I don't have a strict no-buy, but I have a rule that I cannot buy something that can be duped already in my collection. I also try to keep in mind my makeup habits and what I actually wear.

I like how Hannah Louise poston handles new products coming in. She seems to have a separate bin and then after a month or two she goes through and decides what stays in her collection or what gets passed on. I think this strikes a good balance for what you guys do 😊

I was just about to comment something similar, adopting a system like Hannah and ruthlessly declutter/move items out of your collection quicker. That way they can be more easily donated/given away too.

I don’t do very well when I put myself on total no buys 😅 so 3/4 years ago I started giving myself a small monthly budget for makeup and clothes and I keep a journal of what I spent and finished during the months tryin’ to be alert about the amount of time a product needs to be re-purchased ! This system helped me a lot I have to admit it 😅

    • @hayleylongster4698

This is kinda what I do. I have a low 'pocket money' system weekly. So currently I have a £10 allowance for makeup per week. This usually gets spent on replacements or cheap staple products.
Then on top of that I have a £50 monthly allowance to spend on 'treat' products, new releases, big ticket items etc. This means I have to 'budget' my new item purchases to 1 expensive thing a month, or 2-3 less expensive things.
So in total, my upper limit is around £100 per month, which is manageable for me, and includes all my beauty spending. I often don't spend that much anyway- there's at least 1 week per month that I don't use the £10 weekly allowance.

Your project pans and no buy videos definitely helped me in a time where I was trying to cut back on the makeup I was buying and helped me to focus more on using what I have. While I still enjoy the videos, in my life I've gotten to a good point with my collection and buying habits and don't need to consume that content anymore. If youre not feeling them anymore, dont do them. And who's to say in a year or two you might be so excited to bring them back, things are constantly changing.

As someone who has successfully done a makeup no buy for a year, i found that i kept the mindful habits for a couple years after and gradually started to over consume again. So i think that these challenges are good resets every few years because its very easy to fall back into old habits.

After watching all the mindless content of new makeup coming out, I realized how many launches there actually are. Now that I am on a low buy ( only buying replacements for what I need) I realize what my makeup style is.. and also what I actually need to create the looks I enjoy. Anyone that has a makeup addiction should try a low buy for one time.. its really eye opening to see how many palettes have the exact same shades... etc.

I started watching your content because of your project pans and I still really like these kind of videos, same with low/no buy content. However I can totally understand if you don’t want to do them anymore and I will continue to watch your content as long as the conscious consumerism focus stays. I think it’s important to listen to your audience but at the end of the day it’s your channel and you should do what you makes you happy.

for me, project panning started as more of a "utility" thing to help reduce the size of my makeup collection and have a more thoughtful mindset about my consumption. over the last year or two, it's become more of a fun thing! i love seeing and participating in themed project pans

  • @wordsfromleetoyou
    @wordsfromleetoyou ปีที่แล้ว +4

I think a "Decluttering Dupes" video could help cut back SO much, as long as there is content published noting the dupes (maybe even alternatives?) for viewers. It would also be super helpful to see which product "wins" to stay in the collection and why exactly. ✨

I honestly love this in terms of consumerism! I’ve recently been getting back into make up as circumstances in my career have made it easier to do so. So it’s really fun reinvesting myself in make up. But I am going to be honest I do get overwhelmed by the sheer amount of product that’s out there, so I really appreciate your opinion and take on all of the make up. And I also appreciate the view of using what you have with occasional splurges!

First...this look is stunning! Your hair and eye makeup are so inspiring and lovely to look at! Second...I really enjoy the no buy, low buy and project panning series as they really help in calming down the FOMO built from other channels. I hope you will still do something in that vein as it's refreshing! That said, you are queen of making new videos using the same products with a new spin, so do you.

I like the no buy videos. I don't do total no buys, but remembering that I probably have a product that's similar, that I also own more blush than I will use in years, or recognizing the "pop of color" palettes, already does really help reign in the impulse buys.

