How does this work for someone trying to transition industries? All of my referrals are people I’ve met online. I haven’t been able to get an interview with referrals, only through directly applying without referrals. All of my former co-workers worked in nonprofits while I’m trying to transition to tech for marketing.
Sorry to hear that! I think it depends on the market conditions and the people you meet. But usually, the people you meet only online aren't the strongest referrals since they've never worked with you so they can't talk about how good you are at your job. When I switched industries, I tried to network with people who already made the switch I want to make, they were more empathetic to my situation and willing to go above to help me
@@CareerShakers that's a good point. She used to be at the level right below the board, a quite high management level. And she said to me if I want I can contact her as a referral even after her retirement. I also have other contacts who are still working there, but a lower level. I'm wondering to whom should I ask for the favor.
How filthy this process has become. Referrals are making it difficult for introvert people who have good set of skills and knowledge. Also, one has to be a people pleasing personality so that their ex-colleagues can be used as a 'referral'. All looks so fake and disgusting.

If they still have connections at that company, yes! If they're no longer working at the company they won't be able to refer you themselves
