As a seasoned nurse, I would not recommend putting a copy of your nursing license or certifications in a portfolio. These are things that should be asked on a job application. With identity theft, someone could take your portfolio and pass it off as their own. If you are offered the job and you accept, then HR will verify your license with the board of nursing anyway and ask for copies of your certifications, etc. All this will be done via email. If you think that after an interview a portfolio is kept, think again. Most of them end up in the trash. If you want to bring a portfolio with you, then ask the person interviewing if they would like to keep the portfolio. If they are interested in you, then they will want a copy. A portfolio can be a nice thing to do but a good resume is also key. The best advice I can give you is to be yourself in the interview, answer honestly, and most importantly do your research into the organization and the unit and keep an open mind. Otherwise, Nurse Blake good job on the video.
“Do your research” LOL I got asked why I applied to the place I was interviewing for and I said it was because I applied to it online and you answered WHOOPS
28 year Nurse. Great TIPS. Be Authentic and Gemuine! I cam sense when hiring. I also want to know that you're result oriented! Not just a hard worker. I pray you have a long rewarding career!!!
In a way, I am lucky because I finished a very good nursing school and I live in a country where there are a lot more nursing positions than actual nurses. I got hired .... on the spot. The interview was pretty extensive and included questions about every aspect of the care. Medication, nursing techniques, nursing assessments and DX, teamwork, patient (they don't use patient but Person) and family interactions, care plan, tine management and care priority. They even gave me a test to calculate Rx, to make a treatment plan for some types of wounds etc. My interview felt more like a final exam to be honest. In all this mess there was a question that got me hired : how do you approach a clinical situation? The answer they were looking for is basically is a 17th century ideea: the scientific method ( observation, hypothesis via induction etc). The patient centered care is a big deal and the author of the video is right. Most modern nursing schools provide a care model with the Person and his needs at the center. So just integrate the model that you used in school in your interview and you will be fine. Another big deal in an interview is how you deal with conflicts. Healthcare system is a high stress environment and they want to make sure you can navigate this stress without becoming a problem for the org.
Thank you for this video! I’ve watched it a couple times and took notes. Lol. I’m a “seasoned” nurse, at the same job for 16 years. Today I had a job interview for an outpatient OB office. I felt very prepared and got an email about an hour later to come and meet everyone in the office! Thanks!!
Great tips. I had a phone interview for a MSICU position & even though I didn’t get the position (they wanted experience) the recruiter sent my resume directly to a nurse manager of another unit & told me to expect a response within a week as the position hasn’t even been posted yet. Thanks ❤️
Nurse Blake: Your interviewing tips would not only work well not only in nursing, but for other professional positions as well. I have been on both sides of the desk many times. My number one tip: BE POSITIVE! If you cannot be positive with the interview at hand, it’s probably not going to work. Be positive! Be yourself!
Hey Nurse Blake, I watched your video a day before my RN Residency interview. It was really nerve wrecking because it was my first interview! A day after the interview, I got a call that I got the job in L&D unit!!!!! This is crazy since they initially told me that they will get back to me after two weeks. Thanks so much for your help.
I want to emphasize the thank you letter. I've been an RN, (and have my MSN) for 14 years and the only time I was ever not offered a position was when I forgot to send a thank you note.
jenrnmom I have a question about that: everyone is saying thank you notes are great and I want to get on that train...but where/how do you send a hand-written thank you note? Would I include it to the small stack of papers I hand to them with my portfolio? Would I mail to the hospital’s unit? Would I personally give it to the unit the day after the interview? I know it seems like a silly question, but I live an hour away from the nearest hospital so everything I do that involves going to town requires planning & strategy. Thanks in advance.
THIS! I had a phone interview and I sent my first ever thank you e-mail to the person who I had the interview with. It was a simple but thankful quick e-mail and it really pushed me forward through the interview process. Pretty sure it gave me some brownie points.
Thank you so much Nurse Blake!!! I listened to this right before my interview for a position on the Oncology Unit and they offered me the job!!! So excited to start my first job as an RN!!