  • @EspressoLaine

For what it’s worth - you are one of the last beauty TH-camrs I’m still watching BECAUSE of your project pan and low buy series. There is such a gap between the YT beauty community and actual consumers - your content up til now has put you in a unique position to bridge that gap. Without those projects, I suspect viewers like myself will find you less relatable and further withdraw from the community. If I want reviews, I can find them elsewhere - but on this channel I sort of feel like I have a “buddy system” that keeps me from overspending, coveting every new palette and powder, and letting things expire in drawers. It’s a lot easier to do if someone else - ie, a TH-camr - is continuously inspiring that and doing it “with” you. ❤

I love generally hearing your ongiong thoughts on how to use what you have and limit consumption, it's so helpful! But if you don't love this particular format, that's okay. Things like you saying to be mindful of how quickly cream products go bad, or that you try not to keep too many mascaras open at once (big problem for me lol) or how to achieve the look of a trend or new product with what you already have in your collection are what I want to continue hearing. And I'm sure I will! Maybe a video every so often in a random format of your choosing on how to make use of our collections. Like how to achieve current trends without buying new, or your shop my stash videos or something. But you don't have to keep with this format if it doesn't make you happy!

Hello! I always love watching your no buy and project pan updates but there are other ways to be mindful of makeup purchases and consumption. I have seen some TH-camrs do monthly beauty purchases recap and they just talk about all the products they have purchased that month. Knowing how your channel is I think it could work for you best if you do a check in every couple months of all the beauty products that have come into your collection. You could even keep track of how many times you have used them since you gotten them. And if that is not enough for one video you could pair it with your empties so you have a direct comparison of how many products come into your collection versus how many products get used up. Regardless, I truly love all your videos ❤

I appreciate your mindfulness about the products you share. When you repeatedly share the products you love (opposed to new products every single time) I can make better decisions about trying those items knowing they have been tried and true for you. Conversely, when you say a product you’ve tried is bad, I trust you. I unsubscribed from certain TH-cam channels because so many new products are introduced weekly and all those products are described as “great.” I’ve wasted so much money finding out how bad so many of those “great” products are😭 You’re a good example of what influencing should be. Thanks for putting good quality content out there.

I've been using a low-buy spreadsheet that Sarah Rose put together and shared. It's been nice to keep track of my collection, how many empties I've had, how many things I've decluttered, and what I've purchased. I've given myself caps, but I'm also not being too strict. I've found that just keeping track of what I have has made me more conscious of what I do/don't need and kept my purchasing under control.

Hi Kelly! I just have to give you some kudos for being THE most mindful content creator I watch regarding personal consumption and the downstream impacts overconsumptuon can have.
Like you said, I'm not sure there is a right answer all the time, especially for you as a content creator! However, making exceptions to your no buys for the sake of a video vs your own personal want is a great place to start! Again, the fact that you even think about this at all let alone how seriously you seem to take it deserves some major kudos! Thanks for these videos and the helpful reminders about the impacts of overconsumption!

11:04 *Kelly: On Foundations:* Why not go to Sephora and simply get samples instead of buying? Should be more than enough to do one video. Also, trade with other influencers for the cost of shipping. Many products can be sanitized via alcohol for powdered products and UV light for other products.

Hey Kelly! Ive been watching your content for quite a few years (around 5/6?). Its totally valid to shift your content in order to do what makes sense for you/your stash and what makes you happy.
With you being a creator, I also find it totally understandable that you're focusing your content on something other than project panning as thats a rather small community.
I appreciate you're trying to please every viewer of yours but I dont thnk thats the way to go, honestly. The ones of us who are here for project panning and low buy-related content aren't enjoying the content and the ones whom aren't, dont care for that said content. With that being said, I believe you should make the content you want to do and that'll will attract individuals interested in that type of thing.
Personally, this year I stayed for your personality but (as someone who only ever cared about the project panning content) it has become less and less enjoyable to watch your videos. Its noticeable that you are not interested in making the video or working on the project so it genuinely feels like a waste of time (both yours and ours)

