Theory: Leon has partial blindness due to cataracts, which is why his pupils are fuzzy like that *and* why he can get lost going from A to B when the path is a straight line.
Correction on the misconception of a misconception: There are large bats and small bats. Small bats tend to have exceptionally poor eyesight, and rely on echolocation to hunt bugs. They also tend to be nocturnal. Large bats tend to diurnal, and subsist off of eating fruits. They have relatively good eye sight, and almost no echolocation.
A slight adjustment on your correction: small bats don't have poor eyesight, they have poor night vision. Their eyesight is no better or worse than their larger cousins. They just can't see in the dark so they have to echolocate :)
@@Sephelions Yeah. Not fully true. But internet loves its pedantic, especially the half-informed ones. Due to the large diversity of bats, small insectivoruous bats tend to rely on echolocation, which creates a tendency towards relatively poor vision, it is not universal. Also while larger bats tend towards diurnal activities, that is also not a universal truth, and some even hunt small animals (and some of those, with echolocation...at night).
Nah, it's more on the line of "Yeah sure, we are absolutely talking about Pokémon, I swear. This is not educational content, I mean, what did you made it think that?"

I may just be biased as a Zubat lover, but Pokémon without obvious eyes always pique my interest.

Optician here! The simplest distinction between rods and cones is: Cones purely perceive color, while rods purely perceive contrast/value (black and white vision). The way colors work, is that an object that is hit by light, reflects some of it, while a large part of the light is absorbed. The wavelength of the light that gets reflected discerns which color the object appears as to us. i.e. a red object is red to us, because it reflects only red light while it absorbs all the other colors of light. During the daytime, where there's plenty of light from the sun, our eyes rely mostly on the cones because there's so much light for those to work with. Meanwhile at night, when there is very little light that could be reflected as color by an object, everything seems rather washed out and dull. There simply IS no 'colored' light for the cones in our eyes to see. Alas, the rods take over and you see mostly contrast instead. And here's the details: Now, the actual reason why we don't see as clearly at night isn't just that! The way cones and rods are distributed in our eyes is. We have a little spot in our eyes on our retinas called the 'macula'. This little spot is in the back of our eyes, in a direct line behind the lens, so that when we look at something, this is the spot where the clearest image is projected. To make use of all the light that gets focused there, this spot is also entirely made up of cones. Outside of the makula, there's a mix of cones and rods, with gradually less cones and more rods the further you move away from the makula along your retina. This is perfect for daytime vision - humans are naturally diurnal after all - and lets us see tiniest details in objects. This is also exactly why humans have poor nighttime vision. There are no cells there in that spot, that could process the poor light we have at night. Instead, we have to rely more on our peripheral vision at night, while that spot of our absolute best vision is almost entirely useless. The further away from the makula, the light projected into your eye by your lens is also less focused, which is why your vision at night will automatically be more blurry the darker it is! Okay, now I am done getting excited about eyes and vision again xD
According to the Pokedex Deino is also totally without eyes. And possibly Zwelious. TVTropes speculated that's why Hydregion is seen as this crazed force of destruction. It's used to just hearing/tremorsensing it's way through life and now all the sudden it's flying and has this whole new "sight" thing going. And because this is all new to it, it thinks anything it sees moving is an enemy trying to attack it. Presumably it calms down from all the crazy after a while though, because quite a few trainers have them in the show.
Missed out on a great pun with that title, the misspelling of ridiculous immediately reminded me of the Regis, I'd say their eyes are pretty REGICULOUS
Note: Microbats are nocturnal echolocators. _Megabats_ are diurnal, mostly visual hunters. (You know, the ones that don't eat fruit.) Thus, Zubat getting better vision as it grows larger does make sense.
Loved the video, but one slight misconception with rods and cones. Cones are for colored light, rods are for reduced light, or low light. Cones do very little with high intensity light

Luxray's "see through walls" bit could be related to electroreception like we see in various fish irl. Since that's basically the ability to sense via electricity, or sense the electrical activity within nearby living bodies, and Luxray is electric type, it could fit. With there being 2 types of electrorecepion as well, passive and active, with the active type involving the user generating an electrical field and discerning the contents of their surroundings based on how those bodies interact with that field. Luxray's dex entry didn't stat it "can see through walls", but that "When it's eyes gleam gold it can spot hiding prey - even those taking shelter behind a wall." It can find you behind cover, but that doesn't necessarily mean it's "seeing" you in the way we tend to think of it. It's eyes glow somewhat while using this sense from the sounds of it, so what if Luxray's special eyes allow it to emit an electrical field, something very in line with an Electric-type's natural abilities, which can then allow it to perceive it's surroundings better because it's adding active electroreception to it's natural eyesight.

