    I show you how you can improve your TOEFL score in only 1 week of preparation. I scored 115 in the TOEFL test after 1 week. In this week I studied as effectively as I could to get the most out of my TOEFL preparation. When studying for the TOEFL test I realized that the key to getting a high TOEFL score is the right strategy. English language skills are not enough, you need to understand the test format! I talk about my strategies for each task in the TOEFL: Reading, Listening, Speaking and Writing - and I show you how you can improve your TOEFL score in only 1 week using these strategies.
    CORRECTION: In the video I say that there are 4 task types in TOEFL Listening, but I wanted to say 2 task types, sorry! I corrected it in the summary.

    HOW TO WORK WITH THIS VIDEO
    1. Watch the video and make sure you understand everything.
    2. Download the summary.
    3. Use the summary for your TOEFL preparation.
    TOEFL TEST FORMAT
    If you want to improve your TOEFL score you must understand the TOEFL test format. Every task of the TOEFL test has its own format. The more you stick to this answer pattern, the higher will be your TOEFL score. You will also have more time because you will not need to think about how to answer the questions during the TOEFL. This means that you can focus on the task at hand which will automatically improve your TOEFL score.
    1) READING
    To improve your score in TOEFL Reading, you need a reading strategy to answer the questions quickly and correctly. First, scan the passage. You need to know what it is about and you must have a rough idea of where certain information is located in this passage of TOEFL Reading. After that go to the first question and understand what it asks you to do. Since you have scanned the passage before you will roughly know where you can find the information in the passage. Go there and read it again but now in detail. You must use this information to answer the TOEFL questions correctly. For this reason you must know the question types in TOEFL Reading.
    2) LISTENING
    You must know the types of tasks of TOEFL Listening because you will get specific questions. Therefore, knowing the task types in TOEFL Listening will improve your TOEFL score considerably. Further, you need to take good notes. You will not have much time, therefore only write down keywords, abbreviate them and use symbols. Moreover, you need to know the question types that can appear in TOEFL Listening. This will improve your TOEFL Listening score immediately.
    3) SPEAKING
    To improve your score in TOEFL Speaking you first need to know the types of speaking tasks. Second, you must use the right structure in your answers. If your answers are structured correctly, ETS will give you the points. There is an easy way to structure your answers correctly: use templates. If you like have a look at the template I created for TOEFL Speaking, you can find the link below. If you want to improve your TOEFL Speaking score considerably you should use linking words such as ‘further’ or ‘moreover’. They give you structure and make things you say clearer.
    4) WRITING
    To improve your score in TOEFL Writing you must know the two types of tasks: the integrated essay and the independent essay. For each essay in TOEFL Writing you must use a specific structure. The reader will only understand your ideas if you structure them correctly. If you want to improve your TOEFL Writing score massively you should use linking words. They help you structuring your essays, they make your writing clearer and they show that you know a lot of vocabulary.
    FYI
    The examples I use in the video and in the summary are made up by me.

    Hi Juva! Just coming back here after my TOEFL test to thank you for you classes! I started my 1 week prep for TOEFL with this video hahahaha and thanks to your guides, I was able to score 115 on TOEFL! I was lucky because I took the test 2 weeks before the new model so I had plenty of materials too! I was fairly confident on my English skills but after the test I was able to understand how important are the strategies and templates for each section, and without you probably my grade would be much lower! Thank you very much!!!

    • @FeliciaSillen
      @FeliciaSillen 11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hi, I am taking the test soon and I am very nervous! How hard did you find the test? And how much time was you studying before taking the test?

    • @joaopedroalonsoalmeida3448
      @joaopedroalonsoalmeida3448 11 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Hi! So, for me, the main concern was the speaking section, so in the preparation week I did around 17 speaking tests on yt hahaha, and 2 full simulation classes. The thing is that in this short time, it is really hard to learn more English, so focus on learning about test strategies and templates for the sections, which will leverage your grade in a much more significative way than trying to take grammar classes. Hope it is helpful! 😅

    Hi Juva! Thank you so much for the videos. This looks like a very well thought out plan. I will definitely use your videos while preparing for the TOEFL. I have a question though: How much time should I spend preparing for the exam? I have roughly two to three weeks to prepare and I was planning on spending approximately 3-4 hours/day studying (I would dedicate more but I am also preparing for a German language exam). Would this be a realistic scenario?

    • @juva
      @juva  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Alexandru, I'm so glad you like it 😀. For how much time you need to prepare depends on your current level of English and the score you need. 3-4 hours day sounds realistic, it's a good amount of time to practice, but also not too much, which would be stressful in the end. Hope this helps!

    Hi Juva, I hope everything´s good. I had a question regarding to the hardware of TOEFL iBT (special home edition). The thing is that when u do the TOEFL iBT in an institution they make u use an American keyboard (which keep in mind that their symbols are placed in different parts of the keyboard compared to the Chilean keyboard for instance). So my question is that if you give the TOEFL home edition then you are free to choose any keyboard setting or you still have to use the American keyboard setting. Have a nice day and I hope u are able to read this comment and answer it. Thanks!

