    FYI
    The examples I use in the video are made up by me.
    1) Function Questions
    Function questions ask you about the function of something that is stated in TOEFL Listening. They usually start with the word “why”.
    Strategy for Conversations: Listen Closely
    In TOEFL Listening one of the speakers (usually a student) wants something and he talks about that. Thus, at first sight function questions seem really easy to solve. However, you must pay attention! There are traps sprinkled throughout TOEFL Listening because the examiner wants to check whether you can distinguish between different kinds of information.
    For example, in TOEFL Listening there may appear several bits of information that may all seem like reasons why the student goes to see the professor. However, only one of those is the correct answer. Make sure you listen closely so that you are able to find out the real reason why the student wants to talk to his professor or another person. Listening closely can get you valuable points that improve your TOEFL Listening score!
    Strategy for Lectures: Focus on the Context
    In TOEFL Listening you will listen to lectures where a professor talks about a topic to his students. The professor may do things like giving a definition, explaining something, discussing something, and so on. He does that for a reason. After the listening you may have to answer the question why the professor defines/explains/discusses something. In order to answer these questions correctly you must focus on the context.
    For example, imagine that the professor defines something at the beginning of the lecture. After that he explains this topic in more detail and the whole lecture is about this topic. If you focus on the context, you know that the professor started with the definition and then continued with details. So it is quite reasonable to assume that he gave a definition in the beginning to introduce the topic. That is why context is important.
    2) Inference Questions
    Inference questions ask you about indirect meanings. They ask you about something that is not directly stated in the listening but it is implied or can be inferred. Inference questions can be quite tricky. Therefore, you should use a specific strategy to answer these TOEFL Listening questions correctly.
    Strategy: Switch Places
    To solve inference questions in TOEFL Listening you have to do two things. First, listen actively and always ask yourself: Is there an indirect message? Does the speaker want to say something that he does not state directly? Second, switch places: Put yourself in the position of the speaker and ask yourself: If I were the speaker, why would I say that? When I took the TOEFL I found this strategy extremely helpful because it enabled me to do everything I needed to answer the question correctly: I was aware of indirect messages in TOEFL Listening and I was able to find out what the speaker actually wanted to say.

    Hey Juva, you've been most helpful! Thankyou!! My doubts were 1. Whether we can take notes on paper on every section or is a facility just made available 2 us during the 'speaking' section 2. Is there a person that evaluates our responses or is it computer based?

    • @juva
      @juva  3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Hey Shivani, you can take notes in the TOEFL. If you take the test in a test center, you can write on paper as far as I know, if you take the test at home you must use a transparency sheet or a whiteboard. In TOEFL Speaking you speak into the microphone of your computer, I'm not sure whether this is evaluated by a human/computer only or whether there is a mixed approach. Hope this helps :)

      The time you need per question may vary. You may find some questions easier than others and so you may need less time for those. I'd recommend taking a few TOEFL Listening practice tests so that you get an idea of how much time you have in order to answer the questions. This will help you manage your time in the TOEFL. When I took the TOEFL there was a 'next' button at the bottom of the page. Hope this helps :).
