    Car dependency ruins things for drivers too. It turns it into a necessary evil, people who aren't into driving have to drive, and ruins roads and makes them not as safe.

      That's actually a good point. I love cars, and I used to be really really critical about all of this urbanism, but I'm discovering that they aren't Anti-car, just Anti-car dependency. I looooooove riding Bike Share bikes around Toronto and not having to drive down there, then getting stuck in traffic on my drive back home. Cars should go the way of the Motorcycle, be something you want, not something you need. Also it's kind of evil that families have to go into $20k worth of debt, spend nearly $10k a year, just to go to the grocery store or work so they can pay off the debt from the car.

      I’m a distance runner and I could go on for days about how inconvenient it is for me. My only options here in my home town are roads. Not too bad unless I need to do more than 1.5 miles in which case I’m forced onto a busy connecting road where my life is at the mercy of drivers.

      ​@@coastaku1954I think it's fair to say that there's a _very_ vocal minority who are about banning all cars, or at least human drivers. The comment section is filled with comments which blame cars, instead of the root cause which is car _dependency._ I don't like driving to commute, I'd much rather have other options. But I still like to drive. It's nice to drive through the mountains on weekends in a car or on a motorcycle.

    I'm 35, I don't have a driving license and either work remotely or at an 8-minute away office. That sounded good until Irealize that's the only job I could take without taking the car for a 30-minute ride because public transport sucks.

      agree and disagree at the end thanks to a car you are not depended on the few places you have in your area which is a big benefit but public transport is also important for everyone who doesn't have a car. but then you're limited to the places the tracks go.

      Without a car you can't really travel as freely, you would be confined mostly to your local area like in the past and every trip would require way more planning and time. Some trips might be even impossible.

    Fun fact: The “nyom” noise you hear at 0:19 is from when a fan at the US Grand Prix (Formula 1) spotted one of the broadcast microphones up on the big spectator tower.
    He did a bunch of these noises and they appeared live on the world feed, so you had the commentators... commentating, while a random guy was going “neow!” every few seconds 😄

    1:57 - Tapakapa somehow puts my character in the exact situation I'm in - There are 10 buses every day, 6AM, 7AM and 7:30AM, then 9:15AM, then 1:35PM, and then following that are two buses that only operate during the school term (3:15PM and 4:05PM) and then we end the day with a 5PM, a 5:30PM and a 6PM. No other buses that aren't exclusively for schools. It's ridiculous.

    Where I grew up in New Zealand, there was nothing within walking distance except detached housing. No local cafe, pub, restaurant, grocery store, nothin'. I didn't have a car so I was trapped at home. If I wanted to do anything besides wander aimlessly around the neighbourhood, I would walk to the bus stop for a bus that would often never come, and endure the sometimes 40-50 minute journey to the hollowed-out, half-vacant, car-infested city centre. A journey that would otherwise take 15 minutes by car, I must add.
    Needless to say, my childhood sucked, I had no sense of community or independence, and I had to rely on my parents to shuttle me around everywhere or drive me to a friend's place to stay the night. Shit that I should have had the freedom to do *on my own.* All because of braindead car culture ideology. Allowing a child to grow up in a car-dependent suburban environment like that is borderline child abuse imho. I'd go as far as to argue that it _is_ child abuse. I will NEVER allow my kids to endure what I went through. It's the main reason I moved to the UK, along with the housing crisis and skyrocketing cost of living for even the shittiest areas back in NZ.

      Yea sorry this is almost certainly not true anywhere in the world. By global statistics, all vehicular accidents account for around 2% of deaths- true, most of these are probably done by cars, and this stat doesn't account for non-fatal accidents, but still, this places cars below suicide in terms of number of deaths. Given how many cars there are vs how many acutely suicidal people there are, this would suggest cars are actually remarkably safe given their destructive potential.
      Or maybe it doesn't, I'm not a statistician, that's just an inference I'm making.

