Hey Lockstin- I watched a theory a while back that suggested that the reason Sonic doesn't catch up to Eggman isn't that he's slower but rather giving himself enough distance to react to any traps Eggman may spring on him. Say... a spike trap out of the ground like in Collision Chaos. (I wish I could remember where that theory was from though,)

As far as I know, some iterations of Sonic could easily just pop next to eggman and finish him off, but he chooses not to because he has an adrenaline addiction. Fighting eggman is the only thing that fuels that need, so he lets him get away every time.

I may sound like a fanboy for saying this but It would be blasphemous for any character to run faster than sonic in a game where running speed varies between characters.
I personally ascribe to the whole "Eggman has cybernetic legs" theory, because the theory you described in the majority of the video is incompatible with the canon information provided about Sonic himself - we HAVE rough frames of reference for Sonic's speed - his base form is capable of reaching the speed of sound in seconds and in Super Sonic form, he's capable of nearing, if not exceeding the speed of light - which is a constant (in a vacuum, anyway, which is where he uses the form frequently, such as in Doomsday Zone in Sonic & Knuckles). If Sonic's speed is an established value, perception isn't a factor. Fun concept though.

You ever done distance running? Sometimes I've gotten to the point where it feels like I'll die if I stop running and it's easier just to let my legs go on autopilot even though stopping from running would be the start of rest and therefore less energy being used. Sonic does get tired, he sleeps 8 hours and takes naps throughout the day. That said, in Sonic Frontiers he can run just as fast while being affected by the corruption. Maybe he just got stronger.
I always figured that Eggman running so fast was one of those cartoony things, like when a character gets scared and runs for the hills, leaving behind big dust clouds along their path. Couple that with the frightened Eggman running faster than Sonic, and that's just comedy. Eggman is the fastest thing alive, but only when he's scared. Probably has to do with that "burst energy" thing you mentioned too.
Next time: "How Tall is Sonic, Really?" Seriously, his canon height has always been 3'1", but modern Sonic is clearly taller than classic. Heck, in crossovers, he's even a little taller than Mario.
Maybe a little bit taller than Mario... Even though he has really long legs,but not as lanky as Luigi. It depends on what Mario your talking about. Mario from the M&L series is very long,Mario vs Dk series has him as tall as Pauline (in some parts not all),and Mario from the kart Series and early 2000's was very lanky. Also Sonic is kind of getting shorter and a little fat so this opinion would be outdated by the time 2021 roles by.
Lockstin, as a long time fan of both you and the game theorists, I'm saying this for your own good: You do NOT want to question Sonic the Hedgehog's speed.
Actually Mantis Shrimp don't see more colours than humans. It seems that they don't do image processing (contrary to most animals) and thus fail to distinguish different shades that humans can separate (if they are part of thei...our color spectrum, since Mantis Shrimp see in more wavelengths). So Mantis Shrimp see less colours but some different ones than humans.
Gravity doesn't slow down time, it slows down things so it looks like it is slowing down time. For example, you run slower when you have m,ore weight on you. And not just humans, cars, ships, anything with mass, which includes molecules. Also, speed based on metabolic rate is a correlation. It just happens that animals that move faster tend to have faster metabolic rates. And because they move faster, their brains create different neural pathways to process information faster. Plus, the tiny brain thing you mentioned. Then there are other animals that barely move, so seeing time faster would just be a big waste of relative time for them. So they evolved slower neural pathways.
I think Eggman has robo legs. There’s other things that would be faster than humans that Sonic has out ran. Plus only Robo Legs can hold up Eggman’s belly.
I'm really glad you posted this. I've recently been storyboarding and outlining a story to write about a character who actually has a dramatically higher CFFF than other humans and so I've been doing a ton of research myself into how this all works. It's really interesting stuff
It's just cartoon logic... Eggy isn't really fast... he's just cartooning away... it doesn't actually mean anything... it just shows that plot is more powerful than the characters themselves.

Great video! I had always though that Sonic sees the world faster and we are playing him through his perspective. If I remember correctly, the last Sonic video about his speed mention something like that he just took easy on Eggman because he's really not wanting to kill him and therefore run slower for Eggman, giving him a chance to live.

