If you get behind a semi truck (don’t do this it’s unsafe) your gas mileage can triple because the semi is pushing the incoming air away.

I recently removed and cleaned the MAF sensor after I was having surges in rpm while driving 50+ MPH after I cleaned it and installed it, car is running like a champ

Run your car through a scanner and check if there are any codes for the sensors related to fuel concentration mixtures.
I had a check engine light turn on in my old 2004 Suzuki, went for a scan and I had codes for the bank 1 sensor 1 oxygen sensor, the IAT sensor and the TPS. I was broke so I drove it around for a month or so and in the meantime went from having to full a tank every two weeks to having to do so every 4-5 days on the same route. As soon as I could I changed the oxygen sensor, the check engine light turned off and gas mileage improved but still not as good I remember. I have yet to replace the IAT sensor and TPS, I know I have to cause I had ran the car through a scanner, but without the check engine light that turned on for the oxygen sensor I wouldn't have known I had trouble with multiple sensors.
TLDR - Scan your car as you might have some sensors not properly doing their job yet not turning on your check engine light.
Convert the car to a hybrid.
I personally prefer the simplicity of those '70s-era vehicles. The fuses were easy to replace and there were no sensors snitching on everything.

Sensors are a double edge sword... they are great when they trip a code or allow you to graph data to help you to quickly zero in on a problem... they are a royal pain when they fail to throw a code and it turns out the sensor is causing the problem... especially intermittent problems.

dad has a 65 gmc panel. 305e v6. we cant kill it. no sensers. its got over 600k. change oil. its a tank. maybe gm made things right back then
A friend had an intermittent malfunction. The engine would cut at random times. After a 10mn wait, it would start. His local mechanic said it was the injectors that had to be changed for a small fortune (didn't make sense to me). The Peugeot dealer, having the monopoly of the proprietary equipment, wanted to charge him 500 euro just to plug in his diagnostics computer. We bought a Chinese knockoff and plugged it into the OBD2 that just gave us an error code number because it was a nonstandard alarm. We looked it up on the internet, it was a sensor in the fuel filter that detects water and cuts the injection pump to protect it. If he went over a bumpy road, the water that had decanted at the bottom of the fuel filter would mix and the sensor would detect it and cut the injection pump. Waiting 10mn, the water would settle at the bottom of the fuel filter and the car would start. Cost of repairs, a 50 Euro diesel filter. I am glad my VW 1.9 tdi just uses a simple diesel filter, no sensors, that I change every 2 oil changes. I also drain a little of it every now and then. In our humid and variable weather, we can get a lot of water condensation in the fuel tanks. On planes, part of preflight checks is to purge water from the wing tanks. I do it every time before flights.
Keep your gas tanks at least half full. Less condensation. A chemical is sold that to help remove the water in gas; ask your parts store.
I spent $64 for an OBD and use it. I get random codes mostly ABS for whatever reason. I reset it with the phone as I'm driving. Beats sky high shop bills.
Idk how knowing about car sensors will get me 2x the gas mileage on my car but it was informative nonetheless

I'd happily go back to pre-sensor days. I understood everything I was looking at and most repairs to mechanical systems could be done by the average home mechanic in his own driveway.
Sensors increase the failure rates for the vehicle.
Any part that isn't directly making the car operate is a part that isn't necessary and can fail. I'd give my left one for a car that only had the essential go parts and some headlights.

Yup, my neighbor had a diesel Mercedes Benz SUV. $3,000 in sensors and soon all the fault codes came back! I'll stick with my 1995 e300 diesel, and Cummins 4BT.

No, somebody who actually knows how to drive and pays attention when behind the wheel. In other words, no multi-tasking. Save that for when you get where you're going. JMO.

Not really. Modern cars are far more reliable and efficient than older cars despite their complexity. It used to be commonplace to see cars broken down on the side of the road with steam pouring out of them, or to carry a spare fanbelt and water at all times. Also modern cars are orders of magnitude safer, and that's an "improvement" that cannot be argued with.

