- Restoring a Vintage Double Edge Safety Razor - The Gillette 195 Adjustable Double Edge Safety Razor, also known as the "Fatboy" was made for just over 3 years between 1958 D-3 and 1962 H-1. The models from 1958 D-3 through 1960 F-2 are of interest among shaving enthusiasts and collectors because of their high restore-ability.
In this video, we restored a 1960 F-1 version, that had heavy signs of wear, rust, deformations, etc. The razor was disassembled to its 13 pieces, thoroughly cleaned, buffed and polished with fine steel wool before nickel plating it to bring back its original shine. Deep scratches and deformations could not be restored fully, as it would require a great deal of stripping to its brass layer. It's not an impossible task but not worth doing. You may even appreciate it's aged quality.
Though nickel plating (electroplating with nickel) wasn't necessary for the restoration of this safety razor, minor rusts present needed to be covered that could creep deeper into the metal over time. Should you decide to plate your razor, make sure you do it at low amperage, around 200mAh is good and no more than 500mAh. At higher amperage, the plating will be very uneven.
Restoring anything vintage is certainly a love of labor. Taking it all apart helps you to appreciate the original work more. You'll need to decide how much of the original work needs to be untouched beyond simple clean and polish. We are trying to restore, not replace, after all.

Ferenc, please be careful and take your time. Tools are great but they can also destroy your delicate razor without the proper know-how. Most of the skills were attained through trial and error, which can be an expensive hobby.

I would like to replace my vintage razors in rhodium and gold. I’m thinking of buying a replating kit. What would you recommend for the average user?
Edit: I just bought what I think (not %100 sure) is a notched t-bar 1947-50 Superspeed in great condition that I would like to replate in rhodium for my collection. Also, turn one of my Gillette Slim adjustable’s to either rhodium or gold. I have a few more on the way as well. I’m just trying to learn technique so I can do it right the first time. I got a place where I think has a starter kit but it’s expensive and I’ve seen cheaper kits than $5k wondering if that would affect the quality of the plating?
I am glad I did not toss mine away... this is my 2nd. The first was my grandfather's and that one went in the trash. I need the dremel and brush assembly. I still don't know what chemicals solutions were used. Mine has a black base and the black paint is peeling off.

Ouch! Be careful with tools. To be honest, it can happen even at the hands of a skilled person.

Could you please share what to look out for when using a dremel?
Yesterday my “FLITZ” polish and “TESTORS” enamel paint came in the mail so gave my 1964 Gillette Slim Adjustable and my 1969 Gillette Black beauty a nice Polish and repainted the adjuster numbers on the dial! To be honest it already was in good condition but now it looks a lot better with that nice shine on it. When I went to go clean it a while ago with the toothbrush I took the numbers off you would be surprised how easily they come off.

This is a realy complicated procedure requires hardwork and patience, I have got one Gillette Black Beauty adjustable razor in working condition, and can't even think of doing so moreover in INDIA I don't think anyone would be doing it 🙏🙏🙏

Sure, you simply need a center positioning die that helps to round out the dent with careful even push. Here is the set we used www.amazon.com/dp/B00TNWOUSO/ but please be advised that you could easily overdo the push and thin out--or worse, crack--the edges on handles made from softer metals.

I am restoring a 1960 F2 Fatboy, the brush nickle technique is a nightmare!! My spring steel has snapped as well. Do you know where these can be obtained? Great video.
Hi Peter, parts aren't available for replacement. You could try eBay for another one that's damaged but worth buying for its parts.
Or make one yourself out of a foldback bulldog binder clip.

Are the newer ones 1960 F-3 to 1961 G-4 not as restorable?
Those series of razors are all restorable because Gillette used similar mechanism across the line with varying size, haft, etc.
The only difference is how you take the washer off that holds the spring. It doesn’t twist off, you have to uncrimp it and recrimp it to put it back together.

They sold them for that but it cost more than that to make them.

Thankfully all my vintage Gillette’s look new and they are 64+ years old. Only one needs the blade gap adjusted. Costs $30 to send it off and have it polished/adjusted…replating is another $30.