I know that this was just an excuse to teach us things, which is cool n' all, but Sonic simply perceiving the world differently from us doesn't make any sense when you consider the terrain that Sonic is running on. Sonic's perception of time wouldn't allow him to run through a loop-dee-loop, no matter how you slice it. But, I did learn something, so whatever.
I think the real reason is that if sonic caught up to eggman then there wouldn't be a final boss. And the devs just didn't think about the consequences of having eggman outrun sonic for a few seconds. Said consequences being, nerds debating weather or not sonic is actually fast over 25 years later.
According to some sonic comics, the reason why he is fast and looks the way he is because eggman gave him running shoes and he ran on a treadmill. Note that sonic was already fast before then, so adding more speed to him caused the treadmill to explode, turning him blue, and he also redesigned his shed to what we now know as today.
No one ever considers that Sonic is just not running as fast as he could be because he doesn't want to actually kill Eggman and just wants to end his plans.
Anyone else remember the first few videos Lockstin/Gnoggin did on Sonic's Speed. and how Sonic CD was only time we ever see sonic actually moving at a decent speed.

The problem with trying to apply relativity to Sonic is that the laws of gravity and relativity are more of guidelines. In both Colors and Lost world, we see prime examples of this with the black hole during Terminal Velocity and the Indigo Asteroid power.
In some continuities, Robotnik has even been a robot himself at some points. So robot legs aren't really too much of a stretch. But I like the idea that Eggman is just *really* good at sprinting.
One other thing to consider is that Sonic's displayed speeds are not his actual speed in the games. If you can find them, there are some pretty interesting short clips of the prototype Sonic test level from when they were working out mechanics for the first game. They were largely unplayable because he could move far faster than the human reaction speed could reach, which for a platformer is a problem. His initial speed was either five or ten times faster than what showed up in the game. You have several games where they display an MPH for Sonic, and you also have the cutscenes that show him as much faster than you can play him as. For Robotnik, robotic legs fits, as does a few other theories...and that you'd have a ratings problem for a human getting pummeled.
Interesting science, but for the actual answer, I think it's just that Eggman's only able to outpace Snoic over short distances, and I think it comes down to Eggman accelerating faster; Eggman keeps pace basically because Snenc's still getting up to speed, and then by the time Sinoc would get to cruising speed, Eggman's already in his next mech. It's possible that it's a matter of distance, and Zanax would run rings (pun totally intended) around Eggman if the race was particularly far. Also, it's probably not that substantial of a difference; Snanac the Hodgeheg may be faster long-term, but even if Eggman's the slower of the two he's still ludicrously fast for a human.
Ah. Shoe sponsor. That explains the random Sonic. I've always imagined Sonic's speed in the games as a thing of relativity. Either that or things are scaled up, because games. It could seem like small levels he runs through, but maybe they're long to the characters. Like traveling in RPGs. Though, in stuff like the sports games, he plays it down for fairness. Same with those with absurd strength, like Knuckles. That said, at least in the comics, Sonic's shoes _are_ magic. Sort of. They're specially made so they don't wear out in an instant from his running. Not exactly enhancers. And modern age Robotnik/Eggman _is_ a bit cybernetic. Or was. I'm hazy on the details.
Close, Archie/SatAM continuity Robotnik is killed deader than dead in the Endgame storyline and eventually replaced by a previously one-off alternate reality version who used the roboticization process (minus the enslavement bit) on himself and conquered his own reality, then due to boredom decided to handle Mobius Prime's version of Sonic where his native (as in belonging to, not Aborignal) counterpart failed. Then promptly got wrecked successively by Sonic who even ran so fast to hold reality together that he permanently transformed from his Classic design to his Modern. Also there's that time that Classic Archie!Sonic scooped water into a ball and threw it before physics could react.
That's part of why I said "modern age," as the living blob from original Archie/SatAM had a robo-arm and little else before being sent to the void. Eggman 2.0 was roboticized, then turned flesh at some point, then I think had robot bits installed. And, yeah, Sonic in the comics had crazy speed. One of my favorite moments was near the end of the run. He went cross country in a rage, trying to ram Robotnik. Pretty sure he egged his pants briefly.
id like to present the idea that on top of his bullet-time reaction speed that makes us percieve him as fast, he is also ridiculously agile. how many somersaults can the best athlete in the world do from a standing jump, in comparison to sonic? have you ever tried to run a loop? your body doesnt like to rotate backwards while moving, and with the magic shoes giving him the traction he needs to stick to walls so long as he's moving, you still need agility and capability to manage that kind of shift in momentum.
Good analogy with the mantis shrimp, but we see about as many colors as they do. Their cones see more specific colors, while ours have a huge range with a big area of our brain to process it all. The extra cones seem to be there to save the brain the energy need to "see the colors".