I'm not a nursing student & have no plans to be one; yet, I just watched this interview tips video in its entirety! 😆 I think Nurse Blake's advice could apply to any career interview setting! ❤ Nurse Blake rocks both his comedic & his serious videos! 🎸
Thanks for the video content! Sorry for chiming in, I would appreciate your thoughts. Have you heard about - Schallingora Information Investigation Scheme (Have a quick look on google cant remember the place now)? It is an awesome exclusive product for learning what you need to say to get hired in a job interview minus the hard work. Ive heard some incredible things about it and my friend at very last got amazing results with it.
“Practice to get your thoughts together” is well said. I started going over questions I might be asked in a job interview and how I would respond. This helped to jog my memory about my nursing experiences that I don’t think about in my day-to-day routine.
I made my portfolio today :) First RN interview tomorrow 🙏 Hope you're staying safe and thank you for all your videos! You helped me get through school and laugh on some of the toughest days! 😀
Hey Blake, Thanks so much for the video. I had an interview at a rehab hospital recently and did terrible because I had added stress of something else going on, lack of sleep, nerves and I just was unable to think of examples during those specific example questions. I just got called for an interview on friday for a temporary complex care position. Im trying so hard to be prepared this time around. Thank you for your tips Blake.
I can't even tell you, how much you and Nurse Sarah motivate me to study right after watching urs and her videos, thank you both thank you sooooo much, I'm going to open my books right away.
This video helped me a ton! Nurse Blake is the best. I definitely used it to help me prepare for a new grad position interview and I got the job!!! I’m so lucky and incredibly grateful for all you contribute to the nursing world.
You are the bomb nurse Blake! Thanks for the awesome tips and guidance. Though I am a confident nurse I get very nervous on interviews and exams. However, the more exposure and preparation I have to these things the easier it has become. The more I am in control and not my nerves! lol.
Nurse Blake : Watching your channel from Switzerland 🇨🇭. Very interesting and applicable and I thank you so much for sharing your ideas and suggestions how
Tbh I have given so many interviews but still I always up to this video before going for an interview lol. Maybe it’s my good luck charm that I crack all of it..
Hi Blake I did these tips, but I feel I did overkill, the interview was only 30 min long. I showed confidence, intrigue and showed desire for growth etc. I feel I bombed it. I don't know what to think because I hope I didn't come off as aggressive. I have a strong personality, but as a man you would be praised for this; I feel I am not as a woman.
Just a word of encouragement: Remember that Jesus loves you and He's coming soon. If you have not made a decision to follow Him, don't wait because tomorrow is promised to no one. Satan wants us to believe we have all the time in the world, when we actually don't. Even he knows his time is short (Revelation 12:12) Lastly, the National Sunday Law is about to be enforced upon us. It involves the Mark of the Beast. The Beast is a religious & political system, which includes the Pope and his followers. Their sign of authority or seal is Sunday observance because they claim to have authority over the Bible and they admit that Sunday worship is their mark of great power. (Revelation 13:6) (see Catholic Record, Sept.1, 1923). They will seek to enforce worship on all. (See Revelation 13). IT is their plan to force all to come together, and to worship on the 1st day of the week (Sunday) and have that as the ONLY DAY of worship. They want everyone to forsake God's law which includes keeping the Sabbath, and accept man's tradition. When it is *enforced*, and people accept Sunday worship INSTEAD of accepting the Seventh Day Sabbath (Saturday) as the Lord's Day and only true day of worship, they will receive the mark of the Beast. The system seeks to promote false worship. So because Sunday sacredness is their mark of power; God's seal is found only one place, and it's in His 10 commandments, specifically the 4th (see Exodus 20:8-11; Revelation 14:7; Revelation 7:1-4) Why: It tells us the Name, the Title and Territory. Name: Lord thy God Title: Creator Territory: Heaven and Earth. So only those who truly love God will keep all His commandments and will be sealed for Him, for eternity. (See Revelation 12:17) So, it's our duty to keep God's ten commandments, including the 4th which talks about the Sabbath because in the end, we have to chose 1 side. Those who receive God's seal will be saved and those who receive the mark of the Beast will be destroyed eternally. It has always been about worship. Now is the time to be serious about our soul, and not to believe in false doctrine, but to accept God's truth from the Bible (see Isaiah 8:20). By God's grace, let us be ready for the time that is just before us.
