    These Peugeot engines are complete dross, I ended up doing a full engine swap on my daughters Cooper when it dropped a valve and trashed the engine.... weak timing gear and plastic parts everywhere. Most used car dealers avoid them like the plague, they aren't worth the hassle

    ooh Mini R56, the famous Prince engine, same as my Peugeot 207cc ... will definitely need oil refilling every few hundred miles (0.5l/1000km is norm in my car manual) :) the major downside to me, but it runs pretty nice!

    Nice tidy car. We have the R56 John Cooper Works and it goes like a rocket. It is the BMW engine with the timing chain that someone else mentioned, they go at around 60,00miles, lets hope your has been done, dead noisey when cold. We had our guys over here in Oz walnut blast the inlet manifold as they build up with gunk, made a massive difference to the get up and go. Looking forward to the rest of the work on it, good luck.

  • @TheDevilVaper
    @TheDevilVaper 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    Most common issues on these are the timing chain and tensioner.
    Another thing to look for is oil starvation. The THP engines suffer from burning through roughly a litre of oil every 1000miles, and the dipstick also reads incorrectly (shows more oil than is actually in the engine)

    • @TheDevilVaper
      @TheDevilVaper 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Oooh, and to add another possible cause of the problem; Take the inlet manifold off and have a look at the top of the valves. These usually get covered in oil deposits from the PCV system and require wallnut blasting to remove it.
      Please take note that processes that clean the engine through the fuel system (such as Terraclean) do not work, as the injectors spray into the cylinder and not on top of the valves.
      Hope this helps once again, mate!

  • @TheBenLG
    @TheBenLG 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    At 87k miles it could be carbon buildup on the intake valves causing the misfire. Good news is the high pressure fuel pump seems ok and the timing chain didn't rattle too bad. One other thing relating to the back seat being out, it might be worth changing the fuel filter, they are listed as a lifetime part but I did mine at 75k and it was jet black and full of debris. Looking forward to seeing what you do as I have one and I've done most of the common fixes. Just need to change the valve stem seals on mine...

    I'm not car mechanic, but I read so many articles about how bad this BMW/Peugeot engines in this Mini. They are a factory recall. Worst engine you can get in a small car. If you take it to the BMW garage, they will tell you to take it to Peugeot, cos it's cr4ppy french engine. If you go to the Peugeot garage, they will tell you to take it to BMW cos it's a cr4ppy german engine. No one wants to touch these. Often the engine dies under 50k even, when you follow all the service intervals and you bought it new.

    • @byronmills5952
      @byronmills5952 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It's a basically a Peugeot block and pistons mated to a horrific BMW designed cylinder head with weak BMW timing gear guides and Vanos system - which gives all of the problems.

  • @mikec6919
    @mikec6919 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    I’m sure it’s bought at the right money, but my money is on bad timing, sounds like death rattle when you started it (google r56 death rattle) timing chain tensioner failure and new chain + tensioner normally sorts them, very little point doing a compression test until you have confirmed the tensioner failed as it will just be out of time, hopefully it’s not damaged anything else, awful engines to work on generally but they drive very well when they drive right!

    • @1066gaz
      @1066gaz 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@jamesbrett6518 Yes james it would run on 3 cylinders, but run roughly.
      If the timing chain skipped 1 or even 2 teeth only then there would be a good chance that there would be no damage to the engine at all.
      But if the chain skips more than 2 teeth then you start to get engine damage i would imagine.
      I know this because it's happened to my bro's 2003 honda hornet 600 twice in skipping 1 tooth and later on 2 teeth with the tensioners failing and getting away with it twice with no damage at all.
      His bike has done 140,000 miles as well and still runs strong using hardly any oil.
      That's honda quality for you.
      He always uses castrol power 1 fully synthetic oil as well.
      I would guess the mini has skipped at least 3 teeth if it is indeed the tensioner failure that's caused the damage, that is if the engine is damaged, it might be something different entirely.
      That's why it's so important to switch off the engine as soon as you can when you hear your engine making a racket or starts to run rough all of a sudden.
      Sometimes you can get away with it if your quick to switch off when you have engine problems.

    The lifters like to jump off on these engines because the valve seats come loose from the head seating, ps: cylinder number one starts at the gearbox side as Peugeot strangely decided to number the cylinders the other way around

    If a battery has a dead cell it hurts batteries that jump it. Love the color and the fact it has an S. You can make it up to Chris’s fans by running it in a rallye. Or there is always the Cosworth........... great car 🚙

    They're a lot nicer than my original Cooper, but still a retro look to it.
    Don't think the arthritis would let me fit in one nowadays? Good old days!!
    Quite like the biggest minis, might look into one?

    That sounded like that Mini had the N14 'death rattle' so I would be looking to change the timing chain & tensioner. Luckily they come in a sort of assembled 'kit' and literally drop in place.
    They have been know to coke up valves. Its not a big job just time invested. Also check the inlet manifold gaskets.
    Whatever mate you (once again) got a right result.

    Cylinder head needs to come out....possible burnt or broken valve. Very common with N14 engine timing chain tensioner becoming loose and resulting in jumping the chain.

      Watch out for the piston to go Kaboom. Happened to 2 of mates. These engines are notorious for that, despite the tuners saying it's the same as the stronger BMW 2.0 versions ;)

    Brill another video!! I wonder is the misfire that the valves are coked up. BMW do walnut blasting on the inlet valves as a service item because direct injection doesn’t wash fuel over the backs of the valves.....

    Rob sounds like the timing chain is slack. Replace the tensioner at the rear of the engine behind the silicone hose. Mini did an up date with a stiffer spring. Also worth lifting the rocker cover off to check plastic tensioner is still in place

    Hi Rob
    I have one of those little li-lion battery chargers, and it starts my 2.2 ltr Jaguar X-Type no problem,..but they say if your batt is totally flat it won't start, but it starts mine up from flat!
    if I leave my Jag for a week the batt goes flat, I think I need a new 'un!
    Regards
    Chris
    Stay safe & happy Christmas.

    I reckon it's the fuel pump, if it's has a cheap Chineseium fuel pump fitted it's probably putting the right fuel pressure out, put a genuine pump on it rob, only say this because i have been there an done that with a Peugeot before!