What you said about larger people tending to have more burst energy but worse endurance, I've personally experienced that in school some times in P.E. There was at least one time where I was chasing a guy and he was surprised at how fast I was, but I couldn't keep going for long.
There are a few issue with this. If this was relativity one: how does he do loops? Two: can make a sonic boom by running? Three: through rolling is able to shoot him moles in the air? Relitivity doesnt explain any of these things. This is less of a theory and more of a way to tell you about humming birds. Your old theory legit contradicts this in so many ways. And it make more sense. Im really just confused. This theory isnt like ness is sans it more like life doesnt make any sense.
You're actually right! Sonic shoes directly affect his speed! In the comics he was a "normal" humanoid hedgehog until he put on the shoes that were given to him by a scientist and were made immune to friction(yes it doesnt respect the laws of thermodynamics, figures) unless Sonic purposelly pushes them into something, so it's pretty much like his shoes allowed his feet to float a few milimeters above the ground. Thanks to that he was able to break the sound barrier which exposed him to some radiation that turned him blue and allowed the guy's body to tap into different sources of energy(like the Chaos Emeralds!) instead of, you know, dying, which then made him increasingly faster as time went on. Meanwhile in the games themselves we see power-ups that make Sonic faster by upgrading his shoes, most of them are temporary though tince they cant keep up for long with Sonic's speed(no anti-friction magic I guess?) but the one who endured, the lightspeed shoes, pretty much allowed him to(as the name implies) achieve relativistic speeds for the first time in his base form with the lightspeed attack before he grew fast enough to do it on his daily basis(lots and lots of chaos emerald juice will do that to you I guess).
Oooooor (and I get this video is just a fun trivia flex, but still): 1. Eggman is deceptively strong and faster than his appearance, especially in short bursts (see also: shattering a sheet of solid ice several times larger than him and shrugging it off. 2. Sonic has been speed timed as truly fast, regularly outruns jet engines, and when he's actually trying, is nearly capable of outrunning a black hole. 3. Sonic canonically eases up on his skills for the sake of fun competition.

I can help you *ALOT* more, as Sonic can travel back and forward in time in Sonic CD. Super Sonic can warp reality, and Hyper Sonic can Infinitely warp matter.
Man this really got me thinking. Obviously that’s not really what’s going on in the games, but it’s still fun to see crazy theories like this and in the end of the day I learned something pretty neat!
I mean, this was interesting discussion, but it doesn't hold up to your _previous_ "Sonic IS Fast" videos way back when. That used _objective_ distances and time to measure Sonic's speed, and the result was well within the range needed to be classified as "super-speed". So clearly something else is going on here. I know Eggman once tricked Sonic into Super Slow-mo shoes (Labyrinth), so logically he could make the reverse for himself, right?
This didn't made sense at all, like, Eggman outrunning sonic in the classic games was just a tool to create tension, plus, none of Sonic's speed feats were talked about, like when he outrunned a black hole in Colors for like 3 seconds before being swallowed
My thought on Sonic characters using vehicles in racing games was always, so that the others would have a fair chance or else Sonic will just leave them all far behind. But then there are games like the Olympic games crossovers and it gets really odd and funny when everyone can beat Sonic on foot. How many tranquillisers did they give that hedgehog before the race?
I appreciate the learning in this video, but it makes no sense to apply it to sonic. If sonic is experiencing the world slower than we do, that doesn't mean he suddenly moves faster. Actual hedgehogs aren't moving at 50 mph because they have a high metabolism. Even if it did mean that, it wouldn't explain why eggman could outrun him.

