    Potatoes are my favourite vegetable. There's something very earthy about digging up those wonderful spuds.

    A Great harvest is 5 lb.s to every 1 seed potato. So you came right about to your mark. Congrats! It's a challenge in pots! And the tiny potatoes are wonderful in soups!

      LOL I have to confess, that I often think of all my youtube friends "across the pond" having the same weather! Foolish I know, but I was thinking of all the rain so many I watch have had this year. Sorry, and yes, that really was crazy thinking. Bless, Sheila

    They look wonderful!! That Spuds galore really works, I'll have to get me some of that for next year. My King Edwards are all up, but then I'm down south. Love the funky music, I had a boogey along with it! With the small potatoes, I just wash and then mix them with olive oil and salt and pepper and roast them in the oven. Enjoy!!

      +clairesallotment The new fertilizer seems to work but we'll see what effect it's had on the Sarpos later.

    Thank you so much for your very informative videos. I am making some research to see if here in Quebec, we can have this variety of potatoes (King Edward). It seems that it is possible but where... All your comments are very appropriate. For the past years, I have grown Lumpers, an old variety too. I got my first baby-potatoes from the Bank of Potato Genes in Canada. They should be big next year. Thanks for such a generous help to all gardeners around this world.

    Fantastic crop from 6 seed potatoes! Why do you grow in pots rather than the ground? Really tempted to try it on my plot, but wondered if there was a specific reason, i.e. Is your area / ground prone to blight or scab etc, or is the soil too 'sweet' for spuds?

      +Au gardener This Fertilizer is 12:11:18 NPK so you should have something similar in Oz, loof for a fert with about double the Potash as normal.
      This has trace elements in it so you could add some Seaweed or similar too or maybe there's a fertilizer with it in also.
      Cheers, Dan.

    • @augardener9713
      @augardener9713 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks Dan, For some reason most of our fruit and veg fertiliser is nitrogen heavy. I have seen organic individual fert (N and P and K) so I might have to look into mixing that to a similar ratio as your stuff. Also a few rose and flower fert have a better ratio but not keen on using that stuff on my veg.

    I've learnd a lesson this year. I've got some 'Ratte' potatoes in pots and you get loads of potatoes a bit smaller than hen's eggs, which is fine before the skins 'set' but now they all need bloody peeling! dohhh! So next year I'll just use the Linzers which by the end of June are big enough to peel. Nice crop by the way. I think the rain arrived just at the right time to bulk em up.

    • @Allotment-diaryUk

    Those little ones are delicious as "smashed spuds" Dan. Boil them in their skins for just a few minutes. Drain. Smash each one under the heel of your palm so it is flattened a bit and the skin burst (but so they will still hold together) then deep fry just like chips. Yum! So-o-o good! Thank´s! So you always need to buy new soil for your containers? Isn´t that expensive? And don´t your growing beds get overload throughout the many years you´re adding soil from containers? .... I just can´t imagine how that works! ;-)

    • @DragonflyArtz1
      @DragonflyArtz1 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Nominem a common practice to avoid blight, is to spread the used potato soil in the sun for 4 years. So if you have five "fills" you can then re-use the dirt in succession. It depends on how much room you have. Some people cook their used soil, but that kills the beneficial nutrients as well, but it can be OK if you re-supply nutrients. Blight can kill you. Not something to mess with.

    Of all the videos I've seen on the net. You are the only one who harvests in a huge way. And in buckets ... tell me what is your secret please put the substrate to get those results?

    One question then an idea.... What is the "Spuds Galore" that you mentioned? And an idea for the littl 'uns... would they be good just halved with the skin on and done in the frying pan along with some sausages or bacon?? Such a shame to just pitch them. Thanks everso for sharing all your garden adventures with us!!! Keep up the good work! Della

      +dellasmom Spuds Galore is the fertilizer I used, it's a high potash one for growing potatoes.
      Cheers, Dan.

    What are the ratings for the fertilizer you use? N,P,K,?

    • @Allotment-diaryUk
      @Allotment-diaryUk  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      +haynerbass This stuff was 12:11:18 + Mg + TE.
      So double strength and higher potash, plus magnesium and other trace elements which will all be beneficial.
      Cheers, Dan.

      +patrysie71 Absolutely not, I'm from Yorkshire, he's from somewhere where they pronounce "House" "Arse" .

      @patrysie71 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Allotment Diary I dont want to know how they pronounce "arse" then. hahaha Good job on the taters. They look great. I would love to try my hand at it, its just that containers are very expensive. The currency exchange rate is shafting us South Africans and we import everything.

    you mentioned "Spuds Galore", is that instead of using "potato magic", and what is the key ingredient? Potash? Nice crop, by the way!

    • @Allotment-diaryUk
      @Allotment-diaryUk  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Robert Morley The Spuds Galore is 12:11:18 NPK + MG + Te.
      So its quite strong with about double potash with added Magnesium plus trace elements.
      I think the Magnesium and added trace elements are as important as the NPK , especially in compost which is pretty sterile stuff with absolutely no goodness in it.
      Cheers, Dan.

    you can buy ladybugs in bulk n just chuck em on your potatoe plants.
    this will protect your plants from pests.