    As someone who has just read Happy City after following NJB, City Beautiful, and the Life Sized City for several months, this video makes me very happy :) The growing awareness of urbanism and its importance for human wellbeing is great to see.

      Its also Important to have healthy towns. Of course we have to use cars*, but its a long shot from the desolate desserts that are american suburbs. In general Towns and Cities should avoid becoming like their american counterparts *i mean its more enticing to us that for the people in the cities

      I had read Happy City, or at least large portions of it, during a planning class, which I took just as City Beautiful, NJB, and the like were either starting off, or about to get off the ground. It's been incredible to see urbanism go from a thing people pretend to do in Cities Skylines to a network of creators producing actual urbanism-focused content.

    Cars might be the freedom to get somewhere fast without a schedule, but your legs were the freedom to go anywhere locally with little impediment, something cars have taken from us with unending lanes of traffic and parking lots.

    As someone who lives in a "country" area I feel this video.
    10km walk.
    30 min buss ride that costs an ok amount of money.
    2 min drive including finding somewhere to park and it's cheaper over the long term.

      @jaep struiksma I get that now, actually. I want choice and ease of travel, I shouldn't be forced to drive everywhere I go, nor should I be forced to take transit, bike, or walk. Good cities give choice between those 4 main modes. And good countries let me choose between the Car, Train, and Plane for longer distance trips. Toronto to Montreal is the only route like this, where you actually have a choice between the 401, Air Canada or Via Rail

      @@mejman2 Well frankly "wants" are irrelevant. Say I want to be able to land my plane in the street. That's ridiculous right? Well everybody 'wanting' to have a car is too when you really look at it. Society should always be about what does the most good for the most people, without needlessly harming smaller groups. There's no 'harm' caused to car lovers by giving them equally fast options.

      @@wursthans852 you can actually transport a lot on bicycles, but that is beside the point: walkable/cycleable cities can still support car traffic perfectly fine. the inverse is not true for car-dependent cities.

      @@wursthans852 Bike trailers and luggage racks are a thing.
      But I would only would want to use them over the car when the infrastructure for it is there.
      Luckily I´m moving to the city soon, where I can go shopping by bike (which I am actually looking forward to). I will still keep my car for trips outside of the city, but it will be driven much less.

    in my city, all the important stuff gathers around the train station
    schools, shops, hospitals etc.
    theres a bus going to the station every few mins

      @@liberty.b.r a lot of European cities and towns are built like that, especially in Germany. In fact, generally European cities are built so living areas and working areas and shopping areas are all mixed around and not concentrated in separate places, which is probably one of the reasons there's more biking and walking here, and why public transport feels better.

    I agree. The problem isnt that cars are a form of transportation that we have access to. Its that for many people its the ONLY sensible mode of transportation.

    There's also the health benefits of promoting walking, biking, and public transport. The USA's obesity rate is disgusting, whereas if you go to the Netherlands you can see people, especially young people, looking fitter and leaner because they walk more. Having more walkable roads would definitely get people to exercise a bit more, which would make them happier and healthier in the long run.

      You do get death statistics for undereating. Although they are lower as addictive high calorie foods are everywhere, you'd have to go out of your way in the USA.
      They are who now? If this "they" had business in keeping some number of starvation related deaths hidden, why would that benefit them?     Cars are in fact such an inefficient method of transport that by building car-centric infrastructure, you will _always_ have traffic problems. If you build more and wider roads? They'll just fill up with cars. Make them wider still? More cars. That's what forcing people into cars leads to. This means that in foregoing car-centric infrastructure, people who like driving cars are among those with the most to gain. Surprise surprise, if you allow people to travel by other means than just cars, fewer people will use cars, and traffic will improve. This means you don't need ludicrously wide roads and everything can be more compact, leading to even fewer people being forced into cars. Not to mention that narrower roads are actually safer.

