    Am living in Ohio. Nice to see your group. I have used and trained service dogs for almost 20 years. I think you will find that MOST dogs growl and carry on as they come at you and your service dog. The first thing I always do is tell my dog down. Just having him in a submissive posture will often prevent an attacks. Also, the worse thing we as handlers can do is to panic and drag our dogs away or whatever. This teaches your dog that dogs are to be afraid of. YOU are his leader and he will follow your lead. If you stay calm, then he will be calm. Just some thoughts.
    Nice to see you had a big group at the fair.

    Why do you seem hateful about the lady asking questions I get the one that just walked up and tried to pet them but the other lady was just asking. As a handler I dont mind questions as it helps inform people and it helps with future interactions

    • @iceysue
      @iceysue 6 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      I think one of the issues are, service dogs have a job, they need to always keep watch of there owners to make sure to remind them of medications and to monitor thier health. If you give unwanted attention to them like, petting them while they're in training. They will take there eyes off the owners and learn to gain attention from other people. Thus, leaving there owners without a warning when to monitor their next time they need their medication.

    • @barbaravance6774
      @barbaravance6774 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I don't have mine yet but, I can see becoming very frustrated with people. Between the ones who just walk up, let their kids walk up and petting them, to the ones just staring at you/them like you have an alien on a lesh. I was kind of shocked at peoples reactions when I started looking into a service dog. Maybe It's how I was raised. I'm a military brat and lived on bases and all over, including Europe. I notice people in Europe don't do these things in large part. I think it helps that you can socialize them better because you can take them almost everywhere. But, even kids don't just squeal and rush up to pet them! I was told as a kid and taught my son's, you don't approach a strange dog ever without asking first.

      Before I got my hair cut people thought I was a lost service dog. I tried to explain that they could only ask me two questions. One... why do I stand on two legs and talk?... Two... What tasks do I perform to convince people I’m human?

  • @Bofadee
    @Bofadee 5 ปีที่แล้ว +6

    i hate it when people pet service dogs and dogs in general especially without asking like what if it's vicious, or the owner just doesn't want you to pet the dog. (service dogs) what if my service dog misses an alert because someone wants to be ignorant and selfish. i have been in a coma for 3 weeks before because my service dog missed an alert by someone distracting it. people just need to respect other people wishes

My seizures are under control at this time, but many people don’t know there is so much more to epilepsy than just the seizures. There are side-effects of the seizures and the anti-seizure medications have some really nasty side-effects also. Yup, lots of fun

    My SD just turned 11 months and she is in her 2nd fear imprint period, which is made even more challenging because of the fake service dogs and the “dogs love me”cretins who “have” to pet or distract her. Whenever I can get away with it, I remove the service vest because she looks quite fierce (Cane Corso. She looks like a giant Pitbull) and people do give us space... out of fear. But anywhere I need her to have access, she wears her vest and everytime I have to be ready to step in between her and a dog or person. Every freaking time. She’s a PTSD service dog and a PTSD related Tachycardia response/alert dog (she either warns me before I pass out or she can bring me back if I’m already down) , she calms down triggers, anxiety, panic. Fake service dogs can totally ruin the day and their owners are always worse than the dogs themselves. Entitled people suck.

    I love Suki! I am currently training my own Seizure Aleart dog. This is all very new to me, just started recently having seizure a few months ago. My 1.5 yr rescue has pittie alearting to me to almost everyone one if them starting with the very 1st one . I am a dog trainer myself and have already been working with her on public Access because she attends work with me (I work for a vet hospital) and she is pretty much on point with that part. However I would love to ask you some training questions on response. She does try to role me on my side while In in a seizure and I will come to with her laying on me licking my face (have read they do that because of the saliva) . I would just love the chance to talk to you on other responding task for seziures aleart and response.

    So I have watched a lot of real service vs fake service dogs videos and I have a question. A lot of fake service dogs are running around off the leash and obviously not trained. What if something happens to the owner and the dog needs to go get help from a stranger, how do you tell a service dog is in distress trying to get help for the owner vs a fake service dog just roaming around?

    • @servicedoguniverse2642
      @servicedoguniverse2642  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      A service dog will be exhibiting deliberate and trained behavior and not sniffing around, whereas an untrained dog will be wandering or running around sniffing and greeting people at random

    There seems to be so many fakes now which is so bloody unfair, so for that reason I do think having an official license or document so that those dishonest people trying to scam the system can be weeded out. It makes me so angry because they’re showing absolutely no respect for those who actually need and depend on the dogs but for the dogs themselves and the wonderful people who invest in the training.

      Well, I’m going to give a personal example to hopefully help you understand why people choose this path.
      I have PTSD, asthma, some minor balance problems, and while I’m still on a waiting list to be seen for proper diagnosing, it is believed that I have autism.
      To find a program that serves me, I have to completely throw away my PTSD, because I am not a veteran and all programs under $15,000 that serve my area exclusively provide PTSD dogs to veterans.
      My asthma and balance issues are not severe enough to be considered disabilities under the ADA, so while a dog could help with at least my balance, that alone would not be enough to get accepted into a program waitlist for mobility dogs.
      Now onto the autism. Even if I get a proper diagnosis, there is a single program that will train autism assistance dogs for adults that I could find in the entire US. It is close to me, but they of course would need to see medical documents showing that I am autistic.
      My PTSD and autism have increasingly been a problem ever since I reached adulthood and I was beginning to withdraw from the outside world, having panic attacks and/or meltdowns on almost every outing and being unable to spend more 3 minutes in tighter areas, like checkout, due to the feeling of being trapped. I also couldn’t leave the house on my own, so my boyfriend had to accompany me everywhere, which wasn’t fair to him. He’s my boyfriend, not my caretaker, he should be able to walk away from me in a store without me needing hours to function again.
      So, I was faced with a choice. Do I continue to wait on the somehow 3 year long waitlist to even see a mental health professional and then wait another 2-5 years after putting in the application, praying that my asthma and balance issues didn’t disqualify me from their program, waiting for a service dog to be placed with me? Or...do I start talking to obedience trainers in my area, doing hours upon hours of research regarding dog training, and find a good candidate pup to start working for me in as little as 1-2 years?
      Owner training isn’t always on your own. Many owner trained dogs attend professionally guided obedience classes and socializing groups. It is only certain etiquette and tasks that we are left training on our own most the time. Even then, however, we can find more experienced owner trainers or even go to a private trainer that is open to training tasks. This would still be considered owner training as it’s still your dog and not associated with a program.
