What kind of muppet flogs a bent motor to a channel like these 2 lovely guy's ?
Karma will get them
Had same fault ( crankshaft end float) with low mileage 1.4 Mokka. Vauxhall dealership quoted £7,000 to replace engine after trying a set of shells. Low miles, full Vauxhall service history, customer had car just over a year : no warranty or contribution. I bought accident damaged Mokka from Copart & swapped engine, had customer back on road for under £3,000. Common fault on 1.4 Vauxhalls.
"you can have a paddy, but it won't fix the problem' what a great philosophy for life 👍
Motor traders are the salt of the earth and 100% honest and open about every car they sell. Honest its true.

The good ones are, like these guys.
are you one? 😅
Better check the engine number Rob - it's possible that whoever did the work has swapped the engine out and taken the low mileage one???
Nope doubt it. To much hassle
It’s actually a good video to show that everything isn’t all roses, that not everything makes a profit and it’s all about keeping ahead of any losses you may make.
This is very much my experience
Rob, Chris.........I am sending you my number, My dads Astra sri Has the same engine as that corsa, he had an accident last month and wrote the car off, I think its still in a local yard awaiting collection as hes been paid out, it only had 18K on it one owner, i can make a call and see if the car is still there
Astra J or K if it's K it's the wrong engine this needs the older engine from astra J there completely different engines in the astra K with direct injection
New clutch required for car with only 31K on it!?!? Would be disgusted having to change a clutch with double that mileage....
Agree with that. Unlesss it was owned by the old boy I saw recently (who should not be on the road) who smoked out Sevenoaks high st. with clutch smoke, taking a couple of minutes getting up to speed. Not an exageration. He was probably taking off in 4th gear
Despite all the Vauxhall haters coming out of the woodwork on here it would be good to see this one saved not scrapped.
My wife and I like watching you both, she says you’re like an old married couple 😂
There is always a chance that the garage did something wrong and patched it back up.
Crank walk is the thrust bearing failed. It's not a dead engine. It probably wasn't aligned properly OR it has been abused by the driver riding the clutch. The garage obviously changed the clutch and the problem was still there so they opened the sump and found the thrust bearing has failed. Rather than removing the crankshaft or being honest with the customer, to keep the money from the job they packed it up and sent it down the road. A bit of a shitty move by the garage.
Look once at the car and twice at the owner....
*100%!!!*
Unlucky, lads. I’m a retired mechanic, and back in the day you could repair most engine failures. It’s just uneconomical, now, as you have said. Your granny car engines only get one life, now.
I know you’re staying cool about being shafted, but off camera , I bet you’re planning your revenge 😂😂😂
There's dishonest people all over the place, sorry to hear this Rob.
@@greggbutler9344 thrust washers only fail when an engine is being revved within an inch of its life ie young boy racers trying to impress the girls or mates, seen it over and over again,I’m sorry to say I was that idiot once but it got very expensive and I learnt very quickly, some others not so much.
@@alancobbin not always the reason mate but one of them yea
the previous owner got ripped off by the vauxhall dealer,.
that's why i will never buy a vauxhall/opel
What a shame lads! As if they didnt think they'd get caught out 😅 & you'd even been to there address to collect it!
I know terrible isn’t it I think you need to hit that share button liven it up and share some love lol 👍
Nope, you've got this far, just because the sump has been off doesn't mean anything has been replaced. Whip it off and confirm yourself before condemning the engine. Good content as always!
Remember the old school front wheel drive vauxhall clutches done in half and hour max
1.4 turbo , the worst engines they could possibly do .... Had a zafira with a bad engine... Bought another car off copart for the engine , surprise surprise.... Knackered engine.... Even worse than the one on my car ... I'll never touch a vauxhall again
Wip the sump off, with that amount of end float they may have forgotten to fit the thrust washers/shims or whatever fancy name they call them today.
Nasty, the seller might be laughing all the way to the bank. But what goes around. I’m just glad you boys caught it before it gets moved on to some unfortunate buyer..
I won’t touch a Vauxhall with a barge pole, junk.
It's a Vauxhall, enough said!
If it made that noise after i had the work done, I'd immediately ask the garage what's the story with it..
Have you considered that whoever did the bottom end work on it, didn't put the crank thrush washers back in? Or, alternatively park it up and wait for a Cat B to come up at Co-part to pinch the engine from.
No no, this is a well known problem, go to any vauxhall forum and they will tell you to stay clear of the 1.4T due to endfloat problems and also LSPI...I dont remember if it's not the LSPI that creates the endfloat problem actually.
Cars of gone full cycle. 70s 80s they only had 80 - 100k in them before they were worn out. 90s early 2000s well built and you were generally getting what you paid for. Since then manufacturers havd cost engineered cars into very expensive hunks of junk.
with designed to fail key plastic components in impossible to extract location...