    i live in brazil, where the whole entire country, is built for cars. heck, the capital was built by a guy who was enfatuated with automobiles, and you can't turn an arcsecond without seing an automobile.
    i always get mad when i remember that *my own town* used to have a train station going right trough it, with a stop at it's sister city, now it's just a theatre that i only went once in my school life to watch a seminar on water or something.
    i lived in germany for a while, and loved the busses that kneeled for you, the trains gently coming to a stop beside you like a moving building. the way you could run around town with a bike with little issue. i remember seeing for the first time a laying down bike piloted by what i remember being a pensioner.

    this issue is something that's been bothering me about the city i live in as i've become more independent and need to actually think about how to get around. the bus system in my city is, by and large, mediocre, with most bus lines coming at 15 minute intervals at best, to once an hour at worst on the weekends (if they aren't cancelled, which the city does a poor job communicating)

    I’ve been without a car for a year (San Francisco). It’s encouraged me to look into new ways of getting around. I made use of the bus system. Got around via bicycle, and heck, I even got into motorcycling for a bit (easy to justify in a city setting).
    Not having to park, have a car payment, registration, or fuel/maintenance was a nice perks (albeit, my wages couldn’t justify the expense of a car anyhow)
    Now, I’ve obtained a job that pays me double what I was making previously but I needed a car to commute to my new job 100 miles DAILY. Public transit could have been an option but at the cost of doubling (or even tripling) my commute time, public transit was a hard sell.
    So I’m tying up a significant chunk of my income in a car (that I don’t even care about). I think it’s ridiculous that we force people into debt for appliances they don’t want and force them to pay registration fees, insurance, fuel costs, and maintenance fees. Buy an expensive vehicle and pay to maintain it. That’s asking too much from the average person that doesn’t care about driving.
    Not to mention the cost of sitting on over crowded roads every single day for several hours a week. It’s insane.
    I’ma car enthusiast and I love a great sports car. But forcing everyone to take on massive debt to operate and maintain a tool that DEPRECIATES is absurd.
    The amount we spend on cars every month could be used towards learning a new skill. Taking a class, investing in new technology, exercising, meeting people etc. I feel there are so many opportunities that car pension naturally robs us from.

    In much of Ohio, GM bought out the intercity rail system and replaced it with buses. Then, the buses went away, and now in north west Ohio where I went to college, there's small oasis towns that are difficult to leave without a car. It was culture shock for me as a Chicagoland native.

    The problem isn't the car, it is the Stroad. The car is meant as a replacement for the horse and buggy, for people in rural areas to get to town, Sprawl only happened because Roads and Stroads were built, and infrastructure of towns was extended to be near highways due to corporate lobbying, if Towns said No, we will not run sewer, electricity, and water to you miles outside of our town, most commercial businesses would not go there, and would be forced to stay in the Town. Of course the car would make it easier to live in the countryside, but those people would be on septic tanks, have no gas lines etc. Look at Dawson City in the Yukon, it is a proper town with no sprawl, even though most people work and exist outside of the town, they all drive to the walkable town to do commerce, because big box stroads have not been provided as the town will not extend the infrastructure outside of the town.

      @@aabb55777 It depends how remote a place is, if it is too remote, then it makes sense just to have houses hooked up to generators instead of drawing from the grid, but if a town has more than lets say 100 people, then that town should have electricity run to them.

    I can’t work without a car.. not only is work about a 45 minute drive from home, I start at every hour of the day, could be 3am, could be 10pm, could be 7am… public transport, absolutely not an option, Taxi, like £25 each way. I am a truck driver. And I absolutely need a car to do that job because I live in the city, and big gigantic shipping yards don’t set up in down town cities so they are always way out in the countryside. 🚘😒

I live in Russia, and thanks to how urban planning was done here, I can get to work, job or entertainment or any other place in the city on foot in 20-30 minutes. I don't need a car for my job or anything a do on a daily basis.
      You, on the other hand, need car, you do transportation. So, imagine how much better your job would become if, let's say, half of cars driven by single commutters are gone and replaced by a few busses? No trafic, no parking issues, faster speeds, etc.

