    Old vintage Schindler mod by Schindler with very rare S-séries vandal resistant car buttons and with innerdoors.
    Very beautiful lifts

    @harrihealey02 Cool, thanks Harri :) The motor room isn't 'really' high. Probably some short steps would get to it. My shoes were a little too slippery to start climbing on hand rails to reach it, so I didn't!! I'll take trainers next time LOL!
    I checked out the motor rooms for the other lifts. They do a strange thing here, the key for the motor room is in a seperate small locked cabinet, that's mounted ON the door (you can see it in the middle of the screen at 01:56-it's in the red box).

    This reminds me of the lift in my parent's building before it got modernized. A " Gervais-Schindler " lift with those fixtures and the same way of " clicking " ( timers, level detection, etc ... ). It was a simple mono-speed lift, it has since been modernized with variable speed and perfect levelling, which is nice, however it now has sterile vocal announcements, and cheap power electronics rejecting a high pitched noise in every appartments when running ( you can clearly hear that with some cheap speakers systems with a non-filtered power supply ). And what's really " great " is that the travel time is longer since it has been refurbished !

      Yep, everything you've described is the character being ripped away from an old lift. I'm not at all interested in new lifts, except perhaps mitsubishi as these are quite cool. It's surprising how sound vibrations travel through buildings. i remember a block of flats in Slough that had a PTZ camera (pan/tilt/zoom) the old type on the side wall. Residents used to ring up the control room at night to complain about the noise whenever they moved it, because the motors in the PTZ head travelled through the bracket and through the wall!!

      The sound I was talking about doesn't travel through the building, it's noise rejected by power electronics in the electrical network of the builing. Yes, the new electronics are polluting the electrical current ... ! I guess those are some El Cheapo electronics.
      But yes, " mechanical " sounds do travel a lot in buildings, I remember when I was younger and still living with my parents, I was hearing the old motor running when someone used the lift and I knew by heart how the relays were functionning so by counting in my head I knew exactly when the lift would stop and at which level ... all of that from by bedroom. The new motor is less noisy and I barely hear it from my parents appartment ( situated on the top floor ). When waiting for the lift or when riding the lift, everything produces a high pitched noise, it has nothing in common with the original lift :( The motor currently used for the lift is a Schindler W140, the same as in your " HotelExploring!! Hotel/Saudi Arabia. Unlocked old lift motor room (Part 2of2) " video ( seen at 10min06sec ) but with modern control and power electronics.

      Rejected? That doesn't make sense. Sounds like they're not rejecting anything.
      It is _injecting_ noise onto the mains.

    Even though the automatic door one wasnt as epic as the old one it still has some character with the old cabs and the brass doors

    There could be a counter weight in a remote location, I have read about elevators like that before.

    And no wonder so many people hate when they add innerdoors to these swing door ones because as soon as you press a floor button its in a big hurry and wants to shut and take off

    I know you didn't manage to film the first lift (the one nearest to your room) but did you manage to ride it?

    It is very interesting that all over the world old elevators are being upgraded keeping changes that require local legislation and safety. In the countries of the former USSR, old elevators are simply replaced with cheaper and uglier ones. Old parts, cabin, doors are simply cut out. The walls of the mine are made of mesh, replaced with metal sheets. This is all much more expensive than modernization, and looks much worse. It's killing me.

    I am thinking this might be a traction machine with the angle cutout in the ceiling, with a deflector sheave to an independent counterweight hoist way. However it could still be a winding drum w/o a counterweight which are less common but out there.

    • @ag6371
      @ag6371 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      it is a winding drum because there is a slot so the cables can move, where as in traction machines, they have holes only

  • @mrmattandmrchay
    @mrmattandmrchay  13 ปีที่แล้ว

    @funcik1 That's the question :) I don't know. Does it have one? Might not, but if it does, it'll probably be in the lift shaft of the lift that's next door. But the other lift serves the 6th floor, where the scenic lift stops at the 5th, so the shafts don't exactly line up.
    We may never know.

  • @ag6371
    @ag6371 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    The motor actually has a motorized brake instead of a magnetic brake

    I find it really odd how back then schindler made it so that the outside panals are really big and the call button is like 20x smaller and is in the corner like that and not in the middle of the panal

    Now that I'm looking back in this video, it might not be a winding drum lift at all! Here in Norway, it is typical to use anorher shaft for the counterweight if it is a luxurious hotel or building.

    • @mrmattandmrchay
      @mrmattandmrchay  8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      +gutteboy It's more than likely a winding drum. If you look at the "slot" cut for the ropes to go through on the ceiling, you'll see the position of the cable moving from one side to the other as the lift is going up and down - this is because the cable is being wound onto the drum. If there were a counter weight then the cable would be diverted into another shaft and there would be a hole rather than a slot in the ceiling.

    @thyssenelevator95 Yep, no black buttons you mean? :P I like the bulb position indicators on the lower levels with the totally faided ink on the paper behind.

    Does this have a separate counterweight? Winding drums have counterweights separately

    • @mrmattandmrchay
      @mrmattandmrchay  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      At the time, I didn't think it did. But I bet 75% that it DOES have one. There is a normal passenger lift next to this lift, so it could be that the counterweight is located in this shaft. That would make sense. Wish I'd looked, but this was back in 2011?

  • @Bombiedude.

    well even though the inner doors on the old one ruin the character atleast it had some windows to see out the front that kind of makes up for it

    Is the winding drum machine like the R.Waygood winding drum machine

    • @mrmattandmrchay
      @mrmattandmrchay  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi, Sorry, I've got no idea. The lift in this hotel is probably 1940s? The R Waygood was about 40 years older, so technology changes, it's probably not going to look exactly the same.

    • @idl3k_elev
      @idl3k_elev 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      +adithyamc Gaming There is a lift in Medan, Indonesia which was made by R. Waygood and it is said to be the first lift in the country from the early 1900's. A local newspaper said the lift is winding drum and manually controlled.

    Winding drum elevators have 2 counterweights, one on the elevator, and one on the drum itself

    Or like the 1970 winding drum machine

    • @mrmattandmrchay
      @mrmattandmrchay  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      The 1970 winding drum was a one-speed, no passengers goods lift. This one was quite small, so probably cannot compare

      It's from the 1950s by the look of the exterior fixtures.
