It's so sad we didn't get any korean live show performances from BP, as they're busy with schedules all of their korean shows were pre-recorded. But the VMA's one is so good! You could literally hear them breath/move with their voice! It was beautiful. I hope we get more live stage performances from them with Shut down as their live vocals are the best!

Kpop groups, even from big companies, used to promote for endless weeks on these korean programs because there was an actual good chance of getting further recognition from the public. Nowadays, however, you will notice sm artists promote for 1 or 2 weeks max, and then either start touring (which by the way, involves a lot more live vocals since the artists are doing what they love instead of having to look pretty on tv) or they promote in other ways (youtube contents). That is partially because the popularity and impact of promoting on the traditional music shows has dropped massively in the past few years. SM artists from 2012-2017 ish used to promote for so long, and the pattern was usually to fully lip-sync the first or first 2 weeks of promo, before letting loose in the latter part of promotions, or to sing live the whole promotion time. Additionally, these idols have to go record their music stages in the middle of the night or in the early hours of morning. Fans who attended Key's Gasoline reherasals and the 2 takes he shot for one of his music shows literally said he was singing live. What happens most likely is that they cut breaths and imperfections out, mix vocals from rehearsals and the 2 takes, and create a polished sound in time for when the performance airs on TV. When Onew promoted DICE and decided to sing live on the spot without having multiple takes, the mc countdown staff literally didn't know what to do! He had trouble having good and efficient material backing his fully live singing because these music programs simply don't encourage the practice. How many times have we seen and heard issues with in-ears, microphones, and sound mixing in fully live performances at these shows? The truth is, music show culture isn't about singing at all! Finally, while I applaud groups/artists who will sing live even just for a few of their TV stages, music shows were never the place where kpop fans who enjoy vocals came to? Bigger groups from big companies have concerts and other chances to show their singing skills. They also have a huge career with millions of live performances while dancing. Who cares if someone like Taeyeon isn't singing live at a music show in 2022? Go watch her concerts, or snsd concerts... the live vocals are endless and much more complex than wtv Forever 1 has going on. Key lip-scynced all his Bad Love stages on regular music shows, then went on Sketchbook and performed the song live with a HAND microphone while doing the full choreography. I think it's time you guys reconsider the value you put in these quick music show stages that rarely make noise among the korean general public. PSA/ This isn't an attack at the concept of the channel's videos per se, but I do think it's ridiculous how much importance newer kpop fans put in these programs. Even when 99% of artists were singing live at them in the peak of 2nd gen era, the fans still mostly watched them for the interactions and the healthy competition aspect. for the ive one, i really couldn't tell until rei's part. in the first performance you can hear a tiny voice trying to sing as she does the move but in the second one there's only one perfect layer of vocals, yujin also seems a lot more relaxed in the second performance, probably bc she wasn't singing live

i remember just getting into kpop back in 2017 and back then shinee was THE STANDARD when it came to live performances. everyone praised them, they're live vocals, absolutely stunning voices, amazing stage presence and just... the ability to entertain. im actually getting annoyed that sm doesnt let them (apart from onew i guess) sing live. they're not rookies, we all know their abilities. sm need to trust their idols more i think, not only when i comes to live vocals, but also when it comes to ideas for comebacks, writing lyrics and such.

You strike a great balance of praising the humanity of imperfect live vocals while never running down the groups that for whatever reason did not get to show off those skills in their latest stages.

Key lip-scynced all his Bad Love stages on regular music shows, then went on Sketchbook and performed the song live with a HAND microphone while doing the full choreography. I think it's time you guys reconsider the value you put in these quick music show stages that rarely make noise among the korean general public.
PSA/ This isn't an attack at the concept of the channel's videos per se, but I do think it's ridiculous how much importance newer kpop fans put in these programs. Even when 99% of artists were singing live at them in the peak of 2nd gen era, the fans still mostly watched them for the interactions and the healthy competition aspect. Singing was never a skill measured or deeply cared for at these shows. There were, and still are, countless other programs to get content promoting live vocals, why scrutanise and lose your sanity over the shows where it isn't a priority?

