
Interesting to listen to your video, and read the comments regarding fuel economy. A neighbor has a V8 Sequoia, never thought much about their fuel economy. By was of comparison, our 2014 TDI Touareg has a similar curb weight at 5,000 pounds. But w the V6 turbo diesel motor, interstate travel sees us getting 28-31 mpg’s. Just last week, I had to shuttle a family member a total of 120 miles that day, all > 70 mph driving while getting around 30.5 mpg’s. .I know the ‘Treg’ gets decent fuel economy, just didn’t think too much on that until viewing your video. I imagine Toyota sells the Sequoia in diesel worldwide sans the USA. Wonder what fuel economy that might achieve? Nice video. Cheers

I'm a complete weirdo and went with 235/85/16s on Tacoma wheels. Still handles well and doesn't have the drag of the fatties and they're definitely lighter. Go ahead, let the hate rain on me!

85? Here in Oregon the lowest is 87 octane, mid is 89, and premium is 91
85 is generally found at high elevation. We’re almost at 5,000 feet here.