    I love my car. I commute 36 miles each way to work in New Hampshire. How in the hell would I walk or ride a bicycle 72 miles a day? What about when it is raining or during the Winter when the temperatures are in the teens for months on end? Ridiculous concept to go without a car.

      Well look for somebody in your situation for now you need a car but what if you had a high-speed rail or fast bus (rapid bus) to get you there?? And you got to sit and comfort and chill the whole way??
      We need public transport alternatives to at least give people the ability to choose.

    I love cars for their ability to take you to wherever you want to go, especially in my country where there’s lots of rural areas and places outside of cities. But it’s true, we need to significantly change the car dependence of a lot of places. It seems America is starting to move into the right direction and stop building so much ridiculous suburban sprawl, but on the other hand my country is now going backwards and building car centric neighbourhoods rather than expanding suburbs like mine which are very walkable and built around public transit. I feel like cars should be banned inside cities and from the centres of big suburbs, it’s a big change but people need to accept it and I think the world would be a much better place with that system. You don’t even really need cars to commute, in my country trains can get you to most cities and a lot of towns and if we invested in that infrastructure again and linked every town back up like they were in the 1800s, you could commute anywhere via the train.

    This is an interesting video! I guess this explains why the car is so prevalent in today's society, and why my home country (the US) particularly clings so much to the car.
    As for the last question, I choose "freedom to choose"! The American once said that the car represents the freedom to travel anywhere. Well, if we have the freedom to ride a car, why not have the freedom to walk, cycle, or ride public transit as well?

      Why not have the freedom to bike etc? You do. But since roads allow the greatest possible uses (freight transport, emergency vehicles, personal transportation) that is the main form of transportation in the US.

      in Mexico there is no council in many small towns. I bought a place in Tulum and for a place that is supposed to be eco friendly it sure as is car centric. The resorts are building these maze-like places with only once access point, to supposedly have security. But what I think is this is making it harder for the workers that have to get to work in the absolute steam room that the Caribbean is during summer. I was just there and couldn’t fathom how the locals get anything done after walking in circles in that heat

    I live out in the country with absolutely no access to public transport. The only way I can get into work is by car. It does feel sort of worth it to me though. My neighbours aren't living on top of me, everything feels less congested and if I need to go out to buy anything it's just a 20 minute drive away.

      You do realize cars have been around for far over 100 years, and that city planning is an active and ongoing process for every city.
      If you actually watched the video, it's pretty evident that Tapakapa is talking about how modern city planning is problematic, not about the 1850's or whenever.
      As for the second part, no heckin' shifles. Of course, it isn't just one or the other. That's my whole point, that one saying "'Cars are not the problem' city planning is" misses out on the fact that cars are half of the feedback loop.
      It might've been unclear what I was trying to say (and for that I apologize), but I'm not trying to refute any of the facts posed in Tapakapa's video. I agree with all of them. I also agree with most of his claims. I merely take issue with the thesis. (And yes, I do recognize that Tapakapa was writing it as a hook, as "clickbait")

    Cars are also a lot more likely to injure their passengers or pedestrians than other sorts of vehicles just by statistical likelihood- there's more cars than planes and ships, and they operate closer to potential victims. If 40 people take a bus, only one driver has to be capable and responsible; if we assume this is 10 families of 4, that means now 10 people have to be capable and responsible.

    Here in rural BC they are spending another half a billion to further widen the highway. Tearing out vast swaths of forest, paving farmland, and eating away at scenic cliffs. We could of had a Greenway, with a food forest for the birds and bees… and have humans actually enjoying what nature has to offer. We are all stuck in a corporate car-culture c$$$ rut, and can’t seem to escape.

