    I have such a new appreciation for our farmers and what I think is such reasonable prices at the grocery store for beautiful fresh food. Growing food takes so long and a lot of work I don't think farmers are appreciated enough. Those potatoes in the first bucket just looked so pretty rolling out.

      Isn’t it funny ? We Gen Xers were told that technology was on its way to make life comfortable yet many of us are bored with it and are wanting to return to the land ?

    I enjoyed seeing your results with this experiment, I grew Sarpo Mira for the first time this year after watching yours and Chris's results & in one pot i got 18lb and the other pots 8 -9 lb - Awesome! I may try the Shona next year as I like a waxy potato.
    Thanks for this one, Regards Joan : )

They're doing ok and we tried one pot the other day and already good new potatoes. Might hav to harvest well before Xmas at this rate.

    You seem to be doing pretty brilliant growing your potato plants in large pots, if any of us we're to grow potatoes in pots similarly what would you recommend? From your experience, what should be be mindful about?
    I built a raised garden bed for my parents this summer and filled it up with home made compost as well as gardening soil and leaves from this fall, I grew pumpkins in it this year and plan on trying out for squash next perhaps some heirloom tomatoes however I am considering potatoes
    I can think of a few advantages and disadvantages of growing potatoes in a pot but done right the advantages probably outweigh the latter.

    Great reveal Dan, thanks for the info as always, the result of which means I've just added Blue Danube and the Shauna? (white mira) to my list for next year. I too don't like the mash the Mira's make, lovely chips though and great to grow!

      +catscats50 Just tried Axona tonight as mash and it will mash.
      The potatoes disintegrate a bit but not as much as Sarpo Mira.
      Made a tasty creamy mash too, more taste than Mira.
      Will be Mashing & boiling Una tomorrow to test those.
      This week I am mainly going to be eating potatoes !

    • @davidshaw9309
      @davidshaw9309 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      +allotmentdiary You can avoid disintegration if you microwave in skins until soft, split in two then use ricer to make mash. Skins stay in ricer. Mash is dry but then add anything you like to get the mouth-feel you want. I can have mash on the table in 10 minutes.

    Hi Dan....a good reveal for the varieties.
    It's my third year of growing Mira and am well pleased. I left them in the ground over winter last year with hardly any slug damage. The tops,do grow enormous though!. Apart from Axona, do you know,if the other varieties are available from the big seed companies?

    really really good experiment..im getting ready to plant mine here in New England,, (new hampshire),,,, We try to plant here in may. if we get those Endless may rains that have really affected getting them in the ground in May. I grow mine for storage (Burbank Russet, Beaugard Sweet Potatoes, and Yukoon Gold. so, One for baking and eating with sour cream on top. The sweet potato,,,filling food in the winter. love them, i can just pop them in oven in winter and go relax as they cook,, so those with butter, sea salt,, i like them baked since it ez,,, you can do more with them, and these store very well,,,,, They need 120 days and like heat, i found a part of the yard that is lower and warmer with full sun (the chickens have been there 2 years now... So Im going to make that spot the sweet potato patch now, very excited, I'll grow sweet potatoes there for about 2 years,, see how things go. I have goals of 100 lbs of each type,,, so 300 lbs of potatoes, (im not there yet but i'll get there,, mine are all gone from last year and it's only March,,, i wish i had boiling white potatoes right now. SO, im figuring my needs. 300 lbs, yes,,,, but then you have to save plenty of Seed potato. (?maybe save 20 lbs of seed potato from each. SO that would be down to 240 lbs so now i'd have more than i need,,,i can help my daughter as she needs them. im going to get some happy frog soil before i plant so i can sprinkle some down the rows as i ma ke them,,, (happy frog soil, has ?microbes that they say gives the roots exactly the living stuff they need),,, i just know people say if they have some seeds and want to be Sure they sprout and grow good they use that soil. SO, i'll add that this year. i grow in rows. I only have 1/2 acre and half of it is woods,, and then turns wetlands and a little river, it's just cattails, not a river, all the old properties here slope down in the backyards because the melting snow over the years makes it slope from the snow melting off teh streets. I guess im pretty blessed even if im prettty poor,, lol :) i could talk potatoes forever lol,, i don't know how people make 'crisps',,, french fries in UK,,, just vegetable oil in a pan with the right temperature?? people here don't make french fries (chips) at home much at all!,,, it must be more english than american,, Do english people buy and eat those frozen 'chips' and bake them in the oven. Im Really fussy about fried potato. I like hash browns though.... Thank you SO much for the video. LOL, i live alone i have no one to talk potatoes to :) those were beautiful looking potatoes,,,, meaning high quality, no soft spots no green ones,, and no defects. being in new england, we get just about the same weather (except the 2-3 months of the Ice Age we get here in NH,,,,,,, it's all fine,, Really interesting how the yields went from 10, 9, 8, 7, and then Five,, That was Incredible,,, you would have won the cardgame lol... take care,,,,, i DO have trouble understanding your english accent,, But the more i listen the more i understand,. thanks thanks so much for video :)

    • @JustMe-gs9xi
      @JustMe-gs9xi 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Oh,,, and i saw that video where you got 25 lbs!!!!!!! in one 13 gallon pot!,,, Good Lord,,,,, i sent that video to my daughter (the 25 lb potato yield),,, she has only space for pots there and im encouraging her to just grow a few pots, (have to pass these skills down to the next generation),,, Bless you and thank you :)

      For me it's a bit of both worlds.
      If I can get a decent tasting blight free masher I'll be happy.
      Mira are OK for taste and great for chips & roasts.
      I'd just love a blight free King Edward but that's not going to happen.
      Cheers, Dan.

    great variety, pretty fun as far as potatoes, but I dig potatoes so ... you should try a test of all of the varieties at once, baking, chips (or as the French call them, not french fries) boiling and eating, mashed and maybe combinations just to check it out since you seem in the experimental mood with potatoes.

    Hey Day thanx for that. As far as I know we can't get any of those varieties here in the US. You might be able to grow them...but I made a living cooking them. Dry mashed? Copious amounts of sour cream. To heck with the milk or potato water. Whole butter & sour cream will make any spud smooth and creamy. Thanx for the vid. Randy

      +R W Glavin Trouble is the Mira tend to disintegrate in the pan as you boil them so they disappear before they're cooked.
