TOEFL Listening - How to Take Notes for Conversations
If you want a high score in TOEFL Listening, you must take good notes. When you listen to conversations, this can be quite difficult because there are two speakers and there is a lot of information. Therefore, you need a strategy that helps you take useful notes quickly. I show you how you should take notes for conversations and what you need to write down. If you take notes like this, it will be a lot easier for you to get a high score in TOEFL Listening.

    FYI
The examples I use in the video are made up by me.
    The Table Strategy
When you start listening to a conversation in TOEFL Listening, the first thing you have to do is to draw a table. On the one side you write down everything the first speaker says and on the other side everything the second speaker says. Usually, you will listen to a conversation between a student and a professor or an official.
Why should you use a table?
A table helps you do two important things. First, if you use a table, you do not have to write down who said what every time a person says something. A table helps you assign the information stated to the respective person. It is important that you know who said what because you will need this later in order to answer the questions correctly. Second, a table helps you structure the information given. Always remember that you will be under time pressure when answering the questions in TOEFL Listening, so you do not have the time to search for information in your notes. A table allows you to locate the information you need quickly.
    What should you write down?
    #1 Desires
Take notes of desires. The student usually goes to see the professor for a reason, he has a wish or a specific need. For example, the student may go to see his professor because he wants to extend the deadline of an assignment. It is important that you take notes of that because this is the main point of the conversation and it is likely that you will be asked a question about that.
Take notes of reactions. In TOEFL Listening, it is likely that you may be asked a question about the reaction of a speaker. The speakers will often remark or suggest something. Taking notes of such information is essential because the questions in TOEFL Listening tend to focus on that. For instance, you may be asked a question about what a speaker suggested or implied.
    #3 Problems
Take notes of problems. Sometimes the two speakers cannot find a solution immediately because there is a problem. If this happens in TOEFL Listening, it is likely that you will get a question asking you what the problem was. Therefore, it is crucial that you take notes of complications.
    #4 Conclusions
In TOEFL Listening, the speakers usually reach a conclusion, find a solution, or make a decision. You must pay attention here: usually the speakers do not use the words “conclusion”, “solution” or “decision” to indicate that. Therefore, you must listen carefully and figure out which conclusion they draw or which decision they reach. Taking notes of conclusions is essential because the questions in TOEFL Listening often focus on such information. The examiner may want to check whether you understand that there was a problem and how the speaker solved this issue. The questions will try to confuse you by offering answers that appeared in the listening but that are wrong, so be careful here.

I think you should make a video on situation when TOEFL scores are put under Administrative review after test. I was really tensed when it happened and I believe most people will be in the same situation. So I think a video which explains about the situation and what to do next will really help people and maybe they'll have your video and guidance and not totally freak out about it.

It is great and I've enjoyed it. I think you can make it more practical by working on real example on TOEFL converstation test to show each related part to your course and the first part (note taking on table) really needs example. For instance you shouldn't fill the table line by line when the speaker changes if you want to follow the sequnce, it's better to fill the table in diagonal way when the speaker changes.

    S 21
    W 26
Main problem is my internet got disconnected while taking listening section, but anyhow later got connected but that(tension) impact the listening section for me alot. So the question is all about the listening score? Is that score is ok for universities because I heard some of them are more particular about section scores(for instance having more than 23 and above)

    • @juva
      @juva  2 ปีที่แล้ว

Congratulations Reshma! Your scores are amazing, you can be so proud of yourself! It's a pity that this happened during TOEFL Listening, that must have been very frustrating. I'd recommend checking out the requirements of the universities you want to apply to, they may differ in their approach regarding the listening section.