for the IVE homework, i think 1 is the live one bc of the diff layers + imperfections (esp in rei's and yujin's parts)

for the ive one, i really couldn't tell until rei's part. in the first performance you can hear a tiny voice trying to sing as she does the move but in the second one there's only one perfect layer of vocals, yujin also seems a lot more relaxed in the second performance, probably bc she wasn't singing live

People should also realize that even if show like you hee-yeol's sketchbook, it's live, and killing voice is intended to record idols sing live, there's post-record editing (such as auto tuning) to the original footage.
I remember this music show staff who said that Golden Child is the group with the best live vocals in his time working at music shows. They really put a lot of effort into singing live.
For IVE the first one is live. I could hear Rae’s mic popping with certain letters and I could hear Yujin somewhat shouting to be heard over the backtrack.

i remember just getting into kpop back in 2017 and back then shinee was THE STANDARD when it came to live performances. everyone praised them, they're live vocals, absolutely stunning voices, amazing stage presence and just... the ability to entertain. im actually getting annoyed that sm doesnt let them (apart from onew i guess) sing live. they're not rookies, we all know their abilities. sm need to trust their idols more i think, not only when i comes to live vocals, but also when it comes to ideas for comebacks, writing lyrics and such.
What I noticed is that groups don't sing live during the first week of their promotion but of course, their are other groups who sing all the throughout and those who don't
All performances, of any song I prefer live. There is a different passion in the faces of the idols performing live. Yes, they look perfect and sound perfect when they lipsync, but they look so passionate and alive when they dont

16:27 Luminous is one of my ult groups for many reasons and their live vocals are one of them. Woobin's ability to hit his high notes live (and the fact that their choreo is made so that he CAN) just always blows me away.

On Pink Venom Inkigayo, I think they rarely do actual live vocals nowadays since when they film their comeback stage, they do lots of different camera takes on different angles.
1st performance! What gave away was Yujin, because she is very much focused when singing live, and does not make weird gestures while singing live. Her eyes scream I AM SINGING LIVE in the 1st one.

Gosh I LOVE this series, thank you for all the work you put in gathering the examples and sharing your commentary. I hope people can come to terms with the fact that pointing out pre-recorded vocals isn't implying that our faves can't sing. We all know they can; some of them have trained their voices for years; it's just that backing tracks and even lip-syncing are tools that may be needed in some circumstances. You strike a great balance of praising the humanity of imperfect live vocals while never running down the groups that for whatever reason did not get to show off those skills in their latest stages.
the hw was so hard 😭 at first, i was positive it couldn’t be 1, and then i thought maybe neither’s live and this is a trick question… but after listening closer, i think 1 is live. there are definitely two layers but one is live and i could hear their acc singing come out every so often.

I'm so glad we got to hear at least one SM group (NCT) sing live a lot lately. NCT Dream during tds2 gave everything and NCT 127 with 2 Baddies live performance made me happy. I'm hoping for more, but I also hope they get some good and long breaks. I really don't expect a lot from these idols since they're so overworked.

definitely agree that the colorful ive stage is the live one. it's super hard to tell bc the backing track is so loud, but there are places you can hear it for sure and if you look at their faces you can definitely tell.

I absolutely cannot tell what is live and prerecord (except a bit only thanks to your examples). Twice is my favorite group and they get massive hate on their vocals. So I just figured they didnt know how to sing live. You dont know the relief you gave my heart from these past 7 years. i'm a 2nd gen fan and i naively thought sm would buck their trend and let their veteran idols sing live this month. i mean come on... it's TAEYEON. it's KEY. we KNOW they can sing live. we have YEARS of proof that they're at their best when they sing live. and yet!!! ugh. it made me so mad. :((
Why is SM so scared of letting their idols sing live? We know that they are more than capable of singing live. Imagine not letting THE SNSD sing live. Let them sing live for at least ONE time ffs. I’m kind of glad that the entire lip-synced section is less, because a performance full of voice cracks is much better than a lip-synced performance full of “perfect vocals”.
As for the homework, I’m half-convinced that both are lip-synced. They both sound nearly the same.

honestly, they've been in the industry for 15 years, what do they have to prove, we know that almost all of them can sing and very well, i'm not justifying lip sync but idk, i don't think the girls or sm care about that anymore