      Hi Pizza, I'm fine thank you! I hope you are doing well too! As far as I remember you can use the keyboard layout of your country. They won't switch it to an American keyboard. But just to be sure I'd recommend contacting ETS and asking them. Hope this helps :)

      Hey Bansari, usually they do, so it won't take long to find the information. • @juva
      @juva  3 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Hi Brenda, I think your score does not depend so much on how many hours you study per day, but the way you study. Of course you have to put some time into studying, but you also need to make sure that you study effectively. Scoring 100+ is definitely a challenge, but don't worry, you can do this. I'd recommend the following:
      1. Check whether you understand the test format.
      2. Find your weak spots.
      3. Focus on your weaknesses. If you like have a look at my playlists, you can find videos with tips for every part of the TOEFL there.

    Hi Juva!!! Thank you so much for this video. I´m going to take the TOEFL IBT Test this month and your video is so helpful to me. However, I have a doubt about the scores. When I´m studying and practising the scores I can have in the reading section, for example, are 30 out of 45. But every section has a score range of 0-30. How can I deduce what score I have in that range? Or is it something that depends on the exam?

    • @juva
      @juva  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Montse! I'm so glad you like the video :). So great that you are going to take the TOEFL! If you sum up your correct answers in TOEFL Reading you get your raw score. ETS then converts this raw score to a scaled score. ETS does not seem to have published their formula, so you can only guess your scaled score. I would do a rough estimate depending on whether you got only a few answers wrong or more. Hope this helps :)

    Hi Juva. I have a question for you.
    I took my TOEFL home edition a few months back and I got so surprised with my results. I had expected to score high on reading and low on speaking. But to my surprise, I scored 27 in speaking and just 16 in reading. Writing and listening I scored 22 and 23.
    Now I am practising and plan to re-take the test late february, as I have already got conditional offers for three universities. Obviously, I need to get the reading score up especially :P ..
    In this video, and others you've made, you mention this strategy you use on the reading section, whereas you want to scan the passage rather than reading them in detail. I did this, but in my test I also got questions where I had to choose sentences that best describe the WHOLE passage, those counted for two points. By doing this 'scanning' I simply ended up not having an understanding of the passage and probably chose wrong answers. Hope this make's sense.
    So my question for you is, what would you recommend me focussing on and trying to do to improve my reading score for my next test?
    Kind Regards.

    • @juva
      @juva  3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Hi Dennis, congratulations for your scores, 27 in Speaking is amazing! TOEFL Reading is really hard, but you can definitely improve quickly if you know what to do. It's true that I recommend skimming the text, but only when you start with the passage. You need to read it in detail at some point because otherwise you cannot answer the questions. Therefore, I'd recommend the following:
      1. Skim the passage to get a rough idea of where the information is located
      2. Read the first question carefully
      3. Go back to that part of the passage that is relevant for this question and read it in detail - since you skimmed the passage before you will know where you can find the information
      4. Answer the question
      5. Go on with the next question and repeat the whole procedure
      If you do it like this, you should improve quickly. Hope this helps :)

      @@juva Thank you for the reply, it sure helps. One thing I encountered as a big issue is that I have never studied biology, physics and history in English before. Only in Danish. And these subjects came up in the TOEFL reading section for me, which introduced words I have never seen or read before.. This probably made my general understanding even worse of the texts.. I now am in the situation where I feel like this is hard to improve.. But I've studied my bachelor in innovation and entrepreneurship partly in English, so to score 16/30 in reading really surprised me.. How would you recommend me to practise for the test further? If it is TOEFL Reading, have a look at my videos about reading strategies and question types. If it is TOEFL Writing, practice writing essays and make sure that you include everything that gets you a high score. Have a look at my playlists and pick the videos you need. If you have any questions, put them in the comments, I'll be happy to answer them. Hope this helps :).

      Hi Soroush, so great that you want to take the TOEFL! I'd recommend this: first, figure out your strengths and weaknesses. Have a look at my playlists for a general overview and then pick what you need. If you have any questions, put them in the comments, I'll be happy to answer them :).

    All throughout the video I was thinking 'where is the strategy (or strategies)'?

    • @juva
      @juva  ปีที่แล้ว

      The idea is that every task in the TOEFL has a specific pattern. For example, in TOEFL Reading you always get the same question types. Thus, a good strategy to approach Reading is to study the question types and learn how to read efficiently. If you don't have much time to study, it's a good idea to focus on this for 1 or 2 days and then move on to the next task. Another example is TOEFL Writing. The structure and sentence starters of the integrated and independent essay are always the same. Hence, if you want to improve your score quickly, I recommend focusing on this for 1 or 2 days. Templates are very helpful here because they provide you with a broad range of vocabulary and the correct structure. I hope it's clear now 😀.

      Hi 😀 The best way is to write down key words only. This saves time and allows you to concentrate on the lecture.