The smaller, bug-eating or blood-drinking species of bat that actually have echolocation are nocturnal and have excellent hearing at some minor cost to sight, but I imagine their eyesight isn’t that bad. There’s a difference between megabats and microbats, but neither are blind.
Eh, flying foxes, in particular, are typically nocturnal, despite not having echolocation. Some of the flying foxes _are_ diurnal, but these are the exception, not the rule.
I would love a part 2 of going into pokémon, like Zubat, who's eye's are inaccurate. I have a bone to pick myself with the use of new world vultures in glara when an old world vulture with awesome eye sight would be so cool!
I feel like this can be a seriesssssss Fun fact, cephlapods have eyes that evolved for a far different reason than us humans and other creatures on earth, making their eyes very unique. It also explains their weird eye shapes.
regarding the eyes of bats it also depends on the kind of bat, you can't compare the average bat to the flying fox since are diurnal and vampire bats for example are more nocturnal. if I am not mistaken flying foxes don't even have echolocation
Eyes are so interesting. I have this thing where my right eye has an excess of rods and fewer cones (I believe that's right) and it causes my right eye to have exceptional night vision. But the downside is during the day, I usually have to keep it closed until it adjusts. Before it adjusts though, it's partially colorblind. I don't see green with it until my eye adapts and my left eye and brain make up the balance. Then things look normal and I can open it without extreme pain from the light.
Oh my god- I literally need new glasses! The frames are straight up broken. Been broken for months! Couldn’t get new one til the new year. Is this the universe telling me something?

"Imagine seeing your butt and nose at the same time," Contortionists: uh huh, ok
regarding the eyes of bats it also depends on the kind of bat, you can't compare the average bat to the flying fox since are diurnal and vampire bats for example are more nocturnal. if I am not mistaken flying foxes don't even have echolocation
"That why the airports are getting in trouble,
They're lookin' at Weiners while at work!"
*Excuse me Wat*

Just so you know, the overall quality of your videos and general structure has really improved. Great work!
Lockstin:*wiggles zubat around*
Me:*busy laughing at the accurate depiction of zubat flying. Especially seeing zubat's overworld sprite "flying"*
12:16 "Smells like DIRT!"
Okay, but I would also love to sit down an hear about what Pokemon may also be colorblind. That sounds like some fun trivia to just have.
I feel like you wore glasses as a kid to more accentuate your “nerdiness”. I say that because I did that too lmao
I wear mine, to see as well. Without them, my sight far away, sucks. Close up, not so bad.
@@jameshamaker9321 I’m so nearsighted that anything not in front of my face is blurry.
@@pokechatter same here.
I always assumed luxray always used some form of electrolocation to see through walls, kind of like what sharks and platypuses use, but cooler
Not going to lie, I was really interested in those glasses. Then I was reminded how obscenely expensive pokemon Merch and glasses are. You put the two together and ouch.
This needs a part 2, this is super interesting
🤣 Chiton is actually pronounced as
“chi” = “kai”
“ton” = “tonne”
Yes, chi- is pronounced as "kai-." But -ton is pronounced without the vowel, "-t'n," or as the word "ton." -ton is not pronounced as "tone."
It's chitin, not chiton.
Suprising there aren't any pokemon with multiple eyes yet, much like Argus from mythology, not talking about boring legendary pokemon, I want normal pokemon-lines based on eyes, maybe a peacock or something like that.
You going "smells like DIRT!" threw me off so hard
“It’s thicc booty blocks it’s sight”lol. Don’t know why that got me 😂
You should do a video showing the design inspiration for al g max or mega Pokémon
In the outro you said that there were more eyes you'd like to cover. I would be very pleased with a second eyepisode like this one, and think many others of your subscribers would be as well!
Cradily: My eyes look like teeth.
I'm pretty sure we all thought of that when we saw Cradily
not just teeth ;)
So what I'm hearing is...
Toph=Zubat CONFIRMED!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
7:18 lockstin has never played mystery dungeon confirmed
Don't steal kids!
@@seletron8291 uuum maybe a comma would help
@@wesleyrussell6670 Did I stutter!

I appreciate the slight resurgence of the "everything is pokemon" phenomenon from the 90s-2000s
I want those pokemon glasses

1-800 contacts? They can't have my brand.

A pokemon whose eyes are unique is zygarde because of the HEXAGONAL SHAPES, his eyes are used for monitoring the ecosystem.
I mean, hexagons are the best and most efficient polygon. Just look at how and bees construct honeycomb for one example.
“I don’t have a Decidueye plush”
You could have used that Rowlet, it’s closer then Hoothoot
Aren’t Gigalth’s.. things sound receptors, not eyes?

Alright, somebody's gotta make that a meme
Thanks for making this video! I love your content and will check out the Jins glasses too! With respect, I did want to say two things though:
1) Chiton is pronounced like, KAI-TN. I worked as a marine biology researcher, and those suckers are super cool!
2) I was a bit disappointed that Xatu didn't make the cut for this video. There are interesting Pokedex entries about it having one eye see into the future and the other see into the past. Hopefully it will be featured if there is a Part II.
Thanks again for your interesting videos!
Hey, that makes me wonder about Sableye's eyes. How does Sableye's original eyes would look like?🤔
“Noctowl is an owl. So is Decidueye. ... i don’t have a decidueye plush”
The rowlett plush in the background: :(
Lockstin: I can see your eyes through this camera
Me who has anxiety about that: *intense demonic screeching*

You blew it. You could've called it *DECIDUEYESIGHT* and you missed the opportunitree. (No offense)