On a more serious note, you actually gave a proper 4th reason on an older sonic video why Robotnik always beats him. Sonic goes slow because he doesn't want to wreck any innocents around him. I mean, would you take Sonic as the type of person that would deep 6 someone? Lets him go slower to make sure he doesn't get severe injuries.
This theory reminds me of the movie "Epic" if anyone remembers it. In a way, it IS true! For example, take what the dad says in the beginning of the movie. "Bugs and smaller animals can be living in a ”different dimension" from ours by how they precieve time and the world around them. To a bug, we humans are just bug, dumb, and slow." Makes sense! 😋
Wow how cool, it looks like this might apply to more characters other than sonic. What about spider-man and the spider sense, or other video game charachters which have an ability which allows them to percieve time more slowly. Like the body suit in vanquish may actually trigger this in the human body by artificially increasing the metabolism and the heartbeat of the wearer.
I mean, ok in the scene of the film he was able to go at a normal speed while the world around him was almost frozen. But that's because we see it from his eyes. How could he destroy all those missiles before they hit him if he just PERCEIVED the world so much slower than him (aka himself so much faster than the world)? I could just barely understand if he avoided those missiles, but he actively destroyed them. I'm sorry, but this theory sounds like safe and interesting science applied to a thing that doesn't have anything to do with it...
I'm not sure where I saw it but I believe it was stated that Eggman indeed has a cybernetic exoskeleton inside his clothes that allow him to keep up with Sonic for short bursts before it stops working, so you're probably right about that too

Hey Lockstin- I watched a theory a while back that suggested that the reason Sonic doesn't catch up to Eggman isn't that he's slower but rather giving himself enough distance to react to any traps Eggman may spring on him. Say... a spike trap out of the ground like in Collision Chaos. (I wish I could remember where that theory was from though,)

As far as I know, some iterations of Sonic could easily just pop next to eggman and finish him off, but he chooses not to because he has an adrenaline addiction. Fighting eggman is the only thing that fuels that need, so he lets him get away every time.

I may sound like a fanboy for saying this but It would be blasphemous for any character to run faster than sonic in a game where running speed varies between characters.

I personally ascribe to the whole "Eggman has cybernetic legs" theory, because the theory you described in the majority of the video is incompatible with the canon information provided about Sonic himself - we HAVE rough frames of reference for Sonic's speed - his base form is capable of reaching the speed of sound in seconds and in Super Sonic form, he's capable of nearing, if not exceeding the speed of light - which is a constant (in a vacuum, anyway, which is where he uses the form frequently, such as in Doomsday Zone in Sonic & Knuckles). If Sonic's speed is an established value, perception isn't a factor.

Sonic does get tired, he sleeps 8 hours and takes naps throughout the day. That said, in Sonic Frontiers he can run just as fast while being affected by the corruption. Maybe he just got stronger.

I always figured that Eggman running so fast was one of those cartoony things, like when a character gets scared and runs for the hills, leaving behind big dust clouds along their path. Couple that with the frightened Eggman running faster than Sonic, and that's just comedy. Eggman is the fastest thing alive, but only when he's scared.

Actually Mantis Shrimp don't see more colours than humans. It seems that they don't do image processing (contrary to most animals) and thus fail to distinguish different shades that humans can separate (if they are part of thei...our color spectrum, since Mantis Shrimp see in more wavelengths).
So Mantis Shrimp see less colours but some different ones than humans.
Gravity doesn't slow down time, it slows down things so it looks like it is slowing down time. For example, you run slower when you have m,ore weight on you. And not just humans, cars, ships, anything with mass, which includes molecules. Also, speed based on metabolic rate is a correlation. It just happens that animals that move faster tend to have faster metabolic rates. And because they move faster, their brains create different neural pathways to process information faster. Plus, the tiny brain thing you mentioned. Then there are other animals that barely move, so seeing time faster would just be a big waste of relative time for them. So they evolved slower neural pathways.

Great video! I had always though that Sonic sees the world faster and we are playing him through his perspective. If I remember correctly, the last Sonic video about his speed mention something like that he just took easy on Eggman because he's really not wanting to kill him and therefore run slower for Eggman, giving him a chance to live.

I know that this was just an excuse to teach us things, which is cool n' all, but Sonic simply perceiving the world differently from us doesn't make any sense when you consider the terrain that Sonic is running on. Sonic's perception of time wouldn't allow him to run through a loop-dee-loop, no matter how you slice it.

