I keep mine at 8 which is quite aggressive, but I use Gilette silver-blue blades which are reasonably sharp but very smooth and don't catch like I found sharper blades like Feather do.
8, you animal, but to be fair you need that level of aggressiveness to cut through your wire like mane :)
Sound advice, not to use Brasso when rubbing the shaft.

Don't use kettle descaler either. My friend did that to his slim and stripped off all the nickel. It wasn't even limescale, just shaving soap residue which looks similar.
I have used Autosol on some to get them nice and shiny. So long as you understand that you're attacking the plating to get it shiny and you can't do it much it's fine.
Ah a double edge user? good work. When I abandoned cartridge razors I started on straight razors but it was too much hassle. I then got a slim but my current razor of choice is a Rex Ambassador. I have many others including a Merkur Vision 2000 which are impossible to get now. Quite a fan of the slant razors too, they cut through the stubble so easily.
Ooo yeah, when I first started I was quite keen on all the wet shaving stuff, I even have a fair few videos on the subject if I am not mistaken. If you are bored, seek out a few. Even a rolls Razor one I think.
I absolutely love my Merkur Futur. You should try the Vision 2000. It is a tool. 😄

I fancied a new double edge razor a while back and fancied the look of the Merkur Futur Razor, however it went back as it was more like a lethal weapon than razor. I then opted
for a Merkur 34C DE which is far nicer and does a good job, plus it doesn't require 15 bits of toilet paper being stuck to my face afterwards :)
The futur is a horrible razor, dangerous in operation and dangerous by design 😂

I have one in a drawer. The Vision 2000 is just as bulky but works better. Not that I've used it for ages.
The Pearl Flexi is getting pretty good reviews, more of a budget option than the Rex Ambassador.
I like being 'warned' by the exposed razor blade ends near my nostrils, the fact that they're covered on the Futur made shaving near there a total act of frustration.
nice. I have quite a few old Gillette safety razors, been trying to get a nice british rhodium aristocrat :( some of my 1950s gold ones have lost all its plating.
I am wondering if it would be folly or of interest to anyone if I attempt to design, 3D print and use a DE razor! What do you think?
@@backofficeshow I think, if you can get good tolerance from the bar to the blade with a specific blade gap, it might work. depending on materials maybe? I dont know... but FOR SCIENCE!!

I soaked the head of my black beauty in PB Blaster overnight, pulled it out and cleaned with a soft towel n q-tips, and its perfect. 😊
don't like the futur ether but my 35c BROKE and all I have is that or a Muhle R41 which is far too close a shave for me
I might try to see if anyone has something interesting to swap for the futur. I really wanted to like it, it does look cool, but a lot can be said with form over function. I think butterfly designs are the most superior, and after them, I am quite happy even with screw in blades. I think the former offers idiot-proof ease of use and the latter makes you give appropriate attention. The futur on the otherhand leads you into a false sense of security and will cut you!
the fat boy like that one are the hardest to get here in the states, when you do see one it will cost you dearly. the one you have would be the perfect one to replate
They aren't that hard to find, just hit all the antique shops. I got at least 20 vintage Gillettes in the last month. Average price is $5.00 to $10.00.
I use a Russian clone of this. NOS from the 80s.
How close is the Russian clone?
@@backofficeshow, identical. Badger & Blade have it listed in their forum. It comes in a two tone, t-shaped, flip open plastic box that has various colours, cream or black bottom and in my case, a very dark, see through plastic in rather sinister blackcurrant/violet plastic. Other options I've seen are plain see through. Smokey yellow and also cherry. Very eighties, Soviet vibe to the design. Great stylised Cyrillic on the outer card box as well.
@@TattiePeeler it sounds like a nice piece of it comes with the box. I think Soviet era items have a unique nostalgia for anyone around in the 80s

Soviet razor was manufactured late October 1987.
I just buy razor heads now and attach them to a big shaft of steel. Currently a short stubby handle from Maggard Razors, with a Mühle R89 razor head. Monsavon shaving cream (stash), pre Unilever takeover. Contains sodium tallowate.
A good shaving lube is something I need to sort. The one in my bowl seems knackered. I have plenty of packs but it's time to bin the old one.