I loved your project pan videos as you were one of the first to get me into them. I also remember when you did OOTDs ;) No buys and low buys are good tools but if you think you have learned those lessons feel free to pivot your content - I would love to see you do a usage still goal or have focus products that rotate do what works for you but I appreciate how you and others have introduced me to being mindful about my spending in makeup. I broke some of my rules but my low buy for the most part has been successful. I definitely can see where I need to work on my consumption and where I need to focus on using what I have its a fine balance and I think you are doing a great job at balancing your channel and what you want to buy. And love this eye look its beautiful.

Since you were asking for feedback, here’s my two cents:
In terms of what content I’m interested in, for me the role of the beauty content creator is to “overconsume” on the viewer’s behalf, so the viewer can use the information they provide to make more efficient purchasing decisions. I’m sure there’s a niche for no-buy content etc for people looking for strategies to change their purchasing habits, but that’s not really an issue for me personally. I know I am just one person though, so do what is best for your channel!
I find your product reviews very helpful so I am always happy to see more of those. Thanks for all you do, Kelly! 💜

This look looks very pretty on you. IMO, it would be good for you to do these types of looks for one of your videos per week. It demonstrates options for your viewers, helps them use palettes they already have and allows them to explore outside of there comfort zone or for those who love a hint of glam shows them how to do it in an everyday okay way. Keep up the good work!

I think a cool idea would be to dupe what you have in your collection with a new product. So let’s say the new Natasha denona palette going through your collection and creating a look that’s similar to the color story of that palette or even a blush or lipstick because I feel like companies are just releasing the exact same thing just different packaging anymore does that make sense?

I had to toss out all my lipsticks due to an infection. I want to treat this category similarly to how I treat macara, eyeliner, eye primer etc. I know the shades of lipstick I like so I want to own 1 in each category. 1 pink, 1 mauve and 1 orange tone. I want to replace them as as I use them up like I would mascara, eyeliner primer etc.
My "problem" categories are blush and eyeshadow. I really only want 2 or 3 blushes from Tarte at the moment. I worry though that if I aqcuire them I'll find something else to want. I used to be really good about blush.
With eyeshadow, I moved some palettes into a makeup case I have so that I have room for compact mirrors and brush cleaning tools. I also have recently gotten a couple of the 6 pan pro palettes from Lorac that I love for neutrals and some of the on the go palettes from Sigma. I'm enjoying the variety I have though I am still a bit exasperated by bow much I wang to keep. I have found in the past with clothes and other things that I really value having more space. So this may help keep me in check. The only "problem" is I kind of want almost every Sigma palette. Almost. If they come out with more green in their oine up I'll probably pounce but I need to get to a point where I'm not treating them like pokemon. I don't need to catch them ALL. Also I am trying to keep down the temptation the buy Lorac's 18 pan pro palettes, noir, soleil and the forest palette. I find a formula I like and I'm like, I want it ALL. Lol

I feel this! I wanted to take a break from panning this year - which lasted exactly 22 days, LOL. Now I'm kind of tired of it again, so after my next update I'll probably take another break for a few months. I'm kind of in reset mode right now, anyway. After spending a lot in April, I've been on a replacement-only no-buy for two months - which is going well, but all these new shadow sticks are tempting me! I'm also doing a slow declutter until August when I will see my nieces (tweens getting into makeup).

