  • In this video I help to clarify and share the differences between a CNS which is a clinical nurse specialist and a nurse educator. When doing my research, I found it very challenging to tell the differences between the 2 so I thought I would do a video to help those out who is also doing their research as well.

Oh my gosh! It's SO crazy you posted this today. Yesterday I began researching the CNS role a bit more and something about being in the research side of things is super interesting to me. I just did my first policy review for my clinical ladder and actually kind of enjoyed it! I'm still super new, I have only been in NICU for about 2 years. My plan is to take advance core and RNC-NIC this Fall and then begin looking at beginning a ADN to BSN program, so I have a while to think about it and if that's maybe where I want to go. Clinical Educator is also an interest of mine because I do enjoy teaching as well! So both roles are DEFINITELY on my radar for where I may be headed in 5 or so years! Thanks for posting this, Tiffany!

I’m torn. I have been leaning more towards the Clinical Nurse Educator. However, I got accepted to the Clinical Nurse Specislist program last Friday. I am going to shadow a couple of Clinical Nurse Specialists one day this week and ask a bunch of questions to help me decide.

Nice video Tiffany. Many people are confused about the CNS and educator role. CNS’s can choose how they practice as an Advanced Practice Nurse. So some are research focused, some are clinical focused, etc. As a CNS my priority is to improve patient outcomes through the three spheres of influence (patient & family, nurses and nursing practice, and the health system)

Hey Tiffany, FYI a CNS is an APRN and does require a masters degree. Their scope varies according to state. Some states they have full practice authority and others they do not.