I think the real reason is that if sonic caught up to eggman then there wouldn't be a final boss. And the devs just didn't think about the consequences of having eggman outrun sonic for a few seconds. Said consequences being, nerds debating weather or not sonic is actually fast over 25 years later.
According to some sonic comics, the reason why he is fast and looks the way he is because eggman gave him running shoes and he ran on a treadmill. Note that sonic was already fast before then, so adding more speed to him caused the treadmill to explode, turning him blue, and he also redesigned his shed to what we now know as today.

The problem with trying to apply relativity to Sonic is that the laws of gravity and relativity are more of guidelines. In both Colors and Lost world, we see prime examples of this with the black hole during Terminal Velocity and the Indigo Asteroid power.

One other thing to consider is that Sonic's displayed speeds are not his actual speed in the games.
If you can find them, there are some pretty interesting short clips of the prototype Sonic test level from when they were working out mechanics for the first game. They were largely unplayable because he could move far faster than the human reaction speed could reach, which for a platformer is a problem. His initial speed was either five or ten times faster than what showed up in the game.
You have several games where they display an MPH for Sonic, and you also have the cutscenes that show him as much faster than you can play him as.
For Robotnik, robotic legs fits, as does a few other theories...and that you'd have a ratings problem for a human getting pummeled.

Interesting science, but for the actual answer, I think it's just that Eggman's only able to outpace Snoic over short distances, and I think it comes down to Eggman accelerating faster; Eggman keeps pace basically because Snenc's still getting up to speed, and then by the time Sinoc would get to cruising speed, Eggman's already in his next mech. It's possible that it's a matter of distance, and Zanax would run rings (pun totally intended) around Eggman if the race was particularly far. Also, it's probably not that substantial of a difference; Snanac the Hodgeheg may be faster long-term, but even if Eggman's the slower of the two he's still ludicrously fast for a human.

I've always imagined Sonic's speed in the games as a thing of relativity. Either that or things are scaled up, because games. It could seem like small levels he runs through, but maybe they're long to the characters. Like traveling in RPGs.
Though, in stuff like the sports games, he plays it down for fairness. Same with those with absurd strength, like Knuckles.
That said, at least in the comics, Sonic's shoes _are_ magic. Sort of. They're specially made so they don't wear out in an instant from his running. Not exactly enhancers. And modern age Robotnik/Eggman _is_ a bit cybernetic. Or was. I'm hazy on the details.
Close, Archie/SatAM continuity Robotnik is killed deader than dead in the Endgame storyline and eventually replaced by a previously one-off alternate reality version who used the roboticization process (minus the enslavement bit) on himself and conquered his own reality, then due to boredom decided to handle Mobius Prime's version of Sonic where his native (as in belonging to, not Aborignal) counterpart failed. Then promptly got wrecked successively by Sonic who even ran so fast to hold reality together that he permanently transformed from his Classic design to his Modern. Also there's that time that Classic Archie!Sonic scooped water into a ball and threw it before physics could react.
That's part of why I said "modern age," as the living blob from original Archie/SatAM had a robo-arm and little else before being sent to the void. Eggman 2.0 was roboticized, then turned flesh at some point, then I think had robot bits installed.
And, yeah, Sonic in the comics had crazy speed. One of my favorite moments was near the end of the run. He went cross country in a rage, trying to ram Robotnik. Pretty sure he egged his pants briefly.

id like to present the idea that on top of his bullet-time reaction speed that makes us percieve him as fast, he is also ridiculously agile. how many somersaults can the best athlete in the world do from a standing jump, in comparison to sonic? have you ever tried to run a loop? your body doesnt like to rotate backwards while moving, and with the magic shoes giving him the traction he needs to stick to walls so long as he's moving, you still need agility and capability to manage that kind of shift in momentum.

Their cones see more specific colors, while ours have a huge range with a big area of our brain to process it all.
The extra cones seem to be there to save the brain the energy need to "see the colors".

What you said about larger people tending to have more burst energy but worse endurance, I've personally experienced that in school some times in P.E. There was at least one time where I was chasing a guy and he was surprised at how fast I was, but I couldn't keep going for long.
There are a few issue with this. If this was relativity one: how does he do loops? Two: can make a sonic boom by running? Three: through rolling is able to shoot him moles in the air? Relitivity doesnt explain any of these things. This is less of a theory and more of a way to tell you about humming birds. Your old theory legit contradicts this in so many ways. And it make more sense. Im really just confused. This theory isnt like ness is sans it more like life doesnt make any sense.