I’d say it’s been through what every young man’s car goes thru. A thrashing.
In actual fact Rob that was an very good video it carried a health warning about buying cars and how even the best of them of them can get caught out , and even with the most care things can go wrong. Even more use than a quick flip in a way.
That’s a lot of end float for a small engine, thrust washers and crank must be totally knackered.
I would strip the bottom end as it is in the car and see what the actual issue is rather than keep guessing and then make a decision. If its toast (which would surprise me) then slap it back together and Copart it as a non runner.
Yep, totally agree with you on this. For the sake of extra half hour work for confirmation. Engine sounds good, low mileage. Deffo worth pulling a main and a rod bearing out furthest from the oil pump.
Crank thrust bearing wear is a known issue on those Rob. Have you guys checked the excess end float on the crank, and what's the rest of the engine condition like ? I wouldn't just assume some engine work has been done because of the new sealant. It may have been a quick check once the clutch wasn't found to be the cause, and they've replaced the friction plate as a matter of course. The owner may have decided they'd spent enough already, especially as most of the job would be a repeat of the parts stripdown already done, again. Depending on its potential resale value, and how much you're in to it already, you could just be looking at a new oversized main bearing set to fix it, possibly a crank dress / grind and big ends too. If it's a genuine mileage car, then it should be worth spending a bit, but maybe not to the extent of an engine swap.
How is oversize main bearings going to fix end float
@@garyevans9509 Depending on the design, many engines have just a centre main bearing with shoulders, that are the thrust bearing face. They have different thickness of white metal coating. It may , or may not need a crank grind to get bearings with the right combination of diameter, and thrust face thickness. Whoever stripped it down after the clutch was found to be OK, may not have even taken a main cap off. They may have not wanted the hassle and frightened the customer that it needed an engine rebuild. The guys could get out of it with the simplicity of a new main set, depending what's there regarding wear. It's the sort of car that attracts abuse of the clutch on full bore standing starts, so putting excess wear on the fore/ aft thrust on the crankshaft.
You are so far in, drop the sump and lets have a look at the problem please!!
I know you won't want to invest any more time if it's going to the scrapyard, but it would be interesting to see inside that sump.
Got a feeling that mileage ain't genuine
I knew it was gonna be the engine. I had the exact same thing happen to my wife's corsa. 32 thousand miles on it. Ended up selling it to a garage for 1 k. They put a new engine in and sold it. We just wanted rid but still had 3 k to pay. Never had another.
typical Vauxhall tripe! even at 30k miles it’s scrap!
take the sump off and have a look it looks like the thrusts are missing with that ammount of end float you have nothing to loose by looking
Benefit of the doubt for the owner, garage might have told them they’ve done that and fixed the car.
If you're a sub of this channel you know what these boys are all about, how anyone could pull this on Rob & Chris. Shame on them. As always sure you boys will make the best of it as you always do.
From what I have discovered on TH-cam is in fact the end float on the crankshaft when operating the clutch is in fact the thrust bearings need replacing. So now with all in situ, drop the sump and replace them. Years ago my big ends went, so drained the sump. Laid on my back under the car removed the sump, dropped the crank, and fitted oversized bearings. Put it all back together and drove it it for many miles. Hillman Minx 1968..
Oh no, the dreaded Vauxhall floating crank syndrome strike's again, number 4 main bearing probably has a track cut in the side of itself from the thrust bearing, the back of the flywheel and the sump flange then become the new thrust bearing, seen it too many times on these engines.
Could it have been the guy getting the clutch done was ripped off, you will never know!
There's a lot of people out there jealous of your success mate, to any normal person you're a very fair/decent man and I hope you shrug off the subscribers who leave nasty and unfair comments. You're doing a great job of keeping me entertained.
Throwing shapes at 5:34 🕺🏿😂
32k miles and had to have the clutch done! That should set off warning bells about the state of the car.
Yep an original oem clutch should last much longer than 30k, even somebody that rides the clutch.
You should have realised this rob.
There are lazy drivers like my elderly aunt. Always pulled away from a stop in second gear, never used the handbrake in traffic on a hill, more clutch slip and her Fiesta had a new clutch at 37k.
It's probably more to do with full bore wheel spin starts, putting excess thrust wear on the fore / aft motion of the crankshaft.
Did you see what looked like a BlackBox sticker on the rear?
I wonder who was actually driving the car?
New drivers can easily burn a clutch out in 30k miles.
To be fair so can an elderly driver who rides the clutch.
I reversed my brand new WRX into my drive once, was a slight incline, and you could smell clutch 🤣🤣

When it was running it sounded like the tappets were really worn. My guess is it's been run low on oil at some point. Those engines are known for burning oil which is probably why they are so expensive used.