Check the mileage numbers. It only goes up to 99999. Because they didn't expect the car to last that long.
More electronics are more failure points. But they are incredibly reliable and easy to diagnose. Plug in an OBD reader and you're good.
The car reliablity peaked at 1990 to 2000.
That's partly true but not entirely. The improvements that have made cars more reliable has as much to do with better quality standards as it does with proliferating sensors, probably more. Now instead of a gas pedal connected to a throttle with a cable you have a sensor on the gas pedal sending a signal to a computer which then sends signals to the throttle valve and the fuel injection system. You have a servo on the throttle valve and I'm not sure what on the fuel injector system. That's a lot of things to go wrong. And now because of all that garbage when you stomp on the gas pedal you have to wait a second or two for the thing to think about what it's supposed to do before it actually accelerates. Never had that problem before. Now you have built-in GPS units that eventually are going to start tattling on you when you speed or don't stop at a stop sign. I would not be at all surprised if they are already being used for telling patrol officers where to set up speed traps. These insurance companies that are trying to get people to voluntarily allow their driving to be constantly monitored in order to get a better price on their insurance are just conditioning people for accepting compulsory monitoring.
You have to go back quite a ways to get to that. We had a peek I think in the 90s and early 2000s maybe when car manufacturers were trying to get away from their bad reputation for crappy cars and started really making good vehicles which was reflected in their 10-year hundred thousand mile drivetrain warranties. Those have been coming back down for a while now and we're seeing a lot more problems.
Plus the more these vehicles are run by computers the harder it is for people to work on their own vehicles to cut costs and I'm pretty sure that was the intention of the manufacturers all along. Prices for parts and for labor and diagnostics etc etc are just plain ridiculous now.

Yeah it's pretty crazy just how much wind resistance lowers your mpg.
Not really all them 30km/h retard zoned are causing me to pollute more than some years before where i could drive the same road with 60km/h.
There are exceptions to that rule. A few years ago I bought an immaculate bmw 320i (1987) 2 litre 6 cylinder with 130 BHP. Best consumption possible was 35mpg at 85 mph
Simply not true
Every car I've owned I would always do a two week test to see how the MPG fluctuated based on my driving. The first week would be doing the speed limit and the second week would be at 5mph over the speed limit. It's amazing how much of a difference the mpg is with just 5mph difference! Rural and highway driving is also much more efficient than city driving.
I had a sensor go wrong which made it so the transmission wouldn't go out of second gear and the speedometer go to zero. Fun times. One downside to sensors is instead of telling you it detects a problem, it will instead compensate for it by readjusting settings until, instead of having a small, inexpensive problem to fix, you have a large very expensive problem.
I used to have a JKU that was eating wheel speed sensors. In 2017 I bought a JKU & lifted it as you do. About 4 months later, the traction control light came on & I lost cruise control driving from LA to Bakersfield. My OBD2 said it was a wheel speed sensor, so I replaced it. 2 weeks later, the sensor went out again, so I cleaned it & greased the connections. It was fine for about a month till it happened again. After chasing the problem, I found it was a bad wire all the way up the line. I replaced the sensor & the wireing harness to it.
I also had a 98 Dodge Dakota that had the transmission input & output sensor go bad when the crank shaft sensor died at the same time. I ignored it because I was broke & the whole thing sized up.
We are going to have a Generation that start their vehicle with a touch on their Cell Phones & never have to know how to drive a car or pick up truck. Yes this is great for the Disabled. I am so thankful I have a Pick Up Truck with a few lights that go on the Dash Board if something is up. Just not hard wired for every sensor they can put on. Have a friend that cost a fortune to replace a few sensors on his car. Just to much. Thankful I have been driving since I was 10 years old & there is never an issue with put'n a key in the start & shiifting gears & driving. What a world today we have!
If you don't clean the MAF sensor on a 5.4 triton V8 regularly, it'll fry the catalytic covertors.

On my mum's previous car, a 2004 K12 Nissan Micra, the reverse sensor in the transmission/gearbox went bad and the check engine light came on, Nissan replaced it for her and it was fine again after that.

My takeaway is to scan your car as you might have codes for gas mileage related sensors that are not turning on your check engine light.
Change your sensors (02 senor, Maf senor), get new fuel injectors, maybe get a new fuel pump/fuel filter, change your spark plugs n get a oil change. Hopefully doing all these will help

I have 2 trip meters in my Honda Ridgeline , A & B. I use the A trip meter between fuel ups and reset it every time I fill up. This helps me calculate fuel mileage. The B trip I use for oil change intervals. Of course I reset this one after an oil change.
Same for my accord

If you keep a notepad in the car and write down your mileage at every fill up you can calculate your fuel economy for each fill up as well as keep a running history of fuel your economy

