There's not a driver shortage there is a pay shortage.

For a little over a month and a half we've been essential. What happens when the Corona virus pandemic is over, and we're not essential anymore? Naw, we need to get through this shit and take a look at what we're doing for a pittance. The next emergency they will have gotten the message that we're not going to be exploited anymore! Every driver who shows up on time, maintains his equipment, doesn't tear it up should make at least 30% of the gross of what that truck makes.

There is no way a self driving truck works. Driving is not the onlything drivers do like straping down a load or pulling a fithweel pin

    Just a couple of things.
1: Australia already has trailers moving around autonomously, they're called road trains.
2: There is not a shortage of drivers. There's a shortage of drivers who will work for shit. Ask anyone from the public if they'd work for the pay / hours that we do and if you make an honest mistake you don't get paid for the last week or so. I already know the answer.
3: If governments around the world were serious about all this eco friendly transport they would be backing it all the way.
It's sad to think that our future is in doubt when it comes to innovation that could actually help.
    Keep on truckin.
    We carry this planet.
    👍😎🤘

Regarding your first point: The Australian "road train" is identified as such because of its resemblance to an actual train. - 16 or more trailers, extending 180 to 300 meters, all pulled by a single unit; which is driven by a man. Nothing autonomous about it.

There are 1.3 million CDL holders in the US. Only 750,000 other have a job where they use their CDL's. There is no driver shortage, only a shortage of respectful employers.

    Electric trucks: ain't gonna happen

    • @brandonplaisted8194

They said the same about CNG Trucks 10 yrs ago. But nope nothing conquers diesel fuel power. Cng trucks i hated driving a cng truck no torque when climbing a hill. And down hill you had to go half the speed down the hill compared to a diesel motor.

    • @jansen7640
      @jansen7640 4 ปีที่แล้ว +6

@@brandonplaisted8194 the problem with electric trucks is that electric motors are like super super inefficient while towing a heavy weight. So allot of batteries are required to power the motors for at least 500 miles. But the batteries add allot of weight and will reduce the amount it will eventually be allowed to tow.

@@jansen7640 Notice that those Tesla Semis that were hauled back from cold weather testing were loaded one per trailer. One each on a trailer that can haul at least 50,000 lbs. What does that tell you about the weight? They have to be way way way to heavy to ever make economic sense

I cant some of the newer trucks already such as the volvo's Lt's, International 7400, Casadia's etc. this is why i try to film the good trucks now. I hate what trucking has become and what it will be.

There's a good chance things will get better, cabovers are coming back, both old and new, and a lot of companies are beginning to restore older trucks and out them back to work. A company near me recently paired a younger driver with an ancient Autocar AT64F, and I've seen a few B Model Macks working in the western part of my state. Drivers want more autonomy to make their own decisions and drive what they want, and the way to go to have that happen is to work for small companies.

    Thanks for video.
    Interesting.
I think a driver is always needed but having auto pilot would be good sometimes to rest and give the concentration energy a break.
We are pushed so hard sometimes and every vehicle on road is at risk to a accident or death.
How do you monitor and trust every vehicle around you.
    Thats the big question.
Everyone has a different mindset driving on the same road.

The only reason there is a driver shortage is because the companies don't want to pay a living wage.

shortage of drivers, huh go figure! 1960s,70s and the 80s, driver got good treatment and some respect, now its low pay high cost of living on the road, high content of regulation and enforcement. cars, s.u.v.s and pickups give us little courtesy and sometimes just play games with truckers. they want well stocked stores but dont want trucks around! epa regs def burners and the like. think we can stop on a dime, they dont understand our brakes are 1970s technology with a crap antilock system. they went automatic to get any idiot to drive one but lots more to driving one than shifting gears.

This is the worst idea to place a driver at a middle position. Sure, he needs to see into two monitors! Three are better. But this is Musk's problem, not driver's one )))

I’m surprised there are so many truckers that insist that trucks aren’t going full automation. The writing is on the wall. It’s clearly not a matter of if, just when.
The number one most expensive overhead of any company is staffing. Employees expect a fair wage and benefits. With automated trucks that eliminates the expense of having to pay and provide benefits for employees. The video clearly shows companies spending time, money, research and resources to make automated semis become a reality. They will have plenty of data to prove the cost savings of automated trucks.
I feel bad for truckers. The job they once loved is getting worse and worse. Automation isn’t just a threat to truckers, it’s going to replace many jobs and careers.
Automated trucks don’t have to take breaks, eat or need to sleep. There’s already data showing that automation eliminates human error and they will have hard data to prove that they are in fact better drivers than humans.
Why would someone want to get into a career that’s about to become obsolete?