I just been watching Car Wizard, he had 2 cars with engines that don't run, he called them "Boat Anchors" that made me laugh and I thought of your duff engine, perhaps you could use that with your boat out in the Yard !
Shameful scammers ,Karma will get em.
It is a common problem with that engine.
Rob, Chris. I am saddened by this but you've both got the right attitude... Bob (Weston super Mare)
Guys I do believe the guy was so miffed in throwing money at it that he just gave up with good intent! I dont believe he knew what was going on and the noise probably went away for a short period of time like Chris explained but then come back and he thought im not spending more on this damn car! I really dont believe he intentionally tried to pull you over! thanks for sharing im sure youll get it sorted one way or another!
totally agree👍
Nah, why didn’t he take it back to the garage that did the work if the problem wasn’t fixed by them. Why would he just sell a car with that few miles if he didn’t know it was as bad as it is. He knew exactly what he was doing.
Hello to the previous owner here 😁
It could potentially have been done by the garage the old chap bought it from if it had had warranty issues, maybe?
I don't think a subscriber would sell it to you knowing that, or you'd like to think so at least. They could've sold it on FB marketplace if they were kicking the problem down the road.
Anyway, interesting video!
You 2 guys are totally honest as the day is long, pity about people who are dishonest, they must have known what they were selling you ! I bet the garage gave them a quote for the repairs or said get rid, feel sad for you guys as I said at the start you’re totally transparent. Every confidence you’ll sort it out.
1.4T with endfloat problems..
That is soooo regular, anyone in the car repair or car trade should know this by now.
Even though it would be so satisfying to call them out, you didn't. Fair play to you both. You're gents. But they know and I'm sure no trader will deal with them again. As you said, you can't win them all. Keep on being positive in a trade where most are not.
One thing that always comes to the forefront on your vids is just how knowledgeable you both are and how easy you both work together... its super to watch and thanks lads for the informative vid... sad but true... not every egg is a bird....Yoki...
I love the positive attitude lads, keep on trucking!
Well rob it happens to all of us from time to time but you have a good attitude towards it all
Love the open approach on the channel, and the positive attitude.
Always positive guys, a real inspiration for how to deal with the unforeseen. Well-done!
My daughter had the same thing luckily her car was under warranty. She ended up with a new engine & the Vauxhall dealer said there was a batch of engines that the thrust washers feel apart.

30k miles and knackered, jesus!
I think it's been absolutely thrashed on. I've commented this elsewhere but a new driveshaft at that mileage?
I wonder how many carpark burn outs it's seen for example.

I have a 2017 Astra my engine has just been replaced by the main dealer because of excessive play in the crank end float so seems like a common issue luckily it was covered by warranty for me ps great work lads amazing videos as always keep up the amazing work
Sorry to hear it’s bad news chaps.
The first time rob put his foot on the clutch and I heard the noise, I thought that would be caused by end float issues.
I had one recently with a similar issue but it was leaking oil out the front main oil seal, due to the amount of movement in the crank. Similar engine in mokka and Astra models. Such a shame.
Hopefully you find a way to get it sorted and I would be interested to see what you do to it as I haven’t repaired one yet.
Keep up the videos chaps! 👍🏼
That cars had a very hard life, I wonder if it’s had constant car park burnouts on a Saturday night with the lads,I hate dishonest people, cheers guys 👍😉💪
hmm, seems possible....
I served my apprenticeship at Opel/Vauxhall dealers in the early 80s, the old school front wheel drive clutch changes were a doddle, didn’t even use a ramp ! By the way reference the spigot bearing, I seem to remember we were told to bin it and not replace it !
I bought a 1982 3/4 ton Toyota pickup with that problem overly aggressive transmission installation can knock the thrust bearing loose. My engine detonated after 30 miles. Great looking car. Thank You so much Gentlemen for being so genuine not everyone shares the failures.
Just shows you guys can get ripped off like the public, except you both make great content and genuine in what you do. If would like to think that the subscriber didn't have the knowledge to know exactly what the fault was thinking with your skills it would be sorted easily, if they did then shame on them. You turned this Vlog into a positive with your attitudes Guys. NEEEXXXTTTTTT 😃😃
Personally id go back to the person who you had it off. Point out its an engine issue which looks diagnosed, can they offer some cash back in good faith. If they decline or ignore.. maybe they did know about it.
I think someones changed the big end shell because it had a bottom end knock .
I think it's been put back together without the thrust bearings in place .
Before you go chasing replacement engines just pull the sump and check there is thrusts in place .
Was thinking the same
I was thinking this too. It’s quite common for the thrust bearings to be forgotten.
100% missing thrust bearings. Sump down and fix it, almost there already.