      @@killerkraut9179 well yes. The actual landscape footprint is smaller. Solar installed on the tops reduces infrastructure energy needs in the long run. Helps with the climate crisis asphalt, and fossil fuels problems which car-culture is responsible for. Road kill is mostly eliminated, especially in urban areas. Safety will dramatically be better, especially when speeds are limited. Mag lev in forward thinking countries is popular of course, and elevated trams are sweet. Many out there can’t think outside the tin box Dream Dystopia we bought into. Expense? Wow 😯 we can take a bike or scooter, even a velomobile in for groceries or shopping. Service provided as a social necessity is possible, and could eliminate the pay at the pump gouging that will spike dramatically as post Peak Oil scarcity kicks in. Vehicle repairs can bankrupt people, especially the working poor. Then what? Debt makes more Corporate Slave rat race runners. No more toxic black burnt plastic rubber pouring onto the oceans, which with plastic pollution and acid rain are dying. What else? I could have a friendly chat with someone, instead of fighting traffic, hearing road rage 😤, and contributing to the offensive noise, plus seeing the vehicle pollution from a seat in a car. Fossil Fuel stacked up the trams, and took over the streets, displacing the poor or marginalized neighbourhoods, plunging the countries into debt. Time to stop being killers, and respect life on earth.

    Public Transport is not as efficient as well. Take the electric busses or trams. That electricity needs to come from somewhere, which at this moment is mostly from burning coal.

      There is potential of electricity to be created from renewables. Combustion engine can be powered only by fossil fueles.
      Public transport is much more efficient, because it carries much more passengers than car. 50 people can go by one bus or drive 50 cars. It is obvious which produces less emissions.

      I'm not trying to be rude, but you're parroting propaganda. "Efficient" doesn't mean what you're using it to me. Yes, even coal powered electricity is more efficient than Gas, generally. But regardless, one bus, even a very 'inefficient' one, is more efficient than cars as long as it has a few passengers. Few people carpool sadly, so 3 or 4 riders on a bus makes it significantly cleaner than those people all driving on their own. A full bus is getting hundreds of "passenger miles per gallon", while a car tops out at around 5x it's rated MPG if you've packed it to the gills(and who really wants to be in that middle seat?)

      Rural farmers aren't the issue, it's the half-breed mess that are suburbs. Which often wipe out farms, actually. Most mcMansion developments are on old farmers land driven out by rising property values, leaving productive fields to be turned into an acre of grass a family barely uses

    Best take on this issue I've seen from a non-american. Over here in the trainless land of sprawl, id love a nice railroad or two to get around without paying for gas, insurance, maintenance, registration, etc, and would love to maintain my sanity lost to traffic every day. But alas, the constant increase in taxes continues to get us absolutely nowhere, as funding for public transport seems like a mirage, continually slipping behind the horizon. Every time I see another anti-car ad, I get depressed, because everyone is so obsessed with crucifying the manifestation of the problem instead of building a solution that will remove the need for the problem to exist.

    Ideally, everyone should have access to one highly versatile car in their household, *but rarely have to use it.* This would be for spontaneous outings (e.g. a picnic) to a national park or some secluded area on BLM land, or for hauling cargo of some sort.

    Agreed. I'm decompiling a theory on this for years now. 1. The thing u described in the begging with the center and periferial areas is happening on a much bigger scale. There is a range in which its its reasonable to drive a car to, lets say, work. That makes the priferial areas limited in range from the center. 2. Public transportation (buses and service cabs) use the roads too. Public transport should get a huge boost financially and technologically in order to compete with cars.

    When I was living in Portland, OR, public transportation was great within the bounds of the city proper and fell off pretty terribly once you left the city limits (transportation to and within larger suburbs/satellite cities like Beaverton and Hillsboro also remained pretty good).

    I was gonna say that whatever you explained in the video is a no-brainer, but it seems that many people (perhaps even the majority) are not willing to limit their driving time, let alone part ways altogether. But again, how can they when the infrastructure is so bad? But, people should still reduce their reliance on cars whenever possible, especially since some people still just drive their cars aimlessly just to "de-stress".

