    Golden Wonders are the king of potatoes. My Mum only ever used to serve them boiled, but she boiled them in their skins so they didn't break up. Then drained the water from the pan and left on a low heat till the skins began to crisp on the bottom of the pan. Served split with loads of salted butter, one of the best meals ever. And us kids used to fight over the crispy skin.

    Good going Dan. I've never grown King Edwards but I'll give them a go next year. I did Golden Wonder once but boiled them, not knowing they were a good chipping spud. Maybe I'll try them again.
    Best Wishes, Brendan.

      I love King Eddies but if you get early blight they are too small and as they're only chippers, roasters and bakers then they're not much use.
      Don't bother boiling Golden Wonder or Sarpos as they're so floury they just dissolve in the pan, but that's why they're so good for roasts and chips.
      Cheers, Dan.

    brilliant. I will be growing in pots next year.. I don't have a lot of space but I think the yield from a few pots will still be the same or better than using the ground.

      I would say much more poundage per square ft in pots, and you just empty one out as you need them.
      Cheers, Dan.

    They look amazing. I love good crispy roast potatoes, especially with a bit of garlic mixed in. Where is you get those scales from? Don't forget the one that rolled away....oh good you saw it. Well you've got lots of potatoes to keep you going for a while. I'll dig all mine up once the kids have gone back to school.

      Happy with the Golden Wonder as they can be pretty small usually.

    Beltin golden wonder !! Mine needed a month longer in't ground but I'm not complaining and yes I agree they make the best ever chips ever !! I turned out my first Golden Wonder this weekend as well..... feel so inadequate. Yours were wonderful. When did you plant them Dan? I think I may have planted mine late and that may have meant they needed longer. As ever you show me what I must aim for. One day I'll get there.

    • @Allotment-diaryUk
      @Allotment-diaryUk  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Golden Wonder are a pathetic yielder but if you plant early April and don't get blight you may just get a decent crop.
      They are difficult as they are a Heritage variety, but if you get a few they're worth the effort.
      Cheers, Dan.

    Please post a link to the poly bags you are using so I can try to find something comparable in the US.
    Also... in all the videos where you harvest the potatoes I never hear how you know when they are done.

    How many tuber seeds do you normally plant, and how deep? I am seriously thinking about using pots next year for my potatoes.Well done! Thanks, Lori

    I'd be interested in what are you top 5 spuds to grow?

    • @Allotment-diaryUk
      @Allotment-diaryUk  10 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      For me the best 1st early new spuds are Charlotte,Nicola or Anya. and the best Late crop Chippers, roasters and Bakers are Golden Wonder, King Edward and Picasso for bakers.
      As a banker for Blight grow Sarpos.
      Cheers, Dan.

    Most rave about the Sarpo Mira being blight resistant but you don't seem to like them much. What is the problem with the potato?

    • @Allotment-diaryUk
      @Allotment-diaryUk  10 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      No, I do like them, they make great chips, roast and baking potatoes, but they're not quite as good flavour as King Edwards.
      Cheers, Dan.

    What amazing growing skills you have. Random question.. Do you reuse your soil? If not what do you do with it? Thank you for posting these videos. I am in Florida and got potatoes out now just mounded them.

    i'm able to control blight on my tomatoes with a molasses spray, since potatoes are in the same family i wonder if it would work on them.

    • @Allotment-diaryUk
      @Allotment-diaryUk  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      There are different ways but not many work, even the chemical sprays, as they get washed off in the rain and stop being effective.
      Aspirin is supposed to help so I might try that next time.
      Cheers, Dan.

    it looks great, but it seems easier to make a hole in the ground, put a network cover, add a fertilizer there and plant potatoes. In this case you don’t need buckets just pull the potato bush over the edges of the net. Doesn't it?

  • @kennethhopson7087
    @kennethhopson7087 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    If you have some pork neck bones, you could cook them in some water and add some of the smell potatoes and it will be great.

    Great looking potatoes. You should do a video on how YOU make your chips if you haven’t. I’d love to see how you prepare your harvest. 👍🏻

    When you see blight on the leaves can you still eat the potatoes? I've always wondered this...

    • @Allotment-diaryUk
      @Allotment-diaryUk  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      You should really cut the tops off the spuds as soon as you see it so the spores don't get washed down onto the tubers later on.
      Or harvest them straight away.
      The spuds are fine to eat.
      Cheers, Dan.

    Why don't you try to make your own potatoe sort ?
    cross the king edwards or the golden wonder with the sarpo and see what hapens it takes like three years from seed but may be you get a good taty

    Hi, what will you do with the used potato soil? sprinkle over garden? save for a different vegetable next year? compost heap?

    • @Allotment-diaryUk
      @Allotment-diaryUk  10 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I just dig it into the soil beds to add organic matter and improve it.