Love the honesty on this channel you show the ones you win and the ones you lose
You guys are the perfect example of a working environment and a positive mindset 🏴👍🏻
The last time I dropped engines and boxes out of vauxhalls was in the 90s. Proper engines that yes did fail but were a breeze to fix. The old overhead cams, red tops etc. As soon as the mk3 cav was finished I was finished with vauxhall. Same so goes for the old 2.8 grannys/sierras and 2.0 pintos, cvhs etc. Once all those died off all we have left is generic crap from the french. My mk5 mondeo engine is just as guilty being part developed with the French. Vauxhall lost its way big time and sold their soul. One word that sends shivers through me now is hearing the word 'ecotec'
Mk1 vectras lining up in our scrapyard with not even 80 thou on the clock and 5 years old. Crying shame. Where did vauxhall go wrong
Hate it when someone rips you off! Best of luck guys
Triumph sixes were notorious for crank end float. There was a C shaped thrust washer that often fell into the sump. once this happened if you operated the clutch the crank would move 1/8" forward or even 1/4". This forced the pistons into the sides of the bores and ovality was the side effect ........ a rebore and new pistons the cure. Sometimes the crank land was so worn the crank was scrap as well. I've not known the problem with any other unit.
The old ways were the best... boy came to replace the clutch on my Mk1 Astra... did it on the driveway, he used a jack, 2 axle stands, took him all of 45mins, had a cuppa, and was on his way. There was an access plate on or near (I can't remember, it was the 90s) the bellhousing, practically changed itself.
In RSA the official time to replace the first FWD Opel Kadett's clutch was 20min.
@@JJSmith1100 that's probably right enough... It was more than a few moons ago, when I had my old, beloved Mk1 Astra. I just remember he was finished and away in less than an hour (including his cup of tea). Lol.
As far as I recall that was a feature on the F12, F14 and F16 gearboxes and likely many others where 80s and 90s Vauxhalls were concerned.
Fitted a high compression Astra 1.4 Family 0 to my ex's Nova in the early 2000s and in my haste to get the car back in one piece I actually forgot to fit the throwout bearing (I'd hired a lovely big engine hoist from HSS and it was due back in the morning and already back in bits in the back of my 16v Maestro).
Thank Christ the CR Astra F14 'box fitted had the access panel and the ability to displace the input shaft, clever Vauxhall/Opel!
Good old cassette clutch 😅
Very sad boys, these people are disgraceful admire your attitude
5:31: “What happens to them dual masses when they start wearing out, they start doing that [waves hands and wobbles head], they cause all sorts of damage” 😂😂😂
Another pointless piece of technology that causes more issues than it claims to cure.
Hello Rob and Chris, you two are so positive. It is a shame that the seller was not as honest.
I hope all work out ok for you both. Thank you for. Taking the time to upload another video. Ged.
Thank you for your honesty 👍
Had that on a 1.4 Turbo Zafira, I feared it as soon as Rob jumped in and depressed the clutch.
Just shows that people shouldn't assume low miles = good. I'd rather have a high mileage car thats been looked after, than a low mileage ragged neglected one.
Can you not get oversized thrust bearings? Or a new crank? Or get crank welded and machined back ?
Correct. I have a 2017 superb from new. Almost 170000 miles. Very molly coddled car, best of oils & parts. Never driven hard when cold, nothing neglected. My cars always go well over 250000 miles.
Exactly this I have a 2017 c4 grand picasso that has just hit 200000 miles mechanically sound interior is a bit rattly now but to be expected with this many miles , kids constantly in and out and citroen is not exactly known for its build quality
New subscriber just for your guys positivity not to mention your knowledge, I’d be livid tbh at the realisation that is not gearbox issues but a new engine especially if previous owner had to be aware and not given you full SP but you guys must off seen these type of things many times before.
That made me chuckle… not you two being ripped off, I’m gutted for you over that… 5:25
it was Robs impression of a wobbly flywheel 😂😂😂😂😂😂 it was like Kylie on crack! 😂😂
Well you pays your money and you takes your chances eh? Great attitude from you both, what's the value in getting the hump?
Have my 1998 astra 2.0 euro for 21 years already almost 268000 original kilometers on the clock .Still going strong.
As a few others have said it could be the garage that tucked up the owners.... but keep smiling and on to the next one guys.
Stay positive its only pocket money to you fellas 💰
They made you buy a vauxhall?! you were properly stitched up
BMW swapped from 2 main thrust bearings to 1 in the later B petrol engines, these wore out too quickly, caused end float and started breaking the inductive pickup for the crank sensor. The solution was to revert to 2 thrust bearings.... I wonder how much that recall cost compared to doing it right the first time. Same with the F generation steering rack debacle.
Loved the video and appreciate the honesty! Very interesting. Keep positive anyway, as you suggest.
Great positivety from you both hopefully you can spin it around great content as always 👍
