Should have gone to Spec-Savers, you scrolled past Ford twice Rob. Even with this little problem, it's still a cracking little motor for what you paid for it.
Could be microbiological growth in the diesel. It grows in diesel that has been sat too long and the water content in the diesel increases over time. It'll block everything up from tank to injectors. I spent 21 years working for Esso and MBG was something that we had to regularly monitor. A friend of mine bought some "cheap" red diesel to put in his boat....the fuel had been sat too long and it made an absolute mess of the fuel system on his Volvo Penta Diesel.....he broke down in the middle of the River Tamar. I helped him clean everything up. Of course it could just be a relay 😀
@@alungibbon9146 petrol loses calorific value over time also now petrol is 5% bio ethanol which is hydroscopic e.g. it absorbs water. No fault codes found. That occurred alot, even when RAC turned up, no fault codes. I got rid of it. Death trap just cutting out. When it ran it was a brilliant car to drive, but it did my head in at the end.
The other thing to watch out for is the Dual Mass Flywheel (DMF). Another costly failure. When I was idling with clutch in, you could feel a slight rocking as the car just idled. They (Ford) advised that the DMF was on the way out.
Bought a '56 plate 1.8tdci hatchback about 3 years ago. Almost straight away it started to play up - occasionally stuttering or cutting out, with the instrument cluster also behaving weirdly. Finally it died and went into immobiliser mode. The AA didn't have a clue, but a local auto-electrician knew it was the instrument cluster itself. He took it out and sent it away for refurbishment, got it back, refitted it and hey presto! That was at about 111K, I've put a lot of faultless miles on it since then. Apparently its quite a common fault, and Mondeos can suffer the same. Love your videos by the way.
Like the mic Rob, should prove very beneficial, especially with our weather. Looking forward to seeing you resolve this one. Great channel keep up the good work.

@bill Bloggs Not sure the diesel TDCi has wheel sensor. Just to clarify to everybody, when I say mine cut out, it would actually go into limp mode which is just as dangerous as it drops down to about 15mph max. First time it happened was on the M56. I was doing about 80mph and the warning lights and ford sound went off on the panel. So F dangerous. I managed to get it quickly onto hard shoulder. No way was I sitting in the outside lane. Glad to see you picking up a cheap motor and trying to turn around a small profit again... missed this! The mic works great, makes a real difference in the wind. My bet is it’s the fuel filter. Cant wait for the next instalment!
Looking at the engine bay and sound of the engine, this might be 1.8tdci, correct? I'd start by looking at the cam position sensor, These tend to break after a while and engine will immediately stop running. Then there's the usual fuel issues (1.8tdcis dont have a low pressure fuel pump, so you can skip looking at those). As others suggested, fuel filter, air in the system, sludge diesel or water could be the issue here. If you plan on changing the fuel filter, i highly recommend installing non return valve style hand pump in the fuel rail (easiest to do in the plastic rail just above the fuel injectors). This will get rid of any air, when you change the filter and make your life much easier. Renault DCIs use this kind of pump from the factory! Snapped belt(s) or dead high pressure fuel pump could also be the issue, but probably less likely. Also, i'd invest into a forscan compatible obd scanner (around 5-10$ on ebay, software is free). It makes diagnosing these suckers much easier.
Weird cutting out with no fault codes stored problems on Focuses (and related cars like CMaxes, Transit Connects etc.) can be caused by the solder joints on the main connector for the clocks cracking- this causes CANBUS faults. I think normally you get weird warnings and limp mode before it dies completely, but it's quite an easy job to whip the clocks out, dismantle them and re-solder the joints, so maybe worth a go. Took me about an hour to do my brother's. th-cam.com/video/ei7JguJ0apE/w-d-xo.html
The mic does the job, I wouldn't worry too much, if the car is knackered, like you say you can flog it for spares or repairs and get your money back but hopefully it'll be a cheap fix which will make a more interesting video finding out what's wrong with it. Keep the vids coming Rob, all worth the effort

The new Mike sounds so much better, way to go... As to the Focus what a find. £550.00 for anyone would be a steal.. Love it.. I am sure it's either the fuel, the filter or a leak. With no codes that's a good sign...
As usual rob great video. Love the real time buying and attempting to start the car! Great stuff! Defo better with mic too. I would say diesel as well - maybe filter or injectors blocked. Can’t wait to see part 2! Keep up the good work rob and Chris 👍
Hi Rob. Mic makes all the difference. I'm going to hedge my bets on the diesel filter and as the car was standing for so long, stale diesel. Great vid as always.
The mic has made a massive difference 👍 As for the breakdown I'm guessing fuel blockage. A mate of mine had a discovery that had been laid up about a year and the diesel in the filter and pump had turned to black gunge.
Top video, the wind noise was non existent with the mic, a lot better than normal when your in the wind. Fingers crossed it's something and nothing and you get it up and running, it will be interesting to find out. Cheers 👍 Jack
Hi Rob, first thing I would check are the cambelts, you have a top belt and a bottom chain, but yours is boarder line when they changed for a bottom wet belt. A quick spray with easystart would rule them out if it starts. Word of warning, if you change the fuel filter you have to pressurise the fuel system with a primer bulb or it will never start 👍🤞.

Hi Rob,what a bargain at £200,being valeted it's a nice looking car,and the interior is tidy enough, the problem maybe fuel filter, the fuel being stale, but the next video will tell us hopefully.great video.
Another fantastic video Rob. 6 months ago, I had the same Focus but 59 plate TDCI, very similar mileage...best car I have ever owned (had it about 7 years). I commute in and out of London, the car cost me nothing but pads and disks, oil and the odd set of tyres. By far the cheapest and most reliable car I have EVER owned. It had the Lynx engine which was solid as anything. Started getting quite a lot of oil leakage at 160k, the cost to get an indy to clean engine and work out where the leak was was going to be costly, so sadly, I traded it in for a brand new ULEZ compliant car. Wish I could have kept it as it was solid as anything. Hope you can get this one sorted as I loved mine and did a similar mileage to your one in it.
Should have gone to Spec-Savers, you scrolled past Ford twice Rob.

Class. All sent to test us Rob. Good days work though ......
These budget flipping videos are cool rob
Love these quick-turnaround videos. Sound is great now, too. If anyone can sort that Focus out, you can!