Hi Scotty, I drive a 2015 Ford Kuga (Escape). The only problem I have with this car is frequently changing the brake sensors. During these six years I've had to change the sensor on each wheel twice. 😱
I had a 1993 Ford Windstar minivan in 2007 and the check engine light illuminated so I took it to Sear's Automotive they said it was a bad oxygen sensor replaced it reset the computer. A day later the light came on again same code for a bad oxygen sensor and found a downstream oxygen sensor replaced it reset the computer and low and behold a day later a repeat.
This time they went over the entire exhaust system and found the V6 engine on the Windstar had two upstream and two downstream oxygen sensors which surprised Sear's Automotive.
I bet Sears Auto was surprised at alot of things

Long story short my oxygen sensor has been bad I have a code that I could read and I never knew what it did and my mileage has decreased to 13 it was hit like 14 so thank you so much for explaining this I will get it fixed Scotty Kilmer

I came back from work around July of this year in the evening, only to wake up the next morning, start my car and hear a terrible knocking noise from the engine. A scan showed that there was a valve timing error in the engine but who knows. My car has been parked at home ever since because the mechanics say that I will need a completely new engine replacement and the engine cannot be repaired. Its a 2008 Honda Accord.
My 2002 Nissan Pathfinder (160K miles) began having the Check Engine light flash at me, and then it began running rough. Took it in, had it checked out, one of the coils went bad. Had it replaced, issue solved.
Just got P0131 on my 07 Forester X. After replacing the air/fuel ratio sensor (O2 sensor upstream of the cat) it runs SO MUCH BETTER

When you pointed to O2 threads figured you meant using the old anti fowl plug extender. I've read you can put one in the O2 bung or nut then put the O2 sensor in that to keep it out of the full exhaust stream. It's old school but probably works. I know you've heard or done that before, I'm as old school as you are my friend !!!

My Catalytic converter was stolen and I put a after market one on it, It works great on highway but when it is in the city, it eats the gas a lot because I read catalytic converter error all the time from the engine and oxigen sensor doesn't read correct value. DONT BUT AFTER MARKET CATALYTIC CONVERTER.
*I love having three 2nd generation Lexus gs300's ( 00, 02, 04 ) that has creature comforts that rival a 2021 car. Especially because my dashes, and infotainment are upgraded Lol*

I really like the new technology that is available in the newer cars but; I do miss the simplicity of the older cars somewhat.
My first car, a Chevrolet Nova was quite simple, although it left me stranded on more than one occasion. I knew nothing as far as working on cars.
One time my car stopped, I open up the hood to see all my wiring sizzle and melt. As I said car was quite simple. I go to parts store buy some 16 gauge wire and rewire the entire car in less than 30 minutes, I don't think I can do that today.
I bought a new Volvo XC60 last year and it has sensors galore. My Volvo C70 has less but; more fun to drive

So I bought a 2001 2,7i Sonata, at the time I didn’t know about the throttle sensor, and the engine, just sent the revs up to 2500rpm from startup.
Not the best Way to start the morning drive.
Luckily the dealer was very nice and the part was cheap, tried to install it myself, but it was stuck on pretty good, but the mechic at the dealer spent 10-20 min helping and Got me a new screw, free of charge.
So I ended up driving it about 50000miles, trouble free after that, Theo I parked it for 12 months, and sold it.
Still miss it.
But all that “panic” do to such a small part…😱😱😂😂

An overabundance of electronic sensors in modern vehicles tend to numb drivers with a false sense of security, and a belief that regular maintenance and pre-trip walk around visual inspections are no longer required

I have a 2010 Silverado 2500 with a fuel vacuum system small air leak code. Gas caps changed multiple times. Front and rear sensors changed twice, smoke checked, vacuum checked, pressure checked - no leaks or causes found, other than from my wallet. The worse part of it all, the code won't allow my remote start system to operate. For over 50 years, I have been a GM guy. NO MORE!!!

My gas gauge says empty when it’s full and full when empty on a 2007 Chevy Malibu. I get 45 mpg on the highway so I can go real far before I have to fill up again

I had a check engine light turn on, had codes for the b1s1 oxygen sensor, IAT sensor and TPS. Changed the oxygen first, have yet to deal with the other 2 sensors and yet the check engine light turned off. So you might be driving your car with bad sensors that are not tripping your check engine light and thus your engine is probably running rich or lean.
Did I miss it? Do what to get twice the gas mileage? Buy a car with sensor’s?