🤔I am no means a Project Panner, but because I just adore you, Kelly, I watch every single video you release--including Project Pan content--whereas there are other creators i follow for whom I would give that video a miss. However, I do love the recent focus that you and a number of my faves have zeiroed in on and that's the swerve to conscious consumption/consumerism. I also love a more talky-style, analysis of the same. Hey, I even enjoy a good spreadsheet! 🤓 Beauty TH-cam can be more than hauls, tutorials, first impressions, and reviews.
Project Panning is all about using what you have, and I do take a lot of inspo with the way folks rotate their products and make a conscious effort to utilize what they already have. I agree that if you already are attuned into what those items are, then the "rules" holding you accountable are no longer necessary. Its ok to give yourself permission to put the guardrails down when you find it no longer serves you. In so doing, you allow your content to organically grow up with you.
BTW....the hair, the eye look are sooo good, but tying the scarf with the gold in the eye look was truly inspired!!!👩‍🍳💋 Much love!❤❤❤

We can all text my daughter when you want to buy something. She will talk sense into you and you’ll put it down. Lol. She will tell you don’t give them your money!!! I’ll send her pix of something and she’ll say Don’t do it!! Lol.

First of all you look amazing. I love the hair and makeup and I immediately went to what you were wearing on your lips.
Secondly, I dont know if Im in the minority but I agree with you. I enjoy your focus on consuming less and being mindful but I also think it's a lesson you learn and then carry with you. Maybe occasionally it makes sense to do a low buy or a project pan when you find yourself straying but I dont think there always needs to be a set strict plan. You're also a content creator so it may be necessary to buy certain things for videos and I dont think no buys should always get in the way of the creative process, especially when the video is very well thought out.
That being said you have inspired me to use the stuff I already own so I do like that focus on your chanel I just don't necessarily think strict no buys or project pans has to be the way to go. Especially if theyre not fun to film for you.

I love your no-buy and project pan videos, but I don't want you to feel forced to do them!! I would love to see other videos about you being mindful about your makeup collection and consumption. Maybe there are other formats out there :)

Honestly, I’ll watch anything you put out, so I wouldn’t feel too much pressure in terms of topics.
I love project pan content, but I’m a bit like you in that I have moved away from panning my own makeup like I used to. I used to keep a list and weigh everything and try to use more stuff, but I don’t find that as fun any more. I still try to focus on using up some categories, but it’s much more organic.
I would still like to see empties videos, though! I think they are very helpful and kind of serve a similar purpose(especially when they include a total at the end of the year).
Also, totally unrelated side note you can feel free to take or leave: you seem really close up to the camera in this video? I know you’ve been messing around with the lenses on your camera, but for a chatty video like this (rather than an application video) it seems a bit close up? But idk. Not a big deal, just something I noticed.

I like how you’re talking through your TH-cam future with us. I watch project pans but not basic ones, fun ones or eyeshadow based. Also no buy and low buys just teach us our shopping habits so if you’ve learned all you can about yourself you’ve exhausted the resource. Just my two cents.

You can make a budget for products you buy for video. Like you can say for a month you can use 50$ to buy products for any video

I’ve gotten VERY good about not buying anything I don’t already have something that will will be just fine “for now.” Exception: I’m a freak for pallets, which in and of itself isn’t a bad thing, to my mind. However, most are purchased merely as art…I’d explain if I understood it, but…

I am all for mindful consumption of make up and beauty products.
Doesn’t have to be project pan, or no buys specifically.
Honestly one of my favorite things Is to search TH-cam for a review of a foundation (or concealer, or skin care, whathaveyou) that I have. Because I want to share the experience with somebody else who has it.
Sometimes I will browse my favorite makeup creators videos and if I see a product that I have or have wanted in the thumbnail image. I’m basically searching for somebody to remind me of the coolness of the products that I have 😆. I don’t really need new stuff

I don't think lessons are a one and done. Especially in a world that tells us the opposite lesson. It's hard to remain mindful of consumption when everything out there is telling you to consume. Same as it's hard to continually love your body/face when the world says you're too much or too little and moves the goalposts every trend season.
It might be a lesson to revisit again in the future and keep in mind. But if you feel fine for now it's ok to ease the reins
