Well, a refurbed Fatboy could cost north of $200 depending on the finish and original purchase price. My new Fatguy shod last generations and shaves absolutely identical to my Fatboy. My new Fatguy is worth every penny imho. It really is a quality razor and a solid replica of the Fatboy.

Matt, I just want to say, that I really appreciate an 'honest' product review. It seems most of the other shaving reviewers have never met a product that they didn't like. So it's refreshing to find one that will point out the not-so-good points, as well as the good. That make it a lot easy for us consumers to make a intelligent choice. Keep up the good work.

Here you have a real expert in end-to-end razor design, testing, manufacturing, and marketing. Matt speaks as a true expert and he calls it the way he sees it. I appreciate that a lot. Matt, thank you for the review. I bought one during the fundraising campaign for $89, and I'm looking forward to it. I didn't have a Fatboy at the time, but bought one while waiting for the Fatguy's delivery. What captured my attention was the homage being paid to this iconic wet-shaving tech. I am allergic to nickel, but have not had any issues with shaving using vintage razors plated in nickel. In my instance at least, you are correct in that I only have a reaction if I’m wearing a watch or necklace with nickel in it (looks like chicken pox and itches as such, but localized to the area of contact). So I have not let that affect my decisions when it comes to razors, though I did choose to try this fatguy in the gold finish.

Matt, you are biased, but regarding shaving gear, new and old, I am biased too.
The things you've mentioned, are details that every one of us would see and say out loud, plus you haven't mentioned the difference in weight.
Long story short : If we put how the original fatboy stood the test of time, their history and ultimately their value in the future, if someone is not happy with the way it shaves and wants to sell it, the new fat guy fails short in my eyes.
If the fat guy was made from stainless steel, then it would be a razor that I would consider buying.

All of my modern de razors shave better than a Fatboy or any twist to open Gillette. Gillette twist to open was their first "gimmick" (WOW, isn't that cool and modern, LMFAO) in a long line of gimmicks to come. Find me 1 adjustable Gillette that shaves as good as my progress, I honestly think this YMMV is claimed by the brainwashed. I don't get it either.

The first thing I noticed on my FatGuy was the chrome was bubbling on one of the barn doors on the inside and also on parts of the center bar under the barn doors. On top of that, I had difficulty turning the razor to open it. I had to apply a lot of oil to the razor and work it open and close it for several hours but that did not totally solve the problem. I wrote to Global shave and I was told to use it for 2 months to see if the screw mechanism would work itself out. That did not sit well with me so I told Global shave that I wanted to return it. Sheldon then asked me to give it a second chance if he would send me a new razor. Several weeks ago, I wrote to him and asked him if he had sent the razor because after waiting for an extended period of time I never got the razor. He wrote back and told me that it had been sent....Well, I still have not gotten the razor..I asked my viewers what I should do...take the new razor or the money. Most of my viewers said to take the money and run...lol. I went against them and told Global that I would give it a second chance and that WAS A BIG MISTAKE. Shame on me. I am extremely disappointed, not only with the product but more so with their customer support. I should have bought one off of ebay and had it refinished. I learned my lesson.

Matt, everything you have said is watertight and even your bias is transparent. Thank you.
No company today can profit from reproducing the quality of the things produced yesteryear. Less people encouraged higher standards of less required quota. To see a attempt at that quality, even a 7/10, from an aspiring company startup, is worthy of great respect. And, that machinery is expensive, so the starting price tag of $150 is understandable. That figure may even become more attractive in the near future as inflation continues to reflect heavily on the current vintage market.

    That was a fantastic review.
The fat boy is one of those razors that I am still missing in my humble collection.
I haven't been interested at all in the fat guy replica for a couple of simple reasons.
First reason is obvious I would much rather have an original Gillette Fatboy instead of a modern made copy.
And second is that chrome finish. I am a huge fan of the original factory nickel look and personally feel that chrome plating just looks kind of cheap.

Matt, I received my FatGuy last week. I've shaved with it 3 times and so far the shaves have been smooth, comfortable, and nick-free from setting 5 to setting 1. I have never used the original FatBoy so I can't compare them. But I can say that the issues you brought up with the FatGuy you reviewed were not apparent with mine. First, the razor does not wobble when I stand it up on the counter. Second, the TTO doors are flush and do not move. And third, to my naked eye, the blade alignment and gap look as good as any other razor I own. Even my Rex Ambassador. So, I'm going to surmise that the razor you reviewed definitely came from one of the earlier production runs. From a quality and build perspective, I will agree that not too many safety razors will ever match up with my Ambassador. But I will say that I have enjoyed my FatGuy shaves and am happy to have it in my collection.