      That is a good thing, putting factories away from towns, who wants that pollution nearby? it is fine to have jobs away from towns, but people who work in the town, should be able to walk to work. It is the commercial activity fleeing towns that kills them, if a factory moves to the outskirts, but the businesses stay in town, that is still fine

    I wished the video focused more on the poor zoning that makes single family and out of town malls so common. People and businesses want to live in the centre, but can’t cos of zoning laws.

      @@aarosundvall I currently live in a nice little flat. I can walk to the train station, multiple different grocery stores and countless restaurants in a couple of minutes. Public transport departs in multiple directions with less than 10 minute intervals each. I sometimes even walk to university, although taking my bicycle or public transport is faster. Why on earth would I want to depend on having a motorbike and spend more time commuting?

    I love driving my car, it is comfortable, no one smells there, it saves me a lot of time and some jobs it was just impossible to go there by public transport or bike. But for my groceries, barber, pharmacy, and all the services you can imagine, I can just walk there in 5-15 minutes, or go by tram, bus or metro. Cars arent bad, but you have to have a choice. Car dependency is bad. Also public transport is way cheaper, so for someone having to drive to their minimum wage job is insane. I love that I can chose, to take a tram or a car, or getting my groceries in 10 minutes, including the walking time. America should change, for their people to have the freedom, it will take time, but at least people are realising that there is a problem

    I recently got into driving, and it's really enjoyable for me to go around the city wherever you can. I see cars becoming a double-edged sword.
    On one hand you have this ability to drive great distances in minutes whereas it would usually take you an hour with public transport (I've been there), but on the other hand it creates pollution, separates places with asphalt, creates bad air and of course it warms up the planet. Electric cars might be the solution, but they only solve the bad air and climate change to a degree.
    I wish I could make the transition, but hearing the sound of the engine has grown on me, and I think that's what's holding most of us back to the EV transition. Donut Media has great videos on EV's, so if you're interested, give them a watch :)

      The solution is to give people options. The Netherlands is often ranked as one of the best countries for drivers, which is surprising to some, but one bicycle on the road means one less car on the road, assuming people drive alone, which is usually the case. When people can safely and conveniently walk and cycle around their communities, and park 7 bicycles in the same space it takes to park one car, that makes life easier for people who absolutely DO need to drive, like folks with reduced mobility, delivery vehicles, etc. Forcing people into car dependency by not providing safe sidewalks, reliable public transport, and a connected, segregated cycling network makes it so you have to drive absolutely everywhere, hence why rush hour quickly turns into hours in car-friendly cities.
      Electric cars don't solve the problem of "the arrogance of space" - a term I really like. Cars are just the least efficient way of moving people around a city. Not saying more car-friendly places shouldn't exist. Some people want a more rural and peaceful lifestyle, but when we're talking about _cities_ I fiercely believe that, although people love to pretend otherwise, we need each other. We're social animals. Forget population _size_ , the places with a high degree of population _density_ where people have frequent opportunities for spontaneous, unplanned interaction, are the places with the greatest degree of community and social trust. Walkable small villages with public squares can achieve this.
      Of course, what I'm saying applies to denser, mixed-use places. US cities are so spread out and housing so separate from businesses that a lot of what I'm arguing for is unfeasible (I'm in the UK where cities are denser and more walkable) but apply what I'm saying in the context of a US downtown. That's where the change first needs to happen.

    This doesn’t address the fact that people want to live out in rural areas already and this provides them with easier access to resources and things. Big cities still have everything within walking distance, and so do lots of suburban areas more or less, but this just makes things less centered in cities.

      Not quite, but yeah the netherlands have been pretty nice everytime I visited.
      When I first visited amsterdam I thought it was sunday or a holiday or something, because there were so few cars on the road.
      But in retrospect its just because everyone bikes, walks or uses public transport much more. So even the people who need to use a car profit from it.
