@@servicedoguniverse2642 definitely! If the dog had bit Suki instead it could have dire consequences for Suki, I've heard stories of dogs having to be washed because they were attacked by another dog.
My husband PUNCHED a dog years ago that was charging my SDiT at the time! It was unfortunately a pit bull (love the breed, hate the bad rap!). I wasn't there at the time (can't remember why) and he and the kids were at the river cooling off one summer. This pit sees my SDiT splashing around at the water's edge and beelines for her - - get this - - DRAGGING a lawn chair! Not sure WHY the owner thought that a 7 pound lawn chair was going to hold a powerful dog like that, but certainly his IQ was a bit on the light side too! Hubby sees it coming, shoves my dog deeper into the water, and steps in front of her. He yelled at the pit, which it ignored, and then just slammed it between the eyes with his fist! It stopped in its tracks, looked up seeing him for the first time, and turned tail and ran back to the owner! The guy was furious, but there were enough witnesses that it didn't escalate. The funniest part is that my husband is not an aggressive, macho-type guy that loses his mind during confrontations! I was just happy that he was there and that he did something because my SDiT at that time would've certainly been mauled to death! As nasty as it sounds, I wouldn't hesitate to kick, grab, throw, our clobber the crap out of a dog that charges in at my SD! She's incredibly important to me, and I'd protect her with whatever I had to in order to keep her safe!
I would kick a dog if it was going after my service dog just to protect my dog and I would start yelling at the handle to get that shit out of there. Even if it is the handlers fault for how they raised the "therapy dog" I would'nt care at the moment.

I train my pet dog in a lot of public stores, but if dogs cant handle the environment (including a lot of SDs I see), don't bring them out in these environments that stress them out. Handler trained SDs are the most stressed out dogs I see in PA. Poor things.
Therapy dogs have to go through training too. Just like service dogs. Just because it doesn't do tasks does not mean that it doesn't need training. These therapy dogs have a job to do, they need to handle situations like a service dog would handle a situation. They need to be calm, etc. This dog is a fake therapy dog. there's no doubt in my mind. I'm sorry this had happened to you.
So sorry this happened to you two. I plan on carrying mace with me for this exact reason. Everytime I protect my dog by yelling and kicking the dogs, but the other day, I got fed up and flat out told the owner that A) Service dogs are federally protected under the ADA and B) that I knew their farm broke several health codes so if those fucking dogs attack us one more time, I’m calling the appropriate authorities. I realize that kicking a dog isn't something anyone wants to do, however in an emergency situation where my dog is in danger I will do whatever is necessary to keep her safe ❤️
Therapy dogs are working dogs and need to go through behavioural testing before working with an organization. The training requirements are actually much stricter under a therapy dog program then under the ADA for service dogs.Just like service dogs you can buy vests from anywhere (which is fine) and claim your dog to be anything. This wasn't a therapy dog. Therapy dogs must remain calm and neutral in extremely high distracting environments. Their work is highly respected. Plus almost all programs state the difference between SDs and therapy dogs in your contract when you become a volunteer. You sign off saying you will not pose your therapy dog as an SD.
You should have called the cops just so the case make a record of what happened. Then I will find a good lawyer and have at it. I am not the suing kind, but sometimes that is the only way a person get the idea to KEEP THAT DOG AWAY,
Of the civilian working dogs, therapy dogs are the most managed. Therapy dogs are actually required to go through a lot of training and pass a test in many states. You're absolutely right they should screen them to make sure they actually are therapy dogs. I don't know what the laws allow businesses to ask regarding therapy animals, but if it isn't representing a therapy group/organization or can't provide proof of training or experience I wouldn't allow it there. That's my opinion and perspective though, people may disagree and that's okay.