You're actually right! Sonic shoes directly affect his speed!
In the comics he was a "normal" humanoid hedgehog until he put on the shoes that were given to him by a scientist and were made immune to friction(yes it doesnt respect the laws of thermodynamics, figures) unless Sonic purposelly pushes them into something, so it's pretty much like his shoes allowed his feet to float a few milimeters above the ground.
Thanks to that he was able to break the sound barrier which exposed him to some radiation that turned him blue and allowed the guy's body to tap into different sources of energy(like the Chaos Emeralds!) instead of, you know, dying, which then made him increasingly faster as time went on.
Meanwhile in the games themselves we see power-ups that make Sonic faster by upgrading his shoes, most of them are temporary though tince they cant keep up for long with Sonic's speed(no anti-friction magic I guess?) but the one who endured, the lightspeed shoes, pretty much allowed him to(as the name implies) achieve relativistic speeds for the first time in his base form with the lightspeed attack before he grew fast enough to do it on his daily basis(lots and lots of chaos emerald juice will do that to you I guess).
So basically satam Sonic is originally the fastest sonic

1. Eggman is deceptively strong and faster than his appearance, especially in short bursts (see also: shattering a sheet of solid ice several times larger than him and shrugging it off.
2. Sonic has been speed timed as truly fast, regularly outruns jet engines, and when he's actually trying, is nearly capable of outrunning a black hole.
3. Sonic canonically eases up on his skills for the sake of fun competition.

I can help you *ALOT* more, as Sonic can travel back and forward in time in Sonic CD. Super Sonic can warp reality, and Hyper Sonic can Infinitely warp matter.
Man this really got me thinking. Obviously that’s not really what’s going on in the games, but it’s still fun to see crazy theories like this and in the end of the day I learned something pretty neat!

I mean, this was interesting discussion, but it doesn't hold up to your _previous_ "Sonic IS Fast" videos way back when. That used _objective_ distances and time to measure Sonic's speed, and the result was well within the range needed to be classified as "super-speed".
So clearly something else is going on here. I know Eggman once tricked Sonic into Super Slow-mo shoes (Labyrinth), so logically he could make the reverse for himself, right?

This didn't made sense at all, like, Eggman outrunning sonic in the classic games was just a tool to create tension, plus, none of Sonic's speed feats were talked about, like when he outrunned a black hole in Colors for like 3 seconds before being swallowed

My thought on Sonic characters using vehicles in racing games was always, so that the others would have a fair chance or else Sonic will just leave them all far behind. But then there are games like the Olympic games crossovers and it gets really odd and funny when everyone can beat Sonic on foot. How many tranquillisers did they give that hedgehog before the race?

I appreciate the learning in this video, but it makes no sense to apply it to sonic. If sonic is experiencing the world slower than we do, that doesn't mean he suddenly moves faster. Actual hedgehogs aren't moving at 50 mph because they have a high metabolism. Even if it did mean that, it wouldn't explain why eggman could outrun him.

On a more serious note, you actually gave a proper 4th reason on an older sonic video why Robotnik always beats him. Sonic goes slow because he doesn't want to wreck any innocents around him. I mean, would you take Sonic as the type of person that would deep 6 someone? Lets him go slower to make sure he doesn't get severe injuries.

This theory reminds me of the movie "Epic" if anyone remembers it. In a way, it IS true! For example, take what the dad says in the beginning of the movie. "Bugs and smaller animals can be living in a ”different dimension" from ours by how they precieve time and the world around them. To a bug, we humans are just bug, dumb, and slow."

Wow how cool, it looks like this might apply to more characters other than sonic. What about spider-man and the spider sense, or other video game charachters which have an ability which allows them to percieve time more slowly. Like the body suit in vanquish may actually trigger this in the human body by artificially increasing the metabolism and the heartbeat of the wearer.
I mean, ok in the scene of the film he was able to go at a normal speed while the world around him was almost frozen.
But that's because we see it from his eyes.
How could he destroy all those missiles before they hit him if he just PERCEIVED the world so much slower than him (aka himself so much faster than the world)?

I'm not sure where I saw it but I believe it was stated that Eggman indeed has a cybernetic exoskeleton inside his clothes that allow him to keep up with Sonic for short bursts before it stops working, so you're probably right about that too