I have just taken delivery of my Fatguy, and while I have had a smooth shave from it, and it doesn’t wobble when standing up, it definitely does have issues with the alignment of the TTO doors. They don’t close cleanly and I have to push them fully closed. Even then, there is still a gap. I have several other Gillette adjustables that don’t have this at all. The only time I ever saw doors not closing fully before was on one of those $1 safety razors from Dollar Tree. It is an okay razor, and I’ll use it, but it’s not on a par with Gillette quality, and not worth the hefty price for what it is.

Very thorough and thoughtful review. While I applaud the efforts to create a tribute or a reproduction of a classic such as the Fat Boy, at the end of the day, Gillette towers over this Fat Guy. "Accept no imitations" applies. As pointed out by Matt, easily less than $100, you can obtain the Real McCoy, with unmatched engineering and quality control. Create a stainless steel version, with tighter QC, and I'm aboard for it, and that would be a true mark of distinction, worthy of considering for purchase.

The concern about the piece being brass, brass is a self-lubricating metal and can be great for moving parts that constantly rub. However, I don't have that razor so I can't speak to how much exposure to rubbing that specific piece gets. And like you said, they're fairly prone to corrosion if not in constant use and lubricating themselves.

Matt💈💈👍👍 Right on bro, thanks for the true review. First for me is the source of materials, this "Fatguy" is no in house made razor. Too many suppliers of parts means tolerances will not be as precise as the original. I have several original Gillette 1.95 "Fatboys" including one NIB, never used. 60+ years later they still look and work like new. Enjoy!

My Dad uncles and Grandad all used a British made De Gillette Rockets or similar all their lives, they never needed an adjustable razor, in fact, I cannot remember that many adjustable for sale here in the UK. The first adjustable with a dial was a Merkur, wasn't it? Gillette was and still are good at creating a gimmick to sell more of their products, they must hate the resurgence of a simpler way of shaving. Then maybe it is the utilitarian mindset of previous generations here in the UK in that if it isn't broke don't fix it and rampant consumerism, unlike America was much slower arriving here.
Anyway getting back to the aforementioned Gillette Rocket I still have my late uncle's example and it still functions well, as for stamping shops there probably aren't as many available, whilst after the second war both the USA and the UK had numerous such tooling and presses from the war production of arms, ordnance and also a skilled workforce. I have an adjustable ie a Merkur Progress, I've also tried a future and a Gillette Slim Jim, but my adjustable? well, I find I just set it at 3 and that's where it stays. I did toy with the idea of buying a Rex ambassador but I'm not that sold on adjustable de-razors due to growing up watching my Dad and uncles etc, with a fixed gap razor, so like them I don't see the point. I have recently bought a Rex Envoy and it suits all my shaving needs, so I'll be sticking with that and I'll hand both my Gillette Rocket and Rex Envoy on to further generations because such is the quality of both razors, they will outlive me.

Matt I this video helped me a lot in my decision. I wanted to buy the fat guy to use it more frequent and protect bit my 1960 genuine Fatboy. As I am from Germany there are not many options for service or restoration. Finally I refrain from buying one continuing using my original - if needed I will reach out to Razor Emporium what can be the best option for my old one - but hopefully he will last until I hand it over to my son one day . He ist just 16 and started the traditional wet shaving with Gillettes King C razor + King R Emporium soap which he loves most from my entire collection. Thanks again .

It's priced over $100 and looks like flimsy construction. That unfinished brass ring looks wrong. Makes the razor look already old. WTF Sheldon, did you get these made in some cheap Chinese factory? You give Montreal a bad reputation. For over $100 you can get an outstanding all stainless piece of art like the Envoy from Rex, Dart from Blackland, or even the Outlaw from Alpha Shaving. Matt is extremely generous with his 7-8 score out of 10. I'm leaning more towards a 5.

*It’s a nice piece for sure but the build quality is suspect and being partly made overseas who knows the tolerances* But… I’m glad that somebody actual took the time to replicate a Fatboy. However, I don’t like the chrome finish, even before this video I watched kensurfs and it didn’t appeal to me but YMMV. *But hopefully they keep at it and maybe improve on the build quality because people that buy these want them to last and have the tightest tolerances*…. I’m glad they took a shot though. It’s about time to inspire someone to build an exact quality replica… even if it means the razor will be pricey, us wet shavers are willing to pay for quality. If the price goes down and they offer a different finish I might try it. But, just got my Fatboy and it needs a slight blade gap adjustment but I can still shave with it and the quality I’m sure isn’t better than the original. I’m gonna send it in and have it tip top. Again, I like the razor and the fact they took the shot at a vintage Gillette makes me happy … maybe try another model? *Aristocrat* hint hint… ehh emm rhodium…

There must be a reason Matt never ventured into making another $1.95, Gillette should do that.. He took whatever he thought about the $1.95 and everything he learned taking them apart and all off that amalgamated into the Rex Ambassador. That is my thoughts.