So how did older vehicles function without these? How did a carburated 70s vehicle keep driving in hot/cold temperatures with no air intake temperature sensor and no gas temperature sensor when the air/gas changed their density? Did it still work well enough and these sensors are just an improvement in efficiency but not strictly necessary for function? Or would you simply not drive a car back in the 70s if the temperature was outside a certain range?
The most annoying sensors I've experienced are the Suzuki parking & proximity ones. My own car is a Toyota Hilux, a fairly simple, comfortable and reliable truck with very few useless electronics, but my wife's Suzuki Splash is a beeping and buzzing nightmare of pointless "safety" tech that doesn't actually help much anyway, just makes me wanna hit it with a sledgehammer every time I have to maneuver that stupid little car in and around the parking lot.
Sensors are also being used to limit what you can do with your own vehicle and make you have to do redundant and stupid things in order to make it work. My Chrysler Pacifica won't allow you to start the motor without first depressing the brake pedal. Never mind that it's already in park and even when the parking brake is set. It's beyond stupid.

I have a 2018 Ram 1500 Express with the 5.7 hemi. When I bought the truck it had 12,664 miles on it. It now just turned 40,000.
I've done my oil changes tire rotation and alignment. I have used royal purple injection cleaners changed air filters and normal maintenance.
Why did my gas mileage go from 18.5 to 20 mpg. Down to 15.5 to 16.5?
I drive the same 40 miles round trip every day to and from work. Just don't get it. No lights, warnings or anything else shown up to say something it wrong.

We used to know the car was overheating when we saw steam rising from the hood. Then we would systematically go about finding the dead water pump.
The biggest problem with all of these sensors is the computer. If your computer dies; it will do so, and give no warning of it's future death.
I had this happen to me in my truck. Was at a light; engine died, couldn't restart it nor jump it. Just had to tow it, and pay over $600 dollars for a new computer.
In the end, give me a old truck and the environment be damned.
I had one with a manual pull on choke and the high beam button on the floor. Simpler days.

A failed speed sensor caused my speedometer to register zero, a minor problem, but the same speed sensor was connected to the automatic transmission. When the transmission stopped receiving speed information, it shifted into Limp Home Mode and refused to shift out of 2nd Gear manually.
A repeatedly bad camshaft sensor would result in the engine refusing to go above 2300 RPM. When the engine hit 2300 RPM, it would go into a stall and the engine sounded like it was knocking.
A repeatedly bad crankshaft sensor caused the car to stall while starting and also while driving at slow speeds.
A bad oxygen sensor necessitated a repair to pass a government emissions test.
Some sort of a bad fuel sensor was causing the engine to stall occasionally while waiting at a stop.
Bad tire pressure monitoring sensors caused a warning to appear on the dashboard, which to fix requires replacing all of the sensors inside the wheels at a cost of more than $400.
Cars seemed to work fine before all of these sensors and "safety" schemes, and they were much easier and cheaper to fix.

Decided to change my thermostat seeing it is 13 years old. Bought a superstat by mistake and caused my sensors to go bad after putting the original one back in. Running lean.
I didn't know my speed control sensor controlled so much, i accidentally hit some brush and it did something that caused almost every light on my infinity G37X to come on,
Sensors are emissions it’s only a coincidence that a smooth running engine also pollutes less
You said about white smoke, would the engine stop the white smoke when it reaches running temperature, if those sensors are going bad?

Roll it downhill with engine off to get best mileage.

Kinda unrelated but I gotta love driving my car when it needs a new valve cover gasket. Oil drips down onto the exhaust and burns up, causing it to smoke slightly. Problem is I can't have any fan on in my car without the car filling with smoke, which sucks cause it's the middle of winter. I need my heat....🥲
cut a hole in the hood to let the fumes out. Or...they make engine honey that will seal things up.
I’ve seen sensors cause the check engine light to come on. When checking the sensor was dirty.
My 30 year old truck has a LOT of sensors too - I'm the driver!!

Oh ya the good old sensors I can't recall anytime that they saved me from catastrophic failer on my kia got no lights or anything the engine just dyed got it replace now after a year im having issues with it stalling/ surging dont know what it is it does it real bad if I turn the ac on or defrost.
Don't use adaptive cruise control, that will definitely give you better gas mileage.
